Netflix's new gritty crime series with a John Wick-like premise tops the global streaming charts one week after its release. Following one man's desire for revenge after his puppy was fatally harmed, the Keanu Reeves-led film kickstarted a franchise, followed by three more sequels as the conflicts intensified between the titular assassin and the crime world he once swore to serve. Recently, Reeves returned to the world of John Wick in the Ana de Armas-led Ballerina that sees a new assassin embark on a journey of revenge.

Netflix’s new action thriller outing is showing no mercy with critics. Ever since Keanu Reeves first demonstrated his affinity for headshots and brutal revenge in the first John Wick, new movies in the genre have been trying to live up to the legacy of Baba Yaga. And it seems that Netflix has finally done just that, if the Rotten Tomatoes rating for the streamer’s new action series is any indication.
Following a former gangster and expert enforcer, the series delivers all the brutal and bloody action that fans of the genre could possibly want as our antihero returns to the fray (and brings his trusty baseball with him) after the mysterious death of his brother. The series is titled Mercy for None, and critics have been heaping praise on the action thriller series, which has now debuted with a rare perfect score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

When it was first released in 2014, John Wick was an entirely new type of action movie. While it initially appeared to be a standard but original thriller, it quickly proved to be anything but. With Keanu Reeves showcasing his unique gun-fu fighting style, the franchise drew in enthralled audiences by building on its unique lore and exceptional fight choreography. Across five movies, including the recent spinoff From the World of John Wick: Ballerina, it has earned over $1 billion at the worldwide box office.
While the most recent mainline John Wick movie implied that Wick would not return, John Wick: Chapter 5 has been confirmed and is in active development. Reeves will be working alongside director and creator Chad Stahelski again, as the two add another story to Wick's tragic life. It is coming after two major spinoffs were already released, including Ballerina and the TV miniseries, The Continental. As Chapter 5 remains in development,...

Gi-jun’s path of vengeance always had a fixed, definite end, and as Mercy for None concludes its saga with the seventh and final episode, the tragic conclusion shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. Previously, Geum-son became Juwoon group leader after betraying his father, whereas Yeong-do killed Ju-woon and framed Gi-jun for his murder. However, Gi-jun was able to escape with his life thanks to Seong-won helping him out, while Geum-son turns against Yeong-do after learning that he murdered his father. With the stage set for an all-out conflict, the finale is as bloody and emotional as fans would have expected. The build-up through six episodes was great, to say the least, and the payoff couldn’t have been better.

Mercy For None has a complicated plot that doesn’t always make sense if you’re not paying attention. But really, it’s all about the gore and violence. However, there’s so much of it it’s hard to remember who died and how. So here we’re hoping to list down all the gory deaths, the important ones, of course, to help you connect the dots that you may be missing. While the show is all about the action and gore, the killing isn’t really mind blowing or anything too hard to handle. It’s mostly knives (and other sharp objects) with guns showing up on occasion. The show certainly lives up to its name, and you might find more entries on this list than on the obituary page of your daily newspaper. Despite the bleakness of the show, it’s still wildly entertaining because of the way the action plays out.

So far in Mercy For None, deaths in crime families have been a trigger point that ends up causing a domino effect to change the landscape of the Seoul underworld—and Gi-jun inevitably plays a central role in that. Seung-won’s death broke up Beomyeongdong, Nam Gi-seok’s death saw Gi-jun running a gauntlet through half of the city’s crooks, and now that Jun-mo, heir to the Bongsan group, has died at the hands of Gi-jun, things were inevitably going to get a lot worse real soon. As expected, the fifth episode highlights a major shift in the state of order, involving gang war, betrayal, shifting alliances, and, most importantly, major revelations regarding Gi-seok’s past actions.

Gi-jun has decided to turn to a path of vengeance to seek justice for his brother, and the fourth episode of Mercy For None shows how serious he really is about not letting anything stand in between him and his bloody revenge. Gi-jun moves like an emissary of death, relentless, inevitable, and out of mercy, as his hunt for Jun-mo finally comes to an end. On the other hand, Bong-san comes closer to the truth regarding Gi-seok’s death, but whether that actually amounts to anything remains to be seen.

