A good movie (for Vietnamese)

The move has been hated by many Vietnamese who never watch it. The hate is from the boycott towards the director.

For me, I care about the movie, not the director's private life. I'm not his fan or anti-fan.

The movie worthed its cents. Good plot twists, great acting, informal dialogues, good scenes. However, the story is simple, opera soap like.

I rarely have chances to watch Vietnamese movies which are this good. I would say for every 10 Vietnamese movies, only 1 movie acquire this (or higher) quality.

Unfortunately, too many people rejected its value without watching the movie once.

Just my two cents.

A top movie unfairly treated

I am being generous here, I think the movie sits somewhere between 7 and 8/10

To foreign friends who do not have the background: the director of this movie used to be an MC and comedian and he worked really hard to rise to the top face in Viet's show biz. Despite many past and ongoing controversies, what cannot be denied is his talents and hard work.

The movie starts with a intertwining scence where the Mai mopping her apt floor and her neighbor banging girls. I think it's a pretty good funny scene and a good sign of a quality movie.

Sure the dialogue is not as natural as you see foreign movies but it's a common problem with Vietnamese. We have.

Different point of view about Mai🌻

Everyone who goes to see the movie is sad for the main character, but I am happy for Mai.

Maybe she missed a chance to love, but in return Mai found a place for herself. An independent, successful woman will have the right to CHOOSE, instead of shrinking into someone else's choice.

People will not care how disadvantaged, miserable you were, whether you endured, or whether your fall was painful or not? People only look at where you stand in the end, then either admire or despise. If you are successful, then all your past is a catalyst, but if not, it's all trash! That's Life!

"Thank you for not waiting for me" sounds heartbreaking, but it is very true. Because if Sau had waited for Mai, would Mai have been happy to marry into a family that once despised her? Would Sau have had enough courage to become a strong shoulder for a woman with a strong personality like Mai? So the director very delicately ended the film with a saying that, for me, is the most profound lesson: "It's not easy, try your best!" Love can make us temporarily forget everything to look into each other's eyes, but to hold our heads high and look at life, to give ourselves a place in the game, love is not enough, we need a foundation!

I hope all women will take the time to watch "MAI" at least once, not to be sad or feel sorry, but to see that every pain has its own value, every scar can be healed, and sometimes we need to hit rock bottom, to discover that in addition to tears, we are also given wings to fly.

Congratulations to the Tran Thanh Town team for creating the most satisfying, satisfying and complete work of art ever. Although the ending is not as beautiful as a dream, it is emotional enough to revive the dormant desires, and is a healing medicine for 'old' women - old but if you try, you can still be an antique, not a scrap, like MAI.

Love knows no boundaries - it is eternal, like the blossoms "Mai" that adorn Vietnam's spring.

In the bustling streets of Vietnam, where tradition intertwines with modernity, "Mai" paints a poignant and visually stunning portrait of a single mother's quest for love amidst cultural intricacies. Directed by the visionary filmmaker Tran Thanh, this enchanting tale transcends borders, inviting audiences into a world where love blooms in unexpected places.

The film follows the journey of Mai, a devoted single mother navigating the complexities of Eastern Asian culture while yearning for companionship. Portrayed with grace and depth by the talented lead actress, Mai's character embodies resilience and hope as she embarks on a quest to find love against the backdrop of traditional values and societal expectations.

One of the most striking elements of "Mai" is its immersive portrayal of Vietnam. The meticulous attention to detail not only adds authenticity to the narrative but also serves as a window into the cultural nuances that influence the characters' choices and relationships.

At its core, "Mai" is a celebration of love in all its forms - romantic, familial, and self-discovery. Through heartfelt performances and evocative storytelling, the film explores the universal themes of longing, acceptance, and the transformative power of human connection. As Mai embarks on a journey of self-discovery, audiences are invited to reflect on their own experiences of love and belonging.

Visually stunning and emotionally resonant, "Mai" is a cinematic masterpiece that captivates the heart and soul. With its compelling narrative, exquisite cinematography, and stellar performances, this enchanting tale leaves a lasting impression, reminding us that love knows no boundaries - it is eternal, like the blossoms "Mai" that adorn Vietnam's spring.

Must see. Beautiful story

This is a beautiful story about the character Mai's journey to find happiness. The character's psychology is portrayed deeply and complexly. The director gave us a deep dive into the character's psychology. This is not a simple romantic movie. This is a movie about life and happiness in every person. Although there are still many errors in the storytelling, this is a significant mark of Vietnamese films. From the film we can see the careful investment in content, images, script and message conveyed. The actors have devoted a lot to their roles. In short, this is a movie worth watching. An incredible cinematic mark from Tran Thanh.

