DON't expect much

Plus points:
  • Very good-looking actors, ok use of sound
  • The film itself is a no-brainer, therefore, suitable for average audience looking for pure entertainment
Minus points:
  • Awkward interaction between characters as a family.

  • The acting is almost too obvious
  • Tee Yod regurgitates every element of a stereotypical horror movies, especially the overwhelming number of jump-scares. The film is generic as a result.

  • Weak scriptwriting - no intensification, easy problem-solving throughout which renders the film ending extremely frustrating.

  • Horrible visual effects
  • A lot of underdeveloped characters
  • The film fails to accentuate the power of the villain, thereby the devil seems to be an insane person rather than a transcendental entity.

Has creepy moments but, in all, a wasted opportunity

A family living in a farm is struck with supernatural occurrences which coincide with one member getting sick. The story's structure, like the other commenters said, is typical, even the personalities of some of the characters. That's not necessarily bad, but the film has to have strong details to make it unique from the others in the genre, not to mention cohesive storytelling--and that's where the film missed the mark.

Folk horror films rely heavily on the legend, and this legend has to be explained, especially if the film makers intend to screen it internationally. The legend of the antagonist on this film was just scratched on the surface, and the "rules" were sketchy. Too much exposition is bad but it should be enough for the viewers to understand how things really work. We didn't get that here. Maybe on the sequel?

From the first third of the film, there were already disconnects. There were reactions from characters that were out-of-place; sometimes they reacted too much considering what they only knew, sometimes they said things too early. It's like there were deleted scenes or maybe misplaced ones.

The acting in this film was mixed. One actor was great but there were some who I don't know if they just chose to act that way or the film makers told them to. One character looks overly concerned at times while one character was often nonchalant. I'm not sure if it was meant to be comedic but it made me laugh, I thought it was a horror-comedy film. That's a minus for the atmosphere.

There were also too many characters. That two-hour run time should have been used to flesh out the legend, give more time to the antagonist rather than give dialogue to characters that were hardly used.

The positive on this film is it had creepy moments scattered across those two hours. It had a nice opening scene, the antagonist was scary, the characters are likable, and early on I thought it had the potential to be like 2021's The Medium; however, the insufficient legend information, and the confusing storytelling and atmosphere made this film a wasted opportunity.

I should be giving this film a 6 if not for the big contradictory information it had. There were two contradicting statements made about a character. It's an important detail in the mystery so it's surprising it went unchecked. I'm hoping the sequel is better.

Horrible ... (good?)

No pun intended - calling a horror movie horrible should be a badge of honor, no? Of course if you watch this, you have to like horror movies - and if you like them, you may be aware of some of the cliches and the traps (story wise) a movie can fall on (or through).

This was quite visceral ... and it does have quite a few scenes that I thought would be "fake" (dream like) scenes ... that actually happened in the movie! I respect that - the effects are really good - though may be a bit too much for viewers who may be sensitive about these things. Know yourself and know your limits - there are way worse (or better?) movies when it comes to violence and blood - but this still has quite a few gruesome scenes.

What I did not know: there seems to be a sequel ... I reckon that makes sense .... I might even watch it, once it arrives at Netflix.

Thai Horror is more Hit than Miss...

I've become a huge fan of Thai horror. Anything Netflix puts out is more than likely a smash hit. They definitely put a lot of thought in time into this craft. I also like watching Thai horror and it's original Thai dialect that makes the movie so much better to watch. This particular movie was a hit for and I think everybody should watch it. It kind of reminded me of a Thailand version of the conjuring. The only difference is they add a lot more substance to their horror maybe it's because folklore and supernatural hits differently when it's shot in the fields of Thailand. We also don't know how much truth is drawn to produce these horror movies so for me that's a hit.

Formulaic

This is one first Thai films I have watched and I watched with English subtitles. These did not always translate well so I felt a little confused about what was happening at times and some of the jokes didn't really make sense when translated. I also found that the plot was very formulaic and it was difficult to understand what the characters motivations were. Some of the characters like the two brothers contributed nothing to the plot and just felt like they were there because they were in the original story. I still found it scary but I didn't think it brought anything new to the table in terms of the horror genre. Overall, good film but not amazing.

Feels more like a student project or a fan-made production

This movie lacks star quality. The production quality is poor, and the writing is off. While I don't mind a low budget-something common in many horror films-it is very obvious in this case.

