The NBC late night show will host a one-night-only special episode at the Detroit Opera House on Sunday, Sept. 14. The show will air on Monday, Sept. 15 on NBC and will be available to stream the next day on Peacock.

The Detroit-set episode will kickstart the string of post-“Sunday Night Football” editions of “The Tonight Show,” which were previously announced to kick off on Sunday, Sept. 21.

Jimmy Fallon will take NBC’s “Tonight Show” to Detroit for a special episode, one of a handful of non-traditional broadcasts of the program he is undertaking in the fall.

The late-night host will tape one “Tonight” episode at the Detroit Opera House on Sunday, September 14, and it will air the following night, September 15, on NBC. Ford Motor Co., a longtime sponsor of “Tonight,” will support the special broadcast. The large automaker has been a backer of the facility and its arts mission for more than two decades.

Fallon is also taping special “Tonight” broadcasts meant to air Sunday nights following NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” and late local news on its various affiliates. Those editions will air once a month or so, starting September 21. Matthew McConaughey and Eric Church will serve as guests.

Josh O’Connor and Paul Mescal have been wanting to make “The History of Sound” for five years. But the two actors were both in such demand that it kept being pushed back until they finally became available at the same time.

Now, O’Connor finds himself in the odd position of having to promote four movies coming out this fall. Is he tired? “Yeah, I am,” he said on Zoom just after the Telluride Film Festival. “I’ve maxed out a little bit.”

It's never too late to try something new. During a recent visit to The Tonight Show, Tony Award-winner David Byrne shared how his American Utopia stage show led him to an unexpected side gig. "Fred Armisen, he'd seen the Broadway show and saw that I could get a laugh," recalled the musician. "[He] said, 'David, you should do some stand-up.'" Armisen went on to invite him to his own show, which he performs in Los Angeles. "He said, 'You can come. It's not announced. Nobody knows who my other guests are.'" For his comedy act, Byrne would project a slide from a slideshow and tell a joke to describe the picture.

The Television Academy has announced the presenters for the 2025 Creative Arts Emmy Awards, including “The Bear” star Jamie Lee Curtis, “The Pitt” star Noah Wyle and director Ron Howard.

After a summer filled with reruns, late-night TV will finally get back into the swing this week with all four of the major broadcast late-night shows coming back with new episodes. That’s right, we’re going to be in for a week filled with brand-new episodes of The Tonight Show, The Late Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and Late Night, marking the first time in weeks that all four late-night shows will be airing new episodes in the same week.

Young Judd Apatow was fearless, at least when it came to approaching his comedy heroes. He started Comedy Club, a show on his 125-watt high school radio station, as an excuse to cold-call comedians for interviews. Who says yes to a convo with a high school kid? “I was basically tricking everybody into speaking to me,” Apatow confessed to Graham Bensinger, “and nobody ever asked. The landscape was very different — no one wanted to talk to comedians.”

Apatow’s it-doesn’t-hurt-to-ask approach landed him interviews with up-and-coming comedians like Jerry Seinfeld, Steven Wright and Garry Shandling.

The former Tonight Show host made headlines for his suggestion that hosts shouldn’t “alienate one particular group” with their polarizing political comedy. “I don’t think anybody wants to hear a lecture,” he theorized.

The news of the hiatus comes after the host announced on July 17 that his show will come to an end after its eleventh season in May 2026.

This hiatus is not a direct response to the cancellation news and was planned for weeks. However, Stephen Colbert could definitely use this break after the tough month he had in July. It wasn’t fun to watch Greg Gutfeld on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Unfortunately, it was better television than the segment before Gutfeld, which featured the barely animated Jonas Brothers trudging through a bit of terrible interviewing from Fallon. What was most unfortunate is that compared to Fallon, Gutfeld was a television livewire, bursting with energy. It was a dramatic contrast to Fallon, who felt flat in comparison.

Fallon received criticism (including from me) for choosing to have Gutfeld, the host of Fox News’ hit late-night show Gutfeld!, on The Tonight Show. It felt like a second act of ruffling Trump’s hair, an attempt to humanize and further legitimize the right wing. Even though the pair stayed clear of politics, there was a clear political message The Tonight Show was sending out: We might make fun of Trump, but we’re not above courting his voters to boost ratings.

Fox News’ Greg Gutfeld made a memorable late night appearance on NBC’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” — in large part thanks to him reminding the program’s host about a roving drunken night 15 years ago that Fallon didn’t seem to remember himself.

