If Jimmy Fallon ever has an idea for a TV show that isn’t so aggressively unfunny and corporatized that it puts permanent frown lines on the faces of actual comedians, he should have it bronzed.
In 2025, the late-night host has become the most endangered subspecies of comedian, thanks to shifting trends in content distribution and political pressure from the highest office in the country. Jimmy Fallon will take NBC’s “Tonight Show” to Detroit for a special episode, one of a handful of non-traditional broadcasts of the program he is undertaking in the fall.
The late-night host will tape one “Tonight” episode at the Detroit Opera House on Sunday, September 14, and it will air the following night, September 15, on NBC. Ford Motor Co., a longtime sponsor of “Tonight,” will support the special broadcast. The large automaker has been a backer of the facility and its arts mission for more than two decades.
Fallon is also taping special “Tonight” broadcasts meant to air Sunday nights following NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” and late local news on its various affiliates. Those editions will air once a month or so, starting September 21. Matthew McConaughey and Eric Church will serve as guests.

Josh O’Connor and Paul Mescal have been wanting to make “The History of Sound” for five years. But the two actors were both in such demand that it kept being pushed back until they finally became available at the same time.
Now, O’Connor finds himself in the odd position of having to promote four movies coming out this fall. Is he tired? “Yeah, I am,” he said on Zoom just after the Telluride Film Festival. “I’ve maxed out a little bit.”
The two actors met during the pandemic, on Zoom, after O’Connor watched “Normal People” and like many of us, believed he was discovering an exciting young talent. He emailed his American agent: “You have to see this kid. He’s amazing.” His agent had already signed him. It turns out Mescal had been watching O’Connor, as well. The two got on famously, and have been chums ever since.

It's never too late to try something new. During a recent visit to The Tonight Show, Tony Award-winner David Byrne shared how his American Utopia stage show led him to an unexpected side gig. "Fred Armisen, he'd seen the Broadway show and saw that I could get a laugh," recalled the musician. "[He] said, 'David, you should do some stand-up.'" Armisen went on to invite him to his own show, which he performs in Los Angeles. "He said, 'You can come. It's not announced. Nobody knows who my other guests are.'" For his comedy act, Byrne would project a slide from a slideshow and tell a joke to describe the picture.

President Donald Trump recently took aim at yet another late night talk show, this time at Late Night with Seth Meyers, and the host's reaction was quite surprising. Trump regularly criticizes the late-night hosts for making fun of him.
The former Apprentice star claimed there was a rumor that Meyers' contract had been extended, even though the renewal had actually been announced in 2024, and said he had low ratings and no talent.
Many of the late night shows have been on summer hiatus, but Meyers finally got to speak out about Trump's criticism during an interview with Kumail Nanjiani on Late Night with Seth Meyers, who congratulated the host for "getting on Trump's radar.

Following President Trump’s uncharacteristic week-long disappearance from the public eye, Jimmy Fallon has decided that there will be one definitive sign indicating “something’s actually wrong” going forward. And it’ll be something the vice president does.
During his monologue on Tuesday night, returning after a two-week hiatus for Labor Day, Fallon poked fun at Trump’s odd absence, which began last week following a cabinet meeting. The president’s calendar was cleared of any events or speaking engagements, and the few photos released of him were blurry and far-off. It led many to speculate that perhaps Trump had died, or at the very least had a major health scare.

The greatest late-night host of all time wasn’t nearly as fun as soon as the lights went out.
In the history of talk show comedy, there may never have been another host whose on-air personality differed from his true self quite like Johnny Carson. At “Saturday Night Live,” there’s drama before you get to the comedy.
Every year at about this time, credulous observers of the venerable late-night NBC showcase get flustered by a series of cast changes that roll out about four to six weeks ahead of the next season premiere of the program. Sometimes, “SNL” just adds a few featured players. In other years, a good chunk of cast veterans opt to depart. At some points in time, cost constraints or network edicts have forced executive producer Lorne Michaels to make personnel moves he might not otherwise wish to put into practice.
The increase in hand-wringing around the process, which has become an ingrained element of the “SNL” calendar, is more humorous than some of “SNL’s” skits.

The show was so popular, ABC and CBS didn’t bother trying to compete for years. Because The Tonight Show was making so much cash, Carson’s frequent guest hosts wanted in on the action.

Jay Leno recently earned praise from Maga media figures for hearkening back to a simpler era of television, pining for the day when late-night comedians were equal-opportunity offenders, gently poking at both sides of the political aisle.
“Why shoot for just half an audience all the time? You know, why not try to get the whole? I mean, I like to bring people into the big picture,” he told David Trulio of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute in an interview posted July 22.
But in lamenting the anti-Trump sentiments coming from the likes of Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart and Jimmy Kimmel, the former “The Tonight Show” host and his recipe to Make Late-Night Great Again reveals an obliviousness to how the world has changed when it comes to media and politics: more content chasing a highly fragmented audience that increasingly finds news and entertainment within their own ideological silos.

