Watchmen: Chapter II

A strong sequel

I'm happy to report that "Watchmen: Chapter II" is just as good as the original.

I love the gritty, real-world feel of the animation: really atmospheric in a feature that contains a lot of brutal violence.

For the final DC Animated Universe movie ever - or so they say - they really went all out, getting Titus Welliver, Matthew Rhys and Katee Sackhoff amongst others to lend their talents to bring a good script and story to life.

The whole cast was great, but Welliver (of "Bosch" fame) deserves special mention for his turn as Rorscach.

If this is indeed the last DC animated feature, they definitely went out on a high.

An excellent , but altered adaptation.

The alterations in this variation of the Watchmen graphic novel was more extreme than in Chapter 1 & the 2009 film in some ways , taking some big liberties with the story structure & certain scenes. However it retained the basic story elements of the original source, which the film version altered notably at the end.

For me the structural changes & additions didn't improve the story at all & jarred a bit at first.

Then I began to appreciate the fact that the original source would be impossible to do justice to in such a short space of time, & the changes didn't distract from the momentum of the film.

So, maybe someone who is unfamiliar with the graphic novel may find it easier to 'work out'.

Everything about the production & design of this animation is great. The music is superb , except that it be occasionally overbearing - drowning out the actors voices a bit much for my old ears.

The animation itself is brilliant with many superb moments. Some people have complained about it, tho I imagine the same commentators wouldn't be able to watch any animation pre the CGI if their sensibilities can't appreciate the work on this. Animation is not meant to be solely 'hyper-realistic & ray traced', it is often about a 'broad stroke & impression' than seeing the texture of fabric on a CGI model. The animation should be in the service of the story, & here it does the job superbly.

It should be remembered that the graphic novels 1st animation, that told the story most faithfully to the original, was about 12 hours long , 3x longer than the combined length of these two chapter. So there is no way it could be adapted in a one-for-one manner & it would be unfair to judge it as such.

The changes in this version are noticeable, but it is also refreshing seeing how another writer (J. Michael Straczynsk -of Babylon 5 fame) would approach & handle the story without totally ruining it. Here he does a good job, that in places expands on some 'vaguer' moments in the graphic novel that are only more comprehensible after finishing the story.

"Can you contain the mmeltdowns?"

I just learned that there was a 12 hour Watchmen TV Mini Series that "animates" the original comic in 2008! What a shame I missed it.. And at least there, the often-rigid and just-standing-around characters make sense. Here, the modern adaptation doesn't really help elevate the story with an animated medium that doesn't take advantage of itself. Still, this visually serviceable adaptation continues and concludes issue 6 to 12 of the comics, as an impressive effort on how to summarize the much more detailed and interesting comic in 1 hour and 30 minute. Of course, things are lost.. but (again) works well as an introductory way to consume Watchmen, and in a much shorter format, matching the consistency of Chapter 1.

Makes you wonder the worth of someone rewriting and retelling someone's already great story.. into a more "bite-size snack"? Personally, it failed to make my "taste buds explode". Never compromise.

Not bad

I haven't seen Chapter I, but it felt like "Watchmen: Chapter II" (2024) picks up the old story seamlessly, mixing standard animation with a good-enough plot. The visuals feel like flipping through a comic, capturing the gritty vibe of the original graphic novel while adding a new look that changes how you experience it. Character development is decent, as familiar faces deal with their pasts and the tricky moral dilemmas they face, kind of like giving a good-looking butt a playful slap. The voice acting is solid, though it does remind me a bit too much of Batman tales. There are some pacing hiccups, but overall, it keeps viewers hooked and interested. This chapter was entertaining, and it definitely broadens the Watchmen universe.

November 1st 1985

Plot: From start we see what was left off vague in 1st film, Rorshach caught in prison & war is closely looming in horizon. Everything is connected it needs to be solve before everything turns into Ruin & chaos

Presentation: visual & color effects looks better than last one. But, retro movement remained same, 2nd part does a fantastic job and continues the story from part 1. Also, tries to invest interacted journey of its characters.

Ations: The violence, fights shown this time is little bloody & exciting but sequence were styled poorly which didnt make justice. Again dialogue doesn't help or adds much it's redundant & unneeded.

Direction: From middle to end some metarials felt weak, rushed & poorly executed. This could've more detailed with logically & necessarily. And, main villains Personal motivation, complexity or tragedy dynamics felt off or outshined

Acting: Rorschach, origin, personal struggle, emotional fallout & moral code was very interesting & worth seeing. This time nightowl & silk spectre took the lead voicing performance & brings stronger role than previous

Overall: Watchmen is very deep & consuming story about personal and social responsibility & morality. Whether you like this or 2009s its up to you. But, ending of 2nd part was nor very good. Reason of one major character death. Other than that I've no issues.

