It's just okay

Lazarus doesn't really do anything unique or mind-blowing. Like his previous works, the protagonist on a wild goose chase in search of something. In this case, he's in search of a doctor who holds the only cure for a medicine that will eventually kill everyone who took it ever. The premise is actually pretty tame, realistic, and contained compared to other Watanabe's works. The characters aren't really standouts, even the protagonist. I would say it's worth the watch if you like his other works Cowboy Bebop, Space Dandy, Samurai Champloo but Lazarus honestly falls short of all of these titles by far. The dubbing also isn't good and breaks the gloomy vibe. I'd suggest the sub if you really want to not break immersion because sometimes the English VA is just...bad. The soundtrack, as per usual from Watanabe, delivers. The score during most scenes helps enhance the gloomy aesthetic that it's going for. Not a bad work by any means but it's not a must watch either.

International man-hunt spy story with dynamic combat sequences. Pretty bland and forgettable plot.

"LAZARUS" is set in the future, where the NSA "hired" a group of talented and skilled people, in order to track down Skinner, the creator of a drug that once taken does not let you fall sick. However, this pill contains a toxin that will cause the death of anyone that ingested it. The only person that has the vaccine is the doctor that disappeared. Hence, an international manhunt starts against time, in order to obtain the cure before humanity is completely wiped out. The premises are simple and straight-forward. All the different missions involving the task force are set in different parts of the world. There are episodes set in more exotic locations such as Turkey or Pakistan, but also in cold and inhospitable environments like Antarctica, adding a lot of variation.

The series shines especially on the action sequences, which are dynamic and overall well directed. We can see shootouts and bare hand fights accompanied by energetic electronic or jazz music. Watanabe did a good job with Axel that has the most compelling combats, thanks to his acrobatic abilities and the capacity of always finding a way to escape the most deadly situations. Overall all the characters have their own peculiarities and personalities, and even if they all fall into well defined tropes, they all have something unique that make this group engaging. Every single member of Lazarus served a specific purpose and actively contributed to progress the investigation, complementing each other. My favourite characters were Christine and Doug. The first is the perfect balance of a sensual and skilled agent that manages multiple times to trick others into giving out crucial intel, while the latter is practically the critical brain of the group that handles all the logistics.

On the other hand, I have to say that the plot overall feels lazy and uninspired. Certain dynamics are very predictable. The screenwriter played it safe, but this also means that there is very little on this TV show that stands out. It seems to watch the umpteenth spy story involving yet another global crisis. We have plenty of those and there are productions that made it way better than "LAZARUS". What saved the show were the characters that, as I mentioned before, have some unique peculiarities. Moreover the ending felt rushed and quite disappointing, with everything explained in the very last minutes of the 13th episode. All the efforts to create an international web of conspiracies and subterfuges was ruined by the fact that the story needed to be wrapped as quickly as possible. Clearly the series required a few more episodes to go full circle, maybe even a full second season, especially considering that the episodes do not even last 30 minutes. My final rate is 6.5.

Promising

An interesting series from which I expect a lot in terms of animation and entertainment.

Firstly, because the technical team is of high quality and it's a MAPPA production.

Although the first 2 episodes are easy to watch, the series doesn't escape the flaws of current productions:
  • A basic scenario if you're a fan of Japanese animation that's afraid of going too far.

  • a main character who's impossible to stop (prison, technology, policeman...) but a girl comes along! We know where this illogic comes from...
  • a bunch of kids more intelligent than the population as a whole...
Given the media hype, I hope the anime will have the guts to take off beyond the usual mediocrity of series with an American touch.

To be continued...

Awful voice acting is not easy to ignore.

Within seconds of watching the first episode, the abysmal voice acting was apparent, and not just from one or two characters but across the board. It's very obvious that they did not give the English voice casting an adequate budget. What's shocking about this is the fact that this series was created by the same guy responsible for Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, two of the best voice acted anime series ever created, but this show has bad voice acting even for an average anime.

Aside from that, Lazarus is extremely derivative and has a boring/generic setting. The whole premise of the show (so far, anyway) seems like it was thought up in a matter of minutes. It honestly feels like Watanabe is just kinda over making anime, and this was something he did simply because a really good offer came along.

