Exclusive: Greenwich Entertainment has acquired North American rights to Magic Hour, a new indie drama co-written, directed by and starring Katie Aselton, on the heels of its SXSW premiere, slating the film for release in theaters next year.
Starring Aselton, Daveed Diggs, and Brad Garrett, the film follows Erin (Aselton) and Charlie (Diggs) as they escape to the desert to navigate an unexpected and challenging new phase of their relationship. However, the rendezvous shows they couldn’t be further apart, revealing an even more striking turn in their marriage.
Written by Aselton and her husband and frequent collaborator Mark Duplass, the film hails from the latter’s Duplass Brothers Productions. Emily A. Neumann produced, with Mark Duplass, Jay Duplass, and Mel Eslyn exec producing for Duplass Brothers Productions. We were first to report on the project in April 2024.
“I’m thrilled to be partnering with Greenwich,” said Aselton in a statement to Deadline.

Magic Hour (2025) unfolds as an intimate drama laced with surreal undercurrents, a film that both whispers and shouts its truths. Conceived and helmed by Katie Aselton—with Mark Duplass as co‑writer—this is a work born of close collaboration, yet transmuted into something uncanny and untethered.
At its heart lies Erin and Charlie, a married pair who decamp to an isolated Joshua Tree retreat after an unspecified calamity. Their shared history flickers into view through archived home‑movie footage, all golden light and soft laughter. Then, barely twenty minutes in, the story fractures: Charlie’s presence shifts from flesh to apparition, an early twist that reorients our gaze. This choice, daring in its economy, forces us to question every look and gesture that follows.
The film moves within a single, desolate house—its walls an echo chamber for grief. Aselton’s direction is unflinching and tactile, her camera lingering...

Maryse Legagneur’s drama The Last Meal (Le Dernier Repas) has earned the top prize at the Miami Film Festival, winning the $15,000 Marimbas Award in international competition. The award, chosen by a jury, goes to a narrative feature film that “best exemplifies richness and resonance for cinema’s future.”
“After 20 years of silence, a dying Reynold asks his estranged daughter, Vanessa, to share his final meals,” notes a description of The Last Meal. “As she prepares the traditional Haitian dishes of his youth, the familiar flavors unlock painful, buried memories of his life and suffering under the Duvalier dictatorship.
“Set against this backdrop of shared history, The Last Meal is a poignant tale of reconciliation, exploring the power of food, cultural memory, and confronting the past to heal fractured family bonds within the Haitian experience. A beautifully crafted film about legacy, healing, and the stories we carry in our bodies and kitchens.

It’s always interesting to see which films are able to keep up their film festival momentum after buzzy premieres at early-in-the-year fests like Sundance and SXSW. Two to keep an eye on? Cole Webley’s Sundance premiere “Omaha” and Xander Robin’s SXSW crowdpleaser “The Python Hunt,” both of which just notched new wins over the weekend at the 2025 Miami Film Festival.
“The Python Hunt” picked up the Made in Mia Feature Film Award, sponsored by Panavision, which is designed to honor films “of any genre that prominently feature South Florida in their story, setting, and filming location, and best utilize South Florida’s story and theme for universal resonance.” Robin’s film, a documentary about snake-hunters in the Everglades, sure sounds like it fits the bill.

The circumstances of the long-distance relationship between Erin (Katie Aselton) and Charlie (Daveed Diggs) are a little atypical in “Magic Hour,” but director-star Aselton and co-writer Mark Duplass have long been able to cook up tantalizing, high-concept hooks for dramas about mental strain. It seems as if a weekend in Joshua Tree might offer a rare, in-person respite for the couple. But the rendezvous shows they couldn’t be further apart, setting up an even bigger drama at the heart of Aselton’s occasionally frustrating yet considerably daring drama.
Neither Erin or Charlie will mention exactly what’s driven a stake between them after Erin’s longtime friend (Brad Garrett) hands her the keys to his desert abode, and their vague use of “it” can irritate in the time it takes to get to the film’s big reveal. However, “it” certainly has to be big when the two would...

You’ll be thinking about wanting to drink a lemon soda after seeing this. Katie Aselton’s fourth film as director is begging for a spoiler. That would explain a lot but also give away too much. Luckily, the big reveal comes 20 minutes into this sensitively played yet too-obvious drama about a couple who go to the desert to regroup and look ahead to an altered future. Aselton plays Erin, whose mood at first veers with annoying abruptness between mournful and happy. Daveed Diggs is Charlie, full of smiling, even-tempered charm. If Charlie seems too good to be true, he is.
Aselton’s films include The Freebie (2010), arguably her best and a very different marriage story, and most recently Mack & Rita (2022) with Diane Keaton, a critical flop she didn’t write. She plays to her strengths and her indie roots in Magic Hour, directing herself and the other actors to natural, likable performances.

It’s evident, almost immediately, that a film called “Magic Hour” begins, and two people are introduced, Erin (Katie Aselton) and Charlie (Daveed Diggs), and they have a stable, cheerful relationship between them. Video captured at an amusement park perfectly puts their dynamic on display as they self-deprecatingly lollygag about the premises, and from this footage, the film shift to the desert, specifically Joshua Tree, where a lavish home owned by Erin’s friend (Brad Garrett) seems to be something of a getaway for the couple as they, as Garrett himself puts it, “work through all the crap.”
Indeed, there does exist something the two need to figure out, with Charlie’s upbeat demeanor clashing against Erin’s frequent slips into melancholy and an outburst emanating from Erin while the two are out hiking the desolate, beautiful landscape surrounding Garrett’s residence hints at some as-yet-unknown tragedy having occurred no long prior.

Oh, to be a fly on the wall during the writing process that sparked Katie Aselton’s fourth directorial effort, “Magic Hour.” Written alongside her real-life husband (and fellow filmmaker) Mark Duplass, Aselton has made it clear in press materials that the film, about a loving if troubled married couple (played by Aselton and Daveed Diggs) isn’t explicitly about her actual marriage. But it’s also not not about her and Duplass’ long-running relationship. Still, once you see where Aselton and Duplass’ script takes their characters, the differentiation becomes easier to swallow, if not all the more intriguing.
No spoilers here, but suffice it to say, it’s thrilling to wonder at what point in their chatting Aselton and Duplass landed on the spine of the story, one that also serves as a very big twist and an ambitious swing. And, yes, this twist does come early in the film,...
