Major anime juggernauts spawn countless spinoffs annually, yet only a handful of them break through the mainstream. Boruto and Dragon Ball Gt are all popular alternatives to their legendary predecessors, but even fan-favorite shonen have obscure spinoffs, too. And it's a shame — spinoffs sometimes boast more creativity, heart, and artistic ambition than their original counterparts, their creators freed of inhibitions and ready to experiment.
From high school comedy re-imaginings to prequels retroactively making minor characters major, these stealthy spinoffs showcase what happens when creators get permission to play outside franchise guardrails. While casual viewers dismiss them as cash grabs, savvy fans recognize how frequently these "minor" works take bigger creative swings than their more famous counterparts.

Getting spin-off material is nothing new for a large anime franchise like Dragon Ball or the Fate series. These spin-offs can be fun for fans who want to see different perspectives on the same world. A spin-off could also allow for some fun comedic moments where the cast can relax and not have to deal with world-ending apocalypses. But a truly great spin-off anime can stand on its own and introduce new people into anime.
These spin-off titles match and even surpass the quality of their source material. A new spin on the status quo of an anime could bring in a legion of new fans who wouldn't be interested otherwise. The best spin-offs are so good that viewers will likely forget that they're based on another anime altogether. That's exactly what these titles accomplish, and they do it with flying colors.

Alongside the video games and the trading card game, the Pokémon anime is one of the most important parts of the franchise. The main anime has been running since 1997, and is currently composed of 26 seasons, which can be further broken down into eight distinct series. On top of these series, there have been a number of spin-off anime, some of which are more well-known than others.
There have been far more Pokémon anime than fans realize, with some not even starring Ash Ketchum. The currently ongoing Pokémon Horizons has placed its focus on Liko and Roy, while various miniseries have centered around specific parts of the world of Pokémon. There has never been a bad Pokémon anime, but some of them are definitely better than others.

Pokémon Origins accurately captures the spirit of the original Red, Green, and Blue games. The anime exceeded expectations with new information, grounded characters, and showcasing varied team combinations. Mega Charizard X's debut in the series was a significant and unexpected finale twist.
It's nearly impossible to adapt the original Pokémon games. Since it's an RPG where players can form a team of six Pokémon out of a possible 150 (151 if Mew is counted), countless team combinations can be made; there's no such thing as a canon team. Likewise, the story and other goals are achieved based on the player's discretion; even with its linear story mode, the order of events is up to them. This hands-off approach to the players' progression means anime and manga looking to adapt the story have as much freedom to decide how things should happen as the average player. This can lead to extravagant interpretations of the source material,...

Legendary Pokémon like Lugia and Arceus wield immense power, essential for protecting the world from disaster. Rivals that appear throughout the franchise, like Cynthia and Gary Oak, have trained their favorite Pokémon to perfection, providing tough challenges for Ash. Ash's Pikachu, despite its refusal to evolve, consistently triumphs against foes in battles, showcasing its determination.
The strongest Pokémon in the anime all give Ash and company serious runs for their money. They represent tests of their skill as Trainers and the strength of their teams. Often, they will be responsible for one of Ash’s few losses, or be impossible to overcome on their own.
While there are many strong Pokémon both wild and competitive throughout the many regions, the strongest tend to come in two categories. First, there are the favorite Pokémon of rivals and Gym Leaders, trained to perfection to win battles. Then, of course, there are the Legendary Pokémon,...

Pokémon has various spinoffsthat explore other angles of the franchise's massive world, deviating from the typical adventures of Ash and Pikachu. Pokémon Concierge is a heartwarming stop-motion series on Netflix, that turned the franchise into a cozy, laidback slice-of-life. Other spin-offs, like the Mystery Dungeon animated specials, explore more niche titles from the video game giant's history, introducing fans to new ways to enjoy Pokémon.
Being one of the most prolific franchises of all time, Pokémon has many animated adaptations to choose from, including many of the best Pokémon spinoffs ever, that deviate from Ash's adventures. It would take quite a while just to marathon the ongoing main show on its own, but audiences who do that are far from finished. Luckily, they then have the whole world of spinoffs to check out.

