It is always hard to make a sequel - especially to a movie like Gladiator. How can you even surpass that? Well, Ridley Scott did an amazing job to create a wonderful, mega-cinema experience with Gladiator 2. Spectacular cinematography and visuals. Performances are ok to average.
However, the story lacks innovation and therefore is flat. You can draw a parallel with between this and the first one, almost step-by-step identical. There aren't any powerful scenes where, e.g. Lucius reveals his identity or makes a speech and you would have goosebumps....either of such scenes in the movie didn't have any impact on me. Unfortunately, while Paul Mescal may give an ok performance, I don't think he has the presence that can own the set and carry a movie of this magnitude.
If you loved Gladiator, you will most likely be disappointed. Gladiator 2 doesn't have the depth, but you can still have you an ok cinema experience.

The story opens with the dramatic scene of a young boy, Danny (Tom Holland) shooting at someone and then firing into the crowd. Nobody gets killed, 4 people get injured. Great opening, it gets you hooked immediately. What's next?
The show has 10 episodes and right after the shooting, and in the first 2 episodes, you are left a bit hanging, because it feels like the story gets a bit flat. It makes you wonder 'what the heck is this about?' However, you have enough to be engaged and keep watching. In the 3rd and 4th episode you'll begin to realise that things are not quite as they seem and by the 5th (half way through) you'll find out the core concept the thriller is working with, and around which the whole story revolves. Yet - you're still missing the actual WHAT, WHY, and HOW. The second half of the story (ep 6-10) explore this in depth, but not necessarily in order! You go back and forth in time and you'll find out what role the other characters really play in Danny's life. The crowded room is a metaphor for the psyche and to gain insight into Danny's mind and psyche in a brilliantly made TV show. Frankly, I have never heard of Tom Holland before, but I will for sure remember his name! Wow - what a performance.
Essentially it's a story of a young boy's experience of severe trauma, his journey through recovery and healing - told through a murder-attempt investigation. Highly recommended.
