James Franco, Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, and Dave Franco in The Disaster Artist. Obra maestra (2017)
James Franco Recreated 25 Minutes of ‘The Room’ Shot-for-Shot in ‘The Disaster Artist’
James Franco, Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, and Dave Franco in The Disaster Artist. Obra maestra (2017)
After adapting such classic novels as William Faulkner’s “The Sound and the Fury” and Cormac McCarthy’s “Child of God,” James Franco appears to have found his calling with a rather different kind of book: Greg Sestero’s “The Disaster Artist,” which details the making of Tommy Wiseau’s “The Room.” The film is commonly regarded as a masterpiece of so-bad-it’s-good cinema, but Franco’s movie has won praise for his affectionate portrayal of the material — an affection that apparently inspired him to recreate nearly half an hour of it in his movie.

That’s according to an interview he and his brother Dave (who co-stars in “The Disaster Artist”) just did with the Independent, which comes with a disclaimer: Much of the footage they shot was left on the cutting-room floor.

Ava DuVernay Wants ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ to Be ‘a Lynn Shelton Movie, Just on a Larger Budget’
Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, Martin Freeman, Michael B. Jordan, Andy Serkis, Chadwick Boseman, Danai Gurira, Lupita Nyong'o, Daniel Kaluuya, and Letitia Wright in Pantera Negra (2018)
Ava DuVernay and Ryan Coogler first met as indie directors at Sundance in 2013, yet their conversation at Vulture Festival at the Hollywood Roosevelt November 19 wasn’t exactly a long-overdue reunion. “Yesterday you were in our suite, looking at fruit wraps?” DuVernay asked.

They are respectively editing “A Wrinkle in Time” and “Black Panther” on the Disney lot (“behind doors two steps away from each other,” according to DuVernay). The expected blockbusters — each budgeted in excess of $100 million — hit theaters three weeks apart in early 2018.

At 31, Coogler is a year younger than DuVernay was when she first picked up a camera. Nevertheless, he is completely in awe of her “machine”-like ways. “[She] makes TV on the side,” gaped Coogler. “I don’t know how she does it. Literally, I’m in...

Star Sightings: Reese Witherspoon Steps Out in Southern Style, Emily Ratajkowski Rocks a Teensy Mini & More!
Emily Ratajkowski
The stars can't stop living it up in style -- and can you blame them?

Reese Witherspoon showed off looks from the spring 2018 collection of her fashion line, Draper James, at Root & Bone in NYC’s East Village on Nov. 2. Not only did she get to style some of her favorite pieces at the Nov. 2 affair, the Tennessee native also happily enjoyed breakfast treats like biscuits and grits at the Southern-style restaurant.

Kumail Nanjiani
IndieWire Honors Acceptance Speeches: Sterling K. Brown, Issa Rae, and More — Watch
Kumail Nanjiani
The inaugural IndieWire Honors was certainly a night to remember: The glamorous shindig celebrated six of IndieWire’s most lauded stars of the year, hand-picked by IndieWire’s editorial team: Mary J. Blige, Kumail Nanjiani, Sterling K. Brown, James Franco, Diane Kruger, and Issa Rae. The evening was hosted by comedian Nick Thune.

The honorees kept their acceptance speeches short and sweet. Sterling K. Brown was particularly happy for the chance to properly thank his wife, having been cut off early during his Emmys acceptance speech. Receiving the Creative Independence award, Kumail Nanjiani thanked his writing partner and wife Emily V. Gordon, joking: “I think at least 20 percent of this is yours. I know you have two master’s degrees, but I think this makes us even.”

Mary J. Blige, Kumail Nanjiani and More Made the First IndieWire Honors a Night to Remember
Harold Ramis
One comment kept getting repeated at the inaugural IndieWire Honors ceremony last night in Los Angeles: “This is so IndieWire.” It began with the venue — No Name, a hush-hush spot resembling a kind of gothic speakeasy where attendees are discouraged from taking too many photos, lest they give away its secrets — and continued with everything from the drink menu (New Fashioned Franco, Sparkling Kruger) to host Nick Thune’s jokes (“The venue has asked if anyone has an iPhone 4 — they’re just suggesting an upgrade”).

