As the Cannes Film Festival 2025 wraps up, a cinematic tradition lives on: the unveiling of Y.M.Cinema’s Cannes Camera Chart. Based on IndieWire’s excellent cinematography survey (Cannes 2025: IndieWire’s Survey), this year’s data paints a clear picture — or rather, a clear frame — of where the world’s most prestigious filmmakers are heading. The verdict? Arri still dominates, Super 35 rules, and the Arri Alexa 35 is the new monarch of the Croisette. Gone are the days of equal footing between large format and Super 35. If Cannes 2024 hinted at a return to tradition, Cannes 2025 shouts it from the rooftops: Super 35 isn’t just back — it’s dominant.
Cannes 2025- Camera Manufacturers Chart A New King: Arri Alexa 35 Dethrones the Mini
In our previous analysis, we observed a gradual transition in Arri’s dominance: the once-reigning Arri Alexa Mini was still holding strong even into Cannes 2024, though the seeds of change were sown.

There are certain companies known for producing and/or distributing horror content that consistently push the boundaries of the genre. Studios like A24, Neon, and IFC have developed loyal followings by backing films that range from mainstream thrill rides to daring, experimental nightmares. Whether it's a low-budget indie gem or a genre-defying spectacle, these companies have earned their place as reliable names for horror fans chasing their next jolt of fear.
At the beginning of this year, Neon kicked off its 2025 horror slate with a brand-new title releasing in theaters. New Jersey is on the rise.
For years, the state had let opportunity slip through its fingers when it came to film and TV production after Gov. Chris Christie suspended the state’s Film and Digital Media Tax Credit Program in 2010. But in 2018, his successor, Phil Murphy, reinstated the credit, offering up to 30% of eligible expenses and up to 35% in certain more remote areas; over time he expanded the money available, offered incentives for productions meeting diversity criteria and locked in the program through 2039 to provide stability for content producers.
Last year, the revitalization continued when the New Jersey Motion Picture and Television Commission named Jon Crowley executive director. Crowley spent decades in the television industry and has been an elected official in his New Jersey hometown.

While the Max rebrand back to HBO Max has the streaming world in a tizzy, it’s worth remembering the significance of keeping diverse subscriptions. While “Hacks” and “The Last of Us” wrap up over on that side of your library, the Hulu and Disney bundle is essential for maximizing this summer’s offerings.
Disney+ continues to be the go-to streamer for family friendly viewing options; this month, they’ll add the official “Frozen” Broadway musical to that library, along with Marvel’s “Ironheart,” about Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) who was introduced in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
Hulu has everything you need for an “Alien” movie marathon, all to gear up for FX’s “Alien: Earth” which premieres in August. You could also do a “Mamma Mia!” marathon or “Bachelor” binge — we’re not here to judge.
Top Pick: “The Bear” Season 4 (Available on Hulu)

Steven Soderbergh was frustrated by the underwhelming box office performance of his latest film, “Black Bag,” and he is concerned that its poor earnings could represent a dark sign for Hollywood’s future.
When “Black Bag” hit theaters in March, the film received widespread praise and emerged as one of the most well-reviewed films of the year. Its critical success did not translate financially, though. The film grossed just over $38 million at the worldwide box office, falling short of its reported $50 million budget.
“It was frustrating. The people we needed to come out didn’t come out. And unfortunately, it’s impossible to really know why,” Soderbergh told Business Insider Monday about the spy thriller‘s financial performance. “My concern is that the rest of the industry looks at that result and just goes, ‘This is why we don’t make movies in that budget range for that audience because they don’t show up.

Exclusive: Steven Soderbergh is out to the town with an untitled feature doc, centered on the final interview of John Lennon, multiple sources tell Deadline.
This is the first doc in many years for Soderbergh, who released And Everything Is Going Fine — on the life of multi-hyphenate artist Spalding Gray — through Sundance Selects in 2010. We’re told Soderbergh is in production now, and the search for a distributor is on, with the film to be completed by end of year.
EPs on the project include Soderbergh, Michael Sugar and David Hillman of Sugar23, and Nancy Saslow and David Hudson of Mishpookah Entertainment Group.
Lennon’s final in-depth interview took place alongside wife and creative collaborator Yoko Ono on the fateful day of December 8, 1980 — the only radio interview granted around the release of their album, Double Fantasy. That afternoon, the pair met a team of three from Rko Radio at their Dakota apartment.

