A beautiful show

I don't know what I expected when I pressed play on Dying for Sex. Maybe something raunchy as hell. Maybe something extremely depressing. But I wasn't prepared for was how this series would crawl under my skin and just... stay there.

Molly isn't a character. She's a woman unraveling in real time. Her body's failing, and no one knows what to do with that. Not her husband, not her doctors, not even herself. So she does the thing she does best, she makes meaning out of chaos. She dives headfirst into sex, story and sensation. She's doing anything that feels like life while she still has it.

Yeah, this series definitely have it's funny moments. Some parts made me laugh out loud in fact. But the other parts? The other parts felt like being punched in the chest while smiling because underneath Molly's wild stories is a loneliness so sharp it bleeds.

What broke me most wasn't even the diagnosis. It was the friendship. Molly and Nikki. The way they held each other through the fear, the dark jokes, the quiet knowing. It reminded me how love can be both the thing that saves you and the thing that makes the goodbye all the more unbearable.

This show doesn't give you answers. It just hands you the pain, and asks you to feel it.

A really beautiful and well written series.

Wow.

I don't have a lot of words after finishing this. As a cancer survivor, they really nailed it. As someone exploring what intimate life can be like after a cancer diagnosis strips away your identity, knocked it out of the park. Beautiful performance by Michelle as always. Stunning emotion driven performance by Jenny. I found it incredibly realistic in many aspects and couldn't look away. One of the more graphic shows I've seen but that wasn't an issue for me as it seems to be so many, given the negative reviews. Hysterical, touching, devastating. We need more realistic representation of the good, bad and ugly sides of this bastard of a disease.

An often funny but heavy watch

Some shows are best for watching alone in a binge, and being completely devastated by the end of it. This is one of those shows. It's a funny show, but it's so so heavy. There are quite a few troupes and unrealistic TV things (person of color that's basically her fairy godmother, hot stranger that's her neighbor, and apparently she has the best health insurance in America despite not being wealthy), but the core ideas of the show feel so true. So many devastating truths are beautifully explored in nuance and with a rawness that's rarely seen on TV. We might never move past our trauma. Our trauma is part of who we are. We long for intimacy with another human being but we are so scared of it. It might just take death for us to face our truths. The performances are excellent.

Wow

I will have to start this review by saying I'm a nurse for a Cancer Institute. I work specifically with patients as the survivorship and sexual health nurse. Sexual health is often dismissed. To see this show explore all the needs of a patient especially a stage IV survivor was extremely refreshing. Most of the reviews I have seen said this was not tasteful well unfortunately cancer is not. We strive to not only take care of the patient, but also the caregivers. I will have to say I knew going into this show, I would be quite biased as I'm a huge fan of New Girl. I love the contrast between comic relief, and the intense moments. I've lost many patients over the years, but when I lost my mom it was completely different. This show was true to real life and being able to see Molly and Nikki grow and learn peace is something we will all have to do. This is a beautiful take on past, present, future, but mostly learning to be in the moment. I hope everyone will watch this with an open mind and a loving spirit. Thank you all who worked on this and brought it to the forefront of many conversations.

Best Show I've seen in years

Dying for Sex is raw, honest, hilarious, and deeply moving. I absolutely loved it. What starts as a bold story about a woman exploring her sexuality after a terminal diagnosis quickly becomes a beautiful exploration of friendship, healing, and living life on your own terms. The acting is phenomenal-especially the lead, who brings so much heart and vulnerability. I laughed, I cried, and I walked away feeling more alive. This show isn't just about sex-it's about reclaiming joy in the face of grief. Watch it. You'll be glad you did.

I just got an IMDB account to tell you this. That's how much I loved it.

Just beautiful stuff here..

I still can't decide if this was the best or worst thing to watch while agonizing through a current covid infection, but wow. I'm weak and on meds, hyper aware of who is (or will ever be) there for me when I really need them, that coupled with a pretty rough couple years otherwise medically, this series really shattered me. We all wrestle with these thoughts and this show paints it so thoughtfully and beautifully. May we all have someone like Nikki. Michelle Williams is of course perfect, Jenny Slate just the best work I've ever seen her do, Rob Delaney was lovely, Esco Jouléy was exceptional, and I was so jazzed to see Robby Hoffman as well. Everyone was truly in masterclass form. Remove eye makeup before watching, I watched the entire series in one sitting and just shut the tv right off after, I've laughed, I've sobbed, I'm emotionally drained, literally. But it was so worth it. Emmys and Globes don't let me down.