Top of Vietnam, Bottom at International.

As a Vietnamese person, I am just speechless of how this movie can be called and even represented for Vietnam Films industry in general.

Movie wise, this is literally a 80% copy of La La Land from screenplay slap in one more of those "fancy transitions", soap opera stage acting and the on-going box office buff allegations surrounding the film.

Take a look at the reviews on other movie databases, Letterboxd & Rotten Tomatoes. Tran Thanh marketing team literally deleted the film's page just to get rid of the reviews only to re-upload them 1 week after. I do not respect this behavior from a studio that is trying to silence the honest reviews from critics!

The best vietnamese movie in 2024

I recently watched a movie that kept me on the edge of my seat with its surprises. At first, it seemed like a typical romantic film, but the movie Mai offered an authentic glimpse into Vietnamese life through cinema. What impressed me was the character of the mother-in-law, who, despite being a supporting character, used many psychological tricks to drive the plot forward. She not only pushed the story's climax in the second act but managed to do so again in the third and fourth acts. I highly recommend this movie to anyone looking for a great time at the theater. It would be primarily best to go with your family to understand more about your relatives.

Most Loathesome Character Wins All

I can't believe I lost 2 hours of my life watching a movie that ends in triumph for the character I most despised. This confounding tumultuous tale of a carnival-like Vietnamese subculture awash in masseuses, evil neighbors, street thugs and perverts might be exciting to some viewers but it's one rabbit hole I wish I never ventured down. While the fact that many Vietnamese kids will dutifully worship at the feet of judgemental, controlling and selfish parents is something I've seen firsthand, it doesn't make it any easier to witness or accept. From the get-go, the film's protagonists all seem to suffer from a culturally pervasive sort of Stockholm Syndrome. Despite an ephemeral moment or two of promising romantic charm, overall I found the story relentlessly disturbing.

A Disappointing Misfire

After eagerly anticipating "MAI," I left the theater feeling utterly disappointed. While the premise hinted at potential, the execution fell flat, leaving me disheartened by the overall experience.

One of the film's significant pitfalls lies in its script. The dialogue feels forced and artificial, needing more authenticity to engage viewers. Despite attempting to impart moral lessons, the script fails to address the film's underlying issues, leaving unresolved conflicts awkwardly lingering.

Additionally, the film needs help finding its comedic footing. While it endeavors to elicit laughter from the audience, the humor could be better, resulting in bland and forgettable attempts at comedy. Personally, I found myself unaffected by the film's comedic endeavors, a sentiment likely shared by many viewers.

This movie should be three stars, but I give it one star to offset those fake 10-star ratings.

V-Wood on the Rise!

Unlike toandph I thought Mai was a very well made movie.

I thought the script was well written and the movie was well directed.

I'm amazed, in general, by how far Viet Nam has gotten in terms of artistry and music videos. We have came very far from the home made music videos to the short movie music videos that can compete compared to Korea and US. Mai is the first movie that follows that development.

Phuong Anh impersonated Mai tremendously in form of acting and maybe more so looks. She plays it like it was her autobiography. Cinematography, editing, and directing was on point for me also. I was taken aback by the one shot scenes, especially.

Altogether, I think Mai is very worth watching and I hope there's more to come from Viet Nam.

Excellent with several plot twists

Great acting! Not sure why the bad reviews, something about the director? It popped up as a new addition in nflx so checked it out.

Watched it on Netflix with subtitles. The movie was well written with a good mix of comedy, happiness and dramatic. This was the first Vietnamese drama I watched and enjoyed it from beginning to end.

The actors are good, story line was easy to follow, and there were some interesting plot twists. Excellent cinematography for this genre, meaning the camera rolls were uniquely placed for various scenes (I'm trying to describe it as first person). The editing was creative and overall I'd recommend.

Nothing special about this

The script is loose and bad. Feel like a fairy tale and not realistic.

The acting is mediocre.

Nothing so special about the story and the characters. You can watch these kind a lot in mediocre drama in Korea or anywhere.

Not sure why it can make top hit in Vietnam, maybe just because the director is one of the most favorite MC but this is a movie, we need to look at the story and the acting. Both are bad so for sure this is not recommend.

Dont waste your time on this. Go and watch some Korea drama or something else will be better than watching this.

Hope audience in Vietnam watch more foreign movie to have better perspective, to keep the bar higher than this.

