Good but not convincing

Immediate comparisons to the Hollywood show "The Rookie" which is a somewhat ridiculous show partly because the rookie is the lead in all things and the crime world somehow revolves around the rookie. The same thing occurs in this Canadian production. The rookie solves all crimes and seemingly needs no training at all. So, it's silly from that point of view. Exactly the same storyline's could have been used with a seasoned veteran and would have made more sense.

The upside is that it's well made and well acted so it is certainly watchable. It does look like it will rise above a certain bland level but it'll occupy you pleasantly for an hour or so.

A great surprise

I have been pleasantly surprised by this series. The acting is excellent, bringing the characters to life, the soundtrack is great, a nice counterpoint to the story, helping bring it alive, the cinematography is well done, the camera work and sets are all excellent, the seasonal story arc is very interesting, i love shows that have a seasonal story running in the background of the episodic stories, and the episodic stories are all great, interesting and entertaining and lastly all the characters feel real, not generic or flat, so great casting, which is good because a show is so much better when the characters have depth and realness., Really enjoying Allegiance!

Just bad

Allegiance is just bad. It feels less like a cop show and more like some kid's Wattpad story. Cheesy dialogue, boring camerawork, and plot holes galore. I won't fault it for trying to push a moral in each episode, whether it's about safe supply or gun control, but the execution is so crude it just comes off as either propaganda or a kids show. The way the show tackles its issues is so shallow and one-sided, we might as well be reading the local NDP candidate's Twitter threads. Whereas earlier Canadian police procedurals like Rookie Blue and Flashpoint gave us a reason to care about the guest character of the week, this show seems to use them as props for our main character to pontificate about the week's social issue. If you're looking for chase scenes or action sequences, look elsewhere. Our Mary Sue main character can't run worth anything, conveniently letting the bad guy get away every time. Every action scene consists of people pointing guns at each other, somehow not getting extra ventilation holes, and being completely charmed by our main character's cheesy recycled pseudo-profound BS speech. The acting is overwrought, but it's hard not to be for dialogue like this (and most of it is exposition). The only character with any believability is the male rookie's training officer, Gabinski, for the few scenes he appears.

There are YouTube Originals that are better than this. If CBC wants to keep its funding under a more hostile government, it needs to do better.

Very impressed so far

I have to admit - I very often hate 'Canadian' movies and some Can. TV shows. But this show is impressive.

This is like a Canadian version of the TV series The Rookie, starring Nathan Fillion. The female lead is similar to Nathan's character in that she is competent to a impressive degree.

I've watched 2 episodes so far, and the action is great, and the show is SMART, and well filmed. It helps the main characters are pleasant to look at.

I'm not sure if I'll get tired of the show pushing the anti-racism message. It's present - but not offensively preachy so far.

I'm looking forward to the third ep. I'm already invested in the characters.

Amateurish 'Allegiance' fails to intrigue

I couldn't make it through the pilot episode of this new 2024 spy drama on CBC. The story follows a rookie cop named Sabrina (by Supinder Wraich) who faces turmoil when her politician father is accused of treason.

While the premise seems interesting, the execution is lackluster. The acting feels, even worse, stiff and unrealistic. The plot also has some glaring holes that are hard to ignore. I gave up halfway through because the amateurish directing and acting made it too difficult to stay engaged. There are much better shows out there to watch instead.

In short, 'Allegiance' falters with uninspired writing, weak acting, and a dull pilot that made me stop watching after one episode.

Rating: Only 4 out of 10 stars and I really can't recommend tuning in to future episodes.

Has potential.

"Allegiance", the new Canadian cop drama on CBC, transcends the typical police procedural. Set in Surrey, British Columbia, it follows Sabrina Sohal (Supinder Wraich), a fresh police academy graduate dealing with her father's arrest. The show delves into racism, class, and power, while maintaining gripping tension. With Canada's natural beauty as a backdrop, it's an intriguing watch that tackles universal issues.

Sabrina's journey is compelling, as she grapples with her duty as a cop versus personal matters. The series confronts racism head-on, challenging the "colorblind" argument and exposing the consequences of diversity efforts. Luke (Lachlan Quarmby), her white co-worker, embodies jealousy and privilege, adding depth to the narrative. Despite some predictability, "Allegiance" is an entertaining and thought-provoking addition to the genre, proudly showcasing Canada's distinctive culture and landscapes.