Ps: to any pearl clutchers (or claspers if you will) in the reviews; ART HAS NO RESPONSIBILITY TO BE PALATABLE OR MORAL FOR YOU. Not everyone is you, we're all on our own journey, and if THIS series doesn't get that through to you, then you're a lost cause. *tips hat*

Very emotional ending.

I started watching the series thinking it would be just a silly comedy, and the first episodes really feel that way, humorous, and a bit absurd. But as the series progresses, it takes a surprisingly deep and emotional turn. The episodes become more reflective, exploring themes like regret, grief, human feelings, and the will to live out our desires. Molly shows us the complexity of being human, while Nikki proves to be the kind of loyal, supportive friend we all wish we had.

I have to admit, the final episodes made me cry and reflect on my own life. This show is the perfect example of not judging a show by its cover.

Sex & Death

Dying for Sex is a comedy drama miniseries for FX on Hulu. It stars Michelle Williams and is based on the podcast series of the same name by Wondery and Nikki Boye

Dying for Sex is an 8-part limited series on FX, based on the real-life experiences of Molly Kochan, who documented her journey with terminal cancer and sexual exploration in a podcast. The show follows Molly (played by Michelle Williams), a woman diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer, who decides to leave her husband Steve (Jay Duplass) to explore her long-suppressed sexual desires. Supported by her best friend Nikki (Jenny Slate), Molly embarks on a journey of self-discovery and empowerment, navigating the complexities of mortality and intimacy.

The acting in "Dying for Sex" is superb, with Michelle Williams delivering a career-best performance as Molly. Her portrayal is both poignant and humorous, capturing the nuances of a woman reclaiming her life in the face of death. Jenny Slate shines as Nikki, providing a strong supporting role that highlights the depth of their friendship. The ensemble cast, including Jay Duplass, Rob Delaney, and Sissy Spacek, adds depth and complexity to the narrative, ensuring that each character feels fully realized and relatable

The direction by writers Elizabeth Meriwether and Kim Rosenstock is commendable for balancing humor and pathos effectively. While the early episodes may feel a bit rushed, the series builds towards a powerful conclusion that is both emotionally resonant and thought-provoking. The use of the French term "la petite mort" to describe both orgasm and emotional death adds a layer of depth to Molly's journey, symbolizing her reclamation of her body and self

The series explores themes of mortality, desire, and empowerment, intertwining them in a way that is both humorous and profound. Show also explore various coping mechanisms people use when dealing with mortality, such as humor, denial, and acceptance. Molly's journey offers a nuanced portrayal of how individuals navigate these complex emotions. It challenges the conventional view of death and sex as opposites, instead highlighting their intrinsic connection as fundamental aspects of human biology. The show encourages viewers to live life to the fullest, embracing every moment with passion and purpose

Dying for Sex is a remarkable series that transcends its provocative premise to deliver a deeply moving exploration of life, love, and mortality. With outstanding performances and thoughtful direction, it challenges us to confront their own fears and desires, ultimately reminding us to cherish every moment. While it may not be an easy watch, especially in its emotional final episodes, it is a journey well worth taking for its profound insights into the human experience.

The most hilariously sexy, tragically beautiful, incredible thing I have ever seen!

I saw a trailer for this tonight and immediately went to Disney to start it - except I could not stop. Turning it off was not an option, I was swept away, fully immersed. Dying fr Sex was awkward and honest, hilarious and kinky, and the most achingly, beautiful portrayal of friendship, self-discovery, healing, and dying that I have ever seen. I could not tear my eyes or my heart away from this series. The moments between women, nonbinary, and LGBTQ+ characters were poignant, intimate, and soul-crushingly beautiful - whether they were in storerooms, hospital rooms, or bathrooms. The complexity of relationships, the absolute and total respect for boundaries, the raw and unflinchingly honest portrayals... ugh. This show had me sobbing and smiling in equal measure - the story will stay with me. I'm just blown away.

And it would not be such a smashing success without the incredible performances, namely Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate, Esco Jouley, Rob Delaney, and Kelvin Yu. Wow. Williams is always incredible and this was among her best work. And Slate - I love her, she shined so bright in this. They all did.

The cinematography and directing, the lighting and music - everything about this was gorgeous, intentional and meaningful. WOW!

Just a fantastic limited series. I will absolutely watch this again.

