Renée Le Roux runs the Palais de la Méditerranée, France's finest casino. But the establishment is being ruined by mismanagement and assailed by the competition. Her enemy Jean-Dominique Fratoni is determined to buy the Palais, but Renée Le Roux refuses to yield. Maurice Agnelet, an ambitious young lawyer, offers his help. He soon gains the trust of the Le Roux family and becomes both advisor to the casino, whose management he dreams of taking over, and lawyer to Renée Le Roux's daughter Agnès.

Renée Le Roux is now the new manager of the Palace. But when she refuses to appoint him general manager, Maurice Agnelet promises revenge. He then seduces her daughter Agnès, who he knows is madly in love with him.

Agnès Le Roux is missing, and no-one has seen her for four months. When Renée Le Roux raises the alarm, the police find a mysterious farewell note in the young woman's flat that gives the impression she's committed suicide. But her mother refuses to believe it.

The years pass and the investigation stagnates. Only Renée Le Roux continues the fight to discover the truth about Agnès's death. Found guilty in the financial chapter of the case, Maurice Agnelet finds himself in prison.
