Image
“Theatre,” the sophomore feature from Indian filmmaker Nishanth Kalidindi following his cult hit “Kadaseela Biriyani” (2021), will world premiere in International Film Festival Rotterdam’s Harbour section.

Set in the traditional urban center of former French colony Pondicherry in southern India, rather than its more commonly filmed spiritual township Auroville, the Tamil and Malayalam language film follows Das, a cowherd who leads a double life as an actor in a local theater company. When his past catches up with him through Guna, a former funeral drummer turned stage musician, tensions rise within the close-knit performing group under their inexperienced director’s drive for perfection.

“The film’s conception traces back to even before ‘Kadaseela Biriyani,'” Kalidindi told Variety. “I spent quite a while observing the lifestyles of the Indianostrum Theatre group in Pondicherry while they were creating pieces of theater. What stayed with me was how the director would interact...

Kerala Film Awards: Suraj Venjaramoodu leaves Mammootty, Mohanlal far behind as best actor
Suraj Venjaramoodu
On expected lines, seasoned veterans of the Kerala film industry failed to make the grade in the annual Kerala State Film Awards for 2019, which were announced here on Tuesday by Culture Minister A.K. Balan.

The best actor award went to popular comedian and character actor Suraj Venjaramoodu for his roles in "Android Kunjappen" and "Vikurthi". He left seasoned veterans like Mammootty, Mohanlal far behind and also edged out his nearest rival Fahad Fazil, who had to settle for the best character actor award.

"This is a great responsibility for me and I am greatly happy about this award. I am really thankful to those who took me in the two films. Now my wish is we all want the old normal to return, as Covid has really caused havoc. We all want the theatres to open and the audience to be back and wish and pray it happens," said Venjaramoodu.

Suriya, Nani, Fahadh Faasil Join Amazon Prime Movie Push Into South India (Exclusive)
Image
A trio of world premieres from bankable stars across the Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam languages forms the thrust of streamer Amazon Prime Video India’s push into the country’s lucrative Southern market. It comes at a time when cinemas remain shuttered due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Malayalam-language drama “C U Soon,” starring Fahadh Faasil (“Trance”) bows Sept. 1 on the service, while action thriller “V” headlined by Nani (S.S. Rajamouli’s “Eega”) premieres Sept. 5, and aviation biopic “Soorarai Pottru” starring Suriya (“Singam”) is scheduled for Oct. 30.

Of the giant streamers in India, Amazon was the first to seize the opportunity arising from the enforced shutdown of the theatrical business. It announced the world premieres of “Gulabo Sitabo,” starring Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana, and “Shakuntala Devi,” starring Vidya Balan as bypassing cinemas.

Rivals, Disney Plus Hotstar and Netflix followed suit with strong slates of their own, including Sushant Singh Rajput...

'French Biriyani' review: Danish Sait's comedy has some hits, many misses
Image
ReviewThe funniest moments in the film have to do with language confusion. Sowmya RajendranScrewball comedies when done right can be utterly delightful. Now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, French Biriyani, directed by Pannaga Bharana and written by Avinash Balekkala, has a quirky premise that promises to entertain. What better way to showcase the chaos that is Bengaluru – with its many languages, traffic problems, and protests – than through the eyes of a harried outsider? A French man named Simon (Sal Yusuf) lands in a soup only because his name sounds like 'saaman' (and the possible innuendos that can be conjured out of this have a place in the narrative too). He's hoping to attend a conference in Bengaluru but ends up with auto driver Asgar (Danish Sait) who takes him for a ride through the city that he never asked for. Danish Sait has a special place in the hearts of...

Suriya, Karthi sing together for Venkat Prabhu’s 'Party'
KollywoodOn Monday evening, a party number titled 'Cha Cha Charey', sung by Suriya and Karthi from the film was released.Digital NativeDigital NativeEven before they could share screen space together, popular actor brothers Suriya and Karthi have teamed up to sing for upcoming Tamil comedy Party. On Monday evening, a party number titled 'Cha Cha Charey', sung by Suriya and Karthi from the film was released. Apparently, it was filmmaker Venkat Prabhu’s idea to approach Suriya and Karthi for the song. Talking about bringing them on board for the song, Prabhu told Tnm: “All my films so far have had music by Yuvan Shankar Raja. This is the first time I’ve collaborated with my brother Premgi, who has composed music for Party. Since it’s a new collaboration, we wanted each track to be unique, and star power to elevate the album and garner attention. Hence, we approached Suriya and Karthi and they were cool enough to sing." Apparently, Suriya had reservations about singing. “It took some effort to convince Suriya. He even wanted to listen to the track first and then agreed to sing. Karthi, on the other hand, instantly gave his nod. He has already sung in my film Biriyani, and he had no qualms about singing again. Karthi just landed in the studio and we straightaway started recording. The song has come out very well.” Party, which boasts of an ensemble cast consisting of Jai, Shaam, Shiva, Sathyaraj, Ramya Krishnan, Regina Cassandra, Nivetha Pethuraj and Sanchita Shetty among others, is gearing up for release in August. Produced by T Siva of Amma Creations, the film has cinematography by Rajesh Yadav and editing by Kl Praveen. Venkat Prabhu will soon commence work on his next project with Simbu. Last week, Prabhu took to Twitter and wrote: “Yes, it’s official! My next is with my brother Str. Produced by Suresh Kamatchi and it’s a fresh script. Not a sequel. Artists, technicians, title and other details will follow!! Get ready to be rocked. Need all your love and blessing as always.” (Content provided by Digital Native)...

Hansika Motwani, Karthi, and Premgi Amaren in Biriyani (2013)
This 'Biriyani' looks sumptuous but is starchy (Tamil Movie Review)
Hansika Motwani, Karthi, and Premgi Amaren in Biriyani (2013)
Film: "Biriyani"; Cast: Karthi, Premgi Amaren, Hansika Motwani, Naseer, Sampath Raj, Jayaprakash, Uma Riyaz Khan, Subbu Panchu, Mandy Takhar, Ramki and Vijayalakshmi; Director: Venkat Prabhu; Rating: **1/2

A sumptuous Biriyani may not always be filling because at times it's too starchy to be digested. This is applicable to Venkat Prabhu's "Biriyani", which despite being fairly satisfying is not excellent because it gets too starchy due to unwanted ingredients. While the use of situational comedy works to some extent but what we see in some scenes is not humorous but downright awful and the double entendres directed at women are uncalled for.

I liked the previous works of the director because they didn't make you cringe.

Karthi impressed by Mandy’s pole dance in film Biriyani
Karthi
Mumbai, Jan 29: In Karthi’s upcoming movie, he will be seen opposite Mandy Thakar. The film’s name is “Biriyani” and Mandy will be seen in the role of a modern lady. Mandy says this role is sensuous and sexy, very much different from what she is in real life. The British Punjabi lady will be seen in a Tamil movie for the very first time.

In all her previous Punjabi films, she could be seen in sweet homely characters, but this role in the Tamil flick is different. Not only is she happy to do such a role, but she is a bit nervous at the same time.

Mandy on doing the glamorous role says she is thrilled to get such a meaty role.