Definitely don't go into this series expecting something on par with the likes of Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo. It's nowhere even close to that level of overall quality or artistic vision.

A LOVE LETTER FROM COWBOY BEBOP

The animation is beautiful from the studio mappa. The story revolves around a future drug which can cure any diseases from this world. But after couple of years later the creator of drug comes out and tells the world they have less then 30 days to live but if they find a cure in that time they will be saved. So a group of organisers from government has well has criminal gangs try to find the doctor responsible for creating this drug in first place but he himself is hidden somewhere unknown dead or alive. Only first episode is released. But a group called Lazarus is trying to find him and recruit a criminal to find him. Love the direction from John wick director.

ONE OF THE MOST IMPRESSIVE EPISODES I'VE EVER SEEN

To be honest, this has to be one of the most visually stunning anime episodes i've ever seen. Shinichiro Watanabe is one of the best anime directors and we could see why he has that reputation.

The story is intriguing, the characters are all well designed and interesting, and the animation is greatly executed with the nonstop action sequences, and of course the ost, and music, has to be one of the main protagonist of a Watanabe creation, so overall, just one episode, but is promising as hell, and one serious candidate to anime of the year. And yes, i'm not overrating.

Watanabe and Stahelski make a fantastic work together, making this one of the most beautifully action animes we could ever imagined. I'm really waiting for more of this story, which i didn't even get into this review, but it's fantastic as well. Long live to this productions.

Completely mixed bag

Cool concept, great music, solid animation, but the writing is abominable. Some of the worst dialogue ever recorded for animation. Characters are just inscrutable with near-incoherent motivations. Even when they explain their choices and motives, which is what they spend most their time talking about, the logic is flimsy at best.

I kept watching just to hear more from Kamasi, Bonobo, and Floating Points and to see if the story would ever make sense. There are moments, but way too few. The payoffs have weak setups, sometimes none at all. Sometime a plot line seems to set up something but goes nowhere.

Bottom line: almost all style, minimal substance.

Just the skin of Cowboy Bebop

The premise could be interesting, but the execution is too bland. The story feels very empty and simply asks you to accept its implausibility. It's basically a protagonist on the run, ridiculously "escaping" from prison with a generic action, just filling in the blanks without any sense of danger or interest.

It's written by someone who doesn't know how a drug comes to market, what scientists do, or how to make a prison feel real.

I'm starting to think this is done with an artificial intelligence calculated to satisfy the algorithm needed to sell a "cool" anime. Just one episode and drop it.

THIS IS GREAT.

I'm loving this show man the concept ,the story ,the lore they are giving little by little ,the animation, the sound design and the action is great too it's grounded but it's good you know and also they have given some thoughts on world building it's looking good man and the vibe of the show is really cool the character's are likeable you know the main character has some mystery to it and the side character are interesting too i wanna see them how they all come together as a team looking forward to it.

So yeah if you wanna watch something good ,something new it's for you.

And i don't know why people are not liking the show, i mean i get the not liking part you know everyone has different taste but just fully hating the show not justify.

Great concept ruined

I was so intrigued at first with the concept of the show. But within minutes it was ruined with inappropriate music, ridiculous characters, and terrible writing. As others have already said, it seems like a pathetic attempt to go after a Cowboy BeBop vibe without putting in the necessary work. I can't believe that they thought the approach that they took would make sense given the premise of the show. I'm halfway through the second episode in writing this. I'll keep watching in hope it gets better - i know that paid off with Pantheon, so maybe they'll turn it around. If it does, I'll come back and update my rating.

Update, on episode 7, has it gotten any better?? Nope, worse. Don't know why I keep watching except for the fact that the story concept remains a good one. The execution still continues to suck.

Last entry, last episode, still sucks. What a terrible show. I kept hoping it might redeem itself but not even close.

