Bro's Before Ho's

‘Krazy House’ Trailer: Nothing Can Save the Studio Audience in Nick Frost’s Edgy Horror Sitcom
Image
In her “Krazy House” review for IndieWire, critic Katie Rife described writer/directors Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil’s absurdist Dutch horror comedy as testing “the limits of taste.”

With its hyper-violent style and blasphemous dark humor, the latest feature from the filmmakers behind “New Kids Turbo” and “Bros Before Hos” also inspired Rife to write that their movie was “like an Adult Swim infomercial directed by black-metal teenagers.” That’s a point of pride in the outrageous project’s equally unapologetic first trailer — which debuted exclusively with IndieWire after “Krazy House” made its divisive world premiere at Sundance in January.

The first look above includes quotes from our site’s critical review and others to spectacularly cheeky self-endorsement. Decidedly not for everyone, this sitcom deconstruction quickly gained a reputation for its gonzo shock value and outright mocking of Christianity. It later screened at International Film Festival Rotterdam,...

‘Krazy House’ Review: A Sick and Twisted Sitcom Spoof That Overstays Its Welcome
Image
Remember that scene in Natural Born Killers in which the Juliette Lewis character enters a Married… with Children-style sitcom, with Rodney Dangerfield playing her dad? Imagine a whole movie based on that concept, add tons of violence and gore — not to mention gags about Christ and Catholicism, a tray-full of crystal meth and, in one late sequence, a dog that gets decapitated by a shotgun blast — and you’ll get an idea of what’s in store while watching the Sundance Midnight selection, Krazy House.

As over-the-top as that already sounds, the film is even more exhausting to sit through — like a hard-r Saturday Night Live sketch that’s been taken way too far, to the point you’re just hoping that it stops. Relentless and off-putting, the English-language debut of Dutch hitmakers Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil is unlikely to land a wide audience in the U.

‘Krazy House’ Review: This Gonzo Sitcom Tests the Limits of Taste and Patience
Image
The definition of satire is flexible, but not quite flexible enough to accommodate “Krazy House.” This bloody, anarchic hand grenade of a film is just straight-up blasphemous, opening with a brushed-aluminum shot of a cop plugging a nun full of bullets and escalating from there. Like an Adult Swim infomercial directed by black-metal teenagers, the latest feature from Dutch comedy duo Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil takes sneering pleasure in giving the middle finger to God in hyper-violent, absurdist fashion.

The Adult Swim bit is baked into the premise of the movie, which takes place entirely within the confines of a sound stage reminiscent of the set from “Married…With Children.” The sitcom-within-the-film is called, naturally, “Krazy House.” It revolves around the Christian family, which is composed of standard-issue archetypes: bucktoothed bumbler Bernie (Nick Frost); his wife Eva (Alicia Silverstone), who’s naturally way out of his league...

Krazy House: Everything We Know About The Nick Frost, Alicia Silverstone Dark Comedy
Image
The Dutch comedy duo of Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil have a new project heading our way -- and it stars some pretty recognizable faces. Nick Frost has been tapped to lead the pair's first English-language feature, which is already gaining some pretty intense buzz. In a statement to Variety, Haars and van der Kuil said, "It's a dream come true working with this amazing, talented cast on our most insane movie yet." That's one hell of a claim considering these are the folks who made the cocktail of absurdity and vulgarity known as "Ron Goossens, Low Budget Stuntman."

Frost also spoke with Variety and said, "'Krazy House' has been a completely bonkers project to be a part of and I've absolutely loved every minute of it." This is also certainly quite a claim, as Nick Frost is somewhat synonymous with wild, wacky, and wonderful comedy films.

Nick Frost, Alicia Silverstone, Kevin Connolly to Star in Dark Comedy ‘Krazy House’
Image
Nick Frost, Alicia Silverstone and Kevin Connolly will star in the dark comedy “Krazy House” from writers-directors Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil, marking the first English-language film by the duo.

Dutch Gaite Jansen, Walt Klink, Jan Bijvoet, Chris Peters and Matti Stooker round out the cast. Production on the film has just been completed in Amsterdam.

Set in the 90s, “Krazy House” is about religious homemaker Bernie (Frost) and his sitcom family. When Russian workers in Bernie’s house turn out to be wanted criminals, they make Bernie and his family tear the place up in search of some old hidden loot. In order to free himself, Bernie has to man up and save his imprisoned family, while slowly going crazy.

Maarten Swart will produce the film for Kaap Holland Film, in a co-production with Haars and van der Kuil. Kaap Holland Film’s Jorn Baars and XYZ...

