‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Becomes No. 4 Most-Watched English Language Netflix Movie of All Time, Securing 158 Million Views
Image
“KPop Demon Hunters” made Netflix history during the week of July 28, becoming the streamer’s fourth most-watched English-language movie to date. In the seven weeks since its debut, the action musical secured 158.8 million views.

The animated movie from Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans has now been more widely watched in its first 90 days than Ryan Reynolds and Jennifer Garner’s “The Adam Project,” Sandra Bullock’s “Bird Box,” Cameron Diaz and Jaime Foxx’s “Back in Action,” Sam Esmail’s “Leave the World Behind,” Ryan Gosling’s “The Gray Man,” Millie Bobby Brown’s “Damsel” and Robert Rodriguez’s “We Can Be Heroes.” It also bumped “We Can Be Heroes” out of Netflix’s top 10 most popular English-language movies list.

And since the 90-day cutoff for “KPop Demon Hunters” won’t happen until mid-September, chances are high that ranking will only be going up, up, up.

Despite the success of Netflix’s latest hit,...

Despite Being Canceled, This Supernatural Comic Book Series Continues to Dominate Netflix Streaming Charts
Image
The Sandman's popularity on Netflix is no dream. The prestige adaptation of the acclaimed comic book series continues to dominate Netflix's streaming charts ahead of the release of its final episode.

According to FlixPatrol, as of July 28, The Sandman is the No. 2 show worldwide on Netflix. The fan-favorite supernatural drama series is just ahead of Squid Game (No. 3) and Trigger (No. 4) in terms of popularity, but is quite a way from knocking Untamed, a new murder mystery series starring Eric Bana and Sam Neill, from the top spot. The Sandman has seen a resurgence in streaming viewership since the premiere of its second season earlier this month, consistently ranking in the Top 10 in the majority of countries where Netflix is available. With a final Death-centric episode of The Sandman set to drop on July 31, the supernatural drama will surely receive a renewed boost in streaming views, ensuring that it...

‘Trigger’ Netflix Review: Korean Dystopian TV Starts With A Bang That Fades Into The Noise
Image
I don’t think I could ever imagine living in a world like the one we’re confronted with in Netflix’s Korean drama, Trigger. While we’ve seen violence play out often (I could even say more than often) in Korean media, it has almost never been with guns. Korea’s always been strictly anti-gun, but this new drama imagines a scenario where free access to guns is given to all residents, never mind their age, gender, nationality, or occupation. Terrifying, I know. But it’s not just the visual of Koreans getting massacred in school for bullying that is absolutely bizarre and jarring; it’s the way the story plays out, too. The 10-episode drama certainly comes across as a dystopian nightmare where everyone has a “trigger.” Something that pushes you to do the worst thing on your mind. Despite having one main plot, the series follows an anthological template,...

‘Trigger’ Finale Episode 10 Recap: Did Lee Do Adopt The Kid?
Image
The finale of Netflix’s Trigger eventually reveals the real reason why the main antagonist of the show, Moon Baek, has been distributing free guns all over South Korea. You see, he isn’t like your typical villain who is looking for something logical, like money. He was wronged by society and just wanted to watch it all burn down. He wanted to prove his point that mankind is inherently cruel. They are monsters pretending to be empaths, and the moment that mask falls off is when one sees their true colors. To fulfill their greed and desires, they can turn against anything and anyone. They won’t hesitate to shed their morals, they will steal from their loved ones, and they will turn to murder. That’s the world Moon Baek wanted to expose. In the finale, he tells the protagonist, Lee Do, that he never forced anyone to pull the trigger.

‘Trigger’ Ending Explained: Will There Be A Season 2?
Image
Trigger’s ending is another one that fits into the “humans are the real monsters” school of thought. While the 10-episode show started off on an interesting note, as it progressed, it started looking more and more familiar. A villain with an emotionally devastating backstory and the hero who suffered through a similar fate, but only one ever emerges as good. Why is that? The show does a good job of expanding on its main subject, the Trigger. To put it plainly, it’s a moment in someone’s life that leads them to make that bad decision. We see this through many characters, and I can’t help but find similarities between this show and S Line, which also has a similar way of storytelling. While in S Line, the social commentary is about privacy, for Trigger, it’s ill-treatment. And we’ve seen this ever so often in Korean entertainment.

Trigger Review: A Masterclass in Slow-Burn Tension
Image
What happens when an object of immense power is introduced into an environment that has no context for it? Trigger poses this question with unnerving focus. The series opens in a South Korea we recognize—a society of immense pressure and ambition—but drops a foreign element into its heart: an influx of illegal guns.