The CGI and makeup were subpar, and the acting, particularly from the main character, was exaggerated and unrealistic. Both the audio and the score were lacking as well.

The storyline was typical of basic horror films; it wasn't scary, leaning more toward being a thriller. They attempted to set up for a sequel, but I doubt anyone would be excited for it. Overall, this film feels more like a student project or a fan-made production. I do not recommend it.

Incoherent mess

What a waste of time! The story in this movie definitely looks like it was written by a 12-year-old, who tried to impress his peers. As for a casual cinema-goer, I don't think anyone would enjoy this, let alone praise it. The horror is shallow, the jump scares are cheap and right in the face with no buildups, the dialogues are clumsy and without substance. The familiar love messages which scatter throughout runtime stick out like a sore thumb (you can definitely tell by the out-of-place happy score, which I was confused and weirded by). Some scenes are cut to the next without logical developments. It is extremely formulaic and full of cliché that I laughed the whole movie, mostly for the two hours I'll never get back. One of the few movies I want to leave half-way through. 2/10.

Works better as a double feature with the sequel

As another reviewer already mentioned, this movie feels a little like the Thai version of Evil Dead. The production value is obviously not as high, and I don't even want to compare the two. However, I had a decent time with this horror movie and thought it had a few genuinely well-crafted scares.

There are also lots of cheap jump scares, and the effects look a little poor at times, but it wasn't too distracting to the point of breaking immersion. The characters and dialogue were a little wonky at times, and the premise is nothing too original. However, the movie is crafted with passion and has a really dark atmosphere and provides some nice moments for fans of gore.

It ends with a big cliffhanger leading into the second part, which has already been released. Because of this, it works much better as a double feature, as the ending of this movie alone felt quite unsatisfying.

Overall, it's a decent horror movie from Thailand, and I enjoyed the majority of it, though I think the runtime could have been trimmed a little for a smoother narrative [5.9/10]

Urban looking actors chosen for very rural location movie. Cmon.

The movie is about a family in a remote village where they grow and sell shallots. The family members have just-out-of-the-salon hair and pretty stylish way of talking and walking. They no way looked like they belonged to that village. Yeah, good looks sell, but it must make some sense. Simply ridiculous. This just ruined the whole movie.

Chris hemsworth was in madmax, but the makeup, hairstyle everything made it look like he belonged there. The movie makers didnt even care to take any effort to match the look of the actors to the characters they played. So silly and pathetic. Besides that, the movie was ok.

The "death whispers" that make your heart race and leave you too afraid to even blink.

This film not only presents intense horror scenes but also incorporates elements of gore that truly sent shivers down my spine and made me feel genuinely scared. The storyline is engaging and full of unexpected twists that keep us on edge.

As a horror film, Death Whisperer does a solid job weaving its narrative. The exposition is delivered in a balanced way, ensuring the audience doesn't get lost or confused throughout the film. The plot is captivating, and with numerous twists and turns, it becomes difficult to predict how the story will unfold by the end.

The film features several good-looking characters, likely chosen to portray the six main children in the story. This casting decision seems to have been made to boost the film's appeal, and it appears to have worked. Thai model Nadech Kugimiya, known from The Con-Heartist (2020), plays Yak in the film. Technically, what stands out is the score, which heightens the creepy atmosphere and maintains a constant sense of tension throughout. The death whispers, a central feature of the film, are especially chilling.

However, in certain scenes, the score can be a bit overpowering, though it's still understandable. The jump scares are effective and manage to surprise the audience, feeling natural rather than forced.

Solid on horror, shallow on character

Death Whisperer is a middle-grade Eastern Horror movie that combines possession with Thailand's culture. A few Direction bad choices aside, this movie delivers a solid horror story, albeit with shallow character development - classic horror entry at its best.

The story follows a huge family in Thailand that starts believing that one of their young members is being possessed by a demon. The lack of a protagonist reference on this sentence is not a coincidence, and perhaps is the major flaw in this otherwise interesting Thai horror.

For some reason, Director Taweewat Wantha didn't see a problem with not focusing on one particular character and developing it to its core. Throughout the story, we seemingly mostly follow character Yard, the oldest sister - middle sister of a family with 6 children -, while the story is really developing character Yak, the oldest brother.

Yak came back home after his deployment in the Army, a long deployment that left a stain on his relationship with his father and brothers. As the oldest brother, his father expected that he would follow his steps and provide for the family; his brothers expected that he would care for the family. To top this off, Yak seems to have a drinking problem, and is also a hot-headed piece.

