I saw the Death House Twitter account begging for people to give positive reviews for the movie, as according to them, the 'Trolls' have had a go at it. So i will give this an honest constructive. It is true amateur reviewers will often either give a movie an extreme rating, either 1 or a 10 . Neither of which is particularly helpful .
So i'll go through the positives and negatives of what i can contribute to the conversation .
What worked?
What didn't work
Ultimately this movie should have invested it's finances behind the camera rather than being so concerned with all the cameos , which ends up being really a waste of the actors time .
A real waste of an opportunity and concept . Although i don't like this typical internet behavior of it's either a 1 or a 10 . I think it's equally deplorable for a film company to essentially coerce the weak minded to giving overly favorable reviews.
What worked?
- It is fun to spot all the plethora of horror and B-movie actors , some of which only have a brief walk on performance.
- There is one truly stand out scene , where there is a bunch of skinless zombie like creatures, that does look really impressive effects wise.
- Kane Hodder is pretty good in this
What didn't work
- Too concerned with setting up a sequel with Tony Todd's character
- The cinematography is very poor. It's far too dark and under lit, making it impossible to see what is going on sometimes. I appreciate it's taking place in an underground prison, but you have to write your script and film it so people can see what is going on. Besides, no one is watching this for realism.
- With the exception of the scene mentioned above. The effects are very poor. Horrible green scree, poor cgi after effects and even other practical effects look bad
- The acting isn't good , our two lead protagonists are wooden, and even veteran actors like Dee Wallace turn in a poor performance. It seem like the director has done one take, and just accepted it.
- The biggest issue is the story and script . It is all over the place , it simply doesn't make a lick of sense from beginning to end . Right from the start where it's never fully explained who and why our two lead characters are and what they are doing there at the beginning of the movie, right up until the end with the quite frankly embarrassing 'Five evils ' scene. The narrative structure is so poor, confusing and convoluted
Ultimately this movie should have invested it's finances behind the camera rather than being so concerned with all the cameos , which ends up being really a waste of the actors time .

I love super bad horror movies. But not this bad. Sid Haig, Michael Berryman, Gunnar Hansen, Kane Hodder, Dee Wallace, Barbara Crampton, R.A Mihalov, Tony Todd, Bill Mosely.....wasn't enough to save this drivel. Saying it made zero sense is giving it too much credit. If you like lots of gore and boobies and 80's Moog synth sound F/X, then by all means...sit through this.

I really wanted to like this one, being a fan of all the horror legends it contained. It started off like it had a plot, but then the director said "Nevermind, I'll just do whatever.", and the movie collapsed in on itself.

Words fail me...
I'm a huge horror fan and love low budget, indie stuff just as much as mainstream movies but there is simply nothing positive to say about this catastrophic mess.
The premise is so simple and soooo enticing but the end result is just an incoherent disaster. How could ANYONE consider this to be a finished product?
It makes no sense, characters drift in and out, scenes appear out of sequence, nothing is ever explained ... it's just a cluster of epic proportions.
The actors themselves must have watched the final cut and wondered how the hell this came together.
I am horrified that I spent money on the DVD and you can be certain it's going straight into the bin now.

The reviews on here are a little odd... anyway, here is a real one.
This film blows.

Had to write a review after I saw the ones giving it a 10/10 - were they getting paid to write those reviews or what?! The story is practically non existent, we were left asking each other lots of questions about what actually went on at the end. What is the story?! I can deal with low budget, cheap looking movies if there's a story you can get behind, or good acting, but not here. So it looks bad, no story continuity, and the 2 mains (Courtney & Cody) were such bad actors. If I could give it zero stars I would... so I guess the one star I gave it is for using Eastern State Penn in Philly as a shooting location, that place is cool. My husband was excited to see the horror cast line up for this film, that's why he bought it the day it canevout, but even he feels it's a total let down. He agrees on the 1/10 rating but states his 1 star goes for the horror legends cast. Save your time and watch something else.

I don't know what's worse... the fact that this movie is an absolute mess or that I wanted to love it and it left me with blue balls. The lighting is awful, the editing was done by a blind and deaf person, and the ending makes zero sense. The only reason it got as many stars as it did was because they did manage to corral a lot of horror legends into one place.