Academy Award-winning Steven Soderbergh recently reflected on his latest project, the buzzy and well-reviewed espionage thriller Black Bag, lamenting the dissonance between its critical success versus its lackluster draw at the box office.
The prolific filmmaker sat down with The Independent to discuss his disappointment and disillusionment with the waning attendance at theaters, seeing it as a negative harbinger for the entertainment industry.
“This is the kind of film I made my career on,” he began. “And if a mid-level budget, star-driven movie can’t seem to get people over the age of 25 years old to come out to theaters — if that’s truly a dead zone — then that’s not a good thing for movies. What’s gonna happen to the person behind me who wants to make this kind of film?”

Ever since his debut feature “sex, lies, and videotape” established him as a major director in 1989, Steven Soderbergh has been preoccupied with the secrets people keep and the lies they tell — both to others and themselves. It’s been a recurring theme in everything from heist films to true stories utilizing a variety of tones and styles and idiosyncratic comedies.
After 36 years of filmmaking and over 30 features, you might think Soderbergh has said everything he has to say on the subject. He’s now back with “Black Bag,” a spy thriller that might be his smartest and most beautifully directed meditation on secrets, lies, and betrayal to date — it’s certainly one of his most entertaining. Folks, I'm going to be the one person brave enough to say it: 2025 has not exactly been great so far. I won't get into all the reasons why (have you checked your 401k lately?), but even narrowing the aperture to only the world of movies, things have been pretty rough out there. A majority of the big studio films have been disappointments, and the box office was struggling mightily until "A Minecraft Movie" came along. There have been a few highlights -- I loved "The Ballad of Wallis Island," for example, and I really enjoyed Steven Soderbergh's one-two punch of "Presence" and "Black Bag" -- but the first few months of the year weren't exactly filled with non-stop bangers.

Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired North American rights to Studiocanal’s sci-fi comedy “Cold Storage.” The filmmakers have unveiled a first look.
The film toplines “Stranger Things” breakout Joe Keery alongside “Barbarian” standout Georgina Campbell and “Smile” star Sosie Bacon. The cast also includes screen veterans Vanessa Redgrave (“Mission: Impossible”), Lesley Manville (“Phantom Thread”) and Liam Neeson (“Taken”).
Jonny Campbell, whose credits include “Dracula,” directs from a screenplay by Hollywood veteran David Koepp, adapting from his own novel. Koepp’s scripting resume includes blockbusters “Jurassic Park,” “Mission: Impossible” and more recently, “Presence.” Gavin Polone, known for “Zombieland” and “Panic Room,” produces alongside Koepp.
The film follows Teacake (Keery) and Naomi (Campbell), two employees at a self-storage facility built atop a former military base, whose night shift transforms into a nightmare when a government-sealed parasitic fungus escapes from the underground levels. As temperatures rise, the microorganism unleashes its brain-controlling, body-bursting mayhem on anything in its path.

It’s rare to see a movie like “Black Bag” (2025), where every moment feels vital. Not a scene, an acting decision, or a dialogue feels wasted in this spy thriller, which is inherently about the game of truth, lies, and deception. The information revealed can mean something as devastating as the information concealed. While staying economical with its creative choices, the film leaves us no room to look away. It expects our attention every moment, but it deserves it just as much. Despite its rather cold approach to exposition, this sleek thriller ends up being one of the most charming romance dramas in the recent past. So much happens so fast that it might be hard to register. Find everything, including the ending, explained here.

