Close, but no Cigar!

A neat adaptation of the Classic '12 Angry Men' by Sidney Lumet. Brajeswar Dutta, a Lawyer gets a case where a 19 year old allegedly killed his own brother and is to be in hearing tomorrow, with plenty of 'evidence' on him- An old man who heard him running after the murder and a lady who witnessed this murder through her window. The story is similar to the original, but the jury takes place on the lead actor's head and happens at fascinating places- An Art Gallery, Middle of a flyover, On a movie theater, beach and a forest. Dialogues were sharp and performances were extraordinary. Recommended! But could have bought in some new plot as for those who watched 12 angry men, it could be repetitive.

Fresh Presentation but Comes with Flaws

This is a bold and imaginative adaptation that stands out for its presentation, creating a surreal and visually striking experience. The film's screenplay and plot have also been thoughtfully adapted to reflect West Bengal's socio-cultural scenario, grounding the story in a local context that adds authenticity and relevance. The cinematography and background score are strong aspects of the film, helping to create a compelling atmosphere. The visuals are thoughtfully composed, and the music supports the tone of the narrative well. The film maintains a unique tone throughout, staying true to its vision.

However, while the concept is fresh and the presentation ambitious, the execution isn't without flaws. The direction and screenplay are the film's biggest weakness, suffering from overlapping, unnecessary, and at times clichéd dialogue. This affects the overall engagement and flow. Additionally, some of the performances feel unconvincing and forced, suggesting that a few casting choices may not have been the best fit for their roles.

Despite these shortcomings, Shotyi Bole Shotyi Kichhu Nei deserves credit for trying something unique. It may not be perfect, but it offers a unique cinematic experience that's worth watching for its creativity and visual storytelling.

An excellent adaptation of a classic!

I don't remember writing a detailed film review in IMDb, but this film deserves one due to two primary reasons: 1. This is the best film of Srijit Mukherji that I've seen in theatres.

2. This is the comeback of this extremely talented filmmaker that as fans, we had all been waiting for.

When it was first announced that Srijit Mukherji was going to adapt '12 Angry Men' in Bangla, I was very skeptical, given SM's track record over the last few years ('Padatik' was very good, and 'Tekka' too I liked). This was serious business. Adapting one of the greatest films of all time is a risky proposition. I didn't find the teaser or the trailer very unique, but the film convinced me to become a fan of SM once again.

Positives: 1. The performances: I would be doing the film a disservice if I didn't start with performances. EVERY SINGLE ACTOR WAS BRILLIANT! I don't want to take individual names here, because then I have to write all the 12 names, which is, frankly speaking, unnecessary. Every single one of them perfectly understood the tone and pitch of their individual characters and performed to perfection.

2. The screenplay: This has been one of my recurring complaints regarding SM's recent films (barring 'Padatik'). This film has a runtime of 2 hours and 7 mins with an absolutely tight screenplay. Not a single scene feels boring or unnecessary while giving every single character space. That's a tough balance to strike with a multi-starrer like this.

3. The cinematography: Every single scene is shot beautifully. There are a few location changes, and those have a reason (won't reveal that here because that would be a spoiler). The frames are pretty good and the camerawork, especially at two points at the end of the film, is superb.

4. The dialogues: SM's films always have good dialogues, and here every single character has got some great lines. The humor, especially in the first half, is unexpected, and it really works.

5. The music: The film has two songs, both placed impeccably in the film.

6. The overall concept of integrating the jury: As we know, the jury system has been abolished in India a long time ago, but the technique that has been used to integrate that in this film, I found that to be pretty ingenious.

7. The easter eggs: A scene showing 'Ek Ruka Hua Faisla' being performed on stage, small references to a few of SM's previous films, and a beautiful Tenida reference were beautifully integrated with the screenplay.

Negatives: 1. This film has one major negative point for me, which is actually a little important with respect to the screenplay, but it is a problem that cannot be really helped. The backstories of a number of characters have been shown here. Although that does provide context behind the reasoning of these characters, it also somewhat takes away the shock element of every revelation and decreases the overall philosophical impact of the film. It feels a little predictable, that is all.

2. At certain points in the film, it feels like the reasoning of quite a few characters is forced, that is, they already have doubts, but still are doggedly sticking to their original decision, which feels a little unrealistic at times.

