The first teaser trailer for a new sci-fi horror comedy titled Cold Storage has been released online, and this one looks like it could be a lot of gruesome, gloopy fun.
Starring Joe Keery (Stranger Things), Georgina Campbell (Barbarian) and Liam Neeson (The Naked Gun), the story focuses on a pair of self-storage employees (Keery and Campbell) who must fight to survive after an outbreak of a lethal parasitic fungus which makes quick - and explosively messy - work of anyone it infects.
Neeson plays a military man who first encounters the fungus, but we don't expect to see much of him in this movie (there's a good chance the trailer features shots from all of his scenes).
Jonny Campbell (Dracula) directs from a script written by David Koepp based on his novel. Zombieland and Panic Room’s Gavin Polone is producing,...

Rumor has it, Zach Cregger’s Weapons is incredible. In our perfect, 5-star review, Managing Editor Josh Korngut wrote, “Weapons is shocking, satisfying, and certain to surprise even the most jaded of horror fans. This is an immediate horror classic that should be watched with an audience.” I’m so excited, even more so because this year hasn’t disappointed at all. I’m currently in the midst of the Fantasia Festival, but domestic releases, both on streaming and theatrical, have been killer.

These days, almost everyone knows and loves Lucy Liu, but in the late 1990s, she was still relatively unknown. She had done a number of single episode appearances across various television shows and had just joined the cast of the hit Fox law comedy "Ally McBeal" in its second season in 1998, but she was still very much a rising star. Several years before she would play the "Lady Snowblood"-inspired assassin O-Ren Ishii in Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill" and just a few months before she would appear alongside Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz in the 2000 reboot of the hit 1970s spy series "Charlie's Angels," Liu appeared in her one and only western: Jackie Chan's somewhat silly action-western "Shanghai Noon."
While director Tom Dey felt like "Shanghai Noon" was a flop -- he claimed it was just a matter of the marketing making the movie look far too silly,...

As fall festival lineups are revealed, the awards race comes into focus. This week saw major announcements from the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto International Film Festival, making the rest of the year for Oscar watchers a bit clearer on which movies will be vying for the top awards.
But some mysteries remain. As release dates loom and Telluride remains tight-lipped as usual, a number of presumed Oscar contenders are question marks at the moment.
Here are the questions we're asking as we look ahead at the end-of-the-year film festival line-ups.
Will A House of Dynamite blow up?
The fall release with equal amounts of buzz and mystery surrounding it has to be Kathryn Bigelow's first film in eight years, A House of Dynamite. The movie, which stars Idris Elba, Rebecca Ferguson, and Greta Lee, was announced by its distributor, Netflix, a little over a month ago with...

Although three new movies opened in wide release this weekend, none of them caught the audience’s fancy. They’re all expected to deliver modest numbers at the box office, on the back of audience reviews that can only be described as unimpressive. Director Ari Aster’s latest, the Western black comedy Eddington, earned a C+ grade on the polling platform CinemaScore, as did Sony’s I Know What You Did Last Summer. The horror reboot is eyeing a $15 million haul in its domestic debut, which is hardly the sort of situation that a franchise film of its size should find itself in.
Although a C+ is standard for a horror picture, it’s much lower than the A grade that Ryan Coogler’s Sinnersdebuted with some weeks ago, before grossing over $360 million worldwide. I Know What You Did Last Summer finds itself in the company of recent horror films such as Barbarian,...

After collecting ballots from prominent film lovers from around the globe, the New York Times released what they're declaratively calling "The 100 Best Movies from the 21st Century," awarding the top spot to Bong Joon-ho's "Parasite" with David Lynch's magnum opus "Mulholland Drive" in second place.
As entertaining as it is to pore over this "definitive" list, the real fun comes from poring over the individual ballots that participants have sent in. They give us an illuminating look at a filmmaker or actor's particular taste, like how Julianne Moore thinks "Superbad" and "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" are some of the best films of the century (which they are).
These individual ballots also give us a chance to appreciate other smaller movies that didn't make the cut, like how Flight of the Conchords and "What We Do in the Shadows" star Jemaine Clement's list spotlights the excellent Iranian vampire movie...

It’s that time again; we’ve reached the halfway point of the year. What a strange year it’s been so far, with the box office making it clear that audiences aren’t willing to venture out for anything and everything these days. With wallets tightening, it’s event films that are proving to be the biggest draw – the zeitgeist releases that get everyone talking.
For 2025, so far, that means that only a few horror movies have reached massive, runaway box office success. The Final Destination franchise sprung back to life with Final Destination Bloodlines, giving Tony Todd a heartwarming and proper send-off with a touching final appearance and an impressive franchise milestone: it’s the first to reach a $200 million. As impressive as its theatrical run has been, Ryan Coogler’s vampire epic Sinners smashed box office records, outpacing Bloodlines and earning horror a historic first ‘A’ Cinemascore.

