A simple story made confusing by telling it in bits through many, many flashbacks. Everyone looks very similar which is presumably intentional so as to make it more confusing! The main character doesn't seem to age over 10 years. I suppose that the confusion is designed to make the story more mysterious and intriguing but I did find it annoying. Folk often act irrationally which is always jarring. There is a theme of macho male violence which could have been better as an undercurrent rather than being brought to the fore in heavy-handed cameos. It's watchable but I felt that there was a good story that had been more " messed about with" rather than thoughtfully adapted for the screen.
Overall, it's a B series thriller. The dialogue and the acting were poor though the lead actress did make a good attempt at a technicality difficult project which was probably over-ambitious considering the lack of talent in the supporting acting and script writing.
The story had some merit at the start with some clever misdirection but the mystery became repetitive and the final explanation was mundane and unbelievable.
The comic book villains and their henchmen were laughably pathetic. I found it tiresome to watch. It might have been better as a film or 4 episode series. (Maybe 40 years ago.)

I think that the other reviews here are far too generous and trying to be positive as in "Not too bad"
But it really was bad. One of the worst made dective series I have ever seen. I watched it in disbelief as it meandered on hoping there was some sense in the various " gritty, Noir" sub-plots that were acted out. None of which had any relevance to the gruesome murder that was re-enacted at the start of every episode. The characters who were relevant to the murder hardly appeared until the last episode and the investigators spent most of their time doing other "gritty" stuff instead of investigating. A homeless derelict was allowed to sit in on police interviews. There is a very, very simple, unlikely plot which only emerged at all in the last episode. The dénoumont was totally underwhelming. My reaction was " That's it? I've watched all that rubbish to have it all fizzle out at the end"
