Filmmakers Step Up Pressure On Mubi Over Investment From Israeli Defence Start-Up Backer Sequoia Capital
Image
Mubi has received fresh push back over a recent $100 million investment it received from Silicon Valley-based private equity firm Sequoia Capital, over the latter’s backing of a number of Israeli defence-tech start-ups.

Filmmakers with connections to Mubi – including Nate Fisher, Sarah Friedland, Cherien Dabis, Tyler Taormina, Aki Kaurismäki, Radu Jude and Joshua Oppenheimer – have signed a letter calling on the arthouse distributor and streamer to reconsider its relationship with the investment firm.

The signatories do not include the directors of Mubi’s recent high-profile Cannes acquisitions such as Lynne Ramsay, Mascha Schilinski (Sound of Falling), Oliver Hermanus (The History of Sound) and Kelly Reichardt (The Mastermind) and Akinola Davies Jr. (My Father’s Shadow).

In the statement, first reported by Variety, the filmmakers highlighted Sequoia Capital’s growing investments in Israeli military technology companies.

It cited Kela Technologies, which was founded in the wake of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Southern Israel,...

From tariffs to trees, there was plenty to talk about at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Screen gathers together the major discussion points from this year’s event, which concludes tomorrow (May 24) with the Palme d’Or prize-giving ceremony.

Mubi’s moment

One company has dominated the Cannes Competition deals so far. Of the 21 deals for Competition films across North America and UK-Ireland, 10 have gone to Mubi. These include films on which it holds both territories, such as Lynne Ramsay’s Die, My Love, for which the company paid a huge $24m at the weekend; to those where it...

Andor Star's New Movie Just Had Cannes' Best Reception In 19 Years
Image
The Cannes Film Festival is still in full swing, and like always, it has been home to some impressive films. One of the longest-running film festivals around, the massive artistic event can be traced back to 1946. This year, the festival kicked off on Thursday, May 13, and runs through this Saturday, May 24. This year's lineup included Lynne Ramsey's Die, My Love, and Spike Lee's (out of competition) Highest 2 Lowest, among other notable titles. Continuing the festival's audience tradition, Cannes 2025 has had its fair share of long-standing ovations.

One of the festival's anticipated films features a leading performance from Stellan Skarsgård. The patriarch of the Skarsgård family, the actor is known for his roles in movies like Good Will Hunting and Amistad. More recently, he has made a splash in multiple high-caliber sci-fi projects, including Luthen Rael in Andor and Baron Harkonnen in Dune: Part Two. Now, Skarsgård's latest film has...

'Die, My Love' Director Says Critics Have Gotten the Robert Pattinson & Jennifer Lawrence Movie All Wrong
Image
Lynne Ramsay, the director of films like We Need to Talk About Kevin and You Were Never Really Here, knows that her films tend to be deeper than the conventional Hollywood movie. She also isn't afraid to call out those who misunderstand her work. Her latest film, the psychological thriller Die, My Love, is dividing audiences at the Cannes Film Festival, and early reviews have convinced Ramsay to speak her mind. She says that the film starring Robert Pattinson and Jennifer Lawrence is being greatly misinterpreted by critics.

Mubi has acquiredDie, My Love for $24 million at Cannes in one of the festival's most interesting deals so far. Their listing of the film already includes the following plot synopsis: "Grace, a writer and young mother, is slowly slipping into madness. Locked away in an old house in and around Montana, we see her acting increasingly agitated and erratic, leaving her companion,...

Lynne Ramsay queries Die, My Love responses: ‘This postpartum thing is just bulls***t’
Image
The You Were Never Really Here filmmaker has little time for one critical reading of her new film, Die, My Love. More below.

It’s been an eventful few days for Lynne Ramsay's new film. Following its Cannes debut on Saturday, the We Need To Talk About Kevin director’s latest effort was picked up by Mubi for a widely reported $20m, before someone did some more sums and put the price tag at $24m. At the same time, Die, My Love may or may not have lost the comma in its name, turning the whole thing into either a grammatical nightmare or an English-German co-production. Everyone’s spelling it differently, anyway – I showed a review to a copy-editor friend, and she exploded.

