A forgettable thriller with missed potential

Ad Vitam (2025), directed by Rodolphe Lauga, is a thriller that follows Franck Lazareff (Guillaume Canet), who survives an attempted murder and embarks on a quest to find his kidnapped wife, Leo. As Franck delves deeper into a world of mystery, he is confronted by his past and swept into a state conspiracy that proves more than he bargained for. While the premise offers potential for a gripping and emotional story, the film fails to rise above the clichés of the genre.

Guillaume Canet, despite being a talented actor, feels miscast in this film. His performance, while competent, lacks the depth and complexity that might have made his character truly compelling. It's surprising that an actor of his caliber chose to take on a role in such a formulaic and uninspired narrative. The supporting cast, including Jamel Blissat and Rayan Bouazza, doesn't bring anything particularly noteworthy to their roles, with their performances often feeling wooden and lacking emotional engagement.

The film's biggest weakness lies in its screenplay. The story follows a predictable path, offering few surprises or twists. While it tries to combine elements of action, mystery, and conspiracy, it never fully commits to any one genre, leaving the narrative feeling disjointed. The pacing also suffers, with certain plot points dragging on too long, and the dialogue feels repetitive and uninspired, leaving little for the viewer to truly connect with.

Visually, the film offers some decent action sequences, but the cinematography doesn't bring anything fresh or innovative to the genre. The direction is competent but lacks the flair needed to elevate the film beyond its generic premise. Ultimately, Ad Vitam feels like a classic example of a film that is forgettable, offering only brief moments of intrigue before fading into obscurity.

Rating: 5/10. A passable thriller with little to distinguish it from others in the genre, despite a talented cast and a promising premise.

Engaging Action Film

Ad Vitam is an engaging French police action film. I don't have too much experience with French Action cinema but this is good by any action-drama standard. The lead here, and his wife, are members of the elite French Gendarme. When the film opens there is clearly some police corruption scandal which has endangered the life of his wife and unborn baby. There is some good fighting and martial arts in this one. The action is good. The drama and the police corruption story keep you engaged throughout. The acting is decent, although I watched the Dubbed into English version so it is a little harder to tell how decent.

Shallow plot .Entertaing action

Ad Vitam is a French action thriller directed by Rodolphe Lauga and co-written by Lauga, Guillaume Canet, and David Corona. The film follows Franck, played by Canet, a former member of the elite French police unit GIGN, who must save his pregnant wife Léo (Stéphane Caillard) from kidnappers while evading the police.

The movie delivers some impressive action sequences, particularly the stunts filmed in Paris and Versailles. Canet's performance is solid, though some may find it lacking the intensity of other action stars like Liam Neeson or Jason Statham. The plot, however, feels somewhat underdeveloped, with the action scenes taking precedence over character development and narrative depth.

Overall, Ad Vitam offers a mix of thrilling action and a somewhat thin storyline, making it an entertaining watch for fans of the genre, but perhaps not a standout in terms of plot complexity.

Netflix, like other streaming platforms, has to meet certain content quotas in various regions, including Europe. These quotas often require a certain percentage of content to be locally produced . While it's possible that Ad Vitam was produced to meet such requirements, it's also common for streaming services to invest in a wide range of content to appeal to diverse audiences.

Ma fille mon coeur

Again, needing to review a movie that doesn't need a review with that much characters. 'Ad Vitam' is a French action movie that is only for lovers of the genre, French language, culture, beautiful photography and awesome chase scenes plus bright camera works.

Is it shallow? Not so much, but then again, what do you expect? Go watch heavier stuff please.

The ending alone makes the movie worthwhile with big heart.

Fast paced thriller from France

Ad Vitam was for me and my wife a great ride hell.

The story took me on an emotional level mixed with suspense and lot of combat scenes.

It was interesting to watch inside the private life of the special forces GIGN of the French Gendarmes.