Overall, I have to say, this is Sijjidda's true comeback. I was mighty impressed by the film and the scenes are still etched in my brain. I hope he continues this streak and keeps making films of this, or an even higher level.

9/10.

Srijit Mukherjee is back!

After watching #ShotyiBoleShotyiKichuNei I am convinced that Srijit Mukherji is back!! What an adaptation....

I don't think I am qualified enough to comment on his art, but as an avid movie lover of all kinds, I think Srijit Sir has once again proved that he is the ruler...

About the actors, Parambrata Chattopadhyay , Kaushik Ganguly , KoushikSen and Ritwick Chakraborty are the pillars, like I said, they are masters of their trade and don't need anyone's signing off - but the others have all contributed in the right measure like a beautifully orchestrated symphony... Sauraseni Maitra you nailed it in a single scene, Kanchan Mullick my respect for you keeps growing, Anirban Chakrabarti so good to see you in a different kind of a role, Ananya Chatterjee the voice...loved it...kudos to everyone...

Brilliant vision, brilliant directorial creativity, excellent cinematography...I can go on and on...

IT'S NOT JUST A MUST WATCH .. IT'S A CELEBRATION OF CINEMA...

Is it possible to improve on perfection?

It's hard to imagine any remake or adaptation rivaling the seminal courtroom classic "12 Angry Men," yet here I am, witnessing something that manages to build on Sidney Lumet's vision and take it to new heights.

Admittedly, my bias may show since the film is in my native language, but there are certain nuances and a unique expression of emotions that only the language of Tagore can capture, and which Shakespeare's language simply cannot.

The stellar cast of actors were equally enthralling though felt underutilized at times, delivering powerful performances to bring Srijit's vision to life. In the poignant words of Parambrata, "Amar jonyo oke keno shasti dicho" beautifully illustrated the cognitive and confirmation biases inherent within the characters in this movie, highlighting how our past experiences biases us towards our present judgments.

In conclusion, it was a pleasure to witness Bangla film-lore leapfrogging back to its Heydays through the lens of this future 'El-Classico'. A masterpiece on jurisprudence.

Exaggerated

Too much exaggerated and filled with psrudo-sophistication .... It resembles a talk futile show " Ghonta Khanek Songe Sumon".

Cinema should be entertaining , it should not be like today's modern art like a banana is stuck to a canvas with a tape.

Even I think Shrijeet babu also think himself a lot "boddha" after making this film and feels that critics like me are just fools.

Please, make movies which can create an impact on mind... It should not be scribbles throughout a whole canvas it should be an image of impression.. Personaly I love work of Rituparno Sir , Shiboprosad babu, and I loved films of Srijit babu , but this one disappointing ....

A bold experiment by Srijit that reminds us why the courtroom of human conscience is timeless.

Srijit Mukherji's "Shotti Bole Shotti Kichu Nei" boldly reimagines Sidney Lumet's iconic 12 Angry Men & it's indian adaptation "Ek Ruka Hua Faisla" , blending Bengali sensibilities with contemporary relevance. By transporting the story to the realm of a judge's subconscious, Srijit circumvents the constraints of stage-like storytelling, transforming the courtroom into a dynamic dreamscape-sometimes set in theaters, jungles, or crashing seashores. This clever artistic liberty infuses the film with visual grandeur while remaining deeply rooted in the philosophical core of justice and morality. This movie gave that level of goosebumps & flavours of Srijit's initial films like "Baishe Srabon", "Chotushkone", "Hemlock Society" etc.

The screenplay impressively marries timeless themes with modern socio-political commentary. From the rise of Hindutva ideology to racial and linguistic biases, the film reflects the prejudices haunting present-day society. Through sharp dialogues and vivid character sketches, it delves into the personal histories that shape individual ideologies, making its characters hauntingly real.

Parambrata Chatterjee delivers one of his finest performances as a marginalized figure whose layered portrayal lingers long after the credits roll. Anirban Chakraborty, as an outsider battling his linguistic and cultural insecurities, also leaves an indelible mark. While stalwarts like Kaushik Ganguly and Kaushik Sen stay within familiar territories, the ensemble cast complements each other beautifully, creating a symphony of conflict and introspection.

