I love this type of movie,so I'm possibly it's target audience...I simply cannot agree with the 1 star reviews,they seem hostile for the sake of being hostile. Its not up there with the likes of Excalibur,but like another review suggested,more like a slightly lower budget Solomon Kane. Wish there was more action,but the story flows pretty well, decent special effects for the low budget. Acting was solid nothing oscar worthy but it gets the job done...Now,makes me want an actual sequel or reboot to Solomon Kane....and again those 1 star reviews are beyond ridiculous,it's nowhere near that bad, straight in the bin with them.

This film is ambitious, it's atmospheric, moody and serious. The costumes are beautiful, the sets and locations are too. The cinematography, score and CGI helps with building this world, and the actors were great.
The flaws: this film needed some early critical editing to the story. There was potential for a unique fantasy world to emerge, but I think what we saw was a patch job of various narrative tropes mixed together.
I think clarity, directness, and the courage to propose/build one's own fantastical world would have had a more weighty creative impact on the viewer and it would have helped immerse oneself into someone else's imagination.
I do not want to discourage anyone from seeing this movie! It is incredibly impressive what can be done by motivated creatives, and it's still very fun. Give it a shot if you have the opportunity!

The atmosphere of this movie reminds me of Hercules The Legendary Journeys meets Dark Souls. And as someone who's a fan of both I think that's awesome!
I'm not sure who pissed in the cheerios of the people hating on this movie giving it 1-Star. I'm sure they're a joy to have at party's. "ugh, can you believe Rachel's choice of music, it's atrocious." Give me a break, at least this film is trying to break away from the mainstream conveyer belt b.s.. I would rather spend my money renting this than $350M Captain Falcon Lame New World slodge.
If you like fantasy, particularly Dark Fantasy, this is enjoyable so long as you're aware that you're going into a lower budget indie movie doing the best it can with what it has.
My likes for this film:
My Dislikes:
So overall it was worth my time and my money. I'm happy to support ann ambitious indie film that breaks away from the mainstream. If you're a Medieval Fantasy fan and set your expectations realistically it's enjoyable.

My likes for this film:
- The witches performance and costume design were phenomenal. Terrifying yet elegant. Makes you want to stare and run at the same time. Truly Souls Bossworthy.
- I did like the plot a lot. It was simple and while a little formulaic at times I appreciated this particular mixture of narrative elements. And the twists were clever even if familiar. If you see them coming, good for you. Have a cookie.
- I think Bhodie and Avalon had good chemistry. They complimented each other well and worked best when they performed as a team.
- I thought the fight scenes were mostly well done.
- Bhodie had some good one-liners.
My Dislikes:
- Obviously this move is on a budget but a little more world building and a bit more character introduction. Felt information was missing at times and took a while to get familiar enough with Bhodie to finally root for him.
- Pacing was okay but it felt kind of like a Two Act movie. I think it may have benefited from a beefier middle act. Which if I'm left wanting more of the movie, I guess that's a good impression.
So overall it was worth my time and my money. I'm happy to support ann ambitious indie film that breaks away from the mainstream. If you're a Medieval Fantasy fan and set your expectations realistically it's enjoyable.

I'll keep this simple (like my mental state...) This starts off well with a great look and atmosphere, and even a clever touch of humour here and there.
But, sadly, after about 20 minutes or so it begins to lose its focus, and its hold on the audience. To me, the forward momentum just kind of stops as the scenes around this time are just very SLOW, drawn out torture in a sense. That does not a good movie make and for me personally is just a very lazy default to an unnecessarily lowest denominator.
That is too bad, really, because I think there was a fairly decent, if not terribly original idea here, but someone definitely dropped the ball in my lowly and wretched opinion. The look and mood though I feel could have been very effective, if there were a decent story to go along with it.
To be fair, I am not a huge fan of these kinds of Sword & Sorcery films (with the exception of course of the excellent 'BEASTMASTER', 'CONAN', 'KRULL', and perhaps a few others) but, especially with such a strong, dark beginning, it is a shame that whomever was behind the actual storytelling to me just simply didn't seem that terribly interested.