Berlin: Alicia Silverstone, Nick Frost, Kevin Connolly Join Dark Comedy ‘Krazy House’
Image
Alicia Silverstone — whose latest feature Perpetrator is having its world premiere in the Berlinale — has just shot another film over the German border.

The Clueless star joined Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead) and Kevin Connolly (Entourage) in the newly-announced dark comedy Krazy House, which recently wrapped production in Amsterdam. The feature marks the first English-language film from Dutch writer-director duo Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil (New Kids Turbo, Bro’s Before Ho’s, Ron Goossens: Low-Budget Stuntman), with Kaap Holland Film producing.

Set in the 1990s, Krazy House follows religious homemaker Bernie (Frost) and his sitcom family. When Russian workers in Bernie’s house turn out to be wanted criminals, they make Bernie and his family tear the place up in search of some old hidden loot. In order to free himself, Bernie has to man up and save his imprisoned family, while slowly going crazy.

The Trailer For ‘Foursome,’ YouTube Red’s Latest Original Series, Has Arrived
One month after premiering its inaguural fleet of original shows, YouTube Red is maintaining a speedy momentum.

The first new series from its second wave of original content offerings -- a half-hour comedy entitled Foursome starring Jenn McAllister and Logan Paul -- will premiere on March 30. While squarely aimed at teens, the six-episode series from AwesomenessTV has a decidedly racy vibe -- at least as evidenced by its sex-centric teaser trailer released today.

While Dance Camp, YouTube Red’s first original feature film from AwesomenessTV, looked to be a rather wholesome love story that blossoms at -- where else? -- a summer dance camp, in Foursome, McAllister is desperate to hook up. However, she’s blocked at every turn by her overprotective older brother, played by Paul. “Bros before hos, except I’ll never be a ho because of my bro,” McAllister deadpans in the trailer. “I’m gonna die a virgin.

Popoz: New Kid Huub Smit Stars In The Dutch Cop Comedy
You could call Dutch cop comedy Popoz a regional response to the Jump Street films and not be too far off, though I have a hunch you'd be selling it just a touch short by doing so. Directed by Martijn Smits and Erwin van den Eshof - the duo responsible for Dutch zombie comedy Zombibi - the feature is expanded out from the duo's Comedy Central television series of the same name which ran for a six episode series in 2013 with a standalone special following in 2014. Former New Kids and Bros Before Hos star Huub Smit takes one of the lead roles along with Sergio Hasselbaink and Noel Deelen in a cop comedy that tends towards the sort of broad, slapstick humor that...

Check it out: #LookingForPatrick #LookingForAgustin #LookingForDom

Oh and look, a teaser trailer for season 2!

- Speaking of HBO (1), they’re going ahead on the provocatively titled series Bros Before Hos which centers on a queer black man and well, his brothers. Flip van der Kuil Drunkenly Reviews Flip van der Kuil And Steffen Haars' Bros Before Hos
Shit, the guy sitting next to me is now drained. I think he's an Italian or something. He has as much as I drank half a bottle of vodka, but he's really bad. His eyes closed. Vodka was really tasty. I do not drink vodka often, but it was really tasty. This was indeed the dullest room I've ever been in. Viewing the previous two days ago, was really fat. Everyone was really twofold. That was really fat. Not now. I do not know what to write now. Oja a review of my own film. Steffen is really a fag. He sits next to me and looks at me and try to direct me. He can get the cancer. Bros before hos, what an oily...

Check Out the Pilot Presentation for the Lena Waithe/Anthony Hemingway Project ‘Bros Before Hos'
In March, I introduced you all to a new project created by Benjamin Cory Jones (ABC Family’s "Chasing Life"), entitled, “Bros Before Hos”. The pilot presentation tells the story of 3 brothers of color - 2 straight and 1 gay, and their wickedly crazy life and romance issues. The teaser trailer went online a few weeks ago and garnered a lot of attention. Now the full pilot presentation is available to view today! What caught my attention most about the project was that it captures the quirky, nuanced side of black men that we don’t see too often in media. The kick-ass producing team includes Jones, Lena Waithe ("Dear White People"), and Mark Taylor....

Final Trailer For Bro's Before Ho's Is Rude. Rude I Say!
Steffen Haars and Flip van der Kuil are probably best known as the directors of New Kids Turbo and New Kids Nitro, as well as being two of the actual New Kids themselves. But that was then: the New Kids have hung their mullets in the willows, and this is now. And this December, we get a new film from Steffen and Flip, outside of the chaotic universe of the New Kids: Bro's Before Ho's. We've already published some stills and a teaser in the past, but today Eyeworks published the final trailer, and here it is. Steffen and Flip have proven in the past that their talents are not so much in the originality of their jokes, but in their expertise in comedic timing...