Indeed, the event bore only a superficial resemblance to most year-end soirées. The honorees — Mary J. Blige, Kumail Nanjiani, Sterling K. Brown, James Franco, Diane Kruger, and Issa Rae — had all been announced in advance, so there was no tension over whose names were sealed inside any envelopes. Guests weren’t seated in an auditorium or dining at luxe tables in a hotel ballroom; they...

Issa Rae in Insecure (2016)
Issa Rae Put Together a Mostly Female Writing Staff for ‘Insecure,’ and They All Have ‘Me Too’ Stories To Tell
Issa Rae in Insecure (2016)
Issa Rae is one of the six names in entertainment being celebrated at the inaugural IndieWire Honors on Nov. 2. Her voice and creativity showcased on HBO’s “Insecure” has earned her the Vanguard Award for television.

The success of Issa Rae takes on even more symbolism right now. Her HBO comedy “Insecure” is the story of a young woman, living in the big city, and trying to figure it all out — while often getting it wrong. Rae said she realized that the obstacles that come with being a woman in this society couldn’t be ignored on her show either.

According to Rae, her show’s writing staff has been sharing and discussing the recent litany of stories about how the industry’s misogynistic culture allowed for high-profile figures to commit sexual harassment and assault, and the unfair pressure put on women in Hollywood.

“In our writers’ room it’s mostly comprised of women,...

Mary J. Blige Is Happy People Don’t Recognize Her in ‘Mudbound’
Mary J. Blige, Jonathan Banks, Jason Clarke, Garrett Hedlund, Carey Mulligan, Rob Morgan, and Jason Mitchell in Mudbound: El color de la guerra (2017)
Mary J. Blige is one of the six names in entertainment being celebrated at the inaugural IndieWire Honors on Nov. 2. Her leading role in Dee Rees’ “Mudbound” was a breakout at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, and shows that the singer has successfully transitioned into a serious acting career. She will receive the IndieWire Honor for Breakthrough Performance (Film).

In “Mudbound,” Florence Jackson is a character who sees everything, but says very little. Yet behind the quiet strength of the wife and mother of a family of sharecroppers – refusing to lose their dreams or dignity in the face of the South’s insurmountable racism – Mary J. Blige delivers a performance in which we see precisely what Florence is feeling and thinking.

“Mary’s able to affect this reserved exterior, but have this very empathetic, alive interior,” said “Mudbound” writer-director Dee Rees in an interview with IndieWire. “Her eyes always are thinking,...

Molly (2016)
There's 1 Major Difference Between Yvonne Orji and Her Character on Insecure
Molly (2016)
Yvonne Orji immediately captured our attention with her role as Molly in the HBO comedy series Insecure, and it's time we give her a proper introduction. The actress plays Issa Rae's best friend, and the bond their characters share is one of the most honest portrayals of friendship on television. They cheer each other on in their careers, judge each other for making bad decisions with men, and always hug it out after delivering some cold truths. But behind Molly's promiscuous, career-driven character is Yvonne, who's pretty different from her onscreen counterpart. In addition to Insecure, Yvonne recently appeared on season three of Jane the Virgin, and she has a lot more to look forward to. Get to know the actress better below before she takes over both the big and small screens soon. RelatedUnlike the Show, the Insecure Cast Are All Actually Friends in Real Life Her...

Performer of the Week: Issa Rae
Issa Rae in Insecure (2016)
The Performer | Issa Rae

The Show | Insecure

The Episode | “Hella Great” (July 23, 2017)

The Performance | The title of the HBO dramedy’s Season 2 premiere is also an entirely accurate description of the performance given by and awesomely typical of the series’ luminous leading lady/co-creator. Over the course of just 30 minutes, Rae, who also (as she often does) wrote the episode, reminded us 100 times over why we felt so strongly that she should have been an Emmy nominee.

For starters, as the character who shares her first name endured a series of brain-numbing Internet dates, she was hilarious, playing Lawrence’s...

‘Santoalla’ Trailer: ‘Something Terrible’ Unfolds in Engrossing True Crime Documentary — Watch
Santoalla (2016)
When Martin Verfondern and Margo Pool moved to a tiny Spanish town, they were looking for a fresh start. Then Martin disappeared.