I gave it a VERY generous '5' because of the nice look of it and the good look and atmosphere, but if you are looking for an entertaining and compelling story, I'm afraid this isn't it...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~MY PARTICULAR WAY OF RATING:
5 - Flawed, but with some entertainment value.
6. A decently passable story maybe worth a watch.
7. A solid film, well made, effective, and entertaining.
And, obviously, you can probably figure out what above and below these would mean... : )
(Maybe, this statement below which was my original Title was why my first review was declined, IDK... Let me try added it down here)
Yes, a lot of these '10' reviews are clearly plants. But, the '1' star ones are not justified either...
I really dislike leaving poor reviews for smaller production movies as they are truly a passion project for all involved in making them but I also believe in honest reviews. This movie could've had so much potential. The story was actually quite engaging and the sets and effects were pretty solid. For a lower budget movie these aspects were surprisingly good. The costume designs were truly great and really contributed to my 2 star rating. The acting however made this movie unbearable. Some scenes seemed like endlessly long monologues shot with the camera frame never leaving the unemotional face of the speaker. The female lead had a deadpan way of delivering her lines that I tried to attribute to character development at first until I realized it was just true lack of theatrical or cinematic training. She was not the only example of poor acting, it seems as if the creators of this film just rounded up their friends and said "Who wants to be in a movie?" I went into it with an open mind and a true love for the genre in hopes of finding a little known gem, sadly that's not what I found. This will not become one of those films that was so bad it's good or finds a cult following. I've heard this was supposed to be a trilogy, let's hope the actors find their chops before the next installment. The story itself would be worth following even with the low budget production if the acting can be improved.
If you like Sword and Sorcery, this independent film is better than a lot of big studio swings and misses like Dungeon Siege, and not at all the unwatchable "fan fiction", like most of the other low budget attempts that are streaming right now. The visuals are great for a low budget green screen movie, and it is intelligently written. The plot would probably make a good video game. On the other hand it is still far from a perfect film. Much of the "acting" is just breathy emoting, and the plot is definitely geared towards fantasy gamers and heavy fans of sword and sorcery fiction, without much exposition, which I actually think is a good thing, but casual viewers most likely will be lost. Also, everything is played super straight, without the sense of joy that old classics like The Sword and the Sorcerer, or Krull, or even the newer movies like Forbidden Empire, are full of. But it works for what it is and is a welcome addition to the genre.
... I gave it an extra star just because good sword and sorcery films are difficult to pull off.
Small budget movies with a limited cast can still succeed, and this movie almost gets there. That is if you can get past a slow first act and a dull female lead. This movie had real potential as a modest medieval fantasy with knights, witches, magic and a brief Groundhog Day / Edge of Tomorrow concept. Unfortunately, it is held back by some deadpan acting, an initial boring and slow plot, and the modern tropes of an over-powered female knight who is also "the chosen one who is the key to everything". The two leads together have zero chemistry, limited acting range and are anti-excitement. The female protagonist in particular is written as a depressing, angry and defeatist character and the actress's sullen, unexpressive & dark tone makes her even more unsympathetic. She is the modern trope of an aggressive, anti-feminine and vastly over-powered knight physically beating men who out-weigh her by 100 lbs. Overall, It was more fun to watch the witches and other assorted bad guys (most without faces) in this complicated and meandering plot. The antagonists are the best part of this movie! There is no romance or sexual tension between our two main characters. It's all business. Why are action movies of the last decade so unromantic and asexual?
The Edge of Tomorrow gave this fantasy niche a much better treatment. In that movie the main pair tried different techniques and ideas to learn and improve themselves against a far more powerful enemy. Here, the writers show the definition of insanity by having our wooden, and densely unimaginative couple just do the same sword-fighting buffoonery again and again like slow-motion statutes. Eventually, they figure it out but with better, livelier actors and some imagination this could have been more interesting. This movie does pick up in pacing and plot about at the halfway point. The male lead gets more heroic and competent as the movie progresses but he never is allowed to defeat an opponent without help. Hollywood used to be able to put out small, low budget productions and make them work. But then they used to have romance or the possibility of that in their action fantasy flicks. The female lead could have been a man and it wouldn't have made a difference in action or dialogue or tone in this 2025 movie.
