This is a remake of an Italian film, Improvvisamente Natale.
Lucy Devito and Wilmer Valdarrama are Abbie and Jacob Randall. Though they normally visit her father (Danny Devito) in Italy over Christmas, this year they show up in August.
The reason? They're separating and want Gramps to break it to their precocious daughter Claire (Antonella Rose). She's very good but because of her character being in therapy, she talks like a 40-year-old college professor.
Claire is way ahead of them - she's figured it out - and requests one last family Christmas there in the Dolomites. This means her father's parents also have to make the trip.
The scenery is breathtaking, and it's really the star.
Despite the presence of DeVito, it lacks the hilarity usually associated with him.
There's a lovely message, and it's a decent family film, but it's no great shakes and doesn't feel all that Christmassy.

The whole theme is great, and it sort of hit me because I felt similar as Claire when I was 7, last of the "classic" family christmas I had with the whole family, after which my mom took me away and christmas, my favorite time of the year, was never the same, so yeah, I felt the beginning... BUT...
The characters lack consistency, the writing is abysmal, and the only actors that are actually believable are Danny, ofc, and Claire, the rest feel off, and as I said there is no consistency
The character development is done so badly, they literally don't know how to write it, and some actions the characters randomly take are just dumb or out of the blue, there is no build up to some of the decisions.

Where to start with this. The characters are just odd.... And their lives are boring. That's basically the 2 major issues here.
The movie is just boring.
About half way through I catch myself wondering about the running time. That's when you know you have a problem when your thoughts turn to "when is this over."
Eventually I was so disinterested I just played video games with it running in another monitor hoping it gets better.. And eventually it just got obnoxious to the level I just had to turn it off.
If I had to say anything good about it. They all played their parts well (poorly written as it was). So there was that I guess.
Apply performed by all. It's just. People don't act like that. It's like the author had never seen a human before. And at some point I can see even the storyteller must have caught on because they appear to add quirky characters to fill in a lack luster story.
But their so poorly written themselves that it only makes it worse.
2 stars for Danny Devito.. Sorry that's all I have to give.

I'll write the first one and maybe the last one of this terrible movie. Who was it aimed at? It's got characters cheating on each other and a girl who wants to have Christmas in the Dolomites in August. What possibly can go wrong?
The "local" kids are American sounding. The hotel is owned by DeVito and has a staff of (from what we can make out) one Irish guy. And yet it looks like a 4 start hotel. Huge!! Massive rooms and only one guy and a dwarf looks after it? It's weird and stupid. How did they assemble a cast like this for a shocker of a film? It has no charm. None. I can accept B grade films about Christmas with a returned local helping out in the bakery shop and falling for the high school sweetheart that has stayed forever there... loads of those that have enough charm to at least be better than this.
I don't get Hollywood or its stars because what ever they have agreed on it must be in the contract to only have one take, all expenses paid (first class of course) and enough pay to buy the actual hotel they use for location.
And don't get me started on Kelsey Grammars crap Christmas movie ...

Realistic and heartwarming. The scenarios are breathtaking. Real life drama, makes me appreciate my family even more. Antonella Rose did such a good job and her chemistry with Danny Devito was the reason I would watch a sequel! When the puppy was missing and the way Claire found him it was such a special moment.
The guy that works at hotel was so funny. The ballon scene was hilarious. I would have jumped too, I'm so scared of heights, so I don't blame the dad.
I would say a cute, wholesome movie with good acting/directing and life lessons. If you like real story movies this one is for you!!!!!

It loses steam as it goes on, though 'A Sudden Case of Christmas' is fairly good.
The cast are the big draw. Danny DeVito is obviously the main man, I always enjoy watching him. The likes of Andie MacDowell and Lucy DeVito are alright alongside the aforementioned, though it's Antonella Rose that is the star overall - a strong performance from the youngster. Adrian Dunbar has a small but memorable role, even if he is too good an actor for such a bit part.
It's not the most Christmassy of movies, despite the title. That's to be expected given how the story unfolds in fairness, but definitely something to be aware of if you're planning to watch this for the first time as part of your core festive viewing. It was released at Xmas time, but honestly a summer release would've been more fitting; à la the plot.
What's there, though, is perfectly watchable and the Italian surroundings look grand, at least. It only lasts for around 90 minutes, I admittedly did feel it drag a bit towards the end. More meat on the bones would've helped, the finale could've been something more interesting than what we get with the four-legged fella.
All in all, I consider this narrowly passable. 7/10.