A tale of two shows

One on hand, this is a lovely, touching story of a woman facing cancer death with her best friend and her mother. The acting is great at times. Sissy Spacek is excellent. The actress who played Nicki was solid. Michelle Williams was good at times, but at other times I just couldn't take her character seriously. Which leads me to my next point...

On the other hand, this is a ridiculous story of a woman looking for weird, raunchy sexual situations. I kept wanting to turn the show off when the sex got so bizarre (peeing on a guy dressed as a dog turns you on??). Most of the "sex" scenes were barely watchable. They could have told the same story without going off the deep end.

Michelle Williams Deserves Better

The subject is interesting and could have been a chance to show something special. The director started strong and made me feel the frustration Molly is going through with her husband.

As a cancer survivor myself I also didn't want any sympathy. So I believe in Molly, Jenny Slate is super as Nikki. The nurse is ridiculous. There might be valid places for a man nurse to advise a woman in kinky sex "I like being hogtied" he says.

Well during my treatment when I did discuss sex, and in West Hollywood too no one offered to say that to me, man or woman.

Michelle does her best but the sex scenes are never plausible or believable. Nor is her day alone to learn. Yes it is a comedy but this subject should use the struggles with their inevitable humour to play against the pathos.

Ali Wong nails this. I wouldn't say skip but you are likely to be frustrated at the missteps. Of which Sonya is biggest and ruins the entire premise.

Truly refreshing

A lot of people won't like this show because they just want another joyful, beautiful love story about a dying wife being taken care of by her devoted husband. Well, that's not what you'll get here and it is also not reality. Terminally ill women are not victims or props who lose their personalities or desires. They have the right to live and die the way they want to. And to leave a marriage that's broken.

This is a powerful show with phenomenal performances by Williams, Slate and Delaney. I watched it in one sitting. Since I am sick and can't do anything else. For months. And I am glad i didn't have to watch another show about how beautiful dying is...

Michelle Williams' Masterful Performance!

I absolutely loved the series 'Dying for Sex.' It's a rollercoaster of emotions-funny, sad, and everything in between. The storyline is both heartwarming and heartbreaking, capturing the complexities of life and relationships. Michelle Williams once again delivers an outstanding performance, bringing depth and authenticity to her character. Her portrayal is both powerful and nuanced, making every moment memorable. 'Dying for Sex' is a must-watch for anyone who appreciates a blend of humor and heartfelt drama. It's a testament to the resilience and beauty of the human spirit. The series leaves a lasting impact, making you reflect on life's profound moments.

A series about living

I would not of actively chosen to watch a show about terminal cancer having lost a close friend to it very recently. The raunchy title hooked me in and before I knew I was skillfully led through a story that would help me process a lot of feelings and laugh and cry without becoming all consumed with the awful awfulness that is cancer.

And that's because this series doesn't give cancer the limelight, it shows a lot of the realities but that's not what this show is mainly about. Its about a woman's journey to become present and authentic to herself. It's about intimacy, falling in love with yourself and friendship. And it's super kinky and it's about cancer....should those things go together?

I'm glad they chose to!

The Normal That Kills Us

After reading its introduction, I decided to watch the series. I must admit, I really liked the humor created between the title and the subject. After watching it, I realized how wrong it is to label the series solely as being "about cancer." This series isn't just about cancer; it's actually a story of a person finding herself-something far beyond just a disease. And unfortunately, many people who live long lives don't even have the courage to do that. Sometimes, a person who is suddenly faced with a life-threatening illness can actually be luckier than the living when it comes to understanding life and themselves. This is the story of a woman who manages to grasp that chance.

From the direction and the script to the acting performances and the flow of the story, absolutely everything was perfect. The entire cast delivered phenomenal performances. It felt like they were all playing voluntarily, like they wanted to be part of this project. They wanted to act and to bring this story to us. They acted with intention-and that matters a lot.

One of the things I loved most about the series was the presence of emotion. There's no emotional manipulation, but there is a lot of raw, unpolished feeling-real and honest. Perhaps its most educational aspect is how it shows that what we've been taught as "normal" is actually abnormal. And sadly, many people around the world become sick and die because of the so-called "normals" they are forced to live under.

💯 Totally on point!!