The strange — and true — story of what happened to Martin is the basis of Andrew Becker and Daniel Mehrer’s new documentary “Santoalla,” the pair’s debut film which they directed, shot, and produced (additionally, Becker edited and scored). The award-winning film premiered at the 2016 Edinburgh International Film Festival and has enjoyed a healthy festival run over the past year.

The film follows “progressive Dutch couple, Martin Verfondern and Margo Pool, had only one dream – to live off the land, far from the constraints and complications of the city. But, when they arrive in the crumbling, Spanish village of Santoalla, the foreigners challenge the traditions of the town’s sole remaining family, igniting a decade-long conflict that culminates in Martin’s mysterious disappearance. In this era of “Peak TV” there doesn’t seem to be enough time to bother with drama and comedy imports. Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls Checks Trump’s First 100 Days (With Help From Issa Rae)
A new web series is looking to inspire action during the first three months (and change) of Donald Trump’s presidency. The show comes from the Legendary-owned digital platform Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls, and its first episode features an assist from Insecure creator and star Issa Rae.

Each episode of the First 100 Days web series drills into one of Trump’s policy proposals and breaks it down with a combination of research, humor, and snappy editing. Issa Rae Assures You: She Is as Insecure and Awkward as Ever
Issa Rae in Insecure (2016)
Issa Rae is rolling up to a cocktail party on Sunset Boulevard to celebrate the HBO show she created and where signature cocktails inspired by the character she earned a Golden Globe nomination for playing on it are being raised in her honor. But the star of HBO's Insecure insists the title of the series still describes her to a T. Issa built a name for herself with her YouTube series Awkward Black Girl, which led to Insecure. Clearly, she has made it, is envied by millions, and is an independent, self-made woman. So I can't help but ask her if she worries about straying too far from the authenticity of those adjectives that made her shows - and her - connect with audiences. She doesn't even blink before answering. "Not at all. It's not going anywhere," she shakes her head. "Even at the Golden Globes, I was like, 'Oh.

‘Goliath’ Executive Producer David E. Kelley on Billy Bob Thornton and Amazon – IndieWire’s Turn It On Podcast
David E. Kelley at an event for Star Trek (2009)
Last Week’S Podcast: ‘Insecure’ Showrunner Prentice Penny on Issa Rae’s Brutally Honest Comedy – IndieWire’s Turn It On Podcast

David E. Kelley was one of TV’s biggest hitmakers in the 1990s, with four shows on the air simultaneously at one point. (In 1999, he even pulled off the unthinkable feat of winning both the Emmys for Outstanding Drama – “The Practice” – and Comedy – “Ally McBeal.”)

But after a string of disappointments in the broadcast arena, Kelley is reinventing himself as a producer for streaming and premium cable. First up: “Goliath,” a legal drama starring Billy Bob Thornton as a down-in-his-luck lawyer who takes on a shady mega-corporation and its equally gigantic law firm.

“I think the ability to be a little darker and to be a little more specific with what this show is about,” Kelley tells us. “There is a burden in broadcast. I think, you’ve got...

Lucille Soong, Randall Park, Constance Wu, Forrest Wheeler, Ian Chen, and Hudson Yang in Fresh Off the Boat (2015)
If the Huang kids thought Orlando was a culture shock, wait until they hit Taipei.

On the Season 3 premiere of “Fresh Off the Boat,” the Huang family takes a trip to Taiwan, so that Louis (Randall Park) can mend fences with his soon-to-be-married brother Gene (Ken Jeong). While Jessica (Constance Wu) is excited to return to her home country, her boys aren’t so sure what to expect.

Creator Nahnatchka Khan told IndieWire about the importance of the Huangs making the trip. “For us it was really, the Asian-American, the Taiwanese-American experience,” Khan said. “That hyphen in there is really important because the kids were born in America. That is part of their identity. We really wanted to explore what that meant when they were going back to their parents’ country for the first time.

Issa Rae in Insecure (2016)
‘Insecure’ Review: Issa Rae’s HBO Debut is Familiar and Adventurous in Unequal Doses
Issa Rae in Insecure (2016)
Mirrors play a major role in “Insecure,” Issa Rae’s serialized debut on the big stage of HBO.