If you are looking for a fast paced movie with lot of action then this one will entertain you no doubt.

Netflix presented again another blockbuster that run already on number one of the international charts. Both leading actors Canet and Cortaillod delivered respectable top performance. Finally the director succeeded in making a good show time.

Congratulations to all the staff. It merita for this high value of entertainment a solid 7/10.

If you liked it see Sous la Seine.

Slow peel thriller

This is a good thriller movie that shows the lives of elite military groups that spring into action in case of big/disastrous attacks. It shows a very important side of the lives of such people: family. Sometimes, we forget that the military people not only sacrifice their lives, they also sacrifice the comforts of staying with their family. And in unfortunate circumstances, these people give up their lives, casting a permanent shadow on the psyche of their loved ones. This film accurately depicts to what extent people can go to save their loved ones.

However, I feel that this movie is a slow peel, just like the peeling of an onion slowly and steadily. It gradually unfolds the lives and motivations of different characters. This is a fresh take, and I haven't seen thriller movies recently made in this style. But I am not sure if this will attract the fast-moving people of this generation who are addicted to 30-second reels on their phones.

From Sacre-Coeur to Versailles Palace: French Action Flick with Guillaume CANET

You wouldn't have expected a role like this from the French actor Guillaume CANET until now, but from now on you'll have to talk about a French Tom CRUISE. In German-speaking countries, Guillaume CANET was known primarily for his role in THE BEACH (2000) with Leonardo Di CAPRIO in the lead role and as the first husband of the German actress Diane KRUGER.

In AD VITAM by Rodolphe LAUGA, CANET plays a former member of the French elite unit GIGN who, after his release, is drawn into a confusing game of intrigue with very bad guys. When his pregnant wife Leo (Stephane CAILLARD, known from CHEZ NOUS (2017) by Lucas BELVAUX) is kidnapped, Franck Lazareff finally becomes a one-man army who can hit, shoot and climb so much that even Mr. CRUISE would be jealous. Fortunately, the elite fighter also has some good colleagues (Nassim LYES from SOUS LA SEINE and Alexis MANENTI from LES MISERABLES) who rush to help with their powerful skills.

Of course, this film has some weaknesses, such as the miserably long flashbacks at the beginning of the film, but NETFLIX has provided a budget that makes such a well-illustrated action film possible in France. The fights and chases on the street and in the air are well done. Breathtaking images of Sacre-Coeur and the Versailles Palace Park included! The film also does full justice to the French PolAr tradition (film policier and Argot). It is a lot of fun to watch and has so far been quite successful on the global streaming service.

In a small role, there is also a reunion with Stephane RIDEAU (in the sequence in Sacre-Coeur), who became known in 1993 with ROSEAUX SAUVAGES.

A sub-par French action film

First movie of 2025...and it's a bit of a dud.

Firstly, a positive. There's some pretty cool action scenes here. I'm not familiar with French cinema but the main actor Guillaume Canet was great and really sold me on his tough guy persona. He really was the emotional core of the story, aside from just being an outright badass. The dude does everything : parkour, driving, martial arts....you name it!

However, "Ad Vitam" really struggled to hold my attention throughout its short run time, and just comes across as a cheaper and inferior version of the "Mission Impossible" series. The story didn't grip me at all. The majority of the film is one big flashback that doesn't even get to the main plot introduced at the start of the film until just over an hour in. For an action film, it's incredibly slow and plodding, and doesn't seem to have any momentum or pace until it suddenly ramps up in the last 30 minutes. It feels like a solid 40 minute pilot episode of a TV series stretched out to 95 minutes to be considered feature length.

Overall, it's not a film I'd recommend. It's typical of what you'd expect from a January Netflix film I guess!

