His is a messy film that I really wanted to like. It has interesting and clever elements, especially given its Stephen King origins, and the core concept is compelling. However, despite some vivid character portrayals, it becomes difficult to understand the characters. Their interactions don't feel natural, and the levels of anger, compassion, and fear seem inconsistent.
The rationale for why they are doing what they're doing is often unclear. The film relies heavily on the gritty idea of having to walk endlessly or die, but it doesn't provide enough setup to make that premise fully believable. The characters sometimes feel modern and other times tied to the story's era, which adds to the disconnect.
While the film spends considerable time developing its characters, there are few you truly connect with. Nearly everyone is flawed and difficult, and the duration and mechanics of the walk feel unrealistic. Still, it remains mildly entertaining-just not particularly convincing.

This is a film that truly rewards being seen in a theater-and in 3D, IMAX, or ideally both. The visual presentation is stunning and immersive, delivering a scale and level of detail that simply can't be replicated at home. Much of the entertainment value comes directly from the visuals, which are stunning. YES, the 3:30 run time is absurdly LONG. We needed breaks. It could have been better at 30-45 minutes shorter. While the story is complex and runs a bit long, and the characters and broader plot echo elements from previous installments, the craftsmanship on display is undeniable. This is a carefully made, confident film that knows exactly what it is and delivers on that promise. The sound design is equally impressive, enhancing the experience and pulling you deeper into the world with precision and power. OSCAR nominations for visuals and sound are likely. Camerion is at a different level than everyone else. Sound and action sequences are superb. I totally respect James Cameron and his art of filmmaking. That said, these directors who own 100% of the decision-making, make the movies way way too long. Cameron could have cut 30-45 minutes of this film easily. Not that it is boring, it's just too long. Movies for adults are 2 hours, for kids they are 80-90 minutes. THIS is supposed to be a family-friendly film. Almost 4 hours in a theater seat is bad. Streaming, everyone will walk around and not watch in one sitting, which is key. Scorsese made the Irishmen wan too long and Killers of the Flower Moon feel like eternity. Producers should reign these guys in. 3.5-4 hour movies are not better. Cut them into 2 films if you have the right material (see Mission Impossible or Wicked fro example.) Make the best film you can in 120 minutes. This film is almost 200 minutes. Ouch.
Marty Supreme packs a lot of punch, and Timothée Chalamet continues to shine as a versatile actor capable of playing complex roles. His high-spirited-and occasionally dicey-character gets into trouble as he sets out to prove he can become the world's best table tennis player.
How do you take a dated, historic story about ping pong and make it highly entertaining and engaging? Great acting-and an even better soundtrack. The director and producers have selected some of the most unique and perfectly chosen songs, largely from the 1980s, that fit the scenes seamlessly and add an energy that keeps the film moving at a high clip, especially through the first two-thirds.
The acting ensemble is excellent. The story is interesting and complex, and being based on a true story makes it even more compelling. Marty is neither a hero nor an anti-hero, but he feels like a real person-and that's what makes this film great. Flawed, driven, and real.