Jurassic World Rebirth takes inspiration from plenty of places – some more likely than others.
“The Road Runner cannot harm the Coyote except by going ‘Beep-Beep!'”
The way he told it, Chuck Jones created Wile E Coyote and the Road Runner in the glow of nine commandments. Thou shalt not stray from the road; thou shalt buy all materials from the Acme Corporation, etcetera etcetera.
Decades later, confronted by Universal and Steven Spielberg’s need of a new Jurassic movie, veteran screenwriter David Koepp was feeling inspired. “I actually wrote a list of our nine commandments… inspired by Chuck Jones” he told The Playlist last year.
“I made a list of things that we had to abide by – one was the events of the previous six movies that cannot be contradicted or denied because I don’t like a retcon. Those are no fun. Two, humour is oxygen. Science must be real.

Lucy Liu is raging on the screens once again, though this time, she’s there to have her fans screaming. Out of all the different genres she has starred in, in all those different roles, the 56-year-old actress is gaining significant attention for her latest horror flick that is currently dominating the Hulu charts: Presence.
Although the movie, which was created with director Steven Soderbergh at its helm, wasn’t met with tremendous acclaim at its release and didn’t prove to be that massive of a box office success back then, the supernatural thriller is now turning the tables and pretty much establishing Liu as the queen of the Horror era on Hulu.

In a crowded field, Hulu is fast-becoming one of the must-have streaming services. 2025 has been a good year for Hulu subscribers, with Chloe Fineman's critically-acclaimed comedy "Summer of 69" dominating the streamer's charts in May and Best Picture winner "Anora" doing the same back in March. We've also seen Timothée Chalamet's Bob Dylan biopic "A Complete Unknown" rocking the Hulu rankings, while Pamela Anderson's overlooked 2024 drama "The Last Showgirl" finally found an audience on the platform in late May. Considering how often these charts get clogged with some of the worst examples of streaming-age sludge, that's a pretty good run for Disney's streamer, and now we've got yet another interesting and unique entry on the Hulu charts in the form of "Presence."
The big conceit of Steven Soderbergh's supernatural thriller is that it's shot entirely from the point of view of a ghost haunting a suburban family home.

Gia Coppola will be honored by Italy’s Filming Italy Sardegna festival where “The Last Showgirl” director will receive the event’s Women Power Excellence Award.
In a statement Tiziana Rocca – the marketing guru and current Taormina Film Festival chief who also heads the event in the Italian island of Sardinia – praised Coppola as a fresh voice in international auteur cinema who has been able to depict “with a unique and deep look the contradictions of the human soul and the transformations of contemporary society.”
“Her presence is a source of great pride for our festival and a tangible sign of the increasingly strong link between American cinema and our country,” Rocca added.
“The Last Showgirl,” which stars Pamela Anderson as Shelley, a veteran showgirl who finds herself at a crossroads with her stage production on its last legs, was released in Italy in April by Be Water Film in collaboration with Medusa Film.

As the Cannes Film Festival 2025 wraps up, a cinematic tradition lives on: the unveiling of Y.M.Cinema’s Cannes Camera Chart. Based on IndieWire’s excellent cinematography survey (Cannes 2025: IndieWire’s Survey), this year’s data paints a clear picture — or rather, a clear frame — of where the world’s most prestigious filmmakers are heading. The verdict? Arri still dominates, Super 35 rules, and the Arri Alexa 35 is the new monarch of the Croisette. Gone are the days of equal footing between large format and Super 35. If Cannes 2024 hinted at a return to tradition, Cannes 2025 shouts it from the rooftops: Super 35 isn’t just back — it’s dominant.

In our previous analysis, we observed a gradual transition in Arri’s dominance: the once-reigning Arri Alexa Mini was still holding strong even into Cannes 2024, though the seeds of change were sown.

New Jersey is on the rise.
For years, the state had let opportunity slip through its fingers when it came to film and TV production after Gov. Chris Christie suspended the state’s Film and Digital Media Tax Credit Program in 2010. But in 2018, his successor, Phil Murphy, reinstated the credit, offering up to 30% of eligible expenses and up to 35% in certain more remote areas; over time he expanded the money available, offered incentives for productions meeting diversity criteria and locked in the program through 2039 to provide stability for content producers.
Last year, the revitalization continued when the New Jersey Motion Picture and Television Commission named Jon Crowley executive director. Crowley spent decades in the television industry and has been an elected official in his New Jersey hometown.

While the Max rebrand back to HBO Max has the streaming world in a tizzy, it’s worth remembering the significance of keeping diverse subscriptions. While “Hacks” and “The Last of Us” wrap up over on that side of your library, the Hulu and Disney bundle is essential for maximizing this summer’s offerings.
Disney+ continues to be the go-to streamer for family friendly viewing options; this month, they’ll add the official “Frozen” Broadway musical to that library, along with Marvel’s “Ironheart,” about Riri Williams (Dominique Thorne) who was introduced in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.”
Hulu has everything you need for an “Alien” movie marathon, all to gear up for FX’s “Alien: Earth” which premieres in August. You could also do a “Mamma Mia!” marathon or “Bachelor” binge — we’re not here to judge.
Top Pick: “The Bear” Season 4 (Available on Hulu)

