Karen Gillan, much like the rest of us, is still trying to find her own work-life balance.
The 37-year-old actress turned filmmaker has been working consistently for the last decade and a half in major franchises like Doctor Who, the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Jumanji, while also finding time to tackle a slew of other projects. The new mother says she’s practicing the art of taking breaks.
“Not working for the sake of working is probably part of my self-care regime,” Gillan tells The Hollywood Reporter on a Zoom call ahead of the release of her latest project, The Life of Chuck. The fantastical film, a reunion for Gillan, hails from director Mike Flanagan and is based on the Stephen King novella of the same name.
Gillan’s next project is shaping up to be another collaboration with Flanagan that will find her in the director’s chair, the performer explains.

The world of cinema is both remarkably expansive and amusingly small all at once. To wit: While there are new and unique filmmakers emerging onto the scene with each passing year, the way that the business of show has operated since its inception has been to lure audiences into a new film by way of familiar faces. In some cases, movie stars are intentionally interested in working with each other over and over. However, in other cases, the stars of one film will find themselves sharing the screen with an old castmate of theirs. This might be because a film's casting director liked the way two (or more) people looked on screen together before ... or it might be total happenstance.
Whatever the case was when it came to the casting of Nick Frost and Peter Serafinowicz in the live-action remake of "How to Train Your Dragon," it just so happens...

It's a brave new age for Doctor Who, and the beloved sci-fi is series already in spinoff territiory. There's a live-action spinoff called The War Between the Land and the Sea on the way, and now the BBC has revealed a new, animated series aimed at children.
This wouldn't be the first time that there's been a Doctor Who spinoff aimed specifically at much younger audiences. Fans may remember The Sarah Jane Adventures, which began in 2007 and ran for five seasons. While it heavily focused on appealing to juvenile audiences, it also attracted fans of the main series. The show still maintains a cult status within the fandom.
The new animated Doctor Who show will run on the BBC's children's channel CBeebies. The series would run independently of the main show. In a statement at the BBC, Patricia Hidalgo, Director of Children’s and Education, said:

Deep Cover Review: Bryce Dallas Howard and Orlando Bloom improvise a surprisingly good action-comedy
Plot: Kat, an improv comedy teacher, is questioning if she’s missed her shot at success. When an undercover cop offers her the role of a lifetime, she recruits two of her students to infiltrate London’s gangland by impersonating dangerous criminals.
Review: Count me as surprised, but Deep Cover is very funny. With the trailer dropping just a month ago, the Prime Video exclusive debuted on the streaming service today. Starring a pretty solid cast including Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom, and Ted Lasso’s Nick Mohammed, Deep Cover looked like the type of forgettable vehicle that often gets relegated to a digital premiere these days. Nevertheless, the film, co-written by Jurassic World‘s Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly, is a hilarious comedy full of violence, profanity, and engaging characters. Clocking in at just over ninety minutes, Deep Cover is counterprogramming used to complement summer box office tentpoles. Luckily,...

The live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon is now soaring in theaters, and one original cast member from the animated movies did not appear. David Tennant, known primarily for his works on Doctor Who and Jessica Jones, failed to reprise his role as Spitelout Jorgenson. Instead, they cast Peter Serafinowicz.
This project was announced in 2023 with Dean DeBlois directing, writing, and producing the film after spearheading the animated movies. As much as he wanted to bring in all of the original voice actors into the remake, many of them did not physically match their characters.

Many fans were anticipating David Tennant’s appearance in the new How to Train Your Dragon live-action movie, but director Dean DeBlois explained via The Hollywood Reporter why the Scottish actor couldn’t reprise his role.

Much has been said about Doctor Who's future in recent weeks, but it's looking increasingly likely that Disney won't be stepping back into the Tardis. The House of Mouse's partnership with the BBC was meant to make the sci-fi series mainstream; instead, ratings have continued to decline, and reviews for the latest revival were mixed.
Showrunner Russell T Davies' return to Doctor Who ultimately wasn't the win that most fans expected. Ncuti Gatwa has left the show after two seasons, and season 3 still hasn't been announced, despite a cliffhanger ending that saw the Time Lord regenerate into Billie Piper.
According to a reliable source for Doctor Who leaks (via SFFGazette.com), the BBC is currently in advanced talks with a potential new partner following the collapse of the Disney+ deal. It's said that this unnamed partner wants greater creative control and for the series to "take itself more seriously.

Doctor Who is about to get a whole new vibe, animated, bold, and brilliantly unexpected. And guess who’s helping kickstart this wild new chapter? None other than Billie Piper. Rose Tyler is back in the mix, and her voice is leading the charge in the Season 15 finale that’s flipping the switch on Doctor Who’s future.
With animation now officially part of the canon, the show’s opening the Tardis doors to infinite storytelling possibilities, no regeneration limits, no budget constraints, just pure Time Lord chaos. And if this finale’s any indication, the future of Doctor Who might be drawn, but it’s far from predictable.