The acting is good, but it feels like the script is written by artificial intelligence

The hero is perfect, instinctively comes to the right conclusion by guessing and always manages to get to the heart of the criminal to have them surrender. It would be okay if the supporting characters were there for any reason except to be a soundboard for her brilliant thinking (and minutely helping to connect the dots) or showcasing her superiority over her peers. There is a lot of talent that is not being used to full potential. All of the actors are good but the script is too predictable, the only character that is developing is the main character, and she is turning so cheesy perfect that she really is not likeable. I think they are using the same Artificial Intelligence script writing for Departure, another show that I initially thought would be interesting.

Smart. Edgy. Relevant.

What a great new cop drama from GEM. Allegiance is well acted, well filmed, fast paced, and tackles real issues in realistic ways. It is so refreshing to see a cop drama explore issues of race, gender, discrimination, and privilege without either over-simplifying or getting all preachy.

The character in allegiance are well developed, relatable and well acted. The lead is likeable but imperfect and the conflicts are nuanced and not contrived. The cast has depth with each character getting enough development to make you want to know more, see more.

I live in Surrey and this show hits the right tone. Natural beauty. Struggling neighborhoods. Diversity. We'll done GEM. Keep this one going.

Interesting first episode with many themes to explore

Enjoyed the first episode, it was engaging & interesting. The characters felt believable, the story line was something that felt plausible especially in this current climate. There's some veteran actors here who carry the story nicely, and for a Canadian show it felt like something more interesting that has some weight to it. I don't know much about Surry (sp?), but have watched many shows filmed around Vancouver, Canada and recognized some of the area. Hope the show can stay focused on the issues facing policing, and not get too bogged down by the personal lives which I also feel drags a show down. I also appreciated seeing more diverse stories in a cop show format - I'll definitely be tuning in to see what comes next.

Decent pilot, looking forward to seeing more

It's been a while since I saw a show that was shot and set in the lower mainland (Continuum is the last one that comes to mind for me) but I thought this was decently set up and executed.

I feel like it was fairly true to the city it's depicted in, not being in enforcement I can't say how accurate the policing was and I'm sure there was some embellishment.

There was some less than stellar acting but really only from a couple of actors. A lot of actors have fairly extensive portfolios so it was nice to see a cast with decent acting chops.

All in all, I think it's worth a watch and I hope it gets a chance to air more episodes. Good job team.

Welcome to amateur hours. Horrible, don't waste your time!

Oh, wow, as they say, the time wasted watching this nonsense can never be retrieved!

The first 3 minutes were good and gave you great expectations. Then went down hill fast like a avalanche.

This is probably the worst tv series I have ever watched in my lifetime.(I think it's made for kids) Not only is the plot full of holes, it would do justice to a colander, but the acting is atrocious. All you see is relentless pout and white veneers, it is embarrassing.

Overall the acting contributes to the failure & it makes it difficult to watch past 20 minutes as the acting/performances are utterly embarrassingly terrible. I'm sat here in utter disgust with the entirety of the 1. Episode.

Very well done

I am from Canada, and normally programing for shows can be not so good. With this show it has it all, Drama, Crime, Gangs, Child theft, and much more. They touch on issues that show what has happened in Canada's past, showing crimes in perspective to wrongful doing. This show gives you great acting, great indepth story lines and Characters that have deep connections. I am proud to say that this is one of Canada's better shows. Well done to the full cast and crew making such artistry.

The show itself is quite indepth, a big story line with its twists and turns and weekly smaller story lines with all the drama that leaves you wanting more.

Allegiance

The people who criticize a show after the first episode are nothing but haters. This is an excellent police drama that shows the issues and struggles of a Police Force is Surrey BC. I have many relatives that are in Law Enforcement, they all agree that this procedural drama is very realistic. The show also deals with the struggle of the youth that are growing up in that city. It also showcases the culture of the people who are trying to raise and keep safe their children from the "gang culture". I do not know of another canadian drama that deals with these issues. Enrico is an excellent actor. I enjoyed this series. Jay.

Allegiance tops...

Great police drama in a tv famine.

Canadian series with rookie police agent in her Surrey hometown.

Rookie good acting & captured my interest thru out.

Surprising find that engaged me completely from ep.1 thru the complete series.

Pretty much binged the series as so enjoyable.

Good acting & loved seeing my old Veronica Mars favourite ie. Enrico Colantoni in this series.