Look, it isn't great. I expected a lot more considering the horror alumni cast. However, the other reviews suggest the movie is unwatchable, and that is not the case. The main issue with this movie is editing. It starts off a little slow but develops nicely

I was very excited to see this movies once I heard about it years ago. I know it went thru developmental hell but I had hope since I'm a huge horror fan and it has an allstar cast but unfortunately its One of the worst horror movies ever made they should've went with the original idea that Bruce Campbell created. Looks like it was made in a warehouse and filmed with a android phone camera. The gore is so cheesy its laughable. Dont waste your money you will regret it I wish somebody warned me about so you're welcome.

How could all those horror icons do this to themselves... If they needed money it would be less embarrassing to stand on a street corner begging for change...

I don't know what happened, i understand there were probably budgetary restrains and such, but damn, just damn. Everything came off badly, the acting, the lighting, the special effects, the plot and on.. worse of all, could perhaps be that ending, wtf was that?
I really hope this wasn't what Gunnar Hansen had in mind, when he came up with the idea originally? And why were some of those actors even in the cast, just so they would have more names to put in the credits? Because they did absolutely nothing at all in the movie.
Clearly B. Harrison Smith was overreaching, and had no right to try to make the Expendables of Horror, especially as only his third full feature movie. Maybe wait until you can actually direct, before trying something like this?

The people giving this a 10/10 clearly are by people who have not seen this before, I saw this at a convention and it was one of the worst films I've ever seen. That Cody Longo guy cannot act at all who's the one of the main characters.
The director clearly does not know what he's doing. The lighting is garbage and you can barely see anything, the director does not know how to build any sort of tension.
I wouldn't even suggest you renting this on Redbox. For the love of God please no one work with the director again it was embarrassing to watch. (I honestly was embarrassed that I was in a room watching a garbage film like this wasting my time)

What did I just watch? Was the film maker on crack? The story made no sense, the acting was horrible, the direction was a joke, etc. Avoid this garbage at all costs! Seriously, the people that put this out should be ashamed.

This movie was beyond disappointing. For all the hype, it was edited poorly, filmed poorly, directed poorly, and acted poorly. If you would like to see an amazing idea (someone referred to this as The Expendables of horror) executed in a way that should make these horror stars ashamed to have their names attached to it, then this movie is for you. Otherwise? Picture in your mind what this movie could have been. Even if you picture a dumpster fire, you'll be less disappointed than actually watching it.

Who did this? Who gave this the green light? I have seen some pretty horrible horror movies, but none have ever been this bad. This abomination is completely disrespectful to the genre and the horror actors that were in this. This was supposed to be Horrors version of the expendables, with all the awesome horror actors in it. What the hell happened?
The plot was horrible, the acting was horrible, the damn graphics were horrible. I actually sat through the whole thing, mainly because of Kane Hodder and Bill Moseley, I kept hoping it would get better. It didn't, it's completely disappointing. Don't waste your time watching this.

When I heard of this movie, I was very excited due the movie having all of my favorite horror movie icons and the trailer made the movie look better than it actually was. The script (IMO) did not explain any of the back stories of the characters, the script seemed to be a bland story and the story seemed to jump around a lot and was seemed to be written by a bored tenth grader. The graphic nature of the horror (Especially the half alive skeleton people in the cooler was a cool affect and the scream was very unnerving and probably the best part of the movie. I wish they did a back ground story on the half alive people.) is why I am scoring this a three. Without the graphic parts I would have given this a one. This movie would be ok for a time waster but nothing more. The crew could have done so much more with the story but did not. I think this should have been a mini-series instead of a movie where time could have been given for the background of the characters.

While others may call this movie the "Expendables of Horror", I consider it a silly and dark (figuratively and literally) love letter to the fans. If you want an obviously low-budget crossover with some of your favorite Horror movie actors in a ridiculous premise, you got it! Just remind yourself that this is low-budget so don't go in this film expecting something around the lines of 'Crimson Peak', in terms of scope or effects. This is a fun time for the Horror fans, no one else.

I mean where to start. Firstly the cinematography, the acting and the effects. This could of been so much more, Harrison Smith is clearly talented as i understand went through alot of struggles to get this film made. In the end it didnt make a whole lotta sense, plot holes throughout the main female lead acting like a cardboard cutout. I had high hopes because of the social media campaign but it failed to deliver on every level.