Take your fish sticks out of the fryer and whip up a bowl of custard because the Whoniverse is expanding as the BBC announces another Doctor Who spin-off! Amidst speculation about Doctor Who’s cancellation after the latest season of the timeless BBC TV series underperformed, the BBC says it’s moving forward with a preschool-style animated Doctor Who series. The untitled show finds the Doctor traveling through time, solving mysteries and problems alongside their companions and other friends. The show will run on the BBC’s pre-school channel CBeebies.
According to reports, the BBC is searching for a “passionate production company” to produce a project that does not conflict with the core show’s events or storylines. More interestingly, Disney, which co-produces the Bad Wolf and BBC Studios-produced main version with showrunner Russell T. Davies, will not be involved with the animation.

As the days continue to pass since its controversial Season 2 finale, it seems increasingly likely that the lackluster Disney era of Doctor Who is going to end with a whimper. Russell T. Davies' second era at the helm has found itself in the middle of a storm of speculative rumors, as the future of the timey-wimey series remains in doubt. However, the latest news from the BBC instead points to the likelihood that Doctor Who's "Whoniverse" will continue to expand at pace, although Disney are likely to get booted out of the Tardis for good.

One of the great traits about The Doctor is that he's always been an animated character who likes to express himself through over-the-top verbal and physical mannerisms. Now, the BBC is taking that literal by turning him into an actual animated persona for a new Doctor Who kids show that's set to air on the pre-school channel, CBeebies. This won't be the first time The Doctor gets the animation treatment, but it will be the first full-fledged animated series for kids in the franchise's long history.
Per Deadline, the BBC is now on the hunt for a production company to produce the animated series, as Disney – who co-produces the flagship show – won't be involved this time around. It will be aimed at pre-school kids and feature The Doctor "solving mysteries and problems alongside their companions and other friends." Plenty of controversy has surrounded Doctor Who Season 2, so much so that the timey-wimey series' future is seemingly up in the air. With a frustrating finale providing the pinpoint in a lackluster Disney era for the show, many have even suggested that, much like Ncuti Gatwa, Russell T. Davies' time in charge of Doctor Who should come to an end, with some even suggesting the series deserves canning altogether.
One of the headline indicators for those in the latter camp of Doctor Who's failing appeal has been the viewing figures, with episodes this season dropping lower than ever before. The debate, like the Time War, has raged on, with defenders citing mitigating circumstances such as the rise in streaming and a poorly timed release window. Now, thanks to the official 7-day viewing figures for the finale episode cited via Barb, it seems those arguing for mitigating circumstances may have...

The Forsytes hasn't even premiered and good news about Season 2 is already coming our way. Today, Masterpiece on PBS announced that the cast of the next season of the period drama series is expanding. Richard Rankin (Outlander) is one of the new names that will integrate the cast of the upcoming episodes, which are currently filming in the U.K. Season 1 is expected to premiere on Masterpiece on PBS in March 2026.
The addition only underscores how PBS is confident in the story of The Forsytes. The renewal for Season 2 was announced three months ago, way before Season 1 premiered. Rankin plays fan-favorite Roger in Outlander and has also been in the cast of other high-profile series such as The Last Kingdom and Rebus. The recent season 2 finale of Doctor Who ended with an absolute bombshell as Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor regenerated into none other than Billie Piper, who previously played fan-favorite Rose Tyler, the first companion of the 'New Who' era.
In the weeks leading up to the finale, fans had theorized that a regeneration was coming. Both Disney and the BBC were heavily promoting an epic finale, going as far as aligning the premiere times so fans around the world could watch it simultaneously. In addition, a number of UK cinemas held special screenings for the episode. The finale itself, titled "The Reality War," ended up being just okay. It had great moments, but was largely let down by messy pacing and underwhelming character arcs for companions Ruby Sunday and Belinda Chandra.

Matt Smith debuted as the Eleventh Doctor on Doctor Who back in 2010, when the long-running sci-fi show was near the height of its modern popularity and influence. He stuck around for three years, the standard time for an actor to stick with the role, before he moved onto other projects. While the Doctor has continued regenerating into new actors, Smith has gone on to play high-profile roles in shows like The Crown and House of the Dragon...and also appear in movies like Morbius, but we can probably ignore that.
Anyway, it's been a while since Smith was piloting the Tardis, but he's always spoken well of the show and the people he worked with. During his tenure, Steven Moffat was serving as showrunner on Doctor Who. Per Radio Times, Moffat appeared on an episode of the Doctor Who documentary series Doctor Who: Unleashed, where he looked back on the show that was.

