This is a very interesting movie that seemed to be billed as a comedy, but is really more of a drama with moments of dark comedy here and there. It explores male friendship is a unique and complex manner by presenting two young guys who are dependent on each other in ways they're not even aware of. What makes their friendship more disturbing is the implication that they've been unwittingly harming each other emotionally since they were little kids. The central question of the movie is whether or not they will be able to break out of their toxic patterns. This is territory usually reserved for relationship movies between men and women, which makes it unusual and refreshing for a movie about male friendship. The two lead actors give strong performances and the film is beautifully composed for such an obviously low-budget affair. The story never takes the easy or cliché route, and while it may not have the Hollywood ending you're expecting, it resonated with me long after I finished watching.
i was surfing around for a comedy and this one came up on time warner. i liked it a lot more than i thought i would. never seen a person from the cast, never heard of the director, but thought it was solid. the humor was funny, the drama was dramatic. that's how you want your movies, right? to hit in the right places? my only issues were i thought the female characters could have been better written and that the reason for why the two "worst friends" were ever friends in the first place was not particularly clear. maybe it was not supposed to be, maybe it was supposed to be more of an artsy, ambiguous thing, but it didn't work for me because i kept want to understand what was at the root of it. why even bother with each other if all they do is cause grief? but that one issue did not take away from what was ultimately a pretty good movie with good acting and funny moments.
Downloaded it tonight, liked it a lot. There's some laughs, there's some tears, all-around good flick. Basically a guy is hit by an incoming ice cream truck and when his low-life dad skips town, his friend from growing up has to nurse him back to health. To say they don't get along is under-selling it. They pretty much hate each other from the start, which was one of the things I didn't fully understand, but I guess there are just some people like that in life. The main character will remind you of everyone you loved to hate growing up. You know that sound Jim Carrey makes as the most annoying sound in the world in Dumb and Dumber? That's this guy for pretty much the entire movie, but it's that way for a reason, you'll see. 7/10
The entire movie pretty much takes place in an apartment. Script is very surface level, doesn't dive too much into how the two main characters got to this point in their lives or why they treated each other so poorly. Poorly acted. The two main characters don't have the chops to sell the scenes or make it believable that they actually liked each other at one point in there lives. Chalamet in first scene and last scene as flashbacks with little to no dialogue.

this one surprised the hell out of me. it has toilet humor like a seth rogan movie and suburban relationship angst (and new jersey settings) like a todd solondz movie. it treads that line between sentimental and dead pan. the movie itself is rough around the edges to be sure but it gets at some depressing, sad truth about growing up and losing friendships that don't grow up with along with us. most of those rogan and apatow movies are about two dudes learning to love each other more and "bro out." this is one that is more real and takes a look at a friendship with a different sort of destiny. certain parts could have used a bit more to them like the love interest where not much is done, but what wasn't there is left to the imagination and sometimes that works. here is that very time.
