Poland’s American Film Festival is ready to celebrate its Sweet Sixteen in November. Its industry strand US in Progress is accepting submissions until Sept. 10, looking for narrative projects in final stages of editing.

“We’re hoping that the uncertainty of the future of transatlantic collaboration – if Trump’s tariffs on film production outside of the U.S. are going to be implemented – will make our program even more sought after,” says artistic director Ula Śniegowska.

“It’s the only industry event outside the U.S. that focuses on and gives priority to American filmmakers in order to recognize and bring awareness of Polish production and post-production assets.”

The total value of last year’s awards reached $180,000.

This year, filmmakers will also visit the studios offering “cutting-edge technology” and services, from Atm Virtual to Platige Mocap Studio.

Having tackled the stigmatization of epilepsy in cinema in the short form with a proof of concept film back in 2020, filmmaker Miles Levin returns to the same space with his feature debut. Re-teaming with actor Pearce Joza, and also working with the same title as the short, Under the Lights is inspired by anyone living or has been witness to the brain disorder which causes seizures, brief lapses of attention and/or convulsions. Heather Hemmens, Marco Grazzini, and Antonio Cayonne star in the Miracles Of Christmas movie Christmas Under The Lights. What is this holiday movie about? According to TV Insider, Emily is headed home to her family’s rescue ranch. However, she is reluctant to return. This ranch holds a lot of memories that she has tried to forget. She is not sure if she is able to move forward from her past.

Diagnosed with epilepsy, director Miles Levin refused to hide. Instead, he took an “emotional leap” with the upcoming feature “Under the Lights.”

“The best movies come from journal entries you wouldn’t want anyone to read,” he says.

“If you have a story that comes out of you with no risk whatsoever, it’s less likely to be honest. But if it’s something you’d rather hide under your bed… It can be relatable to other people. These are things I’ve never told anyone, but I made a bet they would understand. So far, the answer has been a resounding ‘yes.’”

Awarded at Poland’s American Film Festival, where it picked up four prizes at its industry sidebar U.S. in Progress, Levin’s drama – currently in post-production – focuses on Sam, who doesn’t want to be defined by his affliction. He strives to experience normal teenage life...

A total of seventeen awards were handed out at this year’s American Film Festival’s U.S. in Progress industry showcase, an event focused on connecting American independent film projects with Polish post-production resources. The two standout winners were first-time feature filmmakers Miles Levin and Katarina Zhu. Their debut films, Under the Lights and Bunnylovr, respectively, took home the top honors – Levin’s tale about a late teen with epilepsy wanting to hit the prom despite the likelihood of having a seizure stars Pearce Joza, Tanzyn Crawford, Lake Bell, Randall Park and Nick Offerman is produced by Vanishing Angle’s Natalie Metzger. Miles Levin’s drama “Under the Lights” received the coveted Polish Film Institute Award at the American Film Festival’s industry event U.S. in Progress, as well as $50,000 cash prize for post-production in Poland.

“It has been an incredibly rewarding and inspiring project to work on. Miles is a force of nature with a clear vision and relentless drive to bring this story to life,” said Natalie Metzger, VP of production and development at Vanishing Angle.

“I’m so honored to have produced it and for it to be part of U.S. in Progress. There’s nothing like this program in America, so we are very grateful it exists. It’s much needed for American indie filmmakers.”

Levin added: “This film has been a 10-year journey and to have the support of U.S. in Progress to help it shine has been very meaningful.”

The fourteenth edition of the U.S. in Progress co-production forum will take place from November 7-9, 2024, as part of the fifteenth American Film Festival in Wrocław, Poland.
