Who can't like this game??

Whether or not you're a fan of Assassin's Creed, it doesn't matter. This game will satisfy both fans of the series and those who just want a damn good pirate game. Everyone wins. For those who wanted both of those things, your luck is well and truly in.

Black Flag is an ambitious game but has a truly great pay-off at the end. The sense of exploration and freedom found in this game isn't something that you would find in most other games. With the north part of the Caribbean as your world (including but not limited to places like Jamaica, Cuba and Barbados) you can sail as pirate captain Edward Kenway on your ship, the Jackdaw, through the open seas taking on British and Spanish ships to steal their cargo, hunting sea creatures and exploring underwater shipwrecks. There's just so much to do. The sense of progression in this game is really great too. In previous AC games there was often an issue of having too much money and not having anything to do with it. Well here you can use that money to upgrade your character as well as your bad-ass pirate ship. As the game progresses you'll be able to take on larger and larger vessels with bigger prizes and even take on the Legendary ships. The characters are mostly based on real historical figures of the period and all are interesting as well as well produced in every respect.

Issues with the game however are that combat is still to easy, stealth is not refined enough and regardless of being a fan of the franchise, the story really didn't do it enough for me. I honestly preferred the story in AC3.

I would recommend picking up this game. It's fun, well made and engrossing. Even if the story doesn't really float your boat, there's so much more to do in terms of side quests. I therefore give this game a 9 out of 10 and would argue that it was one of the top 5 games of 2013.

Thanks for reading this review I hope you found it helpful. If you enjoyed it please feel free to read my other reviews.

AC4 Brings New Life to the Franchise

Before this game, all previous Assassin's Creed games felt the same. It even made WatchMojo.com's top 10 most overrated games list due to Assassin's Creeds 1-3 all playing extremely similar. The latest installment, however, added a new feature that took up half the game. This feature, of course, is the Naval aspect. Fans got a taste of this in Assassin's Creed III, but it is nowhere near the level Of 4. Whether it's hunting sharks, collecting cargo, sailing to an island, seeking treasure or engaging in Naval Battles, sailing pirate ships in AC4 is an incredible and well polished gameplay mechanic. Aside from that, it also made the world feel more real, since you could almost all of the Caribbean sea. Not only is this a must have for any Assassin's Creed fan, but it's also a great game for new players to start, since the story no longer follows Desmond Miles.

The Greatest Assassin's Creed

While I have not completed every Assassin's Creed game, I have played portions of most (though I have not touched Origins or Odyssey). Black Flag is the greatest of them all. The Ezio trilogy may have the best story, but this has a fantastic balance of excellent gameplay and a decent story. If you are looking for the ultimate AC experience, go with Black Flag or Syndicate.

Sailing the high and low seas, one tailing mission at a time.

I'm slowly going through the Assassin's Creed series, and at last I've arrived at a fan favourite. ACIII impressed me with its narrative, but its gameplay aspects left me wanting more.

I do remember enjoying the brief ship sections immensely, and here we have a game that goes full bore (and full mast) into exploring naval combat.

It's the best part of the game and it's not even close. Oftentimes the waters are rather relaxed. Sailing at full speed, with the wind, shanties arise amongst the men. There's a real sense of place in the lavish, verdant West Indies.

And then: a ship, over the horizon. A storm is conjured, winds howling. High waves buffet port and starboard. Rain pelts the deck. Music blares. The man o' war fires, its lines of cannons almost challenging the thunder and lightning crackling down on all.

It is safe to say that out of every AC game to this point, these encounters were the most immersive thing I've experienced.

There were many a close call, many a relieved sigh as I go to board the enemy ship and go through the process of easily cleansing it of its lives and goods.

And that's the issue. The rest of the game, including boarding, is very, very easy, yet still finds a way to be tedious. The story is odd, its plot broken up haphazardly.

Characters are introduced, then forgotten about for great lengths, to be brought back seemingly at random. Their motivations are confusing, some twists and turns are almost completely unearned.

The plot itself has you going all around the map, but it rarely feels justified. The story missions alone are quite boring; the amount of tailing missions in this game is incredibly lazy.

There are a multitude of gameplay elements that are barely touched if you don't bother to do any of the bloated side content. Tutorial messages persist even after the 200th time I've done the action it's telling me about.

It feels like a game with so many little parts developed by groups of people. Yes, most games are precisely that. But most games hide it better.

And yet, despite all that, despite all that, I still enjoyed my time in the West Indies. The game does have a heart. Its story hits you out of nowhere at times. A key scene in the middle, and one at the very end, really did show the potential it has.

I found that I did actually care for the people I'd met. Every janky encounter, every bit of casual, seemingly meaningless dialogue, built up a sense that they were moving and breathing and living throughout the same world as me. Only later in the story did I realise the connection our main character had to them.

I even enjoyed the modern day sections, something I didn't expect with how ACIII's plot ended up. It does feel anticlimactic, but finding all the secrets was a fun and rewarding experience. It felt much more connected to those initial games than I anticipated.

