The excellent "Gladiator " is lossely based in classic epic films , "Ben Hur ". "Spartacus ", and - among all- "The fall of the Roman empire " directed by Anthony Mann in 1964 . The story is similar with the same historic facts (Cómodo, Lucila , Marco Aurelio ) . I have written a book about Anthony Mann in 1998 , and I am impressed for the greatness of "El Cid " and "The fall of the roman empire " . Mann´s film ( produced by Samuel Bronston ) is even more spectacular than "Gladiator ", with a superb music by Dimitri Tiomkin and full of beauty images .