Mind Blowing [100% Should Watch]

Tbh, I don't understand why Lazarus is stuck between 7-8 points. The story and events in this very underrated anime is very good. Each character is carefully prepared and has an adventure that draws you in. When you watch it, you can see the unique characteristics of the characters. It's not a hero and a villain, it's more like a battle between two good guys. I have very high expectations from Lazarus. I hope the anime continues in the best way possible. And the thing is anime is so good it makes you want to go to a adventure makes you wish that it was real and you were part of the lazarus team.

Was anime always this bad...?

I watched anime when I was in middle school and I put this on every Saturday night, and.... it's terrible. It feels like a poor man's attempt at writing a Call of Duty campaign (replace Makarov with Skinner) but it's so weeb-ish.

Every episode is essentially -mission briefing -villain of the week that's somehow connected to the big bad (just like Call of Duty) -2d flat character making 2d flat jokes -the choppiest fight scenes ever -villain of the week losing for being a misogynist and giving info that leads to the next mission.

It's like when you go to anime move in theater and all the nerds laugh at unfunny jokes, this is what watching this feels like.

I was more of an Outlaw Star than Cowboy Bebop fan anyway.

I would give it a 5, but I like Eleina.

Edit I'm watching the cult episode. Holy Jesus.... It's like the writers watched "Top 10 scary cults" vid on YouTube and wrote characters based on it.

It's like someone gave the writers the cult episode from the simpsons family guy South Park and king of the hill and told them to give their own modern take on it.

Except there's no modern take and they somehow made the the take more flat and outdated then something from the 90s and a cartoon.

Not bad, but nothing compared to cowboy bepop

It was a good show that explored similar themes of loneliness, much like Cowboy Bebop. The animation was solid-Mappa, as always, delivered incredible work. However, I felt the story lacked depth. While the characters' backstories were touched on, there were still many unanswered questions, and I didn't really connect with any of the characters, not even Axel. Given that Cowboy Bebop had twice the number of episodes, that's understandable. I wouldn't call this a bad anime, but I wouldn't say it's a great one either. If you're after action, good animation, a strong soundtrack, and themes similar to Cowboy Bebop, you might enjoy it. I hope that if there's a season 2, we'll see stronger character development.

Dull International action adventure, gets better towards the end

I finally finished Lazarus today after watching Episodes 12 and 13, pleased to say it ended beautifully. One of the coolest, satisfying anime endings you'll see in recent days.

While the premise of tasking a young but able crew to find a an ingenious scientist that holds the cure to his own fatal creation which has doomed humanity in 30 days seems an intriguing premise, the lack of style one would expect from a Shinichiro Watanabe anime (as he has somewhat proven with his previous anime animated at MAPPA "terror in resonance" in 2013), makes for a dull lackluster first half of the show, since he chose the story over visual uniqueness.

The melee combat action was good but at times felt like an add-on to the focus of the show. The choice of music in most scenes was really good, especially to note is the synthesizer music used at end of Episode 7 "Almost Blue" which was soo foreboding and heartrending.... Also noteworthy is the international locations the cast visits especially Islamabad!

The girls Christine, Eleina were very pretty, cute and hot but the main character, Axel, drives the badass action of the show and his faceoffs in the last episodes with a rival were enjoyable.

Its not the most mind-blowing TV show around but it was worth watching and you definitely will want to stay to see this "find me before time runs out" story play out. 11:45am 1.7.2025

*SPOILER FOR EPISODE 13* I feel sad for Dr. Skinner he really was a kind old homeless man till the end... And everything made sense when they revealed what happened to him at the airport. Mrs. Hersch crying for him was so pretty, she really did love him. And the music waning down and Axel laying on the couch in the barber shop with the cat... That was one of the most poignant, hearttouching, coolest anime endings I've ever seen 😭 11:02am 1.7.2025.

"The Lazarus" (Season 1, 2025, 7.4 out of 10)

"The Lazarus" (Season 1, 2025, 7.4 out of 10) is a visually striking animated project directed by Shinichiro Watanabe. The series is a cyberpunk action thriller set in a grim yet technologically advanced world of 2052, where scientist develop a drug capable of curing any disease - and, predictably, things go wrong.

