A note of caution to anyone who sees the DVD or Blu-ray front cover art and title of this movie, and subsequently thinks they will be getting an action-packed exercise; this is NOT an action movie! The movie instead is, of all things, a wacky comedy. I sort of was prepared for that thanks to the somewhat absurd-sounding plot description on the back of the Blu-ray case, but while I had some preparation, I was all the same disappointed by what I watched. To be fair, the movie gives Antonio Banderas the rare chance to act silly, and his enthusiastic performance is at time infectious. Also, I admit there were a few times when I giggled or even laughed out loud. But the movie as a whole does not work. The main problem is that apart from Banderas, the energy level is often extremely low, and as a result it's hard for any comic sparks to be ignited. Though I feel I should point out that much of the humor is somewhat lazy, familiar, and predictable in nature. The wacky premise should have inspired more and stronger attempts at humor than we actually got. And the plot more often than not moves at a very slow and sluggish pace; you'll soon be telling the movie to simply get on with it. It doesn't help that despite filming on location in Chile, the low budget of the entire enterprise is extremely evident. Despite a few good things to be found, this is one movie you're probably best shying away from.

Normally even when I don't like the way a movie is headed I will watch it all just in case there is something redeeming. I can't say I could this time. I am a fan of nearly all of the films done from Antonio Banderas but even if it was supposed to be comedy I did not find it funny.
Insulting? Yes both culturally and institutionally. I hate to see misinformation passed and it abounds in the movie.
I blame the writer mostly and then the director and actors that participated but I guess they were happy with getting paid regardless.
Hard pass for me.

They made the trailer look somewhat interesting and it got me curious so I took a chance not expecting much. Well, it was way worse than I thought. This is by far Antonio Banderas worst movie ever. The directing and location sets were the only salvageable parts of this disaster, everything else especially the acting and writing were garbage high-school drama class quality. Seems to me whoever produced this garbage needed a tax write- off, and they got it. It's a generous 2/10 from me

This film tells the story of a rock legend, who goes on a holiday to Chile with his wife. His wife gets kidnapped, and he has to pay one million dollars ransom. However, the US government stops him from paying the ransom, so he has to use other ways to try to save his wife.
"Gun Shy" is really so ridiculously bad! It knows that it is bad, and there is no attempt to hide how silly, contrived, clichéd or cheesy the story is. The story is so unrealistic that it becomes funny. For example, is the kidnapped victim really going to have a romantic talk on the beach with the kidnapper? The whole film is just so bad that it becomes funny, but hasn't made the elite group of films that is so bad that it becomes good yet.

Reading the summary and seeing the reviews, I didn't think this movie would be great. I checked it out simply because Antonio Banderas has done some really great work in the past. I understand that his movies aren't all outstanding but I figured he could carry it if he had to...
I was mistaken. This movie was just plain bad. From the plot being laughably thin, the acting completely lacking, the ridiculous stereotypes and last (but certainly not least) the awful singing from Banderas, this movie was just one long cringe.
I am not usually this harsh on most of my reviews but this one definitely deserves the rating I gave it.

Gun Shy (2017) is an action comedy movie directed by Simon West and it was a steaming pile of garbage.
Positives for Gun Shy (2017): Antonio Banderas does a great job as the main character and he is the only reason to watch this movie. That's all I've got to say for the positives.
Negatives for Gun Shy (2017): This movie felt like a generic action movie with some comedy sprinkled throughout the runtime except it sucks major ass. Aside from Banderas, I didn't care about any of the other characters. The comedy was awful, lame and predictable. There is barely any action in the movie. And finally, the movie is really boring with horrible pacing.
Overall, Gun Shy (2017) is the Simon West movie that got on my nerves the most and I hated it.

Even Banderas couldn't save this attempt at making a movie. Best you wait for it to air on TV or better still, give it a complete pass. There's not a single likable or hateable enough character...it's all so very awful at being very awful, it's like it was made by a group of drug addicts trying hard very hard to afford their next supply. I don't wanna bore anyone by trying to try explain what this motion picture is, in case I get blamed for ruining people's breakfast...lol

Ok so I quite like B movies and movies done on tight budgets. But boy this is really bad. The script is poor, acting worse still, set pieces... grim. It plays out just like a very cheap cable TV movie or high school play. Definitely the worst movie I have seen in a very long time. I hadnt realised just how bad Antonio is at acting. Seems like many his skills came from the skills of the editor in his previous films if this is anything to go by.

I don't understand some of the negative reviews about this movie, and it's low rating is unfair. Antonio's choices of movie projects can be a bit hit and miss, but Gun Shy was a pretty funny movie. Don't expect it to be the best comedy, or anything great in cinema, that is not what this movie is about. It's an easy going hour and half of inoffensive fun. Gun Shy and it's cast and crew are not going to win any Oscars for this, but everything was done well enough to give the viewer a pleasant experience. It's not a deep thinker, and as such does not need to be over critiqued.

Beware low ratings and subjective reviews of movies, including this one. I gave this 9 stars based on how well the movie delivered on what it promised. It did fantastically.
It was a little bit wacky, but not even close to being over-the-top. All the jokes were original, imaginative, and genuinely funny. The humour didn't rely on being crude or scraping the bottom of the gutter. No foul language or innuendo, except for 5 minutes from one character who suited that brand of humour - yet even that was very tame.
The narrative was consistent and engaging with no plot holes. It didn't test my suspension of disbelief. Except for one fake-out, there were no clichés. Even the fake-out was accompanied by a tasteful and funny joke.
Would watch again. Would show to friends.