Terrific that each episode complete & engrossing.

Over arching theme re her father's own problem.

Hope to see Season 2 as a definite watch.

Recommend this series to others looking for well acted, produced police drama...

Boring & uninspiring, not meaningful

I wish this series was more inspiring, but it really isnt. Just average not very interesting or meaningful episodes. I could fall asleep since nothing much is happening and I dont feel any particular interest in the characters. I guess the unfair situation with the Minister is interesting but that's not the main point in most of the episodes. So really nothing to see here, nothing to get excited about. No gripping scenes. Who cares what happens to her. And as usual I have to write extra amounts of words just to fill in the excessive word requirement. Always frustrating and completely unnecessary.

Every Canadian should see this. It is the best television I have ever seen. Kudos to the creators and actors

We watched the first six episodes and enjoyed them immensely. The seventh episode was mind bending, and something that every Canadian should see. This series needs to continue. It provides messaging that no other show does.

The characters were very well developed and provided a deep understanding of social issues about which we never had a full appreciation. The portrayal of an older person being able to contribute to a younger person's understanding, while still recognizing that the younger people also have so much to contribute, was both inspiring and optimistic for the future. We desperately hope this will not be canceled.

Allegiance, a Gem!

Finally a police procedural series that addresses the issues of the community. The Rookie has become nothing but a soap opera with "cops" falling all over each other in lust. It has gone on too long. Allegiance brings a fresh approach and it is wonderful to see the lower mainland actually being recognized in the show. Just finished the latest episode addressing the double standard held for native Indians. Very emotional and better yet, very believable. Wonderful to see a female lead and for all intensiive purposes this actress takes her role seriously. Please give thrips series a chance there is a lot more to explore.

More seasons please

I was hooked by the end of the first episode. Living across the river piqued my interest. If you like police detective shows then you will like this one . Looking forward to season 2 . Female lead police woman her role seems a little far fetched for her not having the experience under her belt but I like her methods. I also like her mentor . I have seen him act in police shows before and he is a comfortable actor and I enjoy what he brings to the show. The show is fast paced doesn't lag . I like it is to the point , no fillers . I like the season finale it ended clean and left it open for more.

Thrilling, Creative, Superb!

So much thrill in this show, each episode i'm left sitting at the edge of my seat curious to know what will happen next. Every week I watch the next new episode. Representation matters, it means a lot to see a south asian actor on the screen executing this show so precisely. I really hope the show renews for a second season, can't wait to see what else will be revealed!

I love all the characters in the show, I would definitely give this show a try to see if you're intrigued and it can pull you into wanting more and more!

The show has an amazing flow and I really appreciate them highlighting a lot of diverse issues which make the show quite educational.

Excellent show

Relevant content and well acted police drama with Canadian heart. Enrico Colantoni is excellent, as is the rest of the cast.

I enjoy programs like Rookie so appreciate having a similar Canadian program highlighting our current issues and with streets and landmarks I recognize.

Yes, it is a bit of a stretch that a young rookie officer can quickly solve so many cases and move up the ranks, but television is about entertainment and suspension of belief and this show is enjoyable enough to put that aside. Hey, watching the news lately, reality is even stranger than fiction.

Well done, CBC Gem! Looking forward to hopefully a third season.

Impressive web series

I start watching it on Jio Hotstar. After watching few scenes i found it very interesting web series. I was curious about life of Indians in Canada, it gives me good glimpse of it. It also gives glimpse of how Canadian police works. All incidents looks like real. I recommend for Indians/ Bhartiy ppl to watch it. Some other crime series I watched are very fast and unable to understand. This series gives us time to think and don't run too fast. No extra burden on head, just relax and watch. No fuss or huss. No extra dialogue, no extra flashback or over thinking. Its good to understand phsychology of criminals.

Insightful, delving, illuminating

One of the things I love about overseas productions is seeing how other people live, their cultures, perspectives, environments. I'm not Canadian but there are familiarities with my commonwealth country, enough to make comparisons. I'm a fan of restorative justice and was hooked line and sinker with those scenes. I appreciated the focus on minorities and their lived experience as it differs so much from mine. I'm deeply sad that it appears a white man is misusing his power, again, though it's a cliche it's still the truth. I just think the characters are excellent, though I'd like a bit more back story on Sabrina's fellow cadets. Bring on season 2...