The show's biggest strength lies in its visuals. The imagery is stylish and captivating, featuring dynamic action scenes, a bold neon color palette, and sharply choreographed fight sequences. The music, contributed by Flying Lotus, Kamasi Washington, and Floating Points, blends modern jazz with unsettling electronic tones, heightening the show's atmosphere of paranoia and impending disaster.

The plot, however, is less consistent. While the initial episodes are engaging, the pacing falters mid-season, and some character motivations feel underdeveloped. Although the character designs are memorable, their inner struggles are only superficially explored. This becomes especially noticeable in the dialogue, which at times feels too formulaic for a story with philosophical undertones.

Nevertheless, the series stands out as a visually and musically original entry in the cyberpunk action genre. It carries a strong directorial voice, even if the script doesn't always match that ambition.

Bottom line: "The Lazarus" is a show with a powerful atmosphere and distinctive style that will primarily appeal to fans of visual and musical storytelling. While its narrative may not always deliver, it's a worthy experiment within the genre.

10/10 INTELLIGENCE=UNDERSTANDING

This show is beautifully portrayed from episode one it immediately builds curiosity within the first 5 mins of the plot being everyone will die within a month, Axel being our main character intrigues me very early on in the episode our first scene with him being a prison break. The show incorporates real life elements like stalks and pharmaceutical companies its very much so like common side effects but more action and in an anime people often try to compare it to cowboy bebop but just because its made by the same creator does not mean its aiming for the same effect they're two completely different shows and concepts. This show is amazing the plot is great pacing is good for the first ep people often try to rush it but seriously have the attention spans of a goldfish in this day and age if you enjoy good mystery and action with a little bit of jazz I believe you can enjoy this show remember its an art not a jester to entertain this show is meant to be taken slow its not bad pacing your just rushing greatness.

Worth Watching If You Love Cowboy Bebop

Lazarus has a bold sci-fi concept, slick animation, and stylish action that reminds me of classics like Cowboy Bebop. The atmosphere is mature, the music fits the tone well, and the English dub is surprisingly strong. While a few scenes feel rushed or don't land emotionally, the overall presentation kept me hooked. The pacing builds mystery without revealing too much too soon. It explores deep questions about technology, humanity, and survival without being too heavy. The retro-modern visual style gives it a unique feel that anime fans will appreciate. It may not reach legendary status, but it's still a refreshing and thought-provoking ride. I gave it 7/10.

Interesting concept, terrible execution

This show is written bad. I understand the intentions of the writer, as well as the traditional anime tropes that are sort of a must have. But none of these will ever excuse poor storytelling. If your starting premise is that the world ends in 30 days unless a certain somebody is found, and that this is public knowledge, you cannot expect for me to buy that everybody in the world goes on like business as usual and they are not stressed that there is a ticking clock over their heads. Nobody in this show has any sense of urgency. Something important needs to be done? Ok, we just delegate it to some no name schmuck because normally it would be his job to do it, so he will do it now too, even if right now this task is mission critical. The world is ending, but sure, let's do some power plays as a B plot line, because covering up something is more important than canceling the apocalypse. Never mind how the clues used for the main plot line are only working as clues because the writer wanted them to. And let us not dwell into the characters decision making process and the lack of any sense of it. And the final big reveal has a mile long plot hole in it.

For a show that really wants to be a study of human nature it sure as hell has no clue about it. Worst show of 2025.

From the creators of Cowboy Bebop

Lazarus (2025-) is a new Japanese anime show from Shinichiro Watanabe, the creator of Cowboy Bebop (1998-1999). It took me a while to watch this shows, but I got around to watching it and this anime was awesome.

Positives for Lazarus (2025-): When I heard this show was from the creator of Cowboy Bebop (1998-1999), I knew it was going to be awesome and it delivered on all of my expectations. The opening intro for the show is awesome and it is done in the style of Cowboy Bebop. I like the premise of this group of people trying to find a guy named Skinner to help them prevent the deaths of millions of people who took a drug years ago. I like the cast of characters and their dynamic with one another was fun to watch while they're on their mission. The animation looks spectacular and it is similar to Cowboy Bebop. The show is paced well with each episode and it kept me invested in the story. I like the countdown aspect of this show where each episode ends with a line of text that tells us how many days are left before tragedy occurs. And finally, I like how the show ends in a definitive way that concludes the story of this show while also leaving a little opening for possible future seasons.