As Issa Dee, Rae spends significant moments of alone time staring at herself in any reflective glass she can find — in her home, at a school, at the office or after hooking up. But Issa isn’t checking her hair or looking for flaws. She’s building her confidence any way she can. Be it by rapping (an old passion slowly rising from dormancy), shouting or imagining future conversations, Issa is trying to figure out who she wants to be, by seeing what side of herself she likes best.

These moments bring out the best in “Insecure” because they’re the most courageous aspects of the young series. Cut into scenes like abrupt flashbacks and traditionally incorporated as bookends to events in real-time, we get to see inside Issa’s mind and glimpse the passion,...

‘Westworld’: The Women Fight Back in New HBO Trailer — Watch
Westworld (2016)
Even before the series premiere of “Westworld,” the issue of how to depict violence toward women has been discussed by the show’s creators and critics. In a new promo for the series, strong female leads, Maeve (Thandie Newton) and Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) show signs of self-awareness, defiance and movement beyond the boundaries of humanoid intelligence.

At the Television Critics Association summer press tour, co-creator and executive producer Lisa Joy addressed the serious nature of these issues and explained the importance of their inclusion in the show.

“[‘Westworld’] is about the best parts of human nature, but also the basest parts of human nature and that includes violence and sexual violence,” she said. “[Rape] has been a part of our nature since the beginning.”

Monday’s debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump could be watched by more than 100 million people, but interestingly, both candidates and their campaigns have been defined less by questions about their policies than concerns about their ethics, Oliver pointed out.

“Polls show that less than half the electorate sees either candidate as honest or trustworthy,” Oliver said, adding that if Clinton loses, she will likely “sit there motionless not speaking until she eventually dies.”

After briefly making up a fake scandal about Hillary Clinton just to test out his audience, Oliver began recapping the various scandals following both candidates, starting with Clinton.

Fall TV Preview: The 17 Most Anticipated Comedies of 2016
Care (2013)
“Mary + Jane”

September 5 on MTV

What Is It? From the writer/directors behind the cult favorite “Josie and the Pussycats” adaptation, this series follows two “ganjapeneurs” who run a weed delivery service in Los Angeles.

I’ll Like It If I Like… The “Broad City” influence is pretty clear, as the show is focused on the tight friendship between Jordan (Scout Durwood) and Paige (Jessica Rothe) and their stoner antics.

Why Should I Care? Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont’s unique approach to satirizing La hipster culture really help this show stand out from the pack of other female-led comedies, while also promising a more surreal touch. Durwood and Rothe also make for an enjoyable pairing. For fans of the pot comedy genre, it’s an easy sell.

“Atlanta”

September 6 on FX

What is it? Donald Glover of “Community” fame returns to TV in his most ambitious project yet, which he produces,...

‘Riverdale’ Trailer: Archie Comics Meets ‘Twin Peaks’ in Sexy & Twisted Mystery Series
Riverdale (2017)
“From a distance it presents itself like so many other small towns all over the the world, safe, decent, innocent. Get closer though, and you start seeing the shadows underneath.” Those are the first words audiences hear from the dark and twisted trailer for the CW’s new show, “Riverdale.”

Set in present day and based on the iconic Archie Comics characters, the drama is a surprising and subversive take on Archie, Betty, Veronica, and their friends, exploring the surrealism of small-town life — the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome façade.

In the first trailer, fans get introduced to a handful of its characters and a murder that has recently taken place. You can watch it by clicking here.

‘Insecure’ Creator, Star Issa Rae on How Hannibal Buress Gave Her That First Big Break
Issa Rae in Insecure (2016)
Diversity was the big topic of discussion at the Television Critics Association’s Summer Press Tour panel for HBO’s new comedy “Insecure” on Saturday. Issa Rae, the creator and star of the show, was told that she just may be the first black woman to accomplish that duel success. (It was later recanted; she’s actually the second, after Wanda Sykes‘ “Wanda at Large” 13 years ago.) Rae was asked about how she found her agents and managers in a system that’s famous for its lack of diversity. Also Read: Issa Rae Is 'Insecure' in First Trailer...