The film's art direction, from zodiac-themed chairs to striking cinematography by Prosenjit Chowdhury, elevates the narrative into a visually poetic experience. The unexpected inclusion of Bengali Baul music adds cultural depth, making the dream sequences richer and more resonant.

Finally, Shotti Bole Shotti Kichu Nei is a cinematic feast-intellectually stimulating, emotionally stirring, and aesthetically vibrant. Srijit serves up a layered, buttery dish of storytelling-rich in flavor and surprisingly easy to digest. A bold experiment that reminds us why the courtroom of human conscience is timeless.

A Promising Premise Lost in Execution

Shotyi Bole Shotyi Kichhu Nei starts with an intriguing premise-blending dark humor and social commentary-but stumbles under the weight of uneven storytelling and underdeveloped characters. The film's satirical take on societal hypocrisy and existential crises holds potential, yet the script struggles to balance tone, oscillating awkwardly between slapstick comedy and introspective drama without committing fully to either.

Performances are a mixed bag: while the lead actor brings sporadic charm, much of the supporting cast feels wooden, failing to elevate thinly written roles. The pacing drags in the second act, with repetitive dialogues and predictable twists that sap momentum. Directorially, the vision feels muddled-ambitious visual metaphors (like recurring motifs of emptiness) are overshadowed by cluttered framing and jarring edits.

The soundtrack, though catchy, often feels misplaced, undercutting emotional beats. While the film's critique of materialism and identity in modern Kolkata is timely, its message gets lost in a sea of half-baked subplots.

A missed opportunity. Watch only for fleeting moments of wit, but don't expect depth or coherence. Forgettable, despite its bold ambitions.

Must Watch One

The Movie released on OTT Hoichoi on 18th April, 2025 explores really a fresh idea and perfectly makes its Celluloid portrayal. The theme of the Movie is too unique. It is an effort to unmask all representing different sections of the society and bringing into fore realities. But this has been done following a unique pattern. Everything gets focused during informal conversations where contradictory opinions, prejudices, arguments, biasness and others keep the momentum going. 12 people express opinions on a single matter almost all through the Movie. So dialogues serve the most important part here.

The Movie starts with birthday celebration of a judge who is scheduled to announce verdict on a murder case the very next day. As the guests take adieu, the judge rests on an arm chair and goes to sleep. He dreams 12 persons including him discussing the murder case and expressing views before deciding the destiny of the murder accused. The marathon discussion goes on and at the end opinion changes from guilty to not guilty appealing the conscious part of the judge to announce verdict that the murder accused boy is innocent. As the judge rises next morning, he finds himself a completely different person. Thus, the theme is simple but hooking one. The metaphors used in this Movie are also great.

The casting of the Movie is huge but there is no unnecessary character. The roles played by all are matchless. I strongly recommend to watch the Movie.

⭐ A Gripping Bengali Take on 12 Angry Men

Sotyi Bole Sotyi Kichu Nei is a masterful adaptation of 12 Angry Men, and director Srijit Mukherji delivers it with intensity and precision. The film keeps a tight pace, with well-placed twists and strong dialogue-driven tension throughout.

The casting is spot-on, with each actor owning their role and adding to the overall drama. It's a rare courtroom-style thriller in Bengali cinema that stays both engaging and thought-provoking.

Final verdict: A powerful ensemble piece and a worthy adaptation. If you enjoy psychological tension and layered characters, this one's a must-watch.

Trailer was better than the movie

Lets break it out.

Pros- 1. Cinematography was quiet good it's has a very beautiful style of shooting that never happened before in tollywood.

2. The whole zodiac was quite accurate as in 12 signs with their personality.

3. Acting was good from every actor as you can expect from srijit's movie 4. This version of 12 angry men gave the charector more saturation.

So 4 starts. Now why not 6 stars.

Now cons- 1. The just use orenge and tile combo for color tuning. Feels very forced and kind of cheap shortcut for visual.

2. When you give a straight man to act as a gay they will do very over saturated hermaphrodite acting and that definitely the case. Every actor did a good job but still feels like their were more potential with the script and actor that left unused.

