This is not a bad movie, not by any means, it's touching, well made, and beautifully filmed. But after a while, the amount of takes that seem unnecessarily long - showing a face or the back of a head for a duration that seems like a small eternity - made me question the artistic merits of that approach. The longer it went on, it seemed more like the padding, stretching of a movie which has a rather simple story (I don't mean that in a negative way, simple stories can be among the best) in order to get to feature length. I couldn't help myself but think that it would have made a better short film than what it is now.
This is really one of the better Netflix series of the last few years, well written, entertaining, with a good to brilliant cast and an interesting choice of music. And, just as a side note, after having seen Jeff Goldblum as Zeus in this series, I think that he would be the perfect Sheogorath, would a movie or series based on the Elder Scrolls video game series ever been made... - So, why did Netflix cancel this series after just one season? Apparently, it just had to few viewers or not the "viewing patterns" or whatever Netflix expects for a series that is, in its view, successful and makes them enough money. But I think that, given the overall positive critical reception and the existence of a solid fan base - as expressed by many reviews here as well - there should be a place, a niche somewhere for a continuation of this series, maybe not on Netflix...?
In the last twenty years or so, since I have seen the film first on television, I have only become ever fonder of this timeless masterwork which I now have on a DVD bought in Iceland. It manages to be hilarious and deeply moving at the same time. The cinematography is outstanding, the music fitting and beautiful. I don't really understand why it's not better known internationally, and why the average user rating here is so mediocre. Well, it's not an action-filled blockbuster for sure. What it is: a superbly well-paced road movie with low key glimpses of the supernatural, touching questions of familial bonds - and all this as a kind of comedy.
