Disappointed by ending

This one is an exception for me. Usually, if I see a show or movie, that starts in a way, that suggests that we should know something about what's already happening (no matter how small those things are) and does not start with some flashback like "You must be wondering how I got here", and it's not a sequel - I drop those. Intention is clear: they want to show a "busy world", but more often than not that's just covering up bad writing, since neither the world nor the characters get a natural introduction. It may work in extremely rare cases, I guess, but I can't think of a good one.

The Crow Girl does it right, though. It feels completely natural, as if we are walking in on the characters going on about their days. The interactions that we see also do introduce the characters to us properly and, again, naturally. The introductions do not feel forced, and they are meaningful, starting to explore the relationships right from the start. This generally keeps up through the whole season, too, although quality does drop somewhat sometimes, but still the feeling of "natural" is preserved for the most part, which is really important for a crime series, especially when it's trying to be psychological, as well.

Until the ending happens. I won't spoil it, but the plot twist was shown in a way, that is only possible with because it's a visual medium. It's just the camera showing us 1 thing, when in reality it was another one. It felt like I was lied to, even though the twist itself does kind of make sense. I really wonder how this was handled in a book (probably just omitting descriptions at certain points), and I can get it, that it might have been difficult to do certain shots differently, but in general just obscuring the view would have worked much better, than this. Because of this, I can't give it more than 6/10.

Which show am I watching?

What do you get if you take Eve Myles's Faith from Keeping Faith and Dougray Scott's DI Ray Lennox from Crime and send them to Bristol? You get The Crow Girl!

Maybe I am too cynical these days and Police shows have to have the smart talking main character detective who plays fast and loose, they put their work above all else including their family, then there needs to be the incompetent police sidekicks who have to be told to do everything, and the stern boss who berates the main character but relents when they see that the unconventional methods are working, so if you're into that then take a peek at this.

To be fair the wife liked it, I found it frustrating in the first episode but then it did get quite creepy in terms of the subject matter.

Ultimately it's OK in the grand scheme, you could do worse, like watching a Harlan Coban adaptation.

A bit slow but...

I truly do not want to give anything away here. Others have criticised The Crow Girl for having too many plot lines that don't all get wrapped up... but that is what season 2 is for? Weird thing to pick apart really, since this is not a standalone movie.

The first 2-3 episodes are a quite slow and challenging to watch, but it's all worth it for the plot twist towards the end. Usually I see things coming from a mile away but not this one. It's extraordinarily well done whilst at the same time you'll be kicking yourself for not figuring it out in the first place.

In other news: Eve Myles is bloody brilliant in this. Great actor.

Oppressive

I don't really understand why people have to say it was predictable. Yes, of course some things are predictable; so much has been made over time. Try coming up with something new. I liked the lead actress, but I found her husband an annoying freeloader. Her team was okay, and I found the story very oppressive. But from my perspective, it was pretty good. I watched it in one sitting. And I was sad that it was over, I would have liked to see another season, with a new case.

(Can someone explain to me why I have to write a bunch of sentences when someone else can do it in 10? I'm sure you can't email me, but try it. Pip2020 Via DuckDuckGo email address.

Dark, unpredictable and absolutely gripping

Dark and gripping, Crow Girl is a murder mystery series that masterfully blends grim themes with sharp, intelligent writing. I think the show captures the city of Bristol's eerie charm as a perfect backdrop for a tale of betrayal, corruption, and deeply flawed characters. The writing is razor-sharp, full of unexpected twists that never felt forced. The show delves deep into the psyches of its leads, crafting complex, often harrowing arcs that resonate long after each episode ends. Equal parts chilling and captivating, Crow Girl is a must-watch for fans of atmospheric crime dramas. Couldn't recommend it more.

Thanks Slash! Masterpiece

Thanks so much Slash for bringing this to the screen. Great cast, great swirling plot, superb blend of contemporary issues and man's inhumanity to man!

Love it when you suss some of the plot lines and get blindsided by others. Wife and I were so absorbed by the plot that we watched the lot over 2 nights. In fact it so drew us in that we almost didn't notice the soundtrack. Must have blended in so well. Will go back and listen out for it.

I'm sure some will criticise elements of the show but we loved the clever devices used.

There were elements of Silent Witness and Vera which is meant as praise indeed. If the next series builds on this wonderful beginning we will be in Paradise City!

Started well finished badly

I'm ok with a slow burn start as the characters aee introduced and the initial mystery is laid out . I'm ok with twists and turns as characters react to events and reveal their strengths, weaknesses and secrets.