Yak is the protagonist, but the story seems to put Yard in the spotlight more than it should. Yard is the naive middle sister that is trying to make everyone's life better, forgetting about her own wants. Her development is weak compared to Yak's need to redeem with his family, but even his arc does not grow enough.

The acting is alright for the most part and for most actors and actresses. Won't get them an Oscar. Except Rattanawadee Wongtong; she did a great job.

The plot development is nothing new in the horror genre, possession subgenre: someone shows behavior changes hinting at supernatural, others dismiss fact at first, then believe when stakes escalate. Death Whisperer uses the same formula as always but combined with Thai mythos, which is pretty nice.

There are some inconsistencies, though. As Yak gets a secondary treatment, subplots do not resolve in satisfying ways. The relationship between Yak and his father, or with his siblings. Yak's drinking problem. These subplots come and go unfinished, for the most part.

With no accurate information about the budget that this film had, speculation suggests that the CGI reflects a low budget. CGI is noticeable in scenes where it takes effect, and the Director could compensate by going fully practical - it worked alright for the witch.

The story culminates in an ending that leaves room for a sequel, which was confirmed right away and, in fact, is set to release on 10 October 2024. Watching the sequel is a must for full closure on the story.

Death Whisperer delivers for casual horror fans and cult-seekers of horrors from other Cinema Houses. It has a cool mix of Thailand culture with horror, a recurrent trait on Eastern Horror. Watch it with the full understanding that Yak is the protagonist, and you will find entertainment in this flick. Get passed some flaws, and you have yourself an alright horror movie - more of the same, but why complain.

Khan Review- funny family

I totally agree with the ghost that the family is funny and she enjoyed possessing one from them. This was first Thai movie with subtitles, it was ok to certain extent with few little scary moments but over all it is below average. The highlight was the actor playing eldest son very handsome well this makes ine feels thai men are good looking he did his job well and i feel he too knows he is very handsome with those dimples and he carries attitude well. The script is poor few scenes are very irritating like the father even after witnessing everything is bothered about his bamboo tree or the mother who seeing her daughter being possessed acting like emotional fool and few other scenes. Over all its ok if you have time to pass.

Great Horror Story!!!!

I love it!!!! The story starts out slow, but when it does pick up, it paces very nicely. The few scares are great and it a great mind bending film. The only gripe i have is the darkness, sometimes it hard to see, and i miss it a few times.

The actors and actress are very convincing, especially the lead actress. I wish the backstory could be well flesh out, and certain side characters can have more role to play.

Overall if your looking for a good horror movie to get scared, this is the movie. The early portion pacing could be faster, got bored in the first 20mins as there is no rhyme or reason, should have built a better background as to understand what is going on.

This movie literally made my head hurt due to stress because it was so bad, and we really hated it.

This movie literally made my head hurt due to stress because it was so bad, and we really hated it. Many parts of the story lacks proper and good build up. Most parts are just dragging. Thus, you will be surprised that some parts happened without even any connection to the other parts of the story. Also, you will not feel the perfect amount of fear, sadness and attachment to some parts of the movie and even to characters because of the lack of build up. There was also some unnecessary flexing of muscles that seemed to me as an attempt to makeup for the lack of quality in the story. We fast forwarded the movie because we realized it was not worth watching and easily understood the movie. Obviously, nothing good happened in the story. The characters were even dumber than normal dumb characters in horror movies. Some actors also didn't do a great job in their acting. If you are just bored and have so much time to waste, you can waste your time by watching this because you can only expect nothing good from this.

This is not a Thai horror movie

Not scary at all. Not at all.

Most Thai horror/ scary movies are either scary as hell or scary and fun at the same time.

This one is not scary nor hilarious.

The only good thing about this movie is the main actor because he is handsome and cute.

The storyline is plain, the acting is normal to low, the plot is predictable. The sound effect is too loud and I have to adjust the volume constantly which is very annoying but not scary.

No visual effect pretty much.

The ghost is a girl with smoky makeup. The possessed one just talks through a voice transformer. The ghost group is just a group of teenagers flying. The blood is so fake.