Having failed to meet Universal's standards, the spy thriller Black Bag will reportedly be given a digital release in a few days, less than a month after it debuted theatrically around the world. Directed by the prolific Steven Soderbergh, Black Bag has under-performed at the box office and stands little chance of recovering its reported production budget theatrically. It will, however, continue to make money once it lands on PVOD platforms. A couple of years ago, Universal and Focus Features witnessed the resurgence of Robert Eggers' The Northman on digital, after the historical epic delivered lukewarm results at the box office.
With $18 million domestically and another $12 million from overseas markets, Black Bag's cumulative global haul now stands at $31 million. Certain movie directors — Hitchcock and Tarantino come to mind — constitute a genre unto themselves. Steven Soderbergh was never like that, at least not until he started making his “little” films: the cleverly plotted low-budget indie palate cleansers that he got into the habit of directing in between his more deluxe features. He did it as a way to recharge his batteries, and to remind himself that moviemaking is supposed to be fun.

This article contains spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again Episodes 5 & 6.
Daredevil: Born Again just broke from convention and dropped two new episodes on Disney+. While previous live-action MCU series have had two episode premieres, including Daredevil: Born Again, and some, like Agatha All Along, aired two-episode finales, none have aired two episodes back to back in the middle of the run. The fifth episode hinted at a potential MCU team-up that nobody could have expected: Daredevil and Ms. Marvel.
Daredevil is no stranger to teaming up with other heroes, as Matt Murdock previously joined Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist in The Defenders, and this season of Daredevil: Born Again has already shown Matt Murdock reuniting with Frank Castle / The Punisher. Fans even hope to see Daredevil and Spider-Man share the screen after their alter egos were seen together in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Matt Murdock even appeared in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law,...

It’s ironic that the release of Netflix’s The Electric State coincided with the theatrical debut of Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag. Films like The Electric State — poorly received mega-budget tent poles starring A-listers — usually inspire complaints about the lack of studio-led original films that are released theatrically. But Black Bag fits the bill, and yet, not enough people showed up to support it in cinemas. The espionage thriller had a disappointing debut last week and is still struggling to recover its reported production budget. Black Bag will soon be released on PVOD, which suggests that Universal always intended for it to appeal to audiences at home.
In cases like this, a film’s theatrical run is primarily used as a publicity tool for its eventual PVOD release. Black Bag has generated around $15 million domestically so far, and another $9 million from overseas markets, for a cumulative global haul of $24 million.

Sex, lies, and… shock comedy? In a new interview, filmmaker Steven Soderbergh details his outrageous comedy film that never was. The “Presence” and “Black Bag” director told Men’s Health that he had a “frustrating” experience trying to get a script greenlit that was akin to “Team America” and “Blazing Saddles” in terms of being a “completely batshit crazy” story.
“I had this shock comedy that I was trying to get made that nobody wanted to touch. That was frustrating,” Soderbergh said. “It’s hard to describe, but it was deliberately outrageous and provocative. And all the people that read it that could potentially pay for it, whether it be companies or wealthy individuals, said, ‘This is too hot.’ So, that was a bummer.”
He continued, “I was really interested in making something that was like a full-on comedy, like ‘Blazing Saddles.’ Not a subtle comedy. That still appeals to...

A new spy movie starring Michael Fassbender and Pierce Brosnan has pulled off a box office feat. Fassbender is a versatile actor who is perhaps best known for playing the young Magneto in the X-Men prequel movies beginning with 2011's First Class. However, in addition to starring in big-budget genre movies such as the superhero franchise, Assassin's Creed, and Prometheus, he has starred in a variety of dramas such as Shame, A Dangerous Method, Song to Song, Steve Jobs and 12 Years a Slave, the latter two of which earned him Oscar nominations.
While Pierce Brosnan does not have any Oscar nominations under his belt, he does have ample experience in the spy genre, having starred in four James Bond movies between 1995 and 2002. He played the iconic superspy in GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, and Die Another Day, stepping into the role after the two-movie tenure...

Jack Quaid has understandably gathered a lot of attention lately within the film and television world. From his performance as Hughie Campbell in The Boys to his most recent role as Nathan Caine in the newly released film, Novocaine,it is clear that Quaid possesses a talent and charm that entertains audiences. Additionally, within the past five years, Quaid has attached himself to a variety of large projects, including the Scream franchise and Companion. Given his recent successes, it is no surprise that some of his worth-the-watch movies have gotten lost in his expansive filmography.
One of these films is Logan Lucky, a 2017 heist comedy directed by Steven Soderbergh (Ocean's Eleven). The film is packed with stars, including Channing Tatum, Adam Driver, Daniel Craig, Hilary Swank, and many more. With a 92% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, it is clear that Logan Lucky is just as enthralling as other films in which Quaid has appeared.

