Vivid and different

Blind is one of those films which is very different and exciting, and tells a story very differently than the standard film. After watching a ton of movies it's very refreshing to see something different.

A woman is about to lose her eye sight, and is locked up in her apartment with nothing else than her own imagination and a computer on which she can write, when her husband goes to work. She is rehearsing to be totally blind. In the start we follow several persons, but without telling too much, things basically revolves around the blind woman.

It's in many ways a very sensible film, where her sense of lacking something is a drive of the movie. Basically this is a film about loneliness, and coping with a new reality, and also using senses. This film gave hints to Bergman (Persona) and Hitchcock (several) and some other movies with blind persons, obviously. And the film references to a lot of others as well as a part of the story.

This is first feature directed by script writer Eskil Vogt, previously especially known for the critically acclaimed Reprise, directed by Joachim Trier. Be sure to follow this mans next films.

insight

A blind woman, Ingrid, lives life trapped in her apartment, afraid to go outside. Married when she could see, she worries that her disability has caused her husband to stop loving her. She starts to imagine her husband is cheating on her, and those thoughts grow into a longer, more convoluted narrative with two characters, a lonely, porn-addicted man and a mousey woman lacking in self-esteem. The boundaries between real life and Ingrid's imagination start to blur, and the film proceeds as a series of reveals of Ingrid's husbands actions as either real of part of Ingrid's narrative. As Ingrid starts to live more in her imaginary world and give up on the real world, her husband's invitation to a party forces a crisis. Ingrid must learn to live again, or slip completely into her inner world. A clever, involving screenplay that keeps you on your toes.

Captivating and sensitive

Not exactly sure of everything I just watched, but I will say that it reminds me of both Persona and 3 Women, and to me that's a mighty high compliment to give. Some really strong performances and some wonderful direction, definitely one that requires multiple viewings and I can't wait to revisit it. It sort of pulls you in and doesn't let go, and the more it goes on the more you're intrigued but also the more you're left wondering, just like both of the films I mentioned at the top. Truly captivating stuff, one that I'm sure not everyone will take to (aesthetically, reminds me a bit of last year's Upstream Color) but that will certainly garner discussion.

Sad at first

It took over half the movie for me to finally figure out what the hell was going on! Maybe I'm just slow! Once I knew though, it's like a light came on and I looked at it completely different. I thought it was really good, I've seen some rotten movies lately. You can't help but feel sorry for the blind girl and a little for her husband. I couldn't imagine waking up one morning and being completely blind. I can easily see why she would be terrified to go outside and also to meet new people. Especially the cruel a-holes in this movie. There is so much more to it than I can discuss here, I would definitely recommend watching.

but the back is surprising

Vanguard stream of consciousness works, literary works and real life intertwined. The front is sleepy, the middle is confusing, but the back is surprising.

it;s good

so you know there are some films that make you want to make an account just to write a review; this is one of them.. also i just couldn't bare the norwegian propaganda guy. I've seen some positives review here as well, but they were too long and i didn't want to read them so i'll keep it short as well

*the cinematography is good, especially in the begging of the film; I especially liked the first few scene's camera position and angles *in some places the use of sound is outstanding, which has to be a requirement for a blind person movie *the main actress is hot *The "dream sequences" are nice, I am a fan of surreal movies, and this hits the mark despite stating too plainly what is going on

the main negative i can think of is that protagonist is not a really good writer, though it kinda makes the film more believable

so i\d recommend it

A very original, minimalistic beautiful film

This film is one of my favoruites and I watch a lot of indie art house films from worldwide successful directors. The reason I loved it so much is how original it feels. It has been a long time since I watched it but I never forgot about it.

I am surprised that between all Eskil Vogt films, including ones he wrote screenplay only, this one has the lower rating? It should be around 8 at least in my view.

Film is very original, makes you think about it. It is also aesthetically beatiful. The story is interesting. The female actress did a phenomenal job and I think she is a perfect choice for the role.

It is just refreshing to watch something that is beatiful but also not just empty, but sensual and thoughtful in a minimalistic way by all senses.

Since this film, I watched all other Eskil Vogt films including ones he did only writing. He does not disappoint. But given that, this is his first debut and despite being first one, so good, I admire him even more.

I don't like to analyse films in detail or write spoil alerts, but rather talk about the impression it left with me. This is one memorable one between many other films I watched - well rated, award winning ones. I think this film is even underrated. Not every film has to have a complex scenario, lots of actions or too much dialogue. I think this one is better than his 'The worst person in the world' but to my surprise that film made more noise, and got much higher rating. I guess we all review and appreciate different things.

Overrated, Boring, Depressing and Messy

In Norway, the recluse housewife Ingrid (Ellen Dorrit Petersen) is an insecure woman, facing difficulties to locomote and to remember objects and animals after going blind and is afraid to go outside her apartment. Her insecureness becomes paranoia and extends to her marriage and Ingrid believes her husband Morten (Henrik Rafaelsen) is cheating on her. Reality and imagination are entwined in her mind and Ingrid thinks about Morten's friend Einar (Marius Kolbenstvedt), who is porn-addicted, and Elin (Vera Vitali), who is his love affair. But what is truth and what is daydream?

"Blind" is an overrated, boring, depressing and messy Norwegian drama by Eskil Vogt. The storyline of a woman going blind and how she is affected is promising and original; however, the screenplay is confused and entwined with over-the-top porn scenes. My vote is five.

It's complicated not complex

I felt lost while watching this movie. The scenario is unique but it lacks on giving clues about the deep imagination inside the movie. As i began to think that i understood the smart idea behind it suddenly i was crushed by another plot trick and i became aware that i didnt get any of it. Funny that in the end i cant even summarize this movie to anyone.

Sorry

Yes I am sorry as yet again I've picked a blooper.

I can't find any good films to watch at all.

This was soooooo slow. I was bored after 15 minutes as literally nothing happens.

I found Ellen Dorrit Petersen irritating to look at and it was plainly obvious that she can see.

Boring film with no story.

Norwegian Propanda for Norway

4 of 10. Outside of studying it for how government propaganda works in film, I see no point to this film. In an attempt to cover its trail, unlike religious propaganda, it doesn't hold back on sex and other societal no-nos. In this film, it all has that poseur feeling.

Some will comment on its complexity, but it's not that complex. It tries to be just as it tries to shock and awe. Unless you have no other way to see fast clips of Internet porn that no one would want to watch other than with drunk/high friends to laugh at, having someone narrate how to interpret it is far from intricate or original art.

I'm sure there are better stories for getting inside a blind person's head. If not, either out of disgust or inspiration, more should pop and from different cultures. Wait for them. Maybe one will have a blind person riding a bike.