How can an actor go from playing parts like Desperado, Zorro to this stupid nonsense movie!?
The "Aussie" is portrayed as crude, rude! AN insult to Australians! We must look real bad to the rest of the cinema world for some reason!
The poster itself is misleading! Gun Shy? Who? Antonio held nothing but beer cans throughout the movie! Action Comedy? I expected a lot more. I have seen action comedy movies before which were really entertaining, not this one! I will be generous and give it a 3.

Started ok, but cliched. Banderas is a nice guy and good actor but could not save this derailed train. Every minute watching this I could feel Father Time wagging his finger at me for wasting my life. This sort of film either needs to be 'real world' and derive humour from the excesses and non-conformist nature of its protagonist; or absurdist and fantastic. Gun Shy tries to be both, and so fails. The characters are not believable, and at the same time not absurdly funny. Jokes that aren't funny are repeated over and over. Dialogue is unengaging and scenarios are just silly, but not humorous. Just a bad, bad movie.

Has Antonio Banderas lost his mind? Or is he going through a mid life crisis?
The movie is so stupid it's not even funny. What a waste of time.
If they had added Benny Hill music I might have laughed.
It's pathetic and because it is hopeless Netflix of course has added it to their ever increasing trash can of a library. Avoid it.

Antonio Banderas, Olga Kurylenko and Mark Valley play in this movie based on a book. It is supposed to be a comedy with some social commentary, only it is not funny and most of the time it is offensive to every group it depicts. Antonio Banderas does well, but the role is so much beneath him that I wonder how this movie was even made. And who writes books that are this bad?!
Bottom line: I skipped large portions of it and it was still boring. The jokes were lame, the acting stupid, the story horrendous. This film has nothing redeeming about it, except maybe Olga's cuteness, even it not being enough to save this piece of crap.

I hadn't even heard of this movie prior to coming to find it by sheer random luck. Well, that might be because I hardly keep up with the movies that Antonio Bandera makes. That being said, don't get me wrong, he does make the occasional good movie every now and again. So I decided to sit down and watch "Gun Shy".
And I am glad that I did, because this actually turned out to be a rather entertaining movie.
I will actually go as far as saying that this is one of the best movies that Antonio Bandera has made in a long time. It was really nice to see him in a movie such as this, because he seemed to fit into the character like a hand in a glove.
"Gun Shy" was driven by a good story and was filled with interesting characters. And they had a fairly good cast together here for bringing the various characters to life on the screen.
The movie definitely had an adequate amount of comedy and action, which made for a good cocktail.
"Gun Shy" is well-worth the time and effort. So if you haven't already seen it, do so if you get the chance.

Now, what's wrong with this movie? Is it the over acting?
Is it the non stop flat jokes?
One positive is the location. Some of the shots are beautiful.
However the screen play...

Antonio Banderas plays a washed-up, alcoholic, ex-famous heavy metal band bass player. His wife drags him to a July vacation in Chile (where it is winter in July, one of the running jokes.) She is kidnapped by insurgents while on a wildlife viewing tour. The rest of the movie is about Turk (Banderas) bumbling around the city while trying to ransom his wife back. But he is dogged by an overzealous American FBI agent, who hates his current assignment and has dreams of a big promotion, as well as delusions of grandeur.
Banderas basically is this whole film, though the actor playing the FBI agent is hilarious as well. I suspect that Banderas took the role as it is the opposite of his usual swashbuckling, handsome, heroic (or villainpus ) roles. The plot is very basic, but it's the acting and the little jokes that make me keep watching this again.
I won't relay the name of Turk's band's classic hit, because it's possibly NSFW. But watch the first few minutes of the film and you'll catch it. Anyone who is a fan of '80s hard rock or metal will laugh instantly. And I dare anyone to watch the "tortoise" dialog between Turk and the FBI, and not laugh (25:30 in, if you want to skip to it.) Lots of other funny and touching moments. It feels like the producers, director and actors had a lot of inside jokes going on between them all.
"Gun Shy" never takes itself seriously. That's getting rarer in cinema, and I love it.

"Gun Shy" has moments of absolute brilliance and others that are excruciatingly bad. I laughed frequently. I also felt it dragged at times and many of the jokes and gags fell flat. But it packs enough comedy that it's enjoyable despite the parts that felt they could have been much better. Much of it does feel as if the filmmakers threw material at the wall to see if it stuck.
The tone and style of humor are uneven. It tries to be raunchy at times, but also tries not to be too raunchy. An exchange between a diplomat and his local assistant is deftly executed. A fight scene involving a Taser is a riot. Some of the material regarding the sybaritic self-indulgent lifestyles of Rock & Roll stars is familiar and seems like it needed to be cranked up a few levels, but at other times Turk Enry's reflections seem almost cerebral. There are a few halfhearted efforts at political humor in the first act which largely fall flat. The tackiest gag involves a cheap swipe at President Trump.
Antonio Banderas's role seems incomplete. It should be what some writers call the idiot savant or the fool triumphant. The character is burned out, inept and insecure. He has heart and hasn't entirely lost his talent. But he doesn't really have a strong positive side. It's like Inspector Jacques Clouseau or Johnny English without the powers of deduction, the fearless dedication or indomitable spirit, all idiot without the savant. Banderas does an outstanding job with what he's given, but the character seems less than fully developed.
The film is hilarious at times, but frustrating in that it is not consistently amusing.

Go to Spar.
Buy 2 litres of cheap cider.
Neck it at the bus stop.
You'll have more fun.
Best part of the film is literally in the last 10 seconds of the credits.
I'll still be writing to David Mitchell and admonishing him for even being in this.