Ostentatively mediocre

A parade of the usual tropes - cops as one big, happy family, the lonely Arab kid who cannot find friends, Semper Fi, the usual stuff, mixed with some betrayals and high stakes political treachery. But you get a chase involving parachutes and helicopters, plus fatally wounded pregnant woman arriving last minute to the hospital, so at least that's that. In the end, in a (cough-cough) unexpected plot twist, the befuddled viewer finds out the heroic to-be-shot wife submitted all the critical evidence to the authorities in time, so all the chases and shootouts were in fact a waste of time and taxpayer money, but the movie does not give us the time to think about such details. In the end, the evil CIA guy is exposed, everybody not shot in the first half survives, and family values triumph. Instantly forgettable and spectacularly bland.

Lifelike action

Rodolphe Lauga delivers a top-notch action movie that stands out in the genre. What makes French films so appealing compared to Hollywood blockbusters is their focus on realistic scripts, grounded action, and authentic characters, which result in true emotional depth and drama. These are the kinds of action films you want to watch because, unlike Marvel movies, you're not stuck watching the same superheroes in endless, exaggerated battles. In this film, the people, the situations, the locations, and the thrilling chases all feel incredibly lifelike, pulling you into the story and making you feel like you're right there with the characters. It's a refreshing change from the typical formulaic films where you're just watching the same A-list stars in the same predictable shootouts. This is an action movie with real substance-a film that no John Wick can quite match.

Poor start

What on earth will a normal guy will do if his house was break in twice before the third time they kidnap the wife. He already knows what they are looking for and still stayed at same house sans any security or awaits the intruders return? Why stayed there with a pregnant wife know she will be at risk in such dangerous situation? What on earth is he thinking? Just a sitting duck or act vainly for things to happen. Such a stupid premise that I stopped altogether. No sympathy for the protagonist and ridiculous story line. Weak plot and characters. There are other better French action movies with better storyline and characters. This is not it. No 'ad vitam' fir this, just move along now.

Story about his family and his baby

At the beginning of the film, it is interesting enough for the viewer to watch the film and the story depends on the heroic man for his family and his child who will be born through his wife. He faces all the difficulties that come to him with great precision and faces people who break into his house. One time he and his wife were captured, and with goodness the heroic man was able to save his wife and child through his friend. Who worked with them to ensure their protection, and the story was detailed from beginning to end.

My rating is very sure about this movie who need a very important watcher to review this movie.

Ad Nauseum ...

... describes the second act, which consists of about 45 minutes of flashback/filler. We get it: they're an elite SWAT unit that works hard and plays hard. Why there are multiple repetitive scenes of this is anyone's guess.

The movie starts well as an action thriller with intrigue, stunts and choreographed fights. Then it screeches to a halt with an overlong flashback sequence detailing the protagonists' personal and professional lives in excruciating detail. All this could have been - and routinely is - done far more economically. Thankfully things finally get back on track when the movie reverts to the present and goes all in on action. It's gloriously over-the-top (Fan Man? Why not?!) and more or less makes the excessive middle section worthwhile.

A GIGN Subculture Spin-off Film

A film tailor-made for fans of France's National Gendarmerie Intervention Group (GIGN). The development of this film was initiated by Guillaume Canet, who serves as both lead actor and screenwriter. While filming the Netflix war movie The Siege of Jadotville in 2016, Canet received training from former GIGN members, which sparked his idea of creating a film about GIGN. He has always been deeply impressed by GIGN's performance in the Air France hijacking incident (depicted in the film The Hijacking).

Canet invited David Corona, a former GIGN member, to co-write the screenplay, and Thibault Levic, another ex-GIGN operative, to act as firearms and tactics consultant. Even GIGN's current commander, Ghislain Retty, gave the project his full blessing, allowing the creative team to conduct in-depth research and even filming within GIGN. As a result, many scenes and details depicting GIGN's work and daily life in the film are drawn from real life, and GIGN has also officially endorsed and promoted the movie.