This Christmas comedy from Peter Chelsom is a remake of the 2022 Italian film Improvvisamente Natale.
Abbie (Lucy DeVito) and Jacob (Wilmer Valderrama) are a couple on the brink of separation. They take their daughter Claire to her grandfather's Lawrence (Danny DeVito) hotel in the Italian mountains in August.
Only Claire senses what is about to happen and wants to celebrate Christmas in August. Lawrence and his loyal employee Otto go about making sure they have one last family Christmas.
They are joined by Jacob's parents who are also facing a marital crisis.
Peter Chelsom once had a promising directing career in small scale British movies such as Hear My Song and Funny Bones. It all grinded to a halt with the disastrous Warren Beatty film Town and Country in 2001.
He has never got his mojo back. Even though this is a remake, A Sudden Case of Christmas is a poor film that wastes Danny Devito. Not really Christmassy, not aimed at a family audience and not funny.

I've just finished watching A Sudden Case of Christmas, and while some viewers may not fully grasp the underlying message, I certainly did. I found myself identifying with Claire from the moment I started watching. As a child, every Christmas, I was filled with anxiety, fearing that my parents would argue and that we wouldn't be able to celebrate at home with all of my cousins. I vividly recall a particular year when my aunt couldn't make it, and I was deeply upset because the holidays were always at their best when spent with my cousins. The central theme of the film is undeniably clear: no matter the differences that may exist between people, it is imperative to put them aside and come together to celebrate Christmas as a family. Watching Danny DeVito's performance was like the proverbial cherry on top-he is, without a doubt, an extraordinarily charming and hilarious presence. The dynamic between Claire and Danny was truly heartwarming, evoking both laughter and tears. The hotel staff member was equally entertaining, and the cinematography was simply breathtaking. The children's performances were endearing, adding a layer of sweetness to the film. Without hesitation, I highly recommend this movie.

This movie reminds me of "Mixed Nuts," which for me is not a good thing. This movie is all over the place. So many plot lines start and don't follow through, the agendas of the characters get lost throughout the movie, the poster looks like a Christmas movie, which it's not. There's a lot of adults cheating on each other, so it's not a family movie. Just weird. I'd skip it. The only good thing about the movie is the landscape shots of Italy. I couldn't wait for the movie to end. Also, this isn't a comedy. There's nothing funny about it. It's definitely a lame drama. That was my first and last watch.

I'm giving this sweet film 9 stars mostly for the great Acting and beautiful setting. The story doesn't seem too unrealistic like some Hollywood movie plots tend to lean - that turns me off as a viewer since I prefer realistic and relatable story lines. I came for a Christmas movie, which it isn't really, its about family and forgiveness. The young actress playing Claire is outstanding! Danny is also fabulous, as is the entire cast. I definitely recommend this film is you like a cozy little story. It has a little comedy, a little romance, a little culture, and a little suspense - something for everyone.

A very nice Christmas movie. It takes place in the breathtaking Dolomites (Italy). The movie is about Christmas time and relationships. DeVito is always hilarious and so are Jose Zuniga and the actor that plays Otto. I really Loved the chemistry between Danny and his granddaughter Claire. The movie is about a couple that wants to separate but don't want to tell their daughter (Claire) themselves, so they take her to her grandfather's hotel in Italy, so he can give her the bad news. However, she's way ahead of them and already knows whats going on with her parents ( Wilmer Valderama and Lucy DeVito). So she decides to take matters into her own hands and also asks her grandfather (Danny DeVito) to help her make her parents fall in love again, but unfortunately, nothing seems to work. She then asks for a last Christmas as a family (even though is August) and Danny does his best to create a Christmas during the summer. I Definitely recommend to kids and adults to watch. Its really funny and even though it touches relationship issues, it is still fun for the kids to watch.

A Sudden Christmas 2024" is a touching and beautifully crafted tale that reminds us of the true essence of the holiday season. The story of an unexpected snowstorm in unlikely places brings communities together in a heartwarming display of unity and kindness.
The narrative is both magical and grounded, with memorable moments like Clara's discovery of the music box and the transformative power of its melody. The film's message about appreciating life's surprises and fostering togetherness is timeless and deeply resonant.
The cinematography captures the wonder of the sudden snowfall perfectly, while the music elevates the emotional impact. Though some may find the pacing a bit slow in parts, the overall charm and meaningful storytelling more than make up for it.
Highly recommended for anyone looking for a heartfelt Christmas movie that's both unique and inspiring.
And a great acting from a child actor Antonella Rose, she will be the successor of Jodie Foster and Dakota Fanning.
