Film finance and production company Productivity Media Inc. has suspended its CEO amid a probe over allegations of financial mismanagement, the company tells The Hollywood Reporter. It recently informed investors that its executive team had brought in auditor PricewaterhouseCoopers to check its books and review loans.
“We can confirm that there is an ongoing confidential investigation and that William Santor is currently on a temporary leave of absence,” a representative said.
Multiple sources tell THR that at least some producers on Pmi productions — independent films with budgets typically under $10 million — have not been paid their full fees and believe distribution efforts may be imperiled by the issues now under review. “It is the company’s policy not to comment on these types of alleged contractual matters in a public forum,” the Pmi representative said.

Dominican producer Cristian Mojica and filmmaker Yoel Morales will pull double duty at this year’s Locarno, where their SXSW Audience Award-winning film “Bionico’s Bachata” will screen in the Open Doors section and their next project, “The Baker,” will participate in the Match Me! forum.
Mojica and Morales produce through their label Mentes Fritas Film Production, which is currently in development on the project and has plans to shoot in late 2025.
The 1925-set film turns on Marco, who immigrates from the Dominican Republic to inherit his uncle’s bakery in Italy, unaware that he will face intense internal conflicts and rivalries with neighboring businesses of a century-long war. His ascension gets complicated with violent crimes and unexpected alliances as he strives to revive the bakery’s legacy.

The Baker. Mendel. Rabbi. Three iconic roles created by beloved stage veteran Chip Zien. The last of those three comes from “Harmony,” the new musical from Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman, which played its final performance on February 4. But closing notices be damned; Zien is giving the performance of his life in this juicy role. The actor somehow missed out on Tony nominations for those other classic characters, but after a Broadway career that has spanned five decades, voters simply mustn’t pass up the chance to give this actor his very first Tony nomination.
Zien first came to prominence for originating the role of The Baker in Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s “Into the Woods” in 1987. Though that classic musical received 10 Tony nominations (including a lead actress victory for his co-star Joanna Gleason as the Baker’s Wife), Zien was not one of them. This was the start...

As the aftereffects of the writers’ and actors’ strikes hit streaming in a big way, there’s not a lot of new content to offer subscribers early in 2024. Hulu still has some interesting things to offer in January, though.
The biggest new Hulu Original series in the new year is Death and Other Details, a locked room murder mystery starring Mandy Patinkin as Rufus Cotesworth, who is said to be the world’s greatest detective – at least in this universe. In the new series, Cotesworth comes to the rescue when an unfortunate soul is killed on lavish Mediterranean ocean liner, and he has to team up with the prime suspect (Violett Beane) to solve the crime.
The big Original movie premiere in January is Self Reliance, which follows a middle-aged dude (Jake Johnson) who gets randomly invited into a limo by Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg, and is soon offered...

The first Ron Perlman performance I saw was in HellBoy, and since that day, he has fascinated me as an actor. Sam Shepherd, actor-playwright, once said about Harry Dean Stanton, the great character actor, that he is one of those actors who knows his ‘face is a story.’ I would extend that compliment to Ron Perlman, whose entire body is a story in a sense. The long face, the heavy set, those intense beady eyes—his entire body lends itself to a mysterious subtext that the filmmaker might not even have hoped to communicate. Perlman has generally been seen as a force to be reckoned with, and indeed he is, but in The Baker, he gets to apply his craft to tell a touching story about a grandfather and granddaughter, bringing out a tender side of him. He doesn’t need to do much, as he does everything with just...

Apple TV+, which launched two months ago, has its first truly inspiring series in Little America, a lovely and emotive series about the lives of immigrants in America.
Little America, debuting Jan. 17 with all eight episodes, is a scripted anthology in which each standalone episode is based on a true story that was originally featured in Epic Magazine. Each episode (which mercifully are half-hours) not only has a new story and a new cast, but is also helmed by different writers and directors. It’s a clever choice: The immigrant experience isn’t universal, and the series reflects that truth...
