Wangan Midnight

Finding an anime about cars is a scarcity these days. So when you do it's like a hidden treasure, and this chest is filled with beautiful car models.

A wonderful anime about the street racing scene in Tokyo around 2007. The music ruled, the car battles were fun and the characters are decent enough. It's no Initial D but it's pretty darn close. Seeing a different mix of cars from different countries was a nice touch. If you don't know anything about cars the dialogue could be a bit dry for you.

All of the car battles were done well. Great noise, great modeling and a cool backdrop but what made this anime for me was the soundtrack. Every song was done really well and some of them have been added to my daily rotation of music.

If you are bored in bed looking for something to watch give it a shot!

There are many different car culture in Japan but there is 2 which stands out as being the most popular. One is connected to the drifting on the touge mostly at night, racing against each other on tight and curvy roads. That subculture is very well represented in Initial D which is the ultimate racing anime for many many reasons. Probably that is why lots of people hoped Wangan Midnight will greatly represent the other very big subculture about racing in Japan which is surrounded around blasting fast on the highway at night. Sadly, this project feels soulless at most of the times, the characters are shallow and empty. Their dialogues are very boring to hear. The races are fine but not that thrilling as you would hope or assume and they are just very repetitive. The whole vibe is just this wannabe feeling all the way through every episode. The CGI and animation is atleast good. If you are a car enthusiast it might worth a shot but don't expect much, definietly not the quality of Initial D.