More of the president’s tariffs went into effect this week, hitting multiple countries. But there are two places those tariffs didn’t hit, Jimmy Fallon joked on Thursday night.

The NBC host kicked off his monologue with the news of Trump’s tariffs, pointing out that they were imposed on more than 90 countries, including Canada, Brazil, India and more. The move comes as the current U.S. economy already faces strain from Trump’s previous trade war moves.

“The only places Trump didn’t charge are North Korea and Epstein Island,” Fallon joked.

The “Tonight Show” host then explained that, in the case of Brazil, the tariffs will “dramatically” increase the prices of fruits like bananas, mangoes and pineapples.

Coming out immediately after a segment where the Jonas Brothers were dressed as wizards, Gutfeld fell into Fallon’s arms and then quickly began telling an anecdote about when he and Fallon first met 15 years ago in an “illegal speakeasy” in Hell’s Kitchen. “We were wasted,” he begins. “Inside, it looked like a place where special ops forces water board terrorists.”

He said Fallon and his buddy were wrestling before Fallon ripped a cigarette out of his hand, before feeling bad and buying him a new pack. The group then departed for another bar. “It definitely happened,” said Fallon, who was seemingly only just about remembering this interaction.

I imagine that Jimmy Fallon wakes up every day in an Uncut Gems level of angst and anxiety. Except, instead of being in the hole for sports betting, the anvil hanging over his head is simply keeping his spot as the host of The Tonight Show. Every day is Groundhog Day, a desperate bid to find success for a show that’s almost certainly losing millions of dollars per year.

In his desperate bid for relevancy, Fallon is trying out new things on his show — sometimes standing up to Trump; sometimes, like tonight, having on the host of Fox News’ hit late-night show Gutfeld!, Greg Gutfeld. It’s further proof there’s no clear morality driving Fallon’s show, or even a strategy. Just a desperate bid to stay on the air.

That’s probably why Fallon got cozy with Gutfeld for a grand total of 10 minutes on The Tonight Show.

Jay Leno should have known what he was getting into when he told the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation that today’s comedy has become “just really political.” Comedians who clearly state their positions are alienating half their audiences, he complained. “Why not try to get the whole? I like to bring people into the big picture. I don’t understand why you would alienate one particular group — or just don’t do it at all... Just do what’s funny.”

The blowback was immediate. John Oliver heard the interview and decided, “I’m going to take a hard pass on taking comedic advice from Jay Leno.” And his old Daily Show partner, Jon Stewart, had no patience for Leno’s idea of avoiding “jokes about things you actually think.”

Gayle King is the latest CBS host that Donald Trump has condemned.

In a Thursday post on Truth Social, the president shared a New York Post report that alleges her future with the network is “murky as ratings for the ‘woke’ mornings [sic] show tank.”

“Gayle King’s career is over,” Trump wrote. “She should have stayed with her belief in Trump. She never had the courage to do so. No talent, no ratings, no strength!!!”

The NY Post article further alleges that CBS Mornings’ ratings have dipped because its a “‘woke’ morning show” plus the “struggling network’s new owners vow to root out left-wing bias,” referring to the Skydance Media-Paramount Global merger.

The Hollywood Reporter reached out to CBS Mornings for comment.

Kimmel surprised the entertainment industry by placing a billboard in West Hollywood calling for Stephen Colbert to win the Outstanding Talk Series Emmy. The image features Kimmel along with the words "I'm Voting for Stephen." Jimmy Kimmel Live! is up for the same award against The Late Show and The Daily Show.

The billboard is near the Television Academy headquarters and other offices related to the entertainment world. Kimmel appears to have picked the location to make it impossible to miss for Emmy voters. It also suggests Kimmel isn't worried about his show's standing in late-night or that an Emmy win would do anything for its future.

Jane Morgan, the elegant American singer who dazzled audiences in Paris nightclubs, on just about every TV variety show of her era and at the Oscars and had a hit record with the lovely standard “Fascination,” has died. She was 101.

Morgan was in hospice care and died Monday in her sleep of natural causes in Naples, Florida, her family announced.

A classy performer known for her silky smooth phrasing, Morgan moved from New York to France in the late 1940s to build her career before returning the U.S. and becoming a very popular singer through the mid-1960s.

She recorded about 40 albums around the world and sang in five languages, making her a true international star.