This is the best, binge-watched television (or in my case tablet) show I've seen in a very long time!! As a breast cancer survivor, this series is so on point!! 💯 💗💗 Couple of big differences between my cancer journey and hers, but I truly love/live the main theme of "Live Like You are Dying" because you ARE gonna die one day. Get the most out of life and enjoy it!! Michelle Williams, Jenny Slate, really the whole cast are at the top of their game and the WRITING, especially the inner dialogue in Michelle William's voice, is so heartwarming and heartbreakingly genuine, it's like a documentary. Highly recommend, not only to my Cancer Survivor Friends, but to everyone (mature audiences only)!! 🤗💛

If you've ever listened to the podcast, you won't be disappointed how they played it out.

I listened to the podcast a few years ago and my did this show not disappoint. Just like the podcast, I cried, I laughed and felt every emotion humanly possible while watching this. The main characters played their part perfectly. It was raw and so funny. I didn't imagine to cry as much as I did in the end but it just reminded me how beautiful this story is. Some parts may seem weird and crazy, but that's how the story really goes. I'll definitely be thinking about this show for the next few weeks, as I did when I finished the podcast. I really came into this show thinking they wouldn't do the story justice but they blew it out the park, it's perfect in so many ways. Just watch it!

I really enjoyed this series ...

I really enjoyed this series, and it made me laugh over and over and over. I would agree that most of us would not abandon our spouses to go explore sex with strangers ... in all its expressions. Her bucket list was "I want to have an orgasm before I die". It was about who am I as a sexual being ... what do I want ... what do I need.

It's a series about journeys ... with friends, family, medical providers, support groups, strangers ... about how to live when there isn't a lot of time "to" live.

That said, her marriage was dysfunctional and what she wanted and what she needed ignored due to a spouse's anxiety at making sure she "lives".

Def worth a watch

Many shy away from their sexual desires or stay in sexless relationships in extreme loneliness and I have seen first hand how someone can react to being diagnosed with late stage untreatable cancer in this exact way. Many funny moments and great cast chemistry but Jenny Slate for me is the stand out here. Give this a try. A great reminder of how important precious friendships are and how much palliative care with loved ones support is so very much needed for someone dealing with late stage cancer. A great ode to the brave and huge hearted palliative care workers of the world. I binged it easily. Maybe you will too. Worth a watch..

Just Incredible

This story pulls you in. By the end of it, it felt like I had been there with them all. I think there are very few shows that portray women's sexuality in such a fierce way, and society seems to shy away from conversations about it.

This is a story of heartbreak, friendship, family, and ... sex! It can be a bit of an adjustment if you aren't used to this sort of subject matter, but please go in with an open mind. I guarantee that everyone who watches this series will learn *something*. I do wonder if some of the naysayers are people who watched it that just can't relate to being a woman, or being terminal, or having this friendship, but I still think everyone should at least give it a try, at the very least it's good for a few laughs.

Loathsome

I get that we've been inundated with too many stories of angelic patients with cancer who pass away only thinking of others and helping them cope with their impending loss.

But this... this is disgusting.

Turning your back on a your husband of 15 years so you can masturbate in a hotel room, giggle like a schoolgirl at receiving dozens of dick pics, and sleep with strangers you meet at bars is such a vapid hedonistic move that I lack words.

We're supposed to take her side because her husband is too emotional about her dying to have sex with her. He is literally doing everything he can to take care of her and help her through this psychologically. But no, she should leave him to investigate BDSM!

What an empowering message about exploring your sexuality! Not!

If a man left his wife under similar circumstances, I sincerely doubt the audience would be rooting for him to get it on and have as many sexual experiences as possible while his wife of 15 years worries desperately about his wellbeing!

I mean, sex can be wonderful, but it is just one component of a person's life. You are more than your body's sexual urges!

Putting aside my obvious distaste for the main character's unsympathetic decisions, what is supposed to make this worth watching?

The conversations aren't funny or deep. The sexual content is graphic but not exactly appealing. The only interesting character was Jenny Slate's Nikki. Michelle Williams is a tip-top performer, and she gives this way more credibility than it frankly deserves. But none of this is enough to recommend it from my perspective.

The short episode lengths are a clear sign the producers knew there wasn't enough to sustain audience interest for 45 minutes, but a comedy this sure isn't. If Williams and others involved get comedy category nominations at awards shows, this will be clear category fraud.

I've seen two episodes and I am done. I don't need to keep watching people validate the hedonistic and self-absorbed behavior of the protagonist.

Cancer is not an excuse to do anything you want no matter who gets hurt along the way.