Marvel Cinematic Universe icon Mark Ruffalo is set to star alongside Doctor Who actress Ruth Madeley in a new movie for Apple Original Films. Siân Heder, the director of Oscar winner Coda, is also attached to the film titled Being Heumann.
According to Deadline, the movie tells the story of Judy Heumann, a disability rights activist who led a 28-day sit-in at the San Francisco Federal Building in 1977. She and her fellow protesters demanded that the government make all federal buildings accessible to disabled people -- a fight that was a long time coming and hard-won. The film is named after and based on Heumann's memoir, published in 2010.
Ruffalo will play Joseph Califano, who was the Secretary of Health, Education, and Welfare at the time. He held back on signing critical legislation for people with disabilities, and was only persuaded to do so by the actions of Heumann and her...

It's been 12 years since Matt Smith last played the Doctor in the BBC seriesDoctor Who. According to former writer Steven Moffat, while the actor has been involved in huge projects like House of the Dragon, Smith has expressed interest in returning to the Doctor Who set.
RadioTimes reported that Moffat appeared in Doctor Who: Unleashed, where he shared his recent WhatsApp conversation with the former actor he has worked with since 2010. He revealed that after Smith learned it had been 15 years since his first appearance, the actor replied that he wished he was on the Doctor Who set. This is when the former showrunner "begged" him to return.
"Today, as I sit here, is the 15th anniversary of when the 11th Doctor fell to Earth and ate fish custard. I WhatsApp'd Matt this morning saying it was 15 years, and he said, 'I wish I was on that set now'.

Following its unexpected Season 2 conclusion, the future of Doctor Who is once again in as much peril as The Doctor finds himself in across a regular season of the sci-fi show. After the show was “saved” by Disney, who delivered a hefty cash injection that seemed to be spent on mostly unnecessary CGI graphics, the deal with the Mouse House is now done, and it doesn’t look like they intend to regenerate their investment after the series failed to gain the kind of success they were expecting.
According to a new report from Daniel Richtman, Disney is not planning on giving another investment to the show, thus concluding their two-season contract. This seems to be the reason the second season ended the way it did, and why there has been no Christmas special or new season announcement. However, according to Richtman, this does not mean the show is about...

One of the next big remakes Disney still has in the works is Hercules. The project was first announced in 2020 and had a lot of buzz at the time. It started with Dave Callaham, who worked on Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, writing the script.
The Russo Brothers, known for their work on the Avengers movies, came on to produce it. Eventually, Guy Ritchie joined the team as director and helped update the script.
Even though the movie is still in development, there hasn’t been much news about it for a while. Now, a report from insider Daniel Richtman might explain why things have been so quiet. According to Richtman, there have been “creative tensions” behind the scenes.
The conflict seems to come down to different visions for the story. The Russo Brothers apparently want to make Hades the main character, focusing the film around him.

13 Reasons Why – Clay(Photo Credit –YouTube)
I didn’t expect a teen drama to hit me square in the chest. But then 13 Reasons Why happened, and Clay Jensen (played by Dylan Minnette), with all his unraveling and inner chaos, felt like someone had opened my brain and projected it onto a Netflix screen.
From the first season, the show was wrapped in controversy. Suicide, bullying, trauma—it dove headfirst into tough conversations that most high school dramas danced around. But for me, it wasn’t the plot twists or shocking tapes that stuck. It was Clay, a seemingly quiet, thoughtful kid, who slowly cracked under the weight of guilt, fear, and unanswered questions. His mental health arc felt uncomfortably close to home.

When the BBC teamed up with Disney+ to co-produce Doctor Who, the future looked bright for the long-running sci-fi series. Coming off the back of Chris Chibnall's divisive run as showrunner, which saw Jodie Whittaker step into the Tardis, a cash injection to give it a big budget feel felt like the right move for a property running on fumes.
Helping matters would be a new streaming home capable of bringing Doctor Who to a global audience. The return of Russell T Davies as lead creative (he rebooted the show in the mid-2000s to great success) was similarly celebrated.
Unfortunately, the series has struggled to strike a chord with new and returning fans. Davies has been accused of being too heavy-handed with "woke" themes, and newly introduced concepts like "Bi-generation" have frustrated the die-hards.

Here’s How Billie Piper Can Change The Future Of Doctor Who For Better Or Worse ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Billie Piper returning to Doctor Who, not as Rose Tyler, not as a memory, not as The Moment, but potentially as the actual Doctor? That regeneration twist at the end of The Reality War wasn’t just bold. It was canon-shaking, fandom-dividing, and frankly, emotionally confusing. Ncuti Gatwa’s 15th Doctor barely had time to breathe before the baton was passed, and Piper’s face emerged from the glow. Shocking? Yes. Exciting? Maybe. But was it necessary? That’s the debate now tearing through Whovian circles.
For longtime fans, this is a dream. Piper’s impact on the series is undeniable. She helped relaunch the show in 2005, shaped its emotional core, and held her own alongside Eccleston and Tennant. Even in 2013’s The Day of the Doctor, she delivered a performance that carried weight and nostalgia.