I just wish it wasn't put together in such a slapdash way. There's a brilliant game here that's screaming to get out of a good one.

The end of the Golden Age of piracy is a fascinating time. Civilization is arriving, with all its great benefits and all its great faults. Seeing how these people deal with their era of freedom being crushed is truly fascinating. I won't forget my time sailing around, devastating three ships in the late game that I would have individually struggled against initially.

I just wish the game was in the oven a little longer. I wish the other AC games were too, to be honest.

But, I was impressed for a game from 2013. The PS4 and Xbox One were on their way - the seventh generation of consoles was glorious, but everything has to come to an end someday. Best go out with style.

smokin' graphics..

After a respite, I have returned to Animus to live the life of Edward Kenway in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. This title picks up after the events of Assassin's Creed III, but has a very different setting. Instead of being a modern day Assassin, hiding from the Templars and delving into the past via an Animus, your character works for the Templars, or rather their Abstergo Entertainment Company as an analyst for the Sample 17 project. The goal of the project is to produce a video game, set in the Caribbean during the golden age of piracy, based on the 'donated' memories that comprise Sample 17.

As the games before it, Black Flag is a third-person, open world, action-adventure title with a heavy emphasis on stealth. As pirate captain Edward Kenway, you stalk the Caribbean for the biggest prizes, and remove any obstacle from your path, typically with a sharp blade. Of course, a pirate would not be much without a ship, and yours is the Jackdaw. It is not the biggest ship sailing the seas, but given the proper resources, it can become the fiercest. Black Flag has an M rating from the ESRB for blood, strong language, violence, and sexual themes. If you should not be exposed to such content, then you likely should not be reading this review.

Should you set sail under the black flag or scuttle this game? Time to find out.

The Pinnacle of Assassin's Creed and Pirate Media

AC 4 (which I will refer to as Black Flag from here on out) is widely regarded as the greatest Assassin's Creed game of all time. For great reason too: this game was, and still is marvelous. For a 2013 game, the graphics still hold up over a decade later, being (in my opinion) one of the most breathtaking games ever. The world didn't lack in depth, despite it being very expansive (for the time). Having various activities besides the main storyline including whaling, ghost ship encounters, taking down naval forts, hunting, treasure hunts (both on land and under the seas), and so much more. Speaking on the story, other than everyone's beloved Ezio, I would argue Black Flags protagonist, Edward Kenway, is just as, if not more of an intriguing character. He starts as a pirate and would eventually travel the world disguised as a turncoat Assassin working with the Templars, eventually even seeing the error of his ways (debatably) and joining up with the Assassins. A character who starts off coming off as greedy and arrogant overtime becomes a man you can respect and grow with. I won't go into extreme detail (now, maybe at another time), but Kenway, as well as an iconic (historically speaking) supporting cast of characters (such as Ben Hornigold, Blackbeard, and Mary Read) make this game fascinating to play both to experience an iconic era in history and to be a pirate. No game has done the pirating concept better since, and it will likely never be surpassed. Overall, if you ever wanted to experience the pirate life, or want to play a quality video game with breathtaking visuals and a compelling narrative: I couldn't recommend this game more!

A great game about pirates that loses so much because of AC mechanics.

If one were to consider this production as solely a game about pirates then we have a hit. Shanties, sailing, boarding ships, treasure hunting - great stuff. Unfortunately, as soon as the mechanics typical of the AC series are presented, and they are probably the worst here, the game loses mercilessly in reception.

Undeniably the worst part of the game is the following missions. You follow NPCs now not only on foot but by ship, which you "hide" from the sight of guards. Comical even for a video game. The plot is painfully linear, the closer to the end the duller it gets, the characters are not very memorable and the cutscenes deprive any decision-making on the part of the player and force it to accept only the one right narrative. The Edward character that the player controls and the Edward character that appears in cutscenes seem to be completely different character.

And now the icing on the cake - the stages that happen outside the Animus. I don't know who at Ubisoft designed them (and who approved them), but I think they were in the running for the most annoying, irritating missions I've seen in a game. Authentically, every character that was there brought me to the peak of annoyance, starting with the way they spoke (inserting French words in) and behaved. I don't know if that was the goal, to show a French/Canadian corporation full of annoying people but if so they succeeded. From the moment these missions appeared I was counting down the minutes until I could go back to being a pirate.

Technically, the game looks excellent for a 2013 production. The sound design and music are flawless. The big drawback is the lock on 60 fps, but on PC this can be lifted with a simple mod, which unfortunately can sometimes cause physics glitches.

To sum up the advantages:
  • best game about pirates
  • pleasant sailing and exploration of the world
  • great music and sound design
  • sea waves and light effects during storms
  • sea combat and boarding ships
  • main character that you can like (despite the fact that he can be blunt at times)
  • simple plot (which is not necessarily a disadvantage)

Disadvantages:
  • simple and linear plot, which unfortunately gets duller and duller the closer you get to the end
  • plot deus-ex machina in cutscenes, which forces the only right way of narration
  • unmemorable characters with whom it is difficult to establish any kind of relationship
  • following missions
  • missions outside the Animus
  • weak and boring underwater missions (untapped potential)
  • no possibility to view the world map while steering the ship

Disappointing. Very bland and repetitive gameplay. While mediocre, its not quite a "bad" game.