Netflix's live-action Pokémon show has the opportunity to reimagine the franchise and do something it's never done before. The show can potentially crossover with the Detective Pikachu movies, as they could both exist within the same Pokémon canon. The introduction of a live-action Pokémon show can provide a fresh perspective and new direction for the long-running franchise.
Netflix's upcoming live-action Pokémon show will mean reimagining the franchise's format again, but it could lead to something it's never done before. While there have been various shows under the name of the Pokémon franchise over the years, the majority have all shared the same canon. Those that diverged from the main continuity have been reworked versions of the original games, like Pokémon Origins, and standalone projects such as Pokémon Concierge. Pokémon is next to join the long list of Netflix live-action anime adaptations, and it has the chance to push the envelope once again.

Pokémon Horizons marks the first time in 25 that the Pokémon anime focuses on a protagonist other than Ash Ketchum, reinvigorating the franchise. The new series is more story-driven and has a mystery at its core, driving the plot forward and adding a compelling element that Ash's carefree adventures lacked. Liko and Roy, the new heroes of Pokémon Horizons, have traits that make them likable and relatable, and their dynamic adds depth to the series. The extended cast of adult characters also brings a fresh dimension to the story.
The new series Pokémon Horizons marks the first time in the show's 25-year history that it has focused on a protagonist other than Ash Ketchum, and while it was hard to say goodbye to one of anime's most iconic characters, the new direction taken by the franchise has reinvigorated the anime in a way that fans had been waiting for a long time.

As anime's popularity has increased worldwide, content creators have moved to tap into its commercial success by expanding the stories' original boundaries through spinoffs focused on characters or issues that initially were not contemplated as being very interesting, but later captured the hearts and minds of the fan base.
Naturally, lacking the initial influence and attractiveness of the original anime, as well as the critical eye of the fan base that has become experts in the style, feel, and history of its predecessor, it's not easy for a spinoff to advance out of the original series' shadow. However, that doesn't mean that this is an impossible feat. Here are ten great anime spinoffs that managed to do that.

Red, the beloved protagonist from the Pokémon mainline games, should take up the mantle as the new focus in a separate anime series. Pokémon Origins, a four-episode anime Ova, showcased Red as a protagonist and left fans wanting more of his story. Red is the most iconic protagonist in the mainline Pokémon games and has a solid foundation to lead his own anime story.
The Pokémon anime is a legacy series for the overall franchise with Ash as its face. However, with the beloved and perpetual 10-year-old boy's finally coming to a close next month on Netflix, the video games' Red should take up the mantle. While the latest series of the mainline anime, Pokémon Horizons: The Series, has already premiered with Liko and Roy as its latest protagonists, there are still ways for Red to get his share of the limelight.

Back in 1999, Pokémon Red and Blue were at the centre of a genuine craze. In playgrounds, all you’d hear was discussion of the best starter, link cable Pokémon battles and gossip over the mysterious MissingNo. Cut to 2019 and the children of those 90s kids are talking as excitedly about Fortnite. So, it’s a nice bit of symmetry that FiveWalnut8586 has done an extremely impressive job of recreating Pokémon Red in Fortnite’s Creation Mode.

For years and years, the ultimate form a Pokémon could achieve would be its third stage. Not only were these the most desirable and powerful states that your favorites could reach, but they were often the coolest, like turning your lizard into a fire-breathing dragon or your lowly turtle into an artillery-wielding doom machine.
This tradition was started with the original games in the franchise, and held fast for five generations, but was swiftly ended with Pokémon X and Y of Generation VI.
There, the concept of “Mega Evolution” was born. Using a Mega Stone and Key Stone, Trainers could force their Pokémon into a mutated evolution that, although temporary, was incredibly powerful.
At first glance, the transformation lasting for only a single battle at a time seems like a waste, but Nintendo geared these metamorphoses towards being game-breakers, which made the apparent drawbacks of limited availability be quickly forgotten.