Ready to get “Together?”
The film, which premiered earlier this year in the midnight section of the Sundance Film Festival, places real-life couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie in a body-horror scenario. It has brand-new teaser trailer out Wednesday, which you can watch below (if you dare).
Written and directed by Australian filmmaker Michael Shanks and produced by Brie and Franco, among others, the movie was a sensation when it premiered at Sundance and kicked off a bidding war, with A24, Apple TV+ and Focus Features among the potential distributors. Ultimately, Neon won the worldwide distribution rights to the film for a whopping $17 million. It was the first major sale at this year’s sleepy Sundance and made the movie even buzzier.
The trailer doesn’t give much away, but the film is said to be a gooey metaphor for codependency, which you can totally get. The official synopsis reads: “Years into their relationship,...

Thanks to his two new releases this year — the horror film Presence and the recently released espionage thriller Black Bag — the prolific Steven Soderbergh has overtaken the legendary Martin Scorsese on the list of the highest-grossing filmmakers in global box office history. The irony is that both Presence and Black Bag under-performed at the box office, one more resoundingly than the other. Incidentally, even Scorsese's last film, the mega-budget Killers of the Flower Moon, failed to meet commercial expectations.

It seems releasing two films (“Presence” and “Black Bag”), wrapping production on another (“The Christophers”), and writing a book on the making of “Jaws” isn’t enough to keep Steven Soderbergh busy. Speaking in a recent interview with Variety, Soderbergh shared that he and “Contagion” screenwriter Scott Z. Burns have discussed putting together a sequel to their 2011 public health thriller, and the subject of microplastics struck a chord.
“There’s certainly a case to be made, especially in the West, for the long-term effects, environmentally, of what we eat, what we breathe. As is well known, we have plastic in our blood now. It’s in our brains,” said Soderbergh. “This is a new thing that’s got to have a pretty serious effect. There’s lots of possibilities.”
“Contagion” features an all-star cast that includes Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Laurence Fishburne, Marion Cotillard, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Elliott Gould.

Director Steven Soderbergh's second film of the year, the espionage thriller Black Bag, debuted this Friday to exceptionally positive reviews. It landed in theaters only a few weeks after Soderbergh's other 2025 release, the innovative horror film Presence. Starring Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett in the lead roles, Black Bag is an exercise in cinematic style, like most of Soderbergh's recent output. The movie is aiming for modest box office returns this weekend, as it competes for eyeballs against fellow new release Novocaine, starring Jack Quaid.

Warning: Spoilers follow for Black BagThere’s maybe no filmmaker working today as prolific as Steven Soderbergh. Ever since breaking out in 1989 with the great Sex, Lies and Videotape, he’s maintained a consistent output (barring a short-lived "retirement" in the early 2010s), making a career out of throwing everything at the wall and seeing what sticks. And especially since he returned from retirement, he shows no signs of slowing down, sometimes releasing two or three films a year while constantly experimenting with genre, cinematography, and editing.
Indeed, even this early in 2025, he’s delivered two movies in a three-month period. Steven Soderbergh almost didn’t make “Black Bag.”
When he and “Jurassic Park” writer David Koepp first began collaborating, Koepp brought Soderbergh a handful of ideas. One of those was “Black Bag.” Soderbergh didn’t spark to the concept, instead choosing to focus on “Presence,” a ghost story that premiered at Sundance in 2024 and was released by Neon earlier this year.
Soderbergh said that he still encouraged Koepp to write it. “It was more of a case of, Dude, just write it. My immediate interest was more in seeing him get it done than it being something that I could then direct,” Soderbergh told TheWrap during a wide-ranging interview that touched on everything from the making of “Black Bag” to the difficulty of getting adult dramas in theaters to why he’s not directing the next “Ocean’s” movie.