Expect nothing

I think I never really watch a lot of Vietnamese film in my life, when this movie release on streaming service, I never really interested to watch it, but when all the hype rising about how good this movie is, I just watch, want to try Vietnamese cinema. I think what is strong from this movie is the female lead, she is so incredibly beautiful, you cannot take eyes off her. Then the story is riveting, it keep you on the edge of your seat, wondering what will happen next. I think the story move very smoothly, all the characters are interesting enough to keep your interest. Especially Phuong Anh Dao, I watch a lot of movie but I think I never seen any actress that is so breathtaking like her, I'm gonna start marathon Vietnamese cinema, dig in a bit what's good they have.

Fantastic movie, must watch!

This movie was so nostalgic and captivating. I cannot stop talking about it! The producers, directors, and cast all did an amazing job. The two leads had incredible chemistry. I felt so alive watching them fall in love-my heart fluttered, jumped, laughed, etc. This movie had the perfect ratio of comedy/ lightheartedness, without taking away from the main plot and storyline. It was definitely a constant tearjerker. I found myself crying of happiness and then of sadness minutes apart. It really did capture a lot of coming-of-age traumas and struggles that many individuals could relate to in some way. This movie was amazing, and I'm so proud to be Vietnamese.

Boffo Box office in Saigon...that's about it.

Nicely shot, vigorously edited....scripted with a jackhammer....this is a soap opera on cinematic steroids.

Emotions run the range from high to extremely high. Plot twists runt the gamut from unbelievable to not credible.

I other words it's ALL over the top, surfing on a wave of high comedy and endless unexpected tragedies.

My only Vietnamese friend has had Viet soaps streaming on his shop TV for the 10 years I have known him. Okay, so maybe it's a cultural thing.

Bringing a nation out of ancient traditions and biases, colonialism, communism and war must be traumatic and confusing.

Absorbing western culture is not a cinematic tonic...it's a cheap emotional ride.

One note...the lead actress maintains her strong character and dignity stoically and that's probably the best thing about this potboiler.

Surpass my expectation

Has been a big fan of international films, selected this title and thinking it's just another boy-meets-girl-turns-good love story.

I was wrong. The storyline, cinematography, casts, has been awesome!

Has been awhile since i come across a great romance movie! No spoiler alert; Tran Thanh managed to capture his audiences throughout, "Mai" is injected with bits of humour, realities of life, the projection of a specific profession that is seen as vice to some, the sacrifices a Mother to her child, and last but not least, sacrifices for love.

Highly recommend "Mai" to any movie fans, i'm quite sure you would not be disappointed!

Good

I recently watched the film "Mai" and found it to be a wonderful experience. The storyline is captivating and beautifully crafted, drawing viewers into the life of Mai, a young woman navigating the complexities of family and tradition. The film successfully portrays the tension between modernity and cultural heritage, making it highly relatable and thought-provoking.

The cinematography is another highlight of the movie. The serene countryside scenes and intimate moments between characters are captured with great finesse. The natural light and earthy tones used throughout the film add a layer of authenticity that enhances the overall viewing experience.

The performances are commendable, particularly Tran Thanh who brings Mai to life with a blend of vulnerability and strength. The supporting cast also delivers solid performances, contributing to the film's emotional depth.

Despite its many strengths, I feel that "Mai" falls just short of perfection. While the movie is engaging and well-executed, there are moments where the pacing feels a bit slow, which slightly diminishes the impact of the narrative. Additionally, some character arcs could have been explored more thoroughly to add further depth to the story.

Overall, "Mai" is a heartfelt and beautifully made film that deserves recognition. I would rate it 8 out of 10 stars, as it is a highly enjoyable and thought-provoking movie, even though it has some minor shortcomings.

A cheap copy cat and boring film

Well, i dont think the copy cat things should be discussing any longer. For movie head, this film may come with alot of shot that's seem familiar. But Leto did it in the worst way, he isnt a real director at all, just some dude has a fame stood behind camera and his staffs did the rest.

The film was too noisy and way too dramatic to watch. The story set a lot of dramas and problems and then left them like that without solving any of them.

The strong point was the shots look much more improved compared to other V-movies. But for the 'romantic-tragedy-comedy' type, it should be on YouTube for free, not charging viewers in theatre.

And another drama around this film was the staff bribed box offices to invade cinema showing times during Tet holiday, mislead audiences to watch the bad movie. Even Avatar 2 by James Cameron have reached that much of showing times.
