Bravo New World: Seidl Returns with Desolate Portrait of Fallen Hustler

There’s always a healthy thread of humor lurking under the despair of Ulrich Seidl’s films, both documentary and otherwise, and this is most certainly the case in his long awaited return to narrative filmmaking with Rimini, a cross-cultural portrait of a hustler hit with a karma bullet. It’s been nearly a decade since Seidl unleashed his perversely enjoyable Paradise trilogy, though his documentary features have continued to unspool, as with the surprisingly sweet In the Basement (2014) and the disturbing Safari (2016). The groundwork of his latest feature is basically the story of a failed playboy gone to seed reuniting with his daughter, though undercurrents of cultural trauma bubble up sporadically.…...

Top 150 Most Anticipated Foreign Films of 2020: #11. Wicked Games – Ulrich Seidl
Böse Spiele

A project which has been developing for the past several years, it would appear 2020 is finally the year in which Ulrich Seidl’s Wicked Games will at last be unveiled, the Austrian auteur’s first narrative feature since his final installment in his underrated Paradise trilogy debuted back in 2013.

Seidl bounces back and forth between narrative and documentary, and over the past several years has released 2014’s In the Basement (review) and 2016’s Safari.…...

Ulrich Seidl readies trophy hunter doc
Ulrich Seidl at an event for Paraíso: Amor (2012)
Austrian filmmaker’s new documentary to be ready in time for Cannes.

Details have emerged during International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (Idfa) of the Ulrich Seidl’s latest project, a new feature doc titled Auf Safari about trophy hunting in Africa

The film has already been shot and is expected to be completed in time for Cannes next May.

Sigrid Jonsson Dyekjær of Danish Documentary Production has boarded the project as co-producer.

“He (Seidl) is following trophy hunters in Africa. But Ulrich Seidl is always Ulrich Seidl so he is doing it a bit more profoundly,” said Dyekjær.

Seidl has been shooting the project for many years but is now ready to finalise it and is completing the sound in Denmark with Mainstream, the company regularly used by Lars Von Trier.

There has been intense interest in (and condemnation of) big game hunters since a Minnesota dentist shot dead a much loved lion on a safari trip in...

Suburban Seidl: Strand Adds “In the Basement” to the Collection
Having previously released all three items his Paradise: Trilogy, Screen Daily reports that Strand Releasing have excavated Ulrich Seidl’s out of comp Venice Film Festival premiered docu. The long in the works oddity In the Basement is be pegged for a summer release.

Gist: The film is about people and their obsessions. The film is about basements and what people do in them in their free time. The film is about brass-band music and opera arias, expensive furniture and cheap men’s jokes, sexuality and sadism, fitness and fascism, whips and dolls, snakes and guns, love and the longing for love.

Worth Noting: Seidl is looking to return to fiction with Herr Grasl. We’re hopeful for a 2016 release.

Do We Care?: Reviewed at London BFI, we called this item “distinctive in its revelations about its subjects and steering clear of the notorious imprisonment cases that shocked Austrians and the world alike,...

Through the Looking-Glass…Top 100 Most Anticipated Films of 2016: #4. Ulrich Seidl’s Herr Grasl
Herr Grasl

Director: Ulrich Seidl // Writer: Ulrich Seidl

After premiering his monolithic Paradise trilogy across 2012 and 2013, along with the long gestating documentary project In the Basement in 2014, Austrian auteur Ulrich Seidl has been a bit more chatty about plans for his next project, titled Herr Grasl. A labor of love for the director, he’s funding it himself and seeking additional funding from his home country, and it’s rumored to be his most expensive project to date. A period piece set in the late 18th century, the film concerns a real-life Robin Hood-like figure who lived in the northern part of Austria fought back against the authorities and was eventually hanged at the age of 26. Seidl is quoted as saying “We had to deal with monarchy, meaning a very repressive state: a state as criminal as criminals themselves. A bit like today.” Sounds exactly like the cheery tone we...

Notebook's 7th Writers Poll: Fantasy Double Features of 2014
How would you program this year's newest, most interesting films into double features with movies of the past you saw in 2014?

Looking back over the year at what films moved and impressed us, it is clear that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, the annual tradition of our end of year poll, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2014—in theatres or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2014 to create a unique double feature.

