Was very curious what kind of script Min Namkoong would select after "My Dearest"--and here it is-- a drama about how movies are made from an inside the industry perspective. "Our Movie" is far more than a melodramatic love story. There's a great deal here about the creative process, who "owns" it, who brings ideas to life, and the innately problematic nature of human beings and different notions of what love is. And what it means to LIVE. Various relationship issues are in abundance--family, friends, co-workers, directors, actors, production crews-and that of the audience with the drama itself. It's definitely a slow burner so by the time Director Lee is off and running you're either totally hooked or gone off to follow your own dreams.

Note that embedded into the visual aspect are a variety of "film" imagery--from old camcorder to the latest "man" shoulder held camera for mobile indoor small spaces. There's lovely black & white for memories, grainy footage from a inexpensive tiny video cam, and many carefully shot almost still screen scenes. All complimented by a subtle musical score.

If you're looking for a bombshell thrill ride keep looking. But if you're up for some human drama based in reality then settle in for story set in the context of the people who really do all the hard work to bring life stories to LIFE via film.

Am eight episodes in and sticking around for everything else coming.

Here is a script which opens with an unexpected scenario which elicits the "usual" sorts of expectations going forward. Now let's go to the end--after the credits roll--the very end of film and then think back over everything that's transpired. All expectations are turned inside out and upside down. Just as you start thinking you know where it's going there's just enough of spin to set you off balance with a surprise. It's not a perfect film --but it is one that makes you think a lot about human nature. And by the end there's a LOT to think about regarding human motives, intentions--and love. An unexpected pleasure for those who appreciate the unexpected instead of formula scripts. Oakes Fegley--yeah, he carries the film very well.

Damn, does anyone do fight action better than Korean dramatists? Maybe but I sure don't know yet. I'm impressed with the creative action all around. The relationship dynamics between uncle and niece are unique and in many ways very positive preparations for dealing with living in a crazy world where trust must be earned. There's more to survival than relying on basic instincts--making the most of what's available and focusing are right on target IMO. Interesting take on chosen / created families too. For all the violence issues of collateral damage/murder of noncombatants/civilians are raised. And the difference between psychopaths and rational humans who've made certain career choices--yeah, there IS a difference. Another thing to think about is all that firepower--all those weapons, drones and bombs--indeed there's a lot of it in our world right now. Scary. Still a very enjoyable guilty pleasure watching for what interesting action, character twist, idea concept is coming next. Oh that damn couch... love it.
