Alessandro Preziosi, Stana Katic, Alessandra Mastronardi, and Brett Dalton in Lost in Florence (2017)
When Eric Lombard proposes to his girlfriend Colleen during a romantic trip to Florence, he is shocked when she turns him down and heads back home. Heartbroken, he stays behind with his cousin Anna and her Italian husband who introduces him to calcio storico, an ancient form of football played every summer in Florence that combines rugby and street fighting. As a former college football star, Eric is a natural at the sport, and while many of the local Italians have their reservations about an American playing their beloved game, he proves himself again and again on the field and ultimately wins their approval.

    A fresh movie to see

The movie talks about a historical and traditional game created in Florence, the high point of movie certainlly is a beauty Florence, the narrative is about a light and weak history of love. I need talk about Stana who has a good participation with support actress. I recomend to see. Enjoy it.

    Don't waste your time!

Boring, predictable rubbish, poor acting and dull dialogue.

This film has nothing to redeem itself at all.

There isn't even enough shots of the beauty of Florence to perk up the lack lustre dullness.

The storyline is like a Saturday morning kids show on a downbeat television channel, supposedly spiced up with an obligatory sex scene or two.

It it were possible to give a minus score, this would stand out as having as many as I were permitted to add!

What else could a person do to fill those ninety eight minutes one will never get back? Wash your hair, pop to the shops? Read a free newspaper even - anything but sit through this absolute dross.

It's hard to impress me, but this film did

This film has appeared to be a great surprise to me. It is nothing like a stereotypical romantic melodrama, this is a True Film in the most powerful meaning of the word. It restores a will to live. It is pure, sincere and real, and at the same time symbolic and magical, reminds me the Italian New Wave cinema. It is great from the beginning to the end. The acting and cinematography are brilliant. Brett Dalton gives an outstanding performance as always. I didn't know the rest of the actors well enough before, but now I feel a huge respect to everyone of them. Every character is so much alive, every scene is so well filmed. I haven't watched that good movie for a long time. It's hard to impress me, but this film did.

This would have worked better as a sports movie

I have seen a lot of romance movies, and I don't think this was one of them. I never found myself rooting for the couple. I was never against the couple, but it was never a draw for this film. The romance feels bland and forgettable. At its core, the film is not a romance because it is never about Eric and Stefania as a couple but rather a story about Eric finding his way.

The unique aspect of this story is the sport element, and I think the film would have been more interesting if it focused more on that. I could barely tell one player on the team from the other, but if there was a greater focus, the emotional stakes for the game would have had more impact. As is, nothing about the film really stands out.

Who needs any reason for falling in love with Florence?

Florence is one of my favourite cities of the world, and I am an old guy who has travelled a lot. It's 52 years since I first visited there, and I have been back over and over, including just three months ago. I had heard of Calcio Storico, but never visited at that time in June, so I knew very little about it, other than that it is pretty rough!

So in my opinion Ercole (Eric) needs very few reasons for falling in love with the city, but the movie gives him two, and these are Calcio Storico and Stefania. In their portrayal, the former trumps the latter (now why did I use that verb?? I will return to this). I found the notion that a gridiron footballer would take to Calcio Storico with such enthusiasm thoroughly plausible, and very well presented. The 'boy meets girl' story was a little bit more thin. OK, he was on the rebound, he was in an enchanting city, and it wasn't hard, especially as she made very little secret of her sexual desire for him.

The ending was his final 'Labour of Hercules' - he had to choose between two women. And in these days of Trump, anyone who decided to vote for him might have great difficulty understanding how and why any man could reject a steady suburban life in America with a woman who was American as apple pie, for the magical slice of Italian chaos that is Florence with a woman who was as passionate as every artist who ever lived in that breathtakingly marvellous city. Ercole displayed his passion - he was full of it, and loved living life for the moment and to the full. Colleen was devoid of it, and for her it was all about financial security first second and third.

It was through her own passion that Stefania won her man. A very nice little movie, 8/10.

    • Trivia
Many films, including this one, have shot on the famous Ponte Vecchio in Florence. But Lost in Florence (2017) is the first film ever to shoot beneath the Ponte Vecchio.
    • Errores
In the scene of them out on the river, double sculling under the Ponte Vecchio, it was clear that the long shot was of guys who knew how to scull, but that in the close ups we could see that the actors didn't have a clue, especially Ercole (Brett Dalton) who really made it look like a Labour of Hercules! They were quite obviously so incompetent that some form of float had been attached to the boat to prevent them from capsizing. This appeared to be of a light coloured wood, and was clearly visible in two shots, one out on the river and another as they returned to the dock. In fact, once back at the dock they both drew their oars in out of the water while still sitting in the boat, something no sculler or rower would ever do, as it would almost certainly flip over (without that poorly concealed float attached). It is always necessary to get out of the boat while the oars are still all the way out on the water.
    • Créditos curiosos
The story, all names, characters and incidents portrayed in this production are fictitious. Except the clueless American tourists, who are still probably wandering around looking for Santa Croce