While it does have the feel of a low budget fantasy adventure (which have resulted in some real gems), there is surprising depth here. It has the standard "defeat an ancient evil" trope but has some clever twists. There is a nice mix of philisophical questioning along the way, leading you to wonder what the characters will do at the end. It's also a nice perspective of 2 heroes as opposed to the huge casts as is popular in the genre. I'm always a believer that budget doesn't necessarily define the entertainment value of a movie, this one proves that point. The world building is pretty detailed, I could see this having been a series rather than a move.
This Is Not a Fake Review. Check out my other reviews by clicking on my username to prove it. Thx!
Going into A Knight's War I was expecting a poorly told and poorly produced B Movie. Strangely that's not at all what A Knight's War is. Surprisingly it's really a pretty well made and well told fantasy adventure story.
The Knight takes on an oath to save an innocent woman and fulfill a prophecy and from there an adventure to the depths of darkness unfolds.
The film is genuinely well made. Is it perfect? Certainly not, and some small failures of editing make the story difficult to follow at first. But if you stick with it all makes sense as the story progresses.
The scenes are convincing and the atmosphere is gritty and dark. This film constantly reminded me of the Dark Souls and Mortal Shell video games, which is definitely a compliment to it's art direction and Visual Effects.
The script is competently written medieval fantasy and the actors portray their heroic characters with depth and gravitas. I was particularly impressed by the portrayal of a genuinely good and noble knight fighting against the forces of darkness in both his inner and outer world. And the female protagonist is convincing as a woman torn apart by the lust for revenge.
This film is a genuine dark fantasy sword and sorcery and it's depiction of medieval knights and dark magic is impressive. Most of all it's a solid and exciting action adventure movie and a genuine effort to do the genre justice.
Is it a bit rough around the edges? Sure, but it's merits shine through and make it an enjoyable watch with a satisfying story arc.
A bit sad and unfair that the positive reviews of this film are being down voted just because it is a B Movie. Because actually, it totally deserves the positive reviews it's getting.
If you like films like Solomon Kane, or Excalibur, then check out A Knights War. Give it a chance, it's a good watch! :D.
I'll give the cast and crew of A Knight's War credit for creating something we don't see enough of these days which is the moderately budgeted, sword & sorcery fantasy film. However, the pluses - great scenery, sets and costumes - are more than offset by the negatives - just ok acting, a story that was a pastiche of so many other genre tropes and, one of my continued biggest beefs, a run time that could have easily had been 15 or more minutes less.
And, as in my title, there were so many elements of A Knight's War that had the whiff, intentional or not, of being lifted from other films. Dying over and over to come back again - Edge of Tomorrow. The 'Light' and some of the music - Game of Thrones. Costumes and the masks - Pan's Labyrinth. The lead, Bhodie (Jeremey Ninaber - decent performance) - shades of The Witcher. You get the picture.
Overall A Knight's War is not awful nor is it very good. So, view at your own choice, especially if this type of film is in your wheelhouse.
I almost didn't watch this film due to the reviews. Yet, my love for fantasy swayed my decision. I'm so glad my curiosity took over. This film is dark and moody atmospherically. For a small budget; the costume/set design/special effects were all done well. Could the actual story be more developed? Yes. That being said. By the end of this flick everything comes full circle. I personally felt the acting was fine. If you are only into big names on the screen and a 20 million dollar budget. This probably isn't for you. For me personally, this movie did everything it was supposed to. I was throughly entertained.
I really love these old school type fantasy / action films with good vs evil etc.
The only thing that's lets it down is the budget, some special effects seem cheap but everything else is solid, the acting, action and story.
I don't really understand the bad reviews, they clearly went to some effort to make a solid film here, which in my opinion doesn't fall on deaf ears.