Speaking of the film itself, Sara May, Netflix's head of French content acquisition, noted that French action cinema has a long history, featuring more authentic stunts, more grounded scripts, and smaller budgets compared to Hollywood. Although French-language action films have become rare in both French and global theaters, streaming platforms have brought new possibilities. In fact, it's now hard to find American action films that aren't dragged out to 120 minutes, filled with unnecessary dialogue, or lacking in intensity.

Poor scritp, multi-genre movie is always a bad choice

I am French and I really wanted to like this movie BUT. The premise heavily projects "action movie" and its misleading. In fact, the movie wants to stuff in too many genres and it's detrimental to its efficiency to keep the viewer interested. If you want to make an action movie you must mostly focus on that. The rest, thriller, romance, mystery can be present but as back up the main theme/genre of the movie. The major flaw of the movie is the flashback which is way too long, gives an off topic feeling, you lose interest in the plot.

The movie industry in France has only like 400-800 working professionals. And its hard for new comers to enter the club with new, fresh ideas. These guys seems to always want to play it safe so they rely and the same story telling style that I have seen for so many years in France. There is no real innovation in the editing, the acting and the plot. The acting/casting here is a total mess. There are absolutely brilliant actors in France but unless you have the connections/recommendations (piston in French) you have, most of the time, chance to get hired. The acting is atrocious not believable at all, the dialogues are parroted. Don't lose your time.

Good French action movie.

Of course some people just can not enjoy this kind of movie, finding it too shallow or whatever, but then again I wonder why they even bother to watch an action movie if they don't like this genre. Because an action movie it definitely is, and a good one in my opinion. Of course you have some exaggerated scenes but not too much and not too exaggerated like we're normally used to in this genre. A good French action movie, it's been awhile since I watched one, this one deserves a good rating. The story is simple in the beginning but there are some good twists towards the end which made it a movie worth watching. The acting was also convincing so give it a shot if you're looking for a good foreign action movie.

Convenient screenplay struggles to deliver obvious fun.

Franck and his very pregnant wife Léo are trying to live a peaceful life. Franck's job is to find the cracks on the cathedral structures. Their peaceful life is disrupted by the robbery attempts at their house which has them worried and the final blow follows when the couple get attacked by a bunch. It gets clear that they aren't random robbers and this attack has direct connection to the couple's time in GIGN squad. Franck is framed and Léo kidnapped by the gang who are after a secret, Franck holds. Will Franck be able to clear his name and save his wife on time, forms rest of the story.

This French film has enough dose of action while majority of the scenes are dedicated to building up the character dynamics. That is why the film is in no mood to jump into action mode. Despite being largely a montage of their operations, the whole GIGN segment is used to establish the love story Franck and Léo as well the friendship with Nico and Ben. The whole build up for the mystery doesn't pay off and this solely is because of the convenient screenplay. The chase including the paragliding one needed to amplify the tension. Despite the short runtime, the film felt dragged and the whole climax though fun, failed to deliver the expected entertainment.

Don't waste your time watching this movie

Predictable plot and at times so surreal as to make you smile in pity for the screenplay. Don't waste your time watching this movie. The paragliding flight scene is embarrassing to say the least. The same can be said for the villain who turns out to be incredibly stupid and clueless. It's a shame about the protagonist's acting performance which is actually quite good although sacrificed by a tragicomic plot. The same goes for the co-protagonist, a sacrificed character who could have had a more central role. Three quarters of the movie are dedicated to a long and cumbersome flashback full of details that are absolutely not functional to the development of the plot..

Avoid the annoyances of many action movies

I found Ad Vitam an enjoyable watch with some good action scenes. Few movies are perfect are they? The retrospective scenes were maybe a little overdone but served to give a better picture of the main characters and did make me interested in them. Many action shows have too many shallow characters that never get hurt yet we are expected to care about them in order to create some tension and suspend disbelief. Ad Vitam did not do that although you do have to suspend disbeluef a bit at the climactic action scene. All in all , a good effort and I liked the actors and the general storyline worked well.