Carson famously banned a number of guests from his show, including Joan Rivers, Rich Little and singer Lola Falana, who reportedly ended up on Carson’s shit-list simply because she was friends with his mortal enemy: Wayne Newton.

In fact, Gutfeld helped Fallon land his best ratings since December 2023.
As first reported by The Wrap, the August 7 episode of The Tonight Show drew 1.7 million viewers which is the most-watched episode of the show since December 19, 2023 when guests Bradley Cooper, Martha Stewart, and Rufus and Martha Wainwright dropped by. The highly-rated episode helped to lift The Tonight Show’s overall average for the week of Aug. 4 to its most-watched week since May 19, 2025.

In Wes Craven’s 1997 hit slasher “Scream 2,” a movie-obsessed character spouts off the three rules of horror sequels: The body count is always bigger; 2. The death scenes are always much more elaborate; and 3. Never, under any circumstances, assume the killer is dead.
Those same rules could apply to late-night comedy’s approach to tackling Trump 2.0. Just over seven months in, Trump’s threats have already spurred a flurry of corporate parents to ante up large sums of money to settle lawsuits many experts deemed frivolous (higher body count), Stephen Colbert was fired from “The Late Show” mere days after blasting Paramount for paying the president (more elaborate death scene) and a scandal involving Jeffrey Epstein’s client list that would have ended any other president’s tenure continues to be carefully brushed aside by Trump allies in power (don’t assume the killer is dead).

Young Judd Apatow was fearless, at least when it came to approaching his comedy heroes. He started Comedy Club, a show on his 125-watt high school radio station, as an excuse to cold-call comedians for interviews. Who says yes to a convo with a high school kid? “I was basically tricking everybody into speaking to me,” Apatow confessed to Graham Bensinger, “and nobody ever asked. The landscape was very different — no one wanted to talk to comedians.”
Apatow’s it-doesn’t-hurt-to-ask approach landed him interviews with up-and-coming comedians like Jerry Seinfeld, Steven Wright and Garry Shandling.
Another comic on Apatow’s list was pre-Tonight Show Jay Leno. “I interviewed him at this comedy club, Rascals Comedy Club in New Jersey,” he explained. “You know, he just was so nice. Some people would be incredibly gracious and talk to me for like an hour. Leno was like that.”

As most people are already aware, Jay Leno recently took a break from joyriding around Los Angeles in vintage death traps and nursing suspicious injuries to weigh in on the state of modern late-night comedy.
The former Tonight Show host made headlines for his suggestion that hosts shouldn’t “alienate one particular group” with their polarizing political comedy. “I don’t think anybody wants to hear a lecture,” he theorized.
The statement was blasted for being wildly hypocritical — not just because Leno’s argument against taking political sides was made during an interview with the literal Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation, but also because Leno himself has a long history of “alienating” political comedy.
One person who clearly wasn’t a fan of Leno’s interview was Last Week Tonight host John Oliver, whose undesirable lectures have earned 30 Emmy Awards (so far). “I’m going to take a hard pass on...

There will be no more episodes this month of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert after the episode on August 7. According to TVInsider, the show is taking a summer break and will return only in September. The news of the hiatus comes after the host announced on July 17 that his show will come to an end after its eleventh season in May 2026.
This hiatus is not a direct response to the cancellation news and was planned for weeks. However, Stephen Colbert could definitely use this break after the tough month he had in July. Interestingly, the mini-hiatus comes at a time when the ratings of the show are surging, probably as a show of support for Colbert.

It wasn’t fun to watch Greg Gutfeld on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Unfortunately, it was better television than the segment before Gutfeld, which featured the barely animated Jonas Brothers trudging through a bit of terrible interviewing from Fallon. What was most unfortunate is that compared to Fallon, Gutfeld was a television livewire, bursting with energy. It was a dramatic contrast to Fallon, who felt flat in comparison.
Fallon received criticism (including from me) for choosing to have Gutfeld, the host of Fox News’ hit late-night show Gutfeld!, on The Tonight Show. It felt like a second act of ruffling Trump’s hair, an attempt to humanize and further legitimize the right wing. Even though the pair stayed clear of politics, there was a clear political message The Tonight Show was sending out: We might make fun of Trump, but we’re not above courting his voters to boost ratings.

Fox News’ Greg Gutfeld made a memorable late night appearance on NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” — in large part thanks to him reminding the program’s host about a roving drunken night 15 years ago that Fallon didn’t seem to remember himself.
It started at an “illegal speakeasy” in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood where Fallon tackled Gutfeld “like a giant golden retriever,” and it ended at a nondescript gay bar in the same neighborhood.
“This is hilarious. We’ve met before,” Fallon said at the top of Thursday night’s interview.
“Yes, you have no memory of it, which is understandable, because we were wasted,” Gutfeld said.
The self-professed King of Late Night then went on to describe his friend Tracy, a mutual friend of Fallon’s who’s “a cross between a Viking and a larger Viking.” Tracy apparently opened a speakeasy “the size...