In a nation with virtually no gun crime, these weapons find their way into the hands of ordinary, stressed-out people. This is not a straightforward action series. It is a slow-motion study of a social fabric tearing apart. The show’s title cleverly points to the mechanical function of a firearm and, more importantly, to the psychological breaking point within every person.

A Society on the Verge

The show builds its world not on grand conspiracies, but on the quiet desperation of modern life. I once lived in an apartment with paper-thin walls, where you...

Trigger Recap & Ending Explained: Does Moon Baek’s Gun Regime End?
Image
In the new Korean thriller, “Trigger”, conspiracies and gun mania meld to create a potent cocktail of danger, twists, and secrets. The scale and stakes are massive, as individuals struggle to ensure their safety and purpose while the world threatens to blow up. However, the show’s critique of unchecked firearms access lands flat, weighed down by confusion and chaos. The writing turns bloated and incapable of engaging with the ramifications stirred. It’s all about a dramatic choice. Does hardship license you to take aggression as recourse, or does peace still seem viable?

Trigger Recap: Episode 1:

Korea is imagined as a nation of violence in the darkly dystopian series. There’s amorality that’s run deep and vicious and unsparing. The mood of South Korea has been exacerbated irreparably, with a skyrocketing count of suicides, depression instances, gun and domestic violence. Jeong-tae struggles with mental illness but receives...

Trigger Ending Explained: Does Kim Nam-Gil’s Lee Do Survive In Netflix’s Latest Korean Thriller?
Image
Does Lee Do Manage To Save Everyone At The End Of Trigger? ( Photo Credit – Netflix )

Spoiler Alert: The following article reveals key plot points from Netflix’s Korean thriller Trigger.

Using weapons for self-protection is a debated topic, and each country has its own rules on possession and use. What happens when you allow citizens to take the law and their protection into their own hands? Netflix’s latest Korean thriller, Trigger, addresses this question with a story that poses a touch of morality and human conscience at its core.

What Is The Plot Of Netflix’s Trigger?

Trigger follows the story of Lee Do (played by Kim Nam-gil), a police officer who refrains from using a gun. After having served in the military and used weapons to take lives, he vows never to use a gun. Chaos soon ensues when guns start becoming available to the common folk. They...

Netflix’s ‘Trigger’ K-Drama Recap: Is Moon Baek Dead?
Image
Legalizing firearm ownership for the masses continues to be a controversial subject. Countries that do not have strict gun laws have witnessed a rise in gun-related violence, and yet there’s always people who strongly believe owning guns can actually bring peace! Netflix’s South Korean series, Trigger, largely talks about how easy access to weapons can have a detrimental effect on society. In Trigger, South Korea, known for its strict gun laws, is under threat when there is a sudden influx of illegal firearms from an unidentified source. At the center of the action thriller is police officer Lee Do. Unlike other police officers on duty, Lee Do preferred carrying a taser over a gun. He strongly believed that a gun could never be the solution to any problem, and he trusted his tackling skills over mindlessly pulling the trigger. As reports of common people with firearms increased, Lee...

Trigger K-Drama Netflix Series: Cast, Trailer, Plot
Image
In the first moments of Trigger, a billboard announces that South Korea is one of the safest countries in the world, largely because of a ban on firearms. Why, then, are military-grade automatic weapons being couriered to unsuspecting Korean citizens, who, in turn, take their unhappiness out on others? When a kind police officer with a traumatic past begins investigating these seemingly random violent crimes, he crosses paths with an overeager citizen sleuth who sheds light on a greater societal evil at play.

The series stars K-drama icons like The Fiery Priest’s Kim Nam-gil; Kim Young-kwang, villain of Netflix’s psychological thriller Somebody; and Squid Game actors Lee Suk and Kim Joong-hee. Trigger is director Kwon Oh-seung’s first project since his 2021 debut, Midnight.

Psycho-frame on how Anime Provides That Creative Spark
Image
If you are ever in the need for some super slamming deathcore, look no further than Psycho-frame. The supergroup has been releasing killer merch, incredible snare blasts (shout-out interview alumnus Hunter Young for dialing that in) and all-time classic EPs for the past few years, culminating in the release of their first full-length record, Salvation Laughs In The Face Of A Grieving Mother . Astute readers will probably have noticed by now that their name is a Gundam reference, and it will shock no one that the entire band is filled with anime fans. Upon the release of their new record ad right after the band visited Crunchyroll HQ, I chatted with vocalist Colter Cuthbertson about how anime permeates all facets of the band. Was anime on or around while you were writing or recording the new album? Colter Cuthbertson : Yes! I was just finishing Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 around the...

