A teenager from Moscow, Styopa, flunks the history exam, and as punishment, his parents send him to his grandmother's village. Running away from the locals, Styopa accidentally falls into a well and ends up in a Cossack village in 1612 during an attack on it by the Crimean Tatars. The teenager is mistaken for a spy and thrown into a pit.

Nazar tries to inflict violence on Styopa, but he is saved by the daughter of the chieftain Alyonka. The chieftain decides to give the teenager for "upbringing" in the family of the Cossack Churila. Meanwhile, Styopa wants to return to his own time and is trying to earn money so that the bricklayer Lukyan can restore the destroyed well.

Styopa learns the Cossack craft and tries to complete the well. At this time, the dwarf Irgay reports that the neighboring village has again encroached on their harvest. Styopa suggests solving the problem not by war, but by sports and teaches Cossacks football.

Styopa tells the Cossacks that he found the Crimeans who kidnapped Govor, but the Cossacks with a hangover are not able to go camping. Styopa, with the help of modern anti-hopping procedures, quickly brings the Cossacks to their senses and organizes a campaign against the Crimeans.

Because of Styopa, his direct ancestor yesaul Govor is in danger, and, therefore, the entire family of Styopa. Ataman Markov announces the wedding of his daughter Alyonka with the Cossack Nazar.

Styopa and his friends find esaul Govor in captivity by the Poles, who are preparing to hang him. Nazar manages to convince everyone that Styopa is a Polish spy, and he is in danger again, but now from the Cossacks themselves.

Styopa is trying to disrupt Alyonka's wedding with Nazar, he has proof that there is a Polish spy among the Cossacks. Styopa and his friends will have to go through a series of tests to become a real Cossack and get the right to go to the battle for Moscow.

Styopa and Alyonka go after the Cossack detachment. On the battlefield, Styopa meets Nazar in a decisive battle.