More of the president’s tariffs went into effect this week, hitting multiple countries. But there are two places those tariffs didn’t hit, Jimmy Fallon joked on Thursday night.
The NBC host kicked off his monologue with the news of Trump’s tariffs, pointing out that they were imposed on more than 90 countries, including Canada, Brazil, India and more. The move comes as the current U.S. economy already faces strain from Trump’s previous trade war moves.
“The only places Trump didn’t charge are North Korea and Epstein Island,” Fallon joked.
The “Tonight Show” host then explained that, in the case of Brazil, the tariffs will “dramatically” increase the prices of fruits like bananas, mangoes and pineapples.
“Edible Arrangements was like, ‘As long as you don’t raise the prices of cantaloupe and long toothpicks, we’re good!'” Fallon joked.

Greg Gutfeld was an interesting booking on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon given some of his past comments on his own talk show on Fox.
But Gutfeld largely avoided talking politics, or his views on late-night, during his debut on the NBC show.
Coming out immediately after a segment where the Jonas Brothers were dressed as wizards, Gutfeld fell into Fallon’s arms and then quickly began telling an anecdote about when he and Fallon first met 15 years ago in an “illegal speakeasy” in Hell’s Kitchen. “We were wasted,” he begins. “Inside, it looked like a place where special ops forces water board terrorists.”
He said Fallon and his buddy were wrestling before Fallon ripped a cigarette out of his hand, before feeling bad and buying him a new pack. The group then departed for another bar. “It definitely happened,” said Fallon, who was seemingly only just about remembering this interaction.

I imagine that Jimmy Fallon wakes up every day in an Uncut Gems level of angst and anxiety. Except, instead of being in the hole for sports betting, the anvil hanging over his head is simply keeping his spot as the host of The Tonight Show. Every day is Groundhog Day, a desperate bid to find success for a show that’s almost certainly losing millions of dollars per year.
In his desperate bid for relevancy, Fallon is trying out new things on his show — sometimes standing up to Trump; sometimes, like tonight, having on the host of Fox News’ hit late-night show Gutfeld!, Greg Gutfeld. It’s further proof there’s no clear morality driving Fallon’s show, or even a strategy. Just a desperate bid to stay on the air.
That’s probably why Fallon got cozy with Gutfeld for a grand total of 10 minutes on The Tonight Show.

Jay Leno should have known what he was getting into when he told the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation that today’s comedy has become “just really political.” Comedians who clearly state their positions are alienating half their audiences, he complained. “Why not try to get the whole? I like to bring people into the big picture. I don’t understand why you would alienate one particular group — or just don’t do it at all... Just do what’s funny.”
The blowback was immediate. John Oliver heard the interview and decided, “I’m going to take a hard pass on taking comedic advice from Jay Leno.” And his old Daily Show partner, Jon Stewart, had no patience for Leno’s idea of avoiding “jokes about things you actually think.”
“The whole thing,” Stewart said, “is fucking ridiculous.”

Jay Leno didn't invent late-night TV, but his contributions went a long way in defining what the genre could be. However, the former Tonight Show host's style wasn't for everyone ... including some of today's stars. John Oliver took it upon himself to push back against Leno's recent criticism of late-night in 2025.
According to Leno, today's hyper-politicized late-night shows aren't what audiences want to see. “I like to think that people come to a comedy show to kind of get away from the things, you know, the pressures of life,” Leno said in an interview with David Trulio. “I love political humor, don’t get me wrong, but it’s just what happens when people wind up cozying too much to one side or the other. Jimmy Kimmel has taken his support for Stephen Colbert to a new level in the wake of CBS cancelling The Late Show. Kimmel's latest move not only adds to his history of supporting competitors, but also risks Jimmy Kimmel Live! missing out on
Kimmel surprised the entertainment industry by placing a billboard in West Hollywood calling for Stephen Colbert to win the Outstanding Talk Series Emmy. The image features Kimmel along with the words "I'm Voting for Stephen." Jimmy Kimmel Live! is up for the same award against The Late Show and The Daily Show.
The billboard is near the Television Academy headquarters and other offices related to the entertainment world. Kimmel appears to have picked the location to make it impossible to miss for Emmy voters. It also suggests Kimmel isn't worried about his show's standing in late-night or that an Emmy win would do anything for its future.

Jay Leno believes that late-night shows such as the recently canceled The Late Show with Stephen Colbert lost their way when they started being too critical and “alienating” in their political humor, as opposed to the welcoming and uncontroversial way he called Monica Lewinsky a slut every night on national television.
Over the last few days, Leno’s recent and extremely poorly timed interview about the state of late night in 2025 has empowered the online right and enraged the left as the former Tonight Show host declared to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation that today’s late-night hosts are struggling because they picked sides in politics, unlike himself.