That was excellent!

So, I just finished watching Watchmen: Chapter II (2024) and it was another excellent Watchmen movie.

Positives for Watchmen: Chapter II (2024): This second movie does a fantastic job at continuing the story from Chapter I (2024). I was still invested in the journey with these characters and their interaction with each other are still fun to watch. The animation style for these two movies still looks amazing. And finally, the ending to this movie was nice and very satisfying.

Mixed for Watchmen: Chapter II (2024): II am still confident that a lot of Watchmen Fans won't be satisfied with this iteration of Watchmen and I understand that, but I had fun with these two movies.

Overall, Watchmen: Chapter II (2024) was a great closing chapter to this iteration of Watchmen and I was very satisfied with it.

One of the best animated movies of the year

I am a big Watchmen fan read the book, watched the 2009 movie, watched the TV series, anyways this movie is great example for how to make a faithfull movie to a source material; there are some small changes like modifying some scenes either by cutting some of it or adding some or changing the timline of the story, but these changes are pretty small and doesn't effect on what the story meant to show, actually liked the art style here and how we see the art style differs whether it's in the present or a memory or from parallel story of the pirate; ofcourse like most adaptations it doesn't match the book quality, but it doesn't mean it's not worth watching, because I think that this is actually pretty great adaptation and the best that we actually had until now and I think it's one of the best movies of the year; my only complaint here will be that the animation quality just drops in some shots which was alittle bit disappointing, but that happened in few times and it wasn't that big problem especially that the animation quality was pretty great in the most of the movie. So yeah that is my thoughts on Watchmen Chapter 2.

Done deal Rorschach

Rorschach's journey in Watchmen is a testament to unyielding heroism in a morally complex world. Despite his flaws, he embodies the purest sense of justice, standing firm against corruption and compromise until the very end. His unwavering resolve, commitment to truth, and ultimate sacrifice solidify him as the story's greatest hero.

Rorschach's heroism begins with his refusal to conform. Unlike his peers, who either retire or work within the confines of the law, he continues his vigilantism despite the Keene Act banning masked heroes. For him, justice is non-negotiable, and his actions are guided by a strict moral code. He patrols a decaying society not for fame or power but because he believes it is the right thing to do.

The murder of Edward Blake (The Comedian) sets Rorschach on a path of relentless investigation. Where others see a random crime, he uncovers a conspiracy that threatens millions. His determination to expose the truth, no matter the obstacles or dangers, highlights his greatest quality: an unshakable belief in honesty and justice. Unlike his colleagues, who grow weary or disillusioned, Rorschach never wavers.

In the climax, his moral integrity is tested. Ozymandias reveals his plan to sacrifice millions to unite the world and avert nuclear war. While others, including Dr. Manhattan, accept this as a necessary evil, Rorschach refuses. For him, the ends do not justify the means. He boldly declares, "Never compromise. Not even in the face of Armageddon." This line captures his essence: a man who would rather die than betray his principles.

Rorschach's refusal to stay silent about Ozymandias' crimes ultimately leads to his death. Confronted by Dr. Manhattan, he demands to be killed rather than live knowing the truth will be buried. His death is not a defeat but a final act of defiance, a statement that justice and truth are worth more than life itself.

Though brutal and uncompromising, Rorschach stands as the moral heart of Watchmen. In a world of moral ambiguity, he is a rare figure who holds firm to his ideals. His tragic end serves as a reminder of the cost of integrity in a corrupt world. Rorschach's legacy is not just his actions but his unwavering belief that truth and justice are worth any sacrifice.

"We don't have time"

The animated Watchmen movies are the epitome of "let's just get it done". They're doing Alan Moore's Watchmen -- just about.

Nothing is egregiously erroneous here (no needless modifications to the plot; no misunderstandings of the characters vis-a-vis how "cool" we're supposed to think they are; none of Snyder's blunders, basically). It's just that everything is rushed through, the voice actors just sort of read the lines, and the cel-shaded animation, while it sometimes resembles Dave Gibbons' art to a T, is so stiff that it makes me miss the presentation of the Snyder film.

And that's mainly with regard to the characters; the backgrounds are often downright terrible (more noticeably so in this film than I can recall in Chapter I). There are moments where the CGI landscapes and models look more like something from Myst than Watchmen.

The MO of these movies is encapsulated in the scene where Dan "Nite Owl II" Dreiberg learns of the original Nite Owl, Hollis Mason's death at the hands of the knot-top gang; we here expect the scene where he has a moment of weakness and beats up a random knot-top in a way that would've previously seemed more befitting of Rorschach.