Korean star So Ji-sub returns with another incredible series after headlining shows like Doctor Lawyer, Phantom, My Secret Terrius, and more. He will star as the lead in Netflix’s upcoming series Mercy for None. The series is a John Wick-esque action thriller, which sees Ji-sub play an ex-criminal who gets back into the underworld after a tragedy.

Asian gangland sagas have a distinct flavor of their own; the way the majority of these stories balance the rawness of violence with steady build-up, emotional pull, and palpable tension at times feels unmatchable. Adapted from the Korean webcomic Gwangjang, Netflix’s latest Korean crime thriller series, Mercy For None, serves as the perfect example of such narratives—at least that’s what it seems from the first episode of the series. Revolving around a former gangster who is forced out of retirement in the wake of a personal tragedy, the first episode of Mercy for None is thoroughly entertaining despite being conventional in its approach.

Mercy For None is not your average revenge tale. It is grittier and set in a world where mercy simply doesn’t exist. It has it all: twisted alliances, underground politics, and a storm of betrayals coming your way, served with a cold dish of revenge.
Based on the popular webtoon Plaza Wars: Mercy For None by O Se-hyung and Kim Gyun-tae, this new drama blends gang warfare with raw emotion and a splash of mystery. The script is penned by Yoo Ki-seong, and with So Ji-sub making his grand comeback in the lead, expectations are sky-high.

Netflix’s Mercy For None is an action-thriller that isn’t mysterious or shocking, really, in terms of what it presents to us in terms of plot. But this is not to say that the gore won’t shock you, depending on how much you can take. The show follows Gi-Jun, a man desperate to find the person who ordered his brother’s death. But this is not all; he believes that if he doesn’t put an end to the whole ordeal of this gang warfare, he won’t be satisfied. Mercy For None gives us a bleak ending, where nobody comes out truly victorious, because when it comes to revenge, everybody is on the losing end. The series’ plot is a complicated loop of mysteries. For the most part, we’re introduced to people only because they’re going to end up dead at some point in the near future.

The ending of Mercy For None is quite mellow in comparison to the rest of the show, but if you expected there to be any survivors, you’ll be heavily disappointed. This is a revenge show in which the protagonist does not care about surviving. He only cares about getting the guys who killed his little brother. Additionally, he’s a man with literally nothing left to lose. The only person he ever cared about was his brother, and with him gone, he’s got no inhibitions. In Mercy For None, there are two main gangs, Juwoon and Bongsan, named after the founding members of both gangs. They each have sons who secretly want to take over their dads’ organizations. Well, Jun-Mo, not so secretly. But the events of the drama begin when Jun-Mo targets Gi-Seok, Gi-Jun’s brother (because he humiliated him in front of his subordinates). While Gi-Seok does end up dead,...

Netflix’s Friday K-drama of the week is an action-thriller centered around a deranged man ready to kill anyone who comes in his way because he’s been struck by recent tragedy: the murder of his younger brother. Gangly warfare and murderous assassins are all you need to get excited about before watching this show. I know, it sounds super familiar. But somehow Mercy For None manages to deliver an incredibly niche twisty tale, despite having an unexciting and cookie-cutter plot we’ve seen a million times before. There’s only so much one can do with revenge, but this show becomes convoluted because it isn’t just the handful of protagonist-esque characters who are betrayed or betray people, it’s almost the entire character list. If they’re a named character, it’s like they’ve got some sort of twist lined up. In truth, this can get a bit annoying,...

Netflix is adding just 11 new shows for the first week of June. That may seem like a light schedule, but that's coming on the heels of a massive 30 new titles on the first of the month. It's never advertised itself as the home of the classics. The Criterion Channel, it ain't. But they're taking a small step toward resolving that by adding six of Alfred Hitchcock's classic films to kick off the month.
Okay, to be honest, they're adding five of his classics and a spare. We'll get to those in a bit. You can also catch some modern classics influenced by the Master of Suspense. Don't worry, fam, there's plenty of lighter fare arriving on the first as well. After all, movies about murder, kidnapping, and the end of the world aren't the best for the kiddies.
And all that arrives before the regular slate for the week.