I'm not ok with characters who do stupid things for plot reasons, especially in the last episode, which is an absolute mess and undermines much of the work done getting us there.

The Big reveal is largely telegraphed, but is one of the few things that makes any sense.

And of course the dreaded To Be Continued appeared as the screen faded to black.

I wont be holding my breath for season 2.

Slow start but when it gets going. Wow

I wasn't sure about this series after EP 1. But things got going after that and what a ride it was.

I thoroughly enjoyed the crow girl. It really held me.

The series has quite a few things going on at once. You've got misdirection and red herrings thrown in for good measure.

The leads are excellent. Support is very good too.

Maybe the most unconvincing is the doctor but there's a reason for that.

The series avoids getting bogged down in internal and family politics. Yes there's some in there but they never get intrusive.

I'm Really looking forward to the second season.

I originally thought it was a self contained one off series.

Thankfully it's not.

Can't wait for season 2.

I like detective dramas but not this one.

I watched 2 episodes and that was enough for me. It moves at glacial speed and isn't focused. Like an American police drama you get a lot of family drama thrown in which is distracting and worthless plus a demanding boss. I really don't care about DCI Kilburn's home situation. Why is a detective inspector the bagman for a detective chief inspector, normally a DCI has a sergeant. It's what I always enjoyed about the series "Vera", she rarely brought in any family stuff and her bosses let her do her job.

This is from a novel by Erik Axl Sund which is the pen name of two Swedish writers. Some Scandinavian novels should be dramatized like "The Killing" and "The Bridge", but I would have left "The Crow Girl" on the shelf.

Nice that it's set in Bristol and not London. I hated Dougray Scott in "Crime", but he's good in this series. I liked Eve Myles in "Torchwood".

A challenging watch but very clever

This show bravely tackles some really challenging themes and knits all of the sub-plots together very convincingly. Every character is well judged and perfectly executed by the respective actors. The last time that I was caught off guard as much of this was by the very excellent "Behind Her Eyes" but as plot twists go, this was right up there.

For once, it was also good to see a senior police officer being portrayed as pragmatic and willing to get involved, so often these days they are just hapless blockers who are only interested in press conferences and clean up rates.

I cannot wait for the remaining episodes to drop to see how it all plays out.

Great detective series

I think this is really another great, British detective series. Yes, some of it we have certainly seen several times before (the police officer with a troubled personal life, conflicts with the boss etc etc....). But I still think this one ranks among the best in the category.....the acting is absolutely top class from all actors, the story develops in a suspenseful way and for the final twist.....I really don't understand all the negative comments on that? Personally I had never seen it coming? My only concern is that I can see a season 2 is already planned, and I'm afraid that one will just be "milking" the story rather than adding something really new (as the plot is already to some extend wrapped up now I'd say)......but we will of course have to wait and see about that...:-)

A slow unsatisfactory attempt to be dramatic.

Complicated in an unintelligent confused way that played like the writers made it up as they went along, then suddenly realised they needed an ending. An ending unsupported by the previous chaotic episodes trying to make several different stories into one and failing to tell any completely.

Filled with frustrating slow scenes of characters badly acting struggles with inner demons which any responsible adult would be able to dismiss in a breath.

Disappointing and obvious, boring at times, shallow drama belonging on daytime TV if anywhere.

The very annoying thing about this kind of show is like the dentist, you have to suffer to get to the result or ending, just bad but gripping enough to make me want to see what Happens next.

Enchanting

As a Swede, I read "Kråkflickan" some years ago, thinking it was a great story: the authors Erik Axl Sund infused an excellent criminal plot with their backgrounds in psycho therapy. It made the story somehow different from other criminal/detective stories focusing on raditional police work - fresh!

I am eager to see what #2 "Hungerseld" and #3 "Pythians anvisningar" will turn into in the seasons to come. It's not a spoiler saying the trilogy is by far the best criminal drama I've read (and I do read a lot) and that the authors have managed to describe human's evil in a way no one ever did before!

Anyway - in this series, the story moved from Stockholm, understandable considering the production! Great environment! I think the actors perform great! The script is clearly adapted to the screen with some focus on family, colleagues and so on (some small detourscompared to the novel), just to keep the story flowing! I think the production is really succesful in describing what's different in this story: the psychological twist that puts focus on the evil men do and how it affects and traumatizes people.

If you want action, blood and police officers banging on doors, there are other series/books. I am longing for the seasons to come!

Loved the plot but...