Just two months ago, Steven Soderbergh and writer David Koepp graced us with their take on the supernatural ghost story with Presence, a “horror” film of sorts that took a unique look at the genre that felt distinctly like a Soderbergh film. Now, Soderbergh and Koepp have reunited for another fascinating dive into genre with Black Bag, the director’s take on the spy thriller, which also manages to feel like Soderbergh trying new things he’s never attempted in an already impressive career, but doing so with a distinct style, tone, and vibe that fits right into his larger oeuvre of work.

Steven Soderbergh is a director who is always keeping busy, having directed at least one film a year for the past ten years. The Logan Lucky director haunted audiences earlier this year with his film Presence, showcasing his mastery of various genres. Now, Soderbergh is shifting gears again, this time with the spy thriller film Black Bag. The movie centers on Kathryn St. Jean (Cate Blanchett) and George Woodhouse (Michael Fassbender), a wife and husband with ties to a national intelligence agency. Boundaries are important in any relationship, much less a till-death-do-us-part union in which both parties are spies involved in highly classified operations for a British intelligence agency. Steven Soderbergh and David Koepp get it. They understand the need for a little space between the personal and the professional when the fate of the world is at stake. Which is why the director and screenwriter of Black Bag have devised an easy one-stop-shop solution for the couple at the center of their espionage thriller.

At this point, Steven Soderbergh has released so many films that we’ve likely run out of creative quips about how many films he makes. His most passionate disciples would tout this as a victory, a demonstration of his versatility as an innovative mind always on the hunt to add a new genre or technique to his toolbox; his most dedicated detractors would argue that the director’s output far favors quantity over quality, as demonstrated by a fair few (mostly recent) examples of films whose development seems to have started and ended with the questions “Can I make this? And if so, how quickly?” (Three guesses as to which camp I call home.)

Lady in the Lake.It is not quite right to call a point-of-view shot “subjective.”1 As Jean Mitry observes, there is an essential tension in the spectator’s relationship to a filmic point of view: “At the movies I am both in this action and outside it, in this space and outside this space. Having the gift of ubiquity, I am everywhere and nowhere.”2 If subjectivity designates an individual’s embodied movement through the world—structured by goals, obstacles, detours, means—then point-of-view shots only highlight the disjunction between seeing through someone else’s eyes and walking in their shoes. Lady in the Lake (1947) was partly conceived with this equivalence in mind, advertised in trailers as a “revolutionary innovation in film technique,” starring Robert Montgomery and “You!” But if anything, this sustained experiment with a camera that purports to collapse viewer and character only accentuates the gap between a point...

Based on Soderbergh’s personal experiences, ‘Presence’ promises a unique and immersive ghost story that explores the intricacies of the human psyche. Ghost stories have always intrigued humanity. Whether it is an urban legend such as La Llorona that terrifies children across all throughout the entire Mexican country or the deified spirits that were the Cihuateteo in Aztec Mythology. Every culture in human history had its belief in some sort of afterlife, and therefore, its belief in those who were not able to go to the afterlife being stuck in our realm to the end of times. From the famed ‘Ghostbusters’ franchise to the classic horror film ‘The Shining’. The ghost genre has seen many interpretations and evolutions across the years. Yet, as the genre rose in popularity, the plots and storylines began to feel somewhat repetitive and “cliché”, with a slight few sliding away from the established norm. Director Steven Soderbergh and screenwriter David Koepp again deliver greatness with Black Bag, a crisp spy thriller and whodunit that will keep you guessing until the very end. Their second feature of the new year, after the creepy Presence, and third collaboration overall (including 2022's Kimi), boasts an all-star cast in a twisting odyssey of murder, betrayal, and lust. Black Bag skillfully avoids lame genre clichés by keeping the narrative taut and firmly grounded in realism. There are no overblown action scenes, silly gadgets, macho heroics, or slinky femme fatales here.
The opening scene introduces George Woodhouse (Michael Fassbender), a senior British intelligence officer, at a roaring London nightclub. He clandestinely meets Meacham (Gustaf Skarsgård), a colleague assigned with a specific task. Meacham confirms that a top-secret program has indeed been stolen from the government. He hands George a list of five possible suspects with the clearance, aptitude, and opportunity to commit the crime.