It follows six longtime friends — three couples portrayed by Fey and Will Forte, Steve Carell and Kerri Kenney-Silver, and Colman Domingo and Marco Calvani — across four separate trips, one each season, over the course of a single year. Now, this isn't a fantasy series, so we're not sure how they're affording all these trips in this economy, but let's chalk it up to the magic of television. Steven Soderbergh was frustrated by the underwhelming box office performance of his latest film, “Black Bag,” and he is concerned that its poor earnings could represent a dark sign for Hollywood’s future.
When “Black Bag” hit theaters in March, the film received widespread praise and emerged as one of the most well-reviewed films of the year. Its critical success did not translate financially, though. The film grossed just over $38 million at the worldwide box office, falling short of its reported $50 million budget.
“It was frustrating. The people we needed to come out didn’t come out. And unfortunately, it’s impossible to really know why,” Soderbergh told Business Insider Monday about the spy thriller‘s financial performance. “My concern is that the rest of the industry looks at that result and just goes, ‘This is why we don’t make movies in that budget range for that audience because they don’t show up.

Exclusive: Steven Soderbergh is out to the town with an untitled feature doc, centered on the final interview of John Lennon, multiple sources tell Deadline.
This is the first doc in many years for Soderbergh, who released And Everything Is Going Fine — on the life of multi-hyphenate artist Spalding Gray — through Sundance Selects in 2010. We’re told Soderbergh is in production now, and the search for a distributor is on, with the film to be completed by end of year.
EPs on the project include Soderbergh, Michael Sugar and David Hillman of Sugar23, and Nancy Saslow and David Hudson of Mishpookah Entertainment Group.
Lennon’s final in-depth interview took place alongside wife and creative collaborator Yoko Ono on the fateful day of December 8, 1980 — the only radio interview granted around the release of their album, Double Fantasy. That afternoon, the pair met a team of three from Rko Radio at their Dakota apartment.

Academy Award-winning Steven Soderbergh recently reflected on his latest project, the buzzy and well-reviewed espionage thriller Black Bag, lamenting the dissonance between its critical success versus its lackluster draw at the box office.
The prolific filmmaker sat down with The Independent to discuss his disappointment and disillusionment with the waning attendance at theaters, seeing it as a negative harbinger for the entertainment industry.
“This is the kind of film I made my career on,” he began. “And if a mid-level budget, star-driven movie can’t seem to get people over the age of 25 years old to come out to theaters — if that’s truly a dead zone — then that’s not a good thing for movies. What’s gonna happen to the person behind me who wants to make this kind of film?”

Ever since his debut feature “sex, lies, and videotape” established him as a major director in 1989, Steven Soderbergh has been preoccupied with the secrets people keep and the lies they tell — both to others and themselves. It’s been a recurring theme in everything from heist films to true stories utilizing a variety of tones and styles and idiosyncratic comedies.
After 36 years of filmmaking and over 30 features, you might think Soderbergh has said everything he has to say on the subject. He’s now back with “Black Bag,” a spy thriller that might be his smartest and most beautifully directed meditation on secrets, lies, and betrayal to date — it’s certainly one of his most entertaining. Screenwriter David Koepp’s story of a British intelligence agent (Michael Fassbender) investigating five of his colleagues — including his wife (Cate Blanchett) — to figure out which one of them is a traitor is intricate,...

Folks, I'm going to be the one person brave enough to say it: 2025 has not exactly been great so far. I won't get into all the reasons why (have you checked your 401k lately?), but even narrowing the aperture to only the world of movies, things have been pretty rough out there. A majority of the big studio films have been disappointments, and the box office was struggling mightily until "A Minecraft Movie" came along. There have been a few highlights -- I loved "The Ballad of Wallis Island," for example, and I really enjoyed Steven Soderbergh's one-two punch of "Presence" and "Black Bag" -- but the first few months of the year weren't exactly filled with non-stop bangers.
Given the bumpy road movie lovers are currently experiencing, I felt a palpable sense of relief when I saw the new horror/comedy "Hell of a Summer." It's not the...

Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired North American rights to Studiocanal’s sci-fi comedy “Cold Storage.” The filmmakers have unveiled a first look.
The film toplines “Stranger Things” breakout Joe Keery alongside “Barbarian” standout Georgina Campbell and “Smile” star Sosie Bacon. The cast also includes screen veterans Vanessa Redgrave (“Mission: Impossible”), Lesley Manville (“Phantom Thread”) and Liam Neeson (“Taken”).
Jonny Campbell, whose credits include “Dracula,” directs from a screenplay by Hollywood veteran David Koepp, adapting from his own novel. Koepp’s scripting resume includes blockbusters “Jurassic Park,” “Mission: Impossible” and more recently, “Presence.” Gavin Polone, known for “Zombieland” and “Panic Room,” produces alongside Koepp.
The film follows Teacake (Keery) and Naomi (Campbell), two employees at a self-storage facility built atop a former military base, whose night shift transforms into a nightmare when a government-sealed parasitic fungus escapes from the underground levels. As temperatures rise, the microorganism unleashes its brain-controlling, body-bursting mayhem on anything in its path.