Similar vein to the film Solomon Kane, and if you haven't seen that one then I highly recommend it also.
Give it a shot, not bad at all, not going to give away any story elements here but it also reminded me of computer games like The Witcher or something.
Knights verses witches and demons, what's not to love?
Anything with swords I'll watch.
The production value is exceptional... the production designer, costumer and armourer know their jobs very well.
Exceptional story and unlike others I wasn't bothered by the acting... I'd much rather see subdued acting rather than over the top.
I stayed in the story, really wanting to see how it turned out.
The fight scenes were well done, believable.
Others on here have complained about the lead actress... I think she played it well, she played angry, brooding impatient, which served the character.
If I had one complaint it would be with the gate keeper. I felt his costume was too simple.
I generally like these types of shows. I'm a huge fantasy nerd. There are clearly stylistic and thematic nods here to the lord of the rings and Guillermo del Toro that I thought were interesting, but kind of detracted from the story.
The biggest issue with this movie was the script and the dialog. The narrative seemed unfocused and sometimes like maybe there were multiple versions patched together. The pacing was sometimes good (more-so at the beginning), but often not. A good editor could have helped in the end as well.
The mood, sets, costumes, lighting, and visual effects were all pretty good considering that (I'm guessing) this show's budget was pretty minimal. The acting, while not great, is passable but I think could have been much better with a better script and dialog and perhaps directing.
Overall, passable but not great. I don't think it deserves 1 star, but I think the 6 I gave it were generous.
Dude, this movie was thrown together on a dime, and it's still fire-way better than those bloated big-budget disasters. You know how it goes: Hollywood dumps millions on CGI and overhyped stars, and it's still a snooze or a total mess. This flick? No cash, no problem. They leaned on guts, good writing, and some real-deal effort. It's crazy how they made it work with peanuts while the fat-cat films tank hard. That scrappy, underdog energy hits different-proof you don't need deep pockets to make something worth watching. Just some heart and hustle. Big-budget clowns could learn a thing or two from this.
I was browsing through prime videos when I came across this movie. I knew it was one of those movies that was not done by a big film company and knew it was a low budget but I watched the trailer. After watching the trailer, I thought this doesn't look too bad. Then I read the reviews and I saw some reviews that reminded me of something I would write when a movie was surprisingly good when you didn't expect it. The acting and dialogue were pretty good. The gatekeepers performance was excellent and I expect to see him in other films in the future based off this performance. The male lead named Brohdie had a nice face and reminded me of a mix between Aragon and Boromir from Lord of the rings from his looks and his characteristics. The female lead named Avalon had such a great presence which made her even more beautiful. I really liked the theme of choosing the light over the darkness and whether the light exists or not. I like that they left it open for a part two. I would definitely watch if there was one. This movie entertained me more than a lot of big Budget movies have. It was the perfect amount of run time and kept my interest the whole time.
I watched the film at the Toronto Revue Cinema premier. Post film, I stayed for the live Q&A and learned that the sets were hand built in the directors backyard which was fascinating, including the minimal resources he had to work with.
This movie looks and feels like something made with tens of millions, yet is pulled off with less than the craft services budget of large films. I'm a big fan of the art direction, sets and costumes feel inspired by the video game series Dark Souls. The story left me wanting more of this dark fantasy. Imagine want this director could achieve if given a real budget. I hope we're witnessing a new Neill Blomkamp in the making.
All in all this film is pretty good.
The negatives: The dialogue writing is poor. Often very cliched, sometimes totally random and at times does not sound natural at all.
The acting is very hit and miss. The main actors seemed to struggle with the material, so sometimes they do a good job and other times not so much. The supporting actors were on the whole very good I thought.
The positives: The art and costume design is fantastic and considering the budget quite astonishing. All involved need to be given a big budget feature soon.
The mythology/setting is interesting and, while somewhat derivative, it holds together really well.
The character arcs for the protagonists were well done and made sense.
The mood of the film was spot on.
On the whole a decent effort, if you like fantasy and don't mind a smaller budget film then give this a go.