George Woodhouse (Michael Fassbender) has a problem on his hands: his wife, Kathryn (Cate Blanchett), is a spy. Well, actually, they're both spies. Together with their few friends, they are top operatives in British Intelligence. The trouble is that Kathryn might have involved herself in a classic case of double-dealing, selling world-changing technologies to the highest bidder. The MacGuffin in this film is Severus, a digital worm that can wriggle itself right into the heart of a nuclear facility, allowing unsanctioned control over its core. Upon receiving a list of five names from a trusted colleague, George learns that Kathryn could potentially be brokering a deal that could come with a surcharge of 20,000 human lives.
For all intents and purposes, George and Kathryn are happily married; they host dinner parties, play parlor games, have a nightcap ritual of lovemaking, and, above all, maintain a strict and simple code that one would help the other,...

There’s much concern in Black Bag about a missing cyber-worm device called Severus, capable of destabilizing a nuclear facility. But you can file that malware gadget alongside the Codex in the Superman universe and the unfortunately named Mother Boxes in Justice League. No matter how closely you pay attention, the precise functions of these power tools will be at best vaguely clear, not that it matters. In Steven Soderbergh’s sleek spy drama, a classy crew of actors keeps bringing up Severus in the direst of tones. But all that’s far less intriguing than the shifting allegiances and double-crosses among an elite group of Brit intelligence agents.

It'd be way too trite and (dare I say it) pretentious to claim that "Black Bag," Steven Soderbergh's second movie of 2025 following the minimalist ghost story "Presence," is actually a feature-length dissertation about how filmmaking has more in common with spycraft than you'd think. Watching this slickly-made espionage thriller, however, might leave you with the impression that the thought has crossed his mind once or twice. For someone who routinely directs multiple movies (and TV show episodes!) a year and insists on handling everything from editing to cinematography himself, it's fair to wonder when exactly this guy sleeps, eats, or lives anything close to a normal life outside of the camera. So, maybe it was only inevitable that he'd finally reflect this exact experience on the screen with one of the smartest, laser-focused, and downright obsessive spy movies in quite some time.

13 years after announcing his retirement, Steven Soderbergh is busier than ever. Black Bag is his second film out this year — it arrives just two months after his unconventional ghost story Presence – and marks his third collaboration with prolific screenwriter David Koepp. And it’s tremendous fun: think Ocean’s 11, if they were spies. As with his earlier Vegas-set escapades, Soderbergh’s camera is cool and confident; his handsome A-list cast are slick, sardonic and immaculately dressed; Koepp’s script is punchy and sharp, full of mile-a-minute back-and-forth rat-a-tat dialogue; and there’s a light, fizzy David Holmes soundtrack, too.
It is even partly plotted like a heist, narratively doling out just enough morsels to keep us, the viewer, on the hook. Our hero here is a turtlenecked George Woodhouse, an icy George Smiley-coded operative in a British espionage agency. His mission becomes clear within the first five minutes: he...

Continuing to prove that retirement is not just overrated but a real impediment to an artist’s best work, in “Black Bag,” Steven Soderbergh dashes off a sleek little genre exercise. It’s a doodle really, at a stage in his career when he’s clearly just having fun, yet it proves to be one of his smartest and sexiest films yet. Heading up an impeccable cast are Michael Fassbender and Cate Blanchett, who play George Woodhouse and Kathryn St. Jean, a Nick and Nora-like pair of spies so deeply, foolishly in love that they find it inconceivable that the mole in the British intelligence agency for which they both work could well be their spouse.

The Academy Awards over the years have garnered a strange reputation. Every year, without hesitation, fans will turn on their televisions to watch the pompous program, and celebrities will flock to the Dolby Theater to take part in it. Despite the awards banquet remaining a huge deal to virtually everyone, it truly seems like no one is happy with the state of the program. A mountain of complaints have been leveled against the Academy over the years, from "#OscarsSoWhite" to complaints of sexism, to allegations of xenophobia. The most common complaint, however, is far less serious and far more avoidable, and it concerns the "Consolation Oscar."
A consolation Oscar is a term for when an award is given to a legendary actor who is deserving of an Academy Award for their body of work, but isn't quite deserving of the one they received the award for. It is a collective...