After the fairly decent AssCreed3, and considering the many positive reviews for this game, I made the mistake of having slightly higher expectations than usual. This unsurprisingly led to some disappointment (yes, sadly going against the trend in most other reviews). But once I recalibrated my expectations to "standard AssCreed fare", it was not too bad.

The story is messy and silly. It has some good parts but most of it is mediocre - overall not as good as AssCreed3 in my opinion. I have the suspicion casual or younger gamers may like it more. It sorely lacks atmosphere when compared to games like Dishonored or The Witcher or films like 'Pirates of the Caribbean'. The script is full of plot holes (even more than usual). Half of the game is fairly serious and makes some sense, but the other half is silly and does not make any sense. This inconsistency harms immersion. The main character is decent, but does not quite have the charisma of Ezio or Haytham from previous games.

The missions and gameplay built on the story are very bland and repetitive. Almost any potentially interesting story scenario is reduced to a handful of copy-paste follow/sneak/kill/eavesdrop gameplay designs. It seems like the devs were slightly lazier than usual - AssCreed3 missions were far from perfect, but still seemed slightly more varied and hand-crafted.

The difficulty balance of the gameplay is poor. AI detection feels arcade and inconsistent. Stealth areas are severely overpopulated with guards, meaning you are forced to look at the minimap all the time to have any chance of avoiding detection. If you don't reload checkpoints often, open combat is nearly inevitable, which in turn is far too easy. This makes trying to play stealth frustrating, because the odds feel unfairly stacked against you, and it is always so much easier to just fight and kill everyone. But fighting gets boring quickly - you just spam attacks, then counter when prompted, and repeat that indefinitely.

The sandbox gameplay has been brought to the fore, but like the main missions, it is very arcade, bland, and repetitive. The open world is large, but most places all look the same. Compared to AC3, there seems to be slightly less content overall, though still more than enough. The problem is a lack of quality, not quantity. Still things like naval battles and boarding enemy ships are novel for a while and work fairly reliably, which is more than can be said of naval battles in a Total War game (Shogun II etc). The sea shanties (songs) are a nice touch, and possibly the single best feature in this game.

Graphics are the best yet for an AssCreed game, and the first in my opinion to just about match those of Crysis 1 (released 6 years earlier). The water out at sea looks particularly good. The visual quality does not hold up everywhere though - quite a few ugly meshes and textures here and there. The default settings are poorly optimised - you need to manually tweak the settings to get the best visuals while keeping the FPS high. Ship physics are decent and must feel amazing to the average console peasant, but if you have an eye for realism and have been on a real ship, it still leaves much to be desired. Your 150-ton brig behaves like it has the mass and manoeuvrability of a modern olympic racing yacht combined with the stability of a modern river ferry (complete with bow thrusters). You can sail straight into the wind with no speed loss. Enemy ships also handle like powerboats. In some ways the sailing physics were more realistic in AC3 - you could not sail into the wind, and it felt slightly more natural, though admittedly less reliable (momentarily flying ships etc).

PC controls are as bad as usual. They are not game-breaking, but they do work against you - I messed up a lot of missions because my character would do the wrong thing like randomly climbing a wall. A few times just before successfully capturing a huge enemy ship, I would fall from a mast to my death due to glitched controls. The checkpoint system has its usual annoyances and reloads sometimes caused technical problems like missing quest items (requiring quiting to desktop and reloading). I encountered more bugs and glitches and generally rushed content here than in any previous AssCreed game.

Overall, for me, AC4 is a mediocre AssCreed game that wasted a lot of potential. It is not a "bad" game, but it does not deserve any of the hyped reviews.

Ubisoft keeps to the well written formula of the past games while improving on some fields, enough to make the game interesting and fun to play.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is most definitely the fun game to play.

Gameplay is very similar to that of it's predecessor, but with a lot more naval combat this time (which is something you'd expect from a game about pirates). Speaking of which, the naval combat has been slightly, but nevertheless significantly improved to add to a more pirate- like atmosphere of the game. The one thing I didn't like about it was ' naval stealth', in which enemy ships have cones of vision and as long as you don't enter it they can't see you, which is pretty ridiculous in my opinion.

Black Flag has, so far, the best graphics in the series (although they're not quite next-gen).

As for the story itself, it may be the weakest link of the game. It's not so much focused on the everlasting battle between Templars and Assassins like it was in the previous games. Rather it revolves around Edward's desire for personal glory and gain. Of course, that doesn't make it any less enjoyable to play, it just makes it less an 'Assassin's Creed' title then any other game in the series.

Overall, the game is absolutely worth your time, you can't make a mistake by buying it, although people who haven't played any of it's prequels may have a hard time settling in the story.
