I am writing this review for one reason: no one else wrote one. At the time I saw "Daydark," it was rated 6.4. I thought, well that's pretty good...but I sure wish there were some reviews to go by. My rating is 5, so I can't say I agreed with the consensus.
This is an Italian film about a man whose son was murdered by a serial killer, who awakes from a drunken stupor with a huge earpiece stuck in his right ear and the voice of said killer. The child's body was never found, so he offers the father a chance to locate him once and for all. He agrees, but has to go through a strange set of procedures to get there that has an odd wrap up.
Perhaps the relatively high ratings were due to the dramatic acting, but I found it to be over dramatic. The actions of none of the protagonists made much sense, and the voice of the killer sounded right out of a Giallo film. He could take a lesson from Hannibal Lector. Just when you thought the film was finally getting toward the end, it kept on going in odd directions. I wanted to sympathize with the father, but I don't know what it is about Italian cinema, but they seem to want everyone to suffer.
Production-wise, special effects were pretty decent, the musical score was effective and unobtrusive. The editing was pretty crisp and cinematography appropriate. Nothing was overwhelmingly great, but fine for the subject matter. However, it was the failure of the script and the director's unwillingness or inability to rein in his actors that lowered my rating.
I do hope others will chime in, but that's what I've got.