Starring Jennifer Lawrence (also producing) alongside Robert Pattinson, Lakeith Stanfield and Sissy Spacek, the film charts a woman’s mental struggles following the birth of her new son.

Die, My Love: Jennifer Lawrence & Robert Pattinson movie acquired by Mubi for $24 million
Lynne Ramsay
Of all the movies playing at the Cannes Film Festival this year, one of the highest profile ones has to be the Lynne Ramsay-directed Die, My Love. Not only does it mark the gifted Ramsay’s return to directing after eight years, but it also marks Jennifer Lawrence’s first film in two years. Lawrence’s last movie, No Hard Feelings, was an underrated comedy, but in this one, the actress plays a much darker role, with the movie centring around a woman who plunges into psychosis after she gives birth. Robert Pattinson co-stars as her husband, and the film has already been drawing wild reviews out of Cannes for its controversial subject matter, with the movie even apparently containing a scene where a dog meets a rather grisly fate at the hands of its star.

With the movie already generating awards buzz for Lawrence’s performance, it’s been acquired by Mubi,...

‘My Love Story’ Is the Perfect Starter Anime for Shonen Fans Wanting to Try Their Hands at Shojo
Image
Let’s talk about shojo anime tropes for size. An entire season is dedicated to two people realizing their love for each other. Or love rivals? Maybe school festival drama? And we can’t forget the popular boy x shy girl when listing the cliche tropes that most shojo anime are riddled with.

However, My Love Story steers clear of all of them. Most of these tropes have their own appeal, but too much drama can be quite repulsive, especially when you’re picking an anime for the heart-throbbing romance.

For that reason and more, Ore Monogatari or My Love Story is the perfect starter anime for anyone who has been wanting to try shojo anime. However, can an anime that doesn’t indulge in classic shonen tropes really be a good introduction to the category? Yes, it can! It preserves the shojo essence in its own way and brilliantly so.

Image
Robert Pattinson set to feature in Dune 3? ( Photo Credit – Flickr )

A few days back, there were reports that Robert Pattinson had shared his desire to play a role in Dune’s sequel. Now, media outlets are suggesting that there might be a chance that Pattinson can get into the world of Dune. From heading Gotham City as Batman to leading Arrakis, it is going to be a tremendous journey. Based on recent reports, the Batman actor has been eyed for a villainous role in Dune 3.

For the unversed, Denis Villeneuve’s directorial sci-fi movie franchise Dune and Dune 2 featured a bunch of great actors, including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, and others. Now, Dune 3 will introduce more characters, and that might just open up the chance for Pattinson to play an essential role in the sequel.

As per Variety, Robert Pattinson has been offered...

Dr. Moreau’s House of Pain Noir has been released by Full Moon
Image
Last year, Charles Band’s company Full Moon announced that they were launching a new production label called Pulp Noir, which would focus on “edgier, weirder, darker horror and dark fantasy films.” Two Pulp Noir movies, Quadrant and Death Streamer, have since made their way through production – and while those movies were initially released in color, all of the Pulp Noir movies will also get black & white “noir” releases, so there are both color and black & white versions of Quadrant and Death Streamer available on the Full Moon Features streaming service. While we wait for more Pulp Noir movies to be made, Band has started going through the Full Moon library to give some of their older films the black & white / noir treatment. This noir series, which is expected to consist of at least a dozen films, got started with a black & white version of the 1984 sci-fi thriller Christmas classic Trancers.

“I Did Not Do This”: Kim Soo-hyun Rejects Allegations Tied to Late Co-Star’s Death
Kim Soo-hyun in Saikojiman Gwaenchanha (2020)
South Korean actor Kim Soo-hyun tearfully denied claims of dating the late actress Kim Sae-ron while she was a minor during a press conference in Seoul on Monday, calling the accusations “fabricated” and vowing to fight legal battles to clear his name.

The 37-year-old star, known for global hits like Queen of Tears and My Love from the Star, addressed explosive allegations linking him to Kim Sae-ron’s 2024 suicide and claims of financial pressure against her prior to her death.

