I liked Meghan Markle before she married Prince Harry, but my opinion has slid considerably since then, and this offering from Netflix has done little to stop the slide southwards.
The show is beautifully produced, dreamy really but that is my biggest issue with it. It all feels forced and fake. The food looks lovely but isn't exactly groundbreaking, and sadly most people watching are unlikely to have the funds or time to replicate any of her creations.
Her baking a cake yet hating baking is laughable, and the syrupy sycophants who turn up to shower her with praise I found unrealistic and offputting.
Despite all of this, I cannot help but feel pity at her failed attempts to stay relevant and grow her sphere of influence. If this was my schooldays fro. The 80s, Megan would be described as a 'try hard'. It is like watching a train wreck in slow motion, and hating every second yet unable to tear your eyes away.
In reality I think this venture was doomed whatever direction she took. If she had done budget friendly recipes for the average struggling family, people would have branded her false, instead she is now out of touch with the average viewer who has neither the time nor money to replicate her efforts. Those who can, have probably been doing everything she has been doing for years, but better and without a camera in her face. The scenes which actually showed the netflix crew made me laugh, I felt as though it illustrated how far her star has fallen, she is so friendless she is having to get pally with the crew. If the cameras are off though, does she even give them a second glance? I wonder...
I think her greatest future success will come from returning to her original plans when she fled back to the US with Harry, and that would be to stay out of the limelight, stop trying to 'make it', and just live a quiet understated life away from the cameras. Most will finally give her the respect she craves.
I wish her luck, she is going to need it. Needless to say, no plans to watch any more of her show. Not a fit for me, likely not a good fit for most people.