But when Rorschach says the line that is meant to lead into that sequence, Dreiberg replies "We don't have time". And so the scene is skipped. If only there was a way to experience this story in a way where, much like in the eyes of the mighty Dr. Manhattan, time is no issue.

One of the best animated movies this year

The story for Watchmen chapter 2 was not what I expected and very well written.

This was one of the best visual styles in an animated movie this year and an example of this is the comic books scenes. Also, it makes it look like the comic just jumped into movie form

I loved the villain in the movie and I thought he was very menacing.

The scenes on Mars where a little boring.

I found all the characters in the film to be really really intriguing.

I love the way the mystery was ended.

The voice acting in the film was really really good and every character had a standout moment.

Rorschach had some of the best scenes in the film.

One of the best animated movies I've seen in years

First of all part one was good but nothing groundbreaking..I went into this hopeful of something slightly better and they really impressed me.

The use of sound and score is one of the best I've heard any movie use. It is excellent. There's a real sense of dread and impending doom and it's built over the 90 mins perfectly.

The animation and sets are incredible but when it's bad it really stands out. I felt there was maybe a few scenes it looked out of place or cheap but that was less than a few mins total(one example John on balcony on mars)

Voice acting can't get much better either. Titus welliver as Rorschach. Rory Baker as Ozzy. Sally and the narrator also put in top tier performances..

Great fight scenes coupled with lots of blood.and gore

Sit down and enjoy this 90 minute adaptation of a classic that I don't think anyone else has delivered.

Brings more information than the second half of the live action movie

I was wondering what was the purpose of this animation, since Chapter I basically followed the same narrative as the film from 2009. Well, Chapter II does add more stuff in, explaining some things left vague in the film, making the parallels with The Black Freighter subplot more evident and even having a slightly different ending which made a lot more sense to me.

I liked the animation, I found the voice acting good, and I rated this this high because when it came out I was blown away by the 2009 movie. I have to hope that without having seen it, I would have been just as enthusiastic about this animation. As it stands, it brings extra value, but not enough to justify its existence. I've heard a lot of people talking about how the comics are so much deeper and better. Why, then, were these two cinematic versions so similar?

Bottom line: Watchmen is a very deep and interesting story about personal and societal responsibility and moral sense. I think it's great! Whether you chose this or the 2009 movie, I recommend them highly. I just don't see the point of watching both versions, since they are very similar. If you don't have anything against animation, I think I recommend this version to the live one.

Grit, Gore, and Goddamn Sally Jupiter

Alright, let me just say it upfront: Watchmen Chapter 2 kicks ass.

If you thought Chapter 1 set the tone, this one punches you in the face with it and then makes you ask for more. The direction? Flawless. It's dark, intense, unapologetic, and every frame feels like it's ripped right out of the comic and soaked in blood and cigarette smoke.

Let's talk about what works:

Direction - 10/10

The directors clearly know what they're doing. The mood, the pacing, the way scenes unfold-there's a sense of control here. You can feel the tension ramp up even in the quiet moments. No scene overstays its welcome, and the big moments hit hard. They didn't just adapt a comic-they translated it, with all the grit and grime intact.

Voice Acting - 10/10

Spot-on. Every voice matches the character like it's their soul speaking. Rorschach sounds exactly like he should-paranoid, broken, and dangerous. Dan's got that lovable sad sack energy. Laurie? Strong and conflicted. And Sally... yeah, we'll get to Sally. Point is: the voice team nailed the emotional beats. No wooden delivery, no cringe-just good acting.

Animation - 9.5/10

Absolutely gorgeous. This isn't Saturday morning cartoon crap-this is high-end, stylized violence and drama. The fight scenes are brutal and clean, the facial expressions are nuanced, and the lighting is pure noir porn. Every scene feels like it belongs on a giant screen in a dark room with a glass of whiskey.

Sound - 8.5/10

Solid. The score underlines the emotional weight without overdoing it, and the effects during action scenes are crisp and punchy. Sometimes the music swells a bit much, but honestly? It's forgivable.

Editing - 8/10

Clean, sharp, gets the job done. Transitions are smooth, especially when jumping between timelines or memories. Could it be tighter in a couple of scenes? Maybe. But nothing that pulls you out of the experience.

And now, Sally Jupiter...

Jesus Christ. I don't know who decided to make Sally the goddess of seduction in this one, but they deserve a raise and a bottle of champagne. She's magnetic every time she's on screen. The animators really leaned into her presence-every glance, every strut, every camera movement around her feels intentional. You can feel the room stop when she walks in. The way they framed her, especially during the flashback scenes, is pure cinema. She's not just eye candy-she's the whole damn dessert tray.