Overall, Lazarus (2025-) is an awesome anime from the great Shinichiro Watanabe and it is destined to be a future instant classic in the history of Japanese anime.

Push through the voice acting 🙏🏽

Lazarus is one of those anime that doesn't quite hit it out of the park, but it certainly has enough to keep you interested, especially if you're willing to push through its weaker moments. The premise itself is intriguing and rich with potential, set in a dystopian future where the lines between humanity and technology blur in fascinating ways. It's a world where life is far from ordinary, and the concept of resurrecting the dead with advanced technology immediately grabs your attention.

The animation in Lazarus is nothing short of stunning. The fluidity of the action scenes, combined with the intricate designs of the futuristic world, creates a visually immersive experience. The attention to detail is impressive, and the use of lighting and color throughout really enhances the atmosphere, making every scene feel dynamic and full of life-even when the story takes a darker turn.

However, where the anime stumbles is in its voice acting. For some reason, the performances feel largely flat and unconvincing, which is a bit of a shame given the high-quality visuals. The characters, especially the main ones, should have felt more alive, but the voice acting doesn't always match the intensity or depth of the moments they're supposed to convey. It's not that the actors are necessarily bad, but rather that the voice direction seems off, leading to performances that don't quite land emotionally.

Another element that weighs the show down is the script. While the premise is solid, the dialogue often feels forced and sometimes awkward, which doesn't do justice to the more intense or emotional moments. Some of the character interactions and plot beats could have been stronger with sharper writing. That being said, it's not all bad-there are still moments where the dialogue hits the mark and adds depth to the characters, but they're few and far between.

Despite these issues, Lazarus is far from a lost cause. If you can push past the occasional cringy line or lackluster voice acting, you'll find an anime that's quite enjoyable overall. The world-building, animation, and soundtrack are top-tier, and the story has enough of an interesting hook to keep you invested. It's a series that benefits from patience, and while it may not be a masterpiece, it certainly offers a unique experience worth sticking with.

So, if you're a fan of futuristic dystopias with gorgeous visuals and a great score, give it a shot. Just be ready to endure some rough patches with the voice acting and dialogue, but don't let that stop you from enjoying a surprisingly decent anime overall.

Hard to believe...

...this comes from Watanabe Shirow, because it lacks everything that made Cowboy Bebop so damned good.

The characters in Lazarus are two-dimensional, with nothing remotely interesting about them. They're boring, predictable, lazy, and stereotyped/clichèd. The dialog is pedantic, and the English dub is excruciatingly stilted and painfully slow. The storyline is just virtue-signaling scolding nonsense (I watch anime to be preached to? Who knew? Not me). And then there's the antagonist who has a completely contradictory agenda: everyone's to blame, so I'm going to kill everyone, except no I'm not, because if you can find me everyone will live. Huh?

The entire first episode has 15 minutes of parkour because...? I don't know either. But I do know it got really stale after the first five minutes.

A good start...

There's something almost unexplainably captivating about this show. From a top-down view, the show's writing is absolutely excellent, but it gets bogged down by middle of the row dialogue (translation might've affected this) and rushed pace. Despite this, the show completely won me over.

The action is dynamic and creative, the tone was absolutely crushed, the characters won me over, and I felt connected to the story by the end of the season.

While the exciting action sequences and amazing score carried at points, it was ultimately the tone that converted me to the story. The feeling of encroaching dread was tragic because of the death of the world but it felt like that was the least of the world's problems.

Each episode pointed out how the world was slowly being consumed by fear, war, and desire for power. By the end, I didn't know if the characters would even choose to stop their fate. But our main cast exemplifies what Watanabe feels we should be. People from worlds apart but brought together to bring this dying earth back to life.

There's is something so earnest and genuine about that desire and I love it. I really hope that there is a season two, because I would be first in line to watch.

(Here's hoping it gets a 26 episode run instead of 13 and gets a really solid dialogue pass.)