All the contributors were given the option to write some text explaining their 2014 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative film programming we'd be lucky to catch...

Cellar Cinéthnography: Ulrich Seidl at Work Surveying the Basements of Austria
Director Ulrich Seidl (left) in the documentary Ulrich Seidl – A Director at Work

Ascent is a passage towards holiness, and descent, towards darkness and fear. Although phenomenological experience takes place on the horizontal plane, the spiritual experience, wishing to mimic heavenly life, is ordered on the vertical one. Even when this spirituality is secularized into psychology, this vertical arrangement of space remains unchanged—the enlightened self sits aflame atop the mountain, and down below in the bowels of obscurity the impenetrable subconscious hangs heavy like a black mist.

This dense opacity is a great temptation to cinema which has always yearned to seize the unfilmable (be it violence, love, god, terror). And what better place to hunt for this unfilmable than in the gloom of cellars, both symbol and representation of repressed desire? The true darkness which exists only in the most horrific of basements, where actual enslavement, rape, murder are carried out repel representation.

Im Keller (In The Basement): Ulrich Seidl Discovers Oddities Underground In Trailer For His Latest
Austria's Ulrich Seidl is finding the odd in the everyday with his latest documentary, Im Keller (In The Basement) in which he explores the basements of Austria to very strange effect. The film sketches Austrians' relationships with their basements, and also looks for answers to the questions of what makes them different and whether such special characteristics exist at all. This film tour through the everyday lives of Austrian cellars managed to find answers and even ask some new questions, thereby shining a little light on facts normally hidden beneath the ground.Unfortunately there does not appear to be an English subtitled version of the trailer available yet but the visuals here - from bondage lairs, to shooting ranges, to mass taxidermy - are so striking that...

Cph:dox smashes attendance record
Cph:dox has broken its own audience record for the 12th consecutive year.

This year’s tally was 83,900 visitors, up 20% from 70,100 last year. Of those, 3,586 were online views.

There were 1,356 delegate industry visitors.

Tine Fischer, festival director at Cph:dox, said: “Cph:dox has both audience- and industry-wise experienced an outstanding year. We are extremely happy, but hands down the most important thing that has happened this year without comparison, is that the festival has really taken the documentary into an active social and political space with its new project Megatrends. The project is not limited to journalistic criticism and analysis, but puts more focus on how we can get an active dialogue going on some of the most important global issues and challenges. The interaction, innovation and strengthening of an active democratic dialogue have been the objectives and we think it has had a flying start. The project is intended as a recurring initiative and we are looking forward...

Ulrich Seidl reveals new film details
Im Keller (2014)
Midway through International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (Idfa), the In the Basement director has talked about his period drama; while George Takei has revealed details on his WWII project and Autlook and picked up new titles.

Speaking at Amsterdam’s Eye centre, controversial Austrian director Ulrich Seidl, whose latest doc In The Basement (sold by Coproduction Office) is screening at the festival, revealed further details of his forthcoming costume film.

The film, a historical drama set in the late 18th century, has a working title of Herr Grasl. It is set in “the milieu of the poorest of the poor”.

These are young people, returning from war and having to engage in criminal activities to survive. Its main character is Herr. Grasl, a real-life Robin Hood-like figure who lived in the northern part of Austria fought back against the authorities and was eventually hanged at the age of 26. The film promises to be Seidl’s most ambitious yet.[p...

Rubber: La llanta asesina (2010)
Venice Reviews: Golden Lion winner 'Pigeon,' 'In the Basement,' 'Reality'
Rubber: La llanta asesina (2010)
Venice — As the festival wraps up for another year and prizes are announced, time for my final Venice 2014 report. On a personal note, I'd like to say I've had a blast writing for HitFix for the first time, and huge thanks to everyone who said that they enjoyed the coverage; it always means a lot. "A Pigeon Sat On A Branch Contemplating Existence" Grade: A+ Reaction: Given its Golden Lion-winning status, you'd be forgiven, sight unseen, for assuming that "A Pigeon Sat On A Branch Contemplating Existence" was one of those films that sends festival critics into paroxysms of delight while largely eluding a broader audience. You know, the sort of films where a pigeon actually does sit on a branch contemplating existence for a lively three-hour stint and then a jury says how refreshing it was to be freed from the shackles of conventional characterization, narrative or incident and gives it a prize.
