Mubi has received fresh push back over a recent $100 million investment it received from Silicon Valley-based private equity firm Sequoia Capital, over the latter’s backing of a number of Israeli defence-tech start-ups.

Filmmakers with connections to Mubi – including Nate Fisher, Sarah Friedland, Cherien Dabis, Tyler Taormina, Aki Kaurismäki, Radu Jude and Joshua Oppenheimer – have signed a letter calling on the arthouse distributor and streamer to reconsider its relationship with the investment firm.

The signatories do not include the directors of Mubi’s recent high-profile Cannes acquisitions such as Lynne Ramsay, Mascha Schilinski (Sound of Falling), Oliver Hermanus (The History of Sound) and Kelly Reichardt (The Mastermind) and Akinola Davies Jr. (My Father’s Shadow).

BTS’ Label Hybe To Launch A New Boy Band In August 2025 ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

Since the beginning of the year, rumours have been circulating that BTS’s parent label, Hybe, is preparing to debut a new boy group. While the label has kept mum about the same, fans continue to speculate about the group members, what they look like, and who they could be. Several media outlets in South Korea have also mentioned that a new boy group is likely to debut soon from Hybe. This debut, once confirmed, will be the first boy group in five years since Tomorrow X Together (Txt). BTS, Txt, and soloist Lee Hyun are signed under BigHit Music, a subsidiary of Hybe Labels.

Since Hybe took over Pledis and BigHit, it has expanded and solidified its presence in Japan and in the US, with an aim to bring music and content across regions on a global platform.

Mubi has responded to online criticism of its investment from Sequoia Capital, the investment firm with connections to Israeli defence technology firm Kela, saying“the beliefs of individual investors do not reflect the views of Mubi”.

Sequoia led a $100m investment in Mubi in May this year, in what marks a rare foray into film and media for the US-based venture capital firm.

With money in companies including Apple, Google, Stripe, Airbnb and ByteDance, Sequoia also invests in defence technology startup Kela, which wasfounded in July 2024 and is developing an operating system to enable militaries to integrate artificial intelligence and commercial technology.

Jim Jarmusch’s comedy drama Father Mother Sister Brother is headed to Venice competition, according to Mubi founder Efe Cakarel.

Cakarel revealed the film was to feature in competition during keynote speech today (June 6) at SXSW London, telling audiences it is “already confirmed”.

Jarmusch’s film, on which Mubi is a producer, is an anthology of three stories starring Cate Blanchett, Adam Driver and Vicky Krieps, which shot last year across the US, France and Ireland. It follows estranged siblings that reunite after years apart. The Match Factory represents sales.

It’s been an eventful few days for Lynne Ramsay's new film. Following its Cannes debut on Saturday, the We Need To Talk About Kevin director’s latest effort was picked up by Mubi for a widely reported $20m, before someone did some more sums and put the price tag at $24m. At the same time, Die, My Love may or may not have lost the comma in its name, turning the whole thing into either a grammatical nightmare or an English-German co-production. Everyone’s spelling it differently, anyway – I showed a review to a copy-editor friend, and she exploded.

Of all the movies playing at the Cannes Film Festival this year, one of the highest profile ones has to be the Lynne Ramsay-directed Die, My Love. Marvel used the same strategy with Sebastian Stan that they used with other actors in their roster. The studio hired relatively unknown actors, paid them cheap compared to industry standards, and they would receive a higher salary down the road if they delivered. According to this strategy, Stan was only paid breadcrumbs when he took on Bucky Barnes in Captain America: The First Avenger.

According to Stan, it was so low that he couldn’t even afford his rent despite starring in a Marvel movie. However, as the Marvel promise goes, Stan was offered multiple projects down the lane. Stan is set to reprise his Winter Soldier role once again for the upcoming film, Thunderbolts*.

Matt Reeves revealed that he wrote The Batman with Robert Pattinson in mind. There were several actors on the shortlist to replace Ben Affleck as the next Dark Knight, including Pattinson, Nicholas Hoult, Armie Hammer, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The Twilight star was Reeves’ choice but he was unsure whether the actor would take on the role.

After the Twilight Saga, Pattinson pretty much avoided franchise films in Hollywood and mostly worked in independent films. It was one such film that got him noticed for the role of Batman. Reeves shared that he was impressed after seeing Pattinson in 2017’s Good Time.

Jennifer Lawrence's new movie with Robert Pattinson, Die, My Love, has been revealed in three first-look images. Directed by Lynne Ramsay, who co-wrote the script with Enda Walsh based on the 2017 novel by Ariana Harwicz, the upcoming film follows the psychological unraveling of a woman living in rural America who becomes overwhelmed by the demands of marriage and motherhood. The movie stars Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson in lead roles alongside Lakeith Stanfield, Oscar winner Sissy Spacek, and three-time Oscar nominee Nick Nolte.