Kim Sae-ron, who rose to fame as a child actress in films like A Brand New Life (2009), died by suicide on February 16 at age 24—a date coinciding with Kim Soo-hyun’s birthday. Her family alleges the actor began a six-year relationship with her in 2016, when she was 15 and he was 27, and claims his agency pressured her to repay debts tied to a 2022 drunk-driving incident that derailed her career.

“Our relationship lasted only one year,...

Marvel Paid So Less to Sebastian Stan for Captain America That He Didn’t Have Enough Money to Pay His Rent
Image
Marvel used the same strategy with Sebastian Stan that they used with other actors in their roster. The studio hired relatively unknown actors, paid them cheap compared to industry standards, and they would receive a higher salary down the road if they delivered. According to this strategy, Stan was only paid breadcrumbs when he took on Bucky Barnes in Captain America: The First Avenger.

According to Stan, it was so low that he couldn’t even afford his rent despite starring in a Marvel movie. However, as the Marvel promise goes, Stan was offered multiple projects down the lane. Stan is set to reprise his Winter Soldier role once again for the upcoming film, Thunderbolts*.

First Look at Lynne Ramsay’s Die, My Love Featuring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson
Image
Seven years since You Were Never Really Here debuted at Cannes and with many false starts in-between, Lynne Ramsay is finally set to return. The Martin Scorsese-produced Die, My Love began shooting in recent months with Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Pattinson, and Lakeith Stanfield, and today first stills of Lawrence and Pattinson have been revealed.

An adaptation of Ariana Harwicz’s 2019 novel, the film follows a mother who struggles to maintain her sanity as she battles with psychosis in a remote rural area. Co-written by Enda Walsh and shot by Seamus McGarvey, the project (per Ramsay) is “about mental health and the breakdown of a marriage. But it’s really fucking funny. At least I think it’s funny… But I’m Glaswegian, so I’ve [got] a really black sense of humor.”

One Hand Clapping Review: Backstage Pass to the Magic of Wings’ Rise
Image
It was 1974, and Paul McCartney had hit new heights of success with his album Band on the Run, widely considered one of his finest works. Though McCartney had long moved past his Beatles days, creating acclaimed music as a solo artist, forming the band Wings in 1971 helped give new energy to his collaborative spirit. Just over a year after Band on the Run’s release, McCartney and Wings found themselves at Abbey Road Studios preparing for their next creative venture.

Abbey Road was where McCartney had made so much musical history. Now, with Wings taking shape around him, including wife Linda on keyboards, Denny Laine on guitar and vocals, and newer members Jimmy McCulloch and Geoff Britton, McCartney saw an opportunity to capture the band’s chemistry on film. He brought in friend David Litchfield to document rehearsals for an envisioned live album and special to be called One Hand Clapping.

‘Bliss (Hemda)’ Director Talks Israeli Film Backlash by Major Festivals: “They Don’t Want Us Anymore”
Image
Israeli novelist and director Shemi Zarhin is set to screen his latest movie, Bliss (Hemda) at the Toronto Film Festival with virtually all the certainties in his life and work scrambled by the current war in Gaza that followed the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks on southern Israel.

“I can’t explain my people. I can explain nothing,” Zarhin told The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday about the impossibility of unpacking the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians in his own films and the wider Israeli cinema.

Hardly a critique of Israeli’s polarized society, Zarhin wrote and shot Bliss (Hemda) before the Israeli-Gaza war broke out late last year with devastating destruction in the region, and it’s not an overtly political film as it centers on an older couple, Sassi and Efi, played by Sasson Gabay and Assi Levy.

Burdened by part time jobs, they struggle with the everyday complications and cares of family,...

The Young and the Restless spoilers for Friday, August 9, prove that Victor is always available to help out another family member — whether they ask for it or not.

To Remind You of My Love

Has he missed anyone? Ah, yes — Summer (Allison Lanier).

Victor’s precious granddaughter has not been the lucky receiver of Grandpa’s counsel in a while! She’s having some trouble with custody of Harrison (Redding Munsall — who recently channeled Victor). Victor can help with that! In a way that doesn’t affect Victor’s side deal with Kyle (Michael Mealor). Victor is, of course, very concerned with the young boy’s future. And with Summer’s happiness.