Two decades after joining the world of Doctor Who, Billie Piper made her grand return in the final episode of Ncuti Gatwa's run. The Fifteenth Doctor went through a regeneration before taking on the likeness of Piper, who played the fan-favorite companion Rose Tyler.
Piper commented on her return in the Doctor Who Unleashed 20th anniversary of the Doctor Who revival that introduced Rose Tyler alongside Christopher Eccleston's Ninth Doctor. She explained how she's always felt like she's been a part of the Doctor Who family, even after her exit as one of the show's starring cast members. She also commented on how "fun" it is to revisit Doctor Who, reaffirming that it doesn't feel like as much of a "return" from her point of view.

Two years after Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 seemingly brought her story to its end, actress Karen Gillan opened up about whether audiences can expect to see her return as Nebula. Though she was introduced as Thanos' adoptive daughter and lackey, she underwent a nearly decade-long redemption arc that made her a favorite among Marvel Cinematic Universe fans. However, the character's future seems up in the air following her fairly conclusive storyline in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Nebula has found a new family among the Guardians, and she's managed to smile again after years of abuse.
As a result, it's hard to imagine where a new story could take her, especially because she was not shown with Rocket Raccoon's new Guardians at the end of the trilogy. Additionally, Gillan is not on the cast list for Avengers: Doomsday. Recently, the actress revealed whether or not she...

As showrunner, Russell T. Davies, has proven beyond any doubt in the latest fan-service-heavy season that Doctor Who has a rich history that its current regime would love us to look back on. In doing so, fans often look to Davies' first era at the helm, particularly the opening 2005 revival season that saw Ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston tackle all manner of terrifying villains alongside Billie Piper's Rose Tyler – from the politically satirical Slitheen to the chilling Empty Child and eventually the iconic Daleks.
However, according to Radio Times, the Daleks were almost entirely different in the modern revival, with their fear factor best illustrated in their opening episode, "Dalek," nearly completely eradicated. The episode's writer, Robert Shearman, has spilled on the process of reviving the iconic killing machines, admitting "I didn't know what I was doing," at a recent event held at the BFI Southbank, in partnership with the Doctor Who Appreciation Society.

We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, we’re lobbing queries left and right about Doctor Who, The Cleaning Lady, Law & Order: Organized Crime and more!
1 | Given that David Tennant is still playing a Doctor in the Whoniverse, what are the odds that — in any potential new season of Doctor Who — Fourteen will cross paths with whomever/whatever Tennant’s former on-screen companion, Billie Piper, is now playing?

In a rather surprising turn of events, the season finale of Doctor Who ended with Ncuti Gatwa's Fifteenth Doctor regenerating. This regeneration means that Gatwa is among the actors who's played the Doctor for the shortest amount of time in the modern era, in front of only Christopher Eccleston, who played the Doctor for a single season back in 2005.
Fans had expected Gatwa's Doctor to stick around for at least one more season. From David Tennant's Tenth Doctor to Matt Smith Eleventh to Peter Capaldi's Twelvth to Jodie Whittaker's Thirteenth, it's become customary in the 'New Who' era for Doctors to stick around for three seasons at a time before regenerating.
But for Gatwa, ending his journey as the Doctor after only two seasons didn't come as a shock. “It was always the plan to do this amount of seasons,” he said in a behind-the-scenes video.

For a show centered around geeks, it only made sense that the main crew would gush about pop culture in The Big Bang Theory, especially when it comes to Sheldon and Amy. Like Jim Parsons’ Sheldon, who was obsessed with pop culture, primarily Doctor Who and Star Trek, Amy was a nerd about Little House on the Prairie.
Interestingly, Linwood Boomer, one of the stars from the show, was responsible for penning and creating one of the most iconic sitcoms of the 2000s, which debuted before Tbbt.

While not exactly historically accurate, like Sheldon points out during his date with Amy on a Skype call, potentially in an attempt to get back at her for ruining Raiders of the Lost Ark, Little House on the Prairie remains iconic.

Varada Sethu has had an incredible ride on Doctor Who. She appeared in the Season 1 episode "Boom" as Mundy Flynn, and showrunner Russell T. Davies liked her so much that he decided to bring Sethu back as new companion Belinda Chandra. However, audiences had no idea that Belinda's run would be short-lived.
Sethu appeared as Belinda in just one full season before being written out in the Season 2 finale "The Reality War." Ncuti Gatwa has also left the show, Billie Piper is seemingly the new Doctor, and the series's future is up in the air. But Sethu has no regrets; she was full of praise for the show in a new Instagram post.
"Wow wow wow wow wow. I’m sooo late to the party (as always), but needed to take a few days to process this show, this finale and everything & everyone it has brought into my life,...