I was pleasantly surprised on how well made this movie was. Realistic armor, great CGI, choreography that made sense. Those are all things that you hardly ever see later.
The practical effects instead of just using CGI made it even better as it just feels like a dying art more and more it was a breath of fresh air.
Art direction itself was fitting to the story.
Acting wasnt stunning but also wasnt hard to watch.
Story: While it wasn´t anything groundbreaking and could do a bit better on worldbuilding. It was still enjoyable and made sense.
All in all I am happy to recommend this movie to friends and would love them to create more like this.
I just finished watching it. The poster image was what caught my eye at first, I do enjoy some knightly stuff.
I was pleasantly surprised to find a gem like this. The armour being, from what I can tell, all practical and we'll designed. Elements of fantasy without going too over the top. The acting was all pretty solid in my opinion, the interactions between the characters felt well performed and written.
I will say that it did feel a little bit fast near the end, but not to any degree that ruined the movie. I would definitely watch more in this setting if there was/is more. The concept as a whole was enjoyable, the character designs were well executed, I remained interested throughout, though as mentioned it felt a little bit fast near the end. Could have maybe worked better as a series, but on that I can only speculate.
All in all, a very solid and enjoyable.
Even though I love medieval fantasy movies with a little horror sprinkled in, my expectations were very limited for this one. The poster looks rather unexciting, and the ratings are quite low at the moment. You could already tell that the movie did not have much of a budget. However, the cast and crew behind this flick managed to deliver a decently enjoyable film that looks quite good and manages to entertain throughout.
Despite my overall enjoyment, there are clearly some flaws. The editing is a little poor at times, and the pacing does not quite flow, which harms the storytelling. The story itself was enjoyable and fairly unique, and it actually convinced me that I would watch a second part if there ever is one, which I doubt. The movie features some decent gore, and the witches, demons, and other evil beings looked fantastic, especially considering the limited budget.
The acting from the two main protagonists was good and believable, and their characters were written well enough for me to root for them and enjoy their screen presence. This is definitely not a top-tier medieval fantasy film, but considering the limited resources, they really created something impressive. I certainly had a good time watching it, so if you are into this kind of movie, you should definitely give A Knight's War a try.
Also, it appears there are quite a few fake reviews that gave the movie ten stars, which are sadly countered by many people disliking those reviews. This makes it seem like the movie is not worth watching. Ignore the fake reviews and check the profiles of the people who wrote them to see if they are genuine viewers who simply enjoy these kinds of flicks without ruining them through fake reviews. [5.9/10]
Despite my overall enjoyment, there are clearly some flaws. The editing is a little poor at times, and the pacing does not quite flow, which harms the storytelling. This is a low(?) budget film that, if you like the genre, is worth a watch.
Always the weakest part in a film such as this, the writing. Had they taken a couple more passes at it, it would have paid dividends. As it was, it was interesting but it was hard to understand why some things were happening. I just went with it.
I expected much worse from the actors, so pleasantly surprised. If I saw them in other films I would not be surprised. The best were the two main leads and the first two "challenges". Nobody did a terrible job.
I really am curious what the budget was for this. I can't easily find it and it isn't worth a serious effort. I assume it was low budget and they did well with what they had. I never found the production lacking. I found myself thinking if Netflix or Prime were to drop their money into better writing and production and skip the big names, they could fill their inventory with 20 low budget but entertaining films.
Bottom line, if you like the genre I think you will enjoy this. Anyone rating this 8, 9 or 10 has to be a crew member or family of the crew. You could argue for a 7 but I will still stay with 6.
I was worried when I read the reviews but ended up really liking it. The beginning was a bit slow, but once it got going it was a good story line. If you have a Biblical world view, you can see the good in this movie. Defeating your demons and sins and walking into the light! Over coming hate and anger, learning that we DO have a choice of path we are in in this life and for eternity! I like that it quoted scripture and showed how we can choose to believe it or reject it. The acting was decent. I absolutely loved that there was no foul language nor sex and nudity! It was a tad bloody, but not gory. Overall, a good pic for a teenage family and up!