Now, three first-look images from Die, My Love featuring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson have been revealed via The Film Stage. The first image shows a close-up of Lawrence's character drinking from a glass, followed by a second of her at a party with confetti falling around her. The third image shows Lawrence and Pattinson's characters, who are husband and wife, dancing in their farmhouse on the Montana countryside.

Seven years since You Were Never Really Here debuted at Cannes and with many false starts in-between, Lynne Ramsay is finally set to return. The Martin Scorsese-produced Die, My Love began shooting in recent months with Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Pattinson, and Lakeith Stanfield, and today first stills of Lawrence and Pattinson have been revealed.

An adaptation of Ariana Harwicz’s 2019 novel, the film follows a mother who struggles to maintain her sanity as she battles with psychosis in a remote rural area. Co-written by Enda Walsh and shot by Seamus McGarvey, the project (per Ramsay) is “about mental health and the breakdown of a marriage. But it’s really fucking funny. At least I think it’s funny… But I’m Glaswegian, so I’ve [got] a really black sense of humor.”

Exclusive: Veteran documentary filmmaker Lance Oppenheim (Ren Faire) is pivoting to fiction with his next project, Primetime, which will be financed and produced by A24, with Robert Pattinson among the producers.

While not much is known about the film’s genre or plot, it’s said to follow a journalist who takes on an underworld of crime and changes television forever. We’ve heard from multiple sources that the project takes inspiration from To Catch a Predator, the NBC program put on as part of Dateline, as well as its host Chris Hansen, though the studio wouldn’t confirm. Sources also had Pattinson attached to star, though others clarified that there’s no deal in that respect for the moment. Stay tuned.

A new leg of Coldplay’s ongoing Music of the Spheres world tour will reach the North American part of the sphere called Earth next summer. The group, which last week put out an album that paid tribute to another sphere, Moon Music, will play a handful of stadiums around the United States and two dates in Toronto.

Tickets go on sale to the general public at noon local time on Friday. Various presales will begin at 9 a.m. that day for people who sign up early. Full details are on Ticketmaster’s Coldplay hub.

It was 1974, and Paul McCartney had hit new heights of success with his album Band on the Run, widely considered one of his finest works. Though McCartney had long moved past his Beatles days, creating acclaimed music as a solo artist, forming the band Wings in 1971 helped give new energy to his collaborative spirit. Just over a year after Band on the Run’s release, McCartney and Wings found themselves at Abbey Road Studios preparing for their next creative venture.

Abbey Road was where McCartney had made so much musical history. Now, with Wings taking shape around him, including wife Linda on keyboards, Denny Laine on guitar and vocals, and newer members Jimmy McCulloch and Geoff Britton, McCartney saw an opportunity to capture the band’s chemistry on film. He brought in friend David Litchfield to document rehearsals for an envisioned live album and special to be called One Hand Clapping.

Revered Italian auteur Marco Bellocchio is back behind the camera producing and shooting “Portobello,” a TV series reconstructing one of Italy’s most clamorous travesties of justice.

The show marks the first project out of the gate hailing from Our Films, the new shingle headed by prominent producer duo Mario Gianani and Lorenzo Mieli best known for shepherding “The Young Pope” and “My Brilliant Friend.”

The “Portobello” series is lead-produced by Our Films with Bellocchio’s Kavac Film headed by producer Simone Gattoni. It is an Arte France co-production also in collaboration with Fremantle’s The Apartment Pictures. “Portobello” is written by Marco Bellocchio with Stefano Bises (“Gomorrah”), Giordana Mari (“My Love”) and Peppe Fiore (“The King”).

Israeli novelist and director Shemi Zarhin is set to screen his latest movie, Bliss (Hemda) at the Toronto Film Festival with virtually all the certainties in his life and work scrambled by the current war in Gaza that followed the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks on southern Israel.

“I can’t explain my people. I can explain nothing,” Zarhin told The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday about the impossibility of unpacking the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians in his own films and the wider Israeli cinema.

Trafalgar Releasing and Mercury Studios have set a September 26 release for documentary One Hand Clapping, an opportunity for audiences to step back in time to 1974 with Paul McCartney and Wings.

The behind-the-scenes look delves into the making of the acclaimed One Hand Clapping album featuring rare footage, interviews with the band, insights from the creative team, and iconic Wings hits.

“It’s so great to look back on that period and see the little live show we did. We made a pretty good noise actually! It was a great time for the band, we started to have success with Wings, which had been a long time coming, said McCartney, whose exclusive filmed introduction will kick off the screenings along with previously unseen Polaroid photographs from the recording sessions.

The full documentary directed by David Litchfield will include previously unreleased Backyard Sessions, showcasing McCartney on acoustic guitar performing beloved tracks from his catalog.

Half a century after Paul McCartney and Wings took a studio vacation at Abbey Road to film their Band on the Run tour rehearsals, that picture, One Hand Clapping, is finally getting a wide release.
