It's cute and watchable, but I think they missed the mark on Mat Bomer's character. They are making his character seem stupid and I don't think that's what they want. Look at Rose from Golden girls or Georgette from Mary Tyler Moore Show. They were naive, but neither of them were stupid. Linda Lavin and Nathan Lane fit well as Mother and Son. I was excited to hear he was getting a tv show and he didn't disappoint. I've only seen episode 1 so far, but I plan on watching the rest. I'll give them this, they absolutely picked a wonderful cast. And to be honest, I'm happy they aren't straight men playing gay roles.
I really love this show! It brought me right back to being with my nana watching The Golden Girls! We need more sitcoms like this, something that is fun and easy to watch. I don't understand the bad reviews at all. How can you not like something so special? I spent the majority of my day prepping my families favorite dinner and watching Mid Century Modern made the day fly by. I LOVE the cast and can never pass up a Ryan Murphy production. Nathan Lane, Matt Bomer and Nathan Lee Graham should be so so proud. This show made me laugh and cry (RIP Linda Lavin) and just made me happy. We need more happy, bring on season 2!
The previews and trailers made me worried it would be too cheesy, but I've been pleasantly surprised. I've been bored by many of the more recent sitcoms (it's hard to love again after 'Parks and Recreation' was so perfect and so many shows feel stale or overly forced.) Mid-Century Modern feels like watching 'The Golden Girls,' 'The Nanny,' or 'Just Shoot Me' again for the first time - stupid in the best way, chock-full of hilarious little quips, and has heart without being smug about it. If you're a lover of classic sitcoms or a fan of Nathan Lane's character in 'The Birdcage,' you might consider giving this one a go, it's a lot of fun and they have some fantastic guest stars.
Whenever I watch a multicam sitcom for the first time in a while, it always takes a minute to not feel like the jokes are forced and in your face but this one settles in really nicely. Push through the first episode and its storyline setup and you'll probably appreciate it.
Some jokes are cliche but many are very very funny and I enjoy that the humour isn't so clean and conservative. It can be very funny when characters drop the f-bomb and talk about real and relatable gay topics. It also features a great cast with some very recognisable sitcom actors in each episode.
I've easily and enjoyably binged the whole season in one day and would happily watch a season 2.

I don't understand why people don't get the jokes or the fun. There are so many dark things on tv. It's nice to turn on one thing about friends, family and love. It's a breather from all the true crime, depressing documentaries and the news which is mostly horrific. No one makes fun shows anymore. If they are funny it's because you're laughing at someone's misery on reality tv. I like the show because when I get home I just need a cleanse from all the world drama. Just 30 minutes when I can just decompress and this show does it for me. I just hope they do not cancel it because it is not getting critical praise. It's a 30 minute sitcom. Does anyone who posts these reviews remember what those are?