Loved the main plot but there were too many others ongoing. I guess that's why it's to be continued. Eve Myles was excellent in Keeping Faith and she makes a credible detective but not a DCI. The home life scenario was a bit weak and cliche. Totally unbelievable as a family unit. Dougray Scott excellent in Crime was disappointing as a side kick. His screen presence and acting ability outshone his co-stars. Katherine Kelly was, as always, Katherine Kelly. She plays a great character as long as it's Katherine Kelly! Maybe she's just not my cup of tea. Overall was a decent watch though if only for Scott and Myles.

Dark, suspenseful, edge of your seat

This was absolutely great! It's been a long time since a show kept me glued to the tv episode after episode. I watched this in one day and I am thoroughly left hanging with vaited breath for season 2. I'm not going to put in any spoilers, the series is too new for that and there's a lot of people who haven't seen it yet. My main reason for the review is just to give my opinion on what I thought of the whole thing. It is definitely worth your time.

I don't understand why other's have said it finished badly. Unless it's because they wanted all the answers now and were not expecting a second season. I was surprised by the endiing where it informed us with a "to be continued", only because there were no hints anywhere that it was more than just one season. Sneaky! But I'm so glad. The number of interconnected plots kept me guessing and deciphering. I really appreciate a story that doesn't give me everything in one basket, one that keeps me on my toes trying to put it all together. Dougray Scott is the only actor I'm familiar with and he's always very good. This time he was so good I actually changed my feelings towards him (for this show LOL!) I thought all the actors were good.

I hope we don't wait for long for the continuation.

A waste of time!

Too many threads in the plot.

The characters are not believable even though the actors tried there best.

Probably based on a bad book !

I will in the future stay away from anything written by this duo " Eriik Axl Sundh".

I do not think the writers o the script could corrupt a bad story to make it even worse even if they tried!

The story line is not believable for a second.

I was hoping it would improve, from a shaky start in the first episodes.

But it did not!

It got worse!!

The "knots" are are not untied in the end.

One of the worst series I've seen.

Don't bother! ! ! ! Find something else to watch, read a good book or take nap !

It is even more worthwhile to watch paint dry then watch this series.

More of the same boring drama from UK

Same old tired formula. Unorthodox cop with issues at home ... WOW how unique. The casting is woeful - yeah a brash cop has an artistic husband or partner at home and both actors have ZERO credibility as a couple. Of course it's the mandatory mixed race couple. Who would have guessed?

So it's a grooming gang in Bristol made up of Caucasian males. Caucasians are the baddies and minorities are good.. who would have guessed?

Caucasian cops are brash and Mike is the only nice one. Speaking of cops, it's based in Bristol but the two main cops have heavy accents plus audio is bad so closed captions are necessary.

Boring boring, dark and ugly scenery. Depressing series. Is this the end of UK drama. Is there anything new and exciting on the horizon or just the same over and over. One can live in hope.

I would lawyer up if this DCI questioned me about jaywalking

Both DCI Jeanette Kilburn and eminent psychotherapist Dr. Sophia Craven are extremely unlikable. DCI Kilburn is overtly rude to everyone in her life and everyone she meets. Think the first two and a half seasons of Bosch where the only likable characters were Crate and Barrel. Go back and see how that changed. Anyway, I digress. I think the Crow Girl suffers from trying to be too stylish or mysterious rather than keeping an interesting storyline afloat. There is almost constant eerie cello music nearly as loud as the dialogue which itself is rife with thick accents. Is that for realism? I understand this is a British series but I haven't had this much trouble following the diction of main character's before. DCI Kilburn and her partner DI Lou Stanley's travel in and out of "street talk" with reckless abandon. I've seen both Eve Myles and Dougray Scott in other shows so I know they can speak the "Queen's English" fluently. Oh yeah, I almost forgot about Dr. Sophia Craven. Well, she is kind of forgettable. I guess she's there for "friction" with DCI Kilburn but as I've already established, she can create plenty on her own.

Very poor drama.

This is extremely slow and dull. The actress Katherine Kelly seems to play the same character in everything she does stern, suspicious with zero personality and yet she is quite an accomplished actress. Dougray Scott also a good actor and completely wasted in this drivel. What an earth made them take this turkey on who knows.

It has a bleak meandering tone, with a lacklustre intelligent dialogue so all in all quite a chore to watch. I only lasted two episodes in the hope it would pick up and become interesting but alas no and ends up as one of these dull generic churned out dramas that have nothing new or interesting to offer.