Not scary, but creepy and satisfying. Tee Yod~~~

Enjoyed it, very much so that it wasn't scary to be suspenseful. I love the scary movies, I'm afraid of ghosts, but the mind wants to fight them and find out, and we don't expect them to be this gruesome. The story is an excellent story, for me, midway through to the end, there's hardly any time to catch a breath from a ghost, because ghosts are present most of the time, and ghosts are incredibly distracting to keep you confused. Although I was somewhat disappointed in the story, which could have been told a little more in depth. As of now, it's not quite as detailed yet, + the movie goes on formula. A ghost movie that can only guess what will happen next, and some elements don't seem entirely natural.

I liked the lore but...

When the background score aggressively dictates the mood and tonality of a horror movie, it usually signifies weakness in its visual storytelling, especially when the said composition depends too much on meaningless exaggeration rather than desired subtlety.

'Death Whisperer' from Thailand is one such example.

I liked the lore and the way it found its place in the tale, but I didn't like the manner in which it was handled.

I feel it could have been something special if only the director understood his assignment better and had a clearer vision on how to take this concept to the next level.

But alas! That didn't happen!

The screenplay has pacing issues, the characters lack depth, and above all, there's barely any emotional pull. I could have disregarded the technical inefficiencies, but how can I ignore incompetence in the writing?

Evil dead vibe in Asian horror

The eldest brother have strong vibe from Ash (the evil dead franchise)

  • long jaw
  • Active and humorous attitude
  • that f**k it and fight back spirit
  • Saw off shot gun
  • decapitated ghost

I see so many resemblance of evil dead in this which is good. I am really forwarding for sequel.

Good Thai horror are rare these days. Asian horror trying hard to scare people with cheap CGI and jump scare.

Thai horror are great back in the days but since 2010 they are going to the wrong direction. But I regain my trust after watching the Medium.

Overall, Love this film, especially with the atmosphere , setting and sound system.

Boring and pointless...

While I had indeed never heard about the 2023 Thai horror movie "Tee Yod" (aka "Death Whisperer"), of course I sat down to watch it here in 2025, as I had the opportunity to do so. After all, it was a movie that combined two of my horror and Asian cinema.

However, I ended up tossing the towel in the ring and giving up 77 minutes into the 120 minute runtime. Why? Out of sheer and utter boredom. Talk about a boring storyline and one that utterly failed to entertain me. It was an insanely bland and pointless storyline that writers Thammanan Chulaboriruk ad Sorarat Jirabovornwisut had managed to conjure up. I didn't care one bit about neither the contents of the story, nor of the characters in the movie.

I was not familiar with the actors and actresses on the cast list in the movie, and that was actually something that spoke in favor of the movie, as I enjoy watching new and unfamiliar talents on the screen. I will say that the acting performances in the movie were good, but measured up against the pointless narrative, then they just stood a snowballs chance in Hell of succeeding.

Visually, the movie was okay. It wasn't a movie that made use of a whole lot of special effects. But the effects that were in the movie definitely were okay.

If you enjoy Asian horror movies, then there are far, far better movies readily available out there, both Thai and other Asian horror. I would not suggest that you waste 120 minutes on watching "Tee Yod", as it just simply isn't worth the effort.

I am not particularly stoked about sitting down to watch the 2024 sequel, though I will do so, as I want to give it a fair chance. But if it is anything like this first movie, then it will be a snoozefest of grand proportions.

I am not, however, ever returning to attempt finish watching this 2023 movie, as it simply was a swing and a miss of a horror movie.

My rating of director Taweewat Wantha's 2023 movie "Tee Yod" lands on a three out of ten stars.

It is quite satisfying, as my goddaughter would say...

After the older brother returns to his hometown, he must find a way to save his younger sister from a bizarre disease that is causing her to behave differently. When a remote village is plagued by a deadly curse, one brother must fight to save his family from a terrifying supernatural threat.

I watched it with my 10-year-old goddaughter, who, like me, loves horror movies with ghosts and witches. This is another good Thai horror production. It has a few flaws, such as some dialogues and sequences, but it is enjoyable to enjoy. A close-knit family, a possessed little girl, the legend of the Whispering Witch. It is quite satisfying, as my goddaughter would say...

It was fun

The gore was a little too gross and too much. I was super confused because nothing fully makes sense. The scary face on the cover was what drew me in, and i'll admit I had a good couple of jump scares. Still, I liked the movie but had to put down my food while watching it. The acting was okay and the script was cheesy but I still liked the story because I was invested and wanted to know how the movie ended. The older brother was only in the show as a sex icon but it was fun laughing at the random shirtless scene and the way he always had to cuff his shirts to show off his muscles. Wouldn't watch again, but would recommend.