Netflix's 'Ozark' Replacement Continues To Be a Global Streaming Success
Image
Netflix may have said goodbye to Ozark, but its spiritual successor is holding the fort — and then some. The Waterfront, the streamer’s new gritty crime drama, has proven to be a major global hit, dominating Netflix’s Top 10 English-language shows list for three straight weeks before finally dropping to No. 2 in its fourth week. The series, which features a sharp ensemble cast and moody slow-burn storytelling in the tradition of Ozark and Bloodline, has pulled in over 36 million views globally and racked up 229 million hours of watch time. While it finally slipped from the top spot this week — replaced by The Sandman Season 2 — The Waterfront’s initial run has been nothing short of a win for Netflix.

Created by Scream and Dawson’s Creek mastermind Kevin Williamson, The Waterfrontfollows the Buckley family, owners of a North Carolina fishery with a long history of shady side hustles. But despite the pedigree...

Crunchyroll Anime Awards Completely Ignored the One Anime That Has Objectively Way Better Animation Than Solo Leveling
Image
In a year where animes like Solo Leveling delivered spectacle after spectacle, it’s easy to imagine how some gems like Delicious in Dungeon might get overlooked. But the story of this year’s Crunchyroll Anime Awards has raised various questions amongst its audience.

Now, don’t get us wrong, Solo Leveling is not bad. The series has provided many memorable moments, action sequences, and a unique storyline that has made it reach the top. But to be fair, animation is more than flashy sequences and impact frames – it’s about fluid movement, expression, and consistency. While Delicious in Dungeon excelled in those fields, the anime was short of winning the honor of being the “Anime of the Year”. Here are some of the reasons why this anime was worthy of the title.

The animation of Delicious in Dungeon was a sight for sore eyes Still from Delicious in Dungeon...

Why ‘Mha: Vigilantes’ Feels More Like ‘The Boys’ Than a True ‘My Hero Academia’ Spin-off
Image
My Hero Academia: Vigilantes has a lot of commonalities with the original My Hero Academia series, and it is probably why the series is such a big hit with just a few episodes under its belt. One of the commonalities between the two series is the use of drugs in order to achieve different kinds of results in terms of quirks in My Hero Academia.

While My Hero Academia had the Quirk-Destroying Drug and its antidote, which were used by Overhaul, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes has Trigger, which is used to enhance the capabilities of a quirk in different ways. However, this single modification makes all the difference in the world.

In fact, many anime fans believe that because of the Trigger in My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, the story feels more like a spin-off of the popular American satirical superhero drama The Boys. The series also had a similar drug called Compound V,...

Kevin Williamson Teases Topher Grace's Dark Turn in New Series 'The Waterfront'
Image
With less than a month until the premiere, Netflix is starting to unveil more information about its upcoming thriller series The Waterfront. This week, series creator Kevin Williamson (The Vampire Diaries) talked to Entertainment Weekly about several aspects of the show and singled out one character — Grady, played by Topher Grace (Spider-Man 3). The new series is set to premiere on June 19.

Grace is widely known for doing comedy — especially the long-running sitcom That 70's Show — and, even though he's done drama and thrillers in his career, you don't necessarily think of him when imagining a character that can give you chills. From the looks of it, this is about to change with The Waterfront. During the interview, Williamson talked about Grace's approach to the character. He stated:

"He brings sort of an unexpectedness to the role. He feels unpredictable. And so we were able to write toward that. So...

‘My Hero Academia: Vigilantes’ Latest Episode Featured a Marvel Icon

Not a single week has gone by without surprises since My Hero Academia: Vigilantes’ premiere. This one is no different. The latest episode of the anime featured the most visually interesting easter egg for Marvel fans. There were some frames in the episode that were visibly different from the anime’s art style.

If these frames piqued your interest, you’ll be pleased to know that they were drawn by R.B. Silva, a Brazilian artist who has worked on many Marvel comics. His addition to Vigilantes was surely exciting to look at, but it held some narrative importance as well, which is one of the best parts.

"It Is A Mistranslation": Hopes For Chrono Trigger Remake Have Been Dashed
Image
There have been several rumors and fan requests for a remake of the classic Chrono Trigger, and for a few days, it looked like a remake might have accidentally been confirmed by co-creator Yuji Horii. Horii-san never made any such statement" (via GamesRadar+). Horii did state, "I get a lot of requests for the remake of Chrono Trigger as well, and...

Image
