Many of the musical performances were recorded live on set, with the cast members performing alongside blues musicians.
Director Ryan Coogler was asked about whether he considered a potential sequel. Although it was an idea that he never thought about, the director elaborated on how he wanted to work on something original after having done many franchise projects. He then explained that his intention for the film was to "feel like a full meal" and would be a "finished thing." "I never think about that. I've been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that. I was looking forward to working on a film that felt original and personal to me and had an appetite for delivering something to audiences that was original and unique. I wanted the movie to feel like a full meal: your appetizers, starters, entrees and desserts, I wanted all of it there. I wanted it to be a holistic and finished thing. That was how I was asked all about it. That was always my intention."
Director Ryan Coogler was impressed by Miles Caton's audition tape from the very beginning. "He was just in the dark--like he didn't turn his lights on," Coogler said. "Something about that was, like, so intriguing. This kid looked like he was in his basement, like in between homework assignments. But he had this voice--a once-in-a-lifetime voice."
It's particularly significant that Remmick is introduced fleeing from Choctaw hunters. Not only is the movie set in the historic Choctaw homeland, there is a long history of cooperation between the Choctaw (and Native America more broadly) and the Irish. The Irish Potato Famine occurred sixteen years after the Choctaw, Cherokee, Muscogee, Seminole, and Chickasaw peoples were forced to walk the Trail of Tears. Knowing tragedy and hunger themselves, Choctaw and Cherokee survivors donated hundreds of dollars to support famine relief. In 2017, Ireland erected the Kindred Spirits sculpture in acknowledgment of friendship between the two peoples, with a companion sculpture called Eternal Heart installed on Choctaw land in 2024. When the Coronavirus Pandemic began in 2020 and the Navajo and Hopi nations were hit especially hard, Ireland sent a two million dollar donation, accrediting it to Choctaw kindness in their time of need.