3. The overall commercial approach on the dialogues. No depth in the dialogue just slang. Yes though I found those slangs unfunny unnecessary comic releaves many was laughing at it.

4. No charactor growth for any charactor thought all the charectors' debate were in mind but it would be nice to see.

Don't go to cinema hall to watch this. Wait for hoichoi.

Terrific, Violent, Screaming!

Terrific, Violent, Screaming. What would externally appear as a mere judge's verdict has been portrayed brilliantly as a take on The Jury of the human mind. Doubt creeps in beyond all convincement, combatting against unshakable biases and beliefs of what's true and false, and in the end, the truth loses its existence! How the Jury of the mind has to go through a violent frenzy, conflicting with each other, delving deeper layers and finally uncovering the surface together, an individualistic aggressive tussle becoming unanimous to arrive at the final verdict regarding anything for that matter. Once again, a masterpiece worth of justice none other than the Aantel of Bengali Cinema, Srijit Mukherji!

Portraying Faith with Fairness: Rethinking Hindu Representation in Golpo Holeo Sotti

Golpo Holeo Sotti attempts to weave together elements of folklore, faith, and socio-political commentary into a thought-provoking cinematic experience. One aspect that particularly stood out was the film's portrayal of Sanatan Hinduism, especially in its more orthodox or traditionalist form. The filmmakers clearly intended to explore the cultural roots and spiritual dimensions of the faith, though the execution occasionally veers toward portraying a narrower, more rigid perspective of the community.

While artistic liberty is part and parcel of storytelling, I sincerely hope that in future works-especially in the wake of deeply unsettling events like the Murshidabad incident-filmmakers will take a more measured and balanced approach. It's crucial that upcoming films make a conscious effort to represent the Hindu community as it truly exists on the ground: diverse, layered, and overwhelmingly peaceful.

Sanatan Dharma is a tradition that embraces tolerance, philosophical depth, and coexistence. Yet, public narratives-both in news media and popular entertainment-often reduce it to simplistic binaries. Cinema holds immense power to either reinforce these reductive views or challenge them by offering more holistic and respectful representations.

As such, while Golpo Holeo Sotti deserves recognition for initiating a conversation around faith and community identity, it also serves as a reminder of how much more needs to be done in portraying Hinduism, and its followers, with authenticity and empathy. One can only hope that future films will rise to this responsibility-moving past stereotypes and dramatizations-and instead highlight the lived realities, spiritual richness, and peaceful foundations that define the Hindu way of life.

The True Meaning

I don't know people may not think in that way, this movie really changed the meaning of the song, if you watch the movie very carefully and listen to everything without skipping you will feel that the meaning of the theme song you knew was different or many may already know the real inside meaning but it's time for them to know whether they know it right or not!!! People will try to criticize the movie in a lot other ways but the inside story and so many different stories linked together, it is what it is. The title of the movie is so appropriate that people won't regret watching the movie just because the title seems interesting. Watch it or regret...

Tuk Tuk, The Longest 90 Minutes

The acting is fairly good and the overall execution is moderate, but honestly, who wants to sit through such a slow-paced drama in 2025? Within just 30 minutes, the film becomes tiresome and hard to tolerate. In an era dominated by high-octane visuals, fast editing, and mass appeal cinema, this film feels like a tedious throwback. The storytelling lacks urgency, and the 90-minute runtime feels much longer than it should. With so many fast-paced, engaging options available today, this movie simply fails to hold attention or offer anything memorable. It struggles to justify its own existence in this cinematic age.

Not Good 👎🏻

That same boring Hindu muslim context! Very very very Bad voice over or dubbing! Sounds really unrealistic... and thats for all Bangla films these days! A non bengali character who is trying to speak bengali, that accent is very bad! Full of unnecessary characters, plots, dialogues, scenes & that Rabindra sangeet is just so so unfit for this film specially at that point of use! These days of Bengali film makers, they forgot the use and importance of Background sound effects!!! Useless director! The main trauma, this industry is facing is lack of "Bengali Cultured Film Makers"... Those who are making or financing films, they have totally forgotten their culture, religion and the core Bengali from inside! Thats why their own audiences are not getting connected with the plots... films... characters... anymore!!!

Directors like Srijit, are the black hole of this industry!!!