And yeah, let's be honest: the butt shots? Yeah, they're there. Tastefully framed, but not shy either. It's provocative without being sleazy. She owns her sexuality in a way that feels both empowering and thematically relevant, especially given her role in the Minutemen and her complicated legacy. Beautifully done.

---

Final Thoughts:

If you're a fan of the original Watchmen or even just good adult animation, you owe it to yourself to watch this. It's raw, visually stunning, and filled with layered performances and storytelling that actually respects your intelligence. It's not just a nostalgia trip-it's a real adaptation that understands the soul of the source.

Also... more Sally, please.

8/10. Would watch again. With whiskey.

Identifying an Arch Villain

Who is evil?

This animated follow-up brings emotional clarity to a famously opaque narrative. Rather than mimicking the visual aggression of Snyder's film, Chapter II tones down the spectacle to focus on character psychology. It's quieter, more contemplative - and in many ways, more effective.

Dan and Laurie step into the foreground here, their relationship reoriented. Dan is emotionally exposed, struggling to reconcile personal failure with the world's unraveling. Laurie, more distant than ever, teeters between avoidance and reluctant intervention. Their arc becomes the film's emotional anchor - not romantic in the traditional sense, but grounded in shared purpose and quiet desperation.

Adrian Veidt receives his most human portrayal to date. His arctic fortress and bioengineered lynx, once symbols of aloof grandeur, now carry tragic weight. His final exchange with Dr. Manhattan is stripped of theatrics - just a question, and a silence that speaks volumes. That silence, in fact, may be Jon's only truly virtuous act.

Which brings us to Manhattan. If Chapter I established his emotional detachment, Chapter II doubles down. He remains passive until prompted, reactive rather than responsible. A being of immense power who consistently chooses inaction. The film subtly reframes him not as hero or god, but as the narrative's most quietly damaging force.

In contrast, Rorschach - often dismissed as extremist - is revealed here as the one character who refuses to compromise. He apologizes when he's wrong, honors his word, and stands by his principles to the end. He and Dan represent two sides of virtue: brutal honesty and human compassion. Their bond, though frayed, is the moral backbone of the story.

The animation sacrifices some of the novel's intricacy but gains in coherence. Plot mechanics become cleaner, character motivations clearer. The inclusion of the squid - absent from Snyder's version - may appease purists, but the film's real strength lies in how it spotlights ethical contradictions and emotional fragility.

For the first time, Rorschach's quiet victory feels central. A story once defined by spectacle and despair finds something rarer: moral clarity.

The Fall of a Masterpiece

Both chapters of the *Watchmen* animated series are a complete letdown-creatively uninspired, artistically dull, and paired with some of the most lifeless animation ever seen. They fail to capture the depth, complexity, and brilliance of the original graphic novel, reducing its groundbreaking narrative to something flat and forgettable.

Even the divisive *Watchmen* TV series managed to respect and build on the source material better than this soulless two-part adaptation. It's clear Warner Bros. And DC have lost the creative spark that once set them apart, leaving us with a hollow shell of what was once a masterpiece. For a franchise synonymous with innovation and bold storytelling, this is nothing short of a tragic decline.

What is the Sense of making This?

When these came out, I actually thought they were going to be an animated continuation of the live action movie, picking up where it left off. Instaed, its an animated rehash, word for word and almost scene for scene..So I would ask: what is the sense? While the animation is good and even the acting here is decent, its redundant and the rehash is completely unneeded when there is a movie with outstanding acting and story and live visuals.. In other words, the live action movie absolutely eclipses and exceeds anything you would see in this comic animation...There is no comparison.... Now if the live movie did Not exist, then this animation would have rated well Or if it was a sequel and continuation of the movie in animated form, it would have rated well by telling something New...As it stands, once I started watching it, I could only feel WHY?

Honestly trash

I wasted my time watching a water down version of the zack snyder live film, honestly i thought it would be a sequel but its just a anime remake, very disappointed, made the IMDB account just to leave my bad review.

The action and the gore is not as strong in the live film, i was and am a huge fan of the original live film and always rooted for a sequel, i don't understand why is it called "Chapter II" and not "Reboot" because its the same history we all saw in the live film but with less action and even much less impact than the previous one.

Although the animation is good per se it doesn't make justice not even reaches the foot of the live film and its glorious atmospheric feel the live film has.

low budget

Didn't have to pay to re write anything, didn't have pay for actors. Its just like watching the temu version of watchmen.

I started watching it, realised I wasn't going to see anything new or invigorating and immediately turned it off. It really didn't even warrant the amount of work its taking to fill this review with enough character just to share with the world "dont waste your time". Don't waste your time not being a creative genius, don't waste your time watching the same watered down regurgitation of a masterpiece drawn out. Do us all a favour, just do a cartoon on rorschach, its the only character some of us want to remember.
