I'd forgotten this show even existed because I got rid of TV and cable years ago. But I finally saw it on my new Netflix subscription and I'm so surprised at how terrific it is. It actually gives me the same feeling as the early Roseanne when the show was really really good. The supporting cast as well as the characters they played were always so well-developed, and in this show they pick right up. I feel genuine affection for the characters and the folks who play them. John Goodman and the Dan character are as likeable and decent as ever. I love it that Laurie Metcalf and Sara Gilbert get so much focus now. The credits are great- they end with Darlene laughing the way Roseanne used to. And I'm just thrilled to have the initial Becky back. The dynamic between the two sisters is fantastic. It also gets a lot more focus than it did in later seasons of Roseanne. Plus the later Becky showed up too in a small part and it was fun to see her. All the other minor characters- Needlebutt (who was so fantastic in the original Roseanne- some of the best episodes were around her), Rosie's friends, Dan's friends, Bev the mother, DJ etc etc - it's like going back in time to all the really good times. It's impressive to see their line up of famous actors in smaller parts: Matthew Broderick; Juliette Lewis (David's new gf, I think that's her name); Katy Sagal, the mom in Married with Children- these are just a few of the well-known actors who show up here. The new generation of kids are well-cast and well characterized too. The writing is phenomenal- I think the show still has all the humor and all the heart of the original. Love being back in the familiar setting of the house and a couple of other sites. I just started watching and am glad to see there are quite a few seasons- I hope it keeps up with my high expectations. I can't watch anything anymore with Roseanne the actor- and I'm not missing her one tiny bit. She was great in her time but she's taken a turn I don't care for. The writers must be really gifted.
**Vincent* is an engaging, smart, and overall great show- it's really well-paced, well-acted, well-written. Ray Winston is great in the main role and the supporting characters are interesting and well-developed. Their relationships are also nuanced and rich except that the hints of romance now and then are not quite convincing. Each episode takes up a unique situation with occasional twists. It truly is Brit crime tv at its best. I wish someone would revive the show with the same high quality writing and the same team- it will probably have to be a different cast though- 8 episodes is not nearly enough.
