This Underrated 2022 Animated Film Is One of Richard Linklater's Best Movies
Image
Richard Linklater's Apollo 10 : A Space Age Childhood is a fantastic animated film that ranks among the most underrated movies of the 2020s. An icon of American independent cinema, Linklater has been one of the world's greatest filmmakers for the past thirty-plus years. Linklater's latest film, the action romantic comedy Hit Man, has earned critical acclaim while dominating Netflix as one of the streaming service's most-watched films since its debut on June 7th. Due to Linklater's insistence on predominantly working on low-budget independent movies, his films have rarely achieved the box office status they deserve. Sadly, Linklater is one of many world-renowned auteurs who have struggled to finance his films in recent years. As a result, Linklater has struck distribution deals with Netflix for his previous two projects, Hit Man and Apollo 10 : A Space Age Childhood. However, whereas Hit Man has been a massive success, Apollo 10 : A...

Black Water (2007) – Wtf Really Happened to This Horror Movie?
Image
The episode of Wtf Really Happened to This Horror Movie covering Black Water was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Mike Conway, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

Animal attack movies have been quite a lucrative genre for a very long time. Obviously, Jaws is the beginning and the end of the conversation but there’s so much more. Grizzlies, whales, dogs, you name it have been the focal point of horror films and will continue to be there with things like Cocaine Bear, The Meg 2, and others infiltrating theaters on a yearly basis. Most of these, of course, are fictional accounts like Stephen King giving us Cujo or any number of other on-screen animals gone wild. There are, however, the rare account that is based on a true story and today is one of those cases. Alligators and crocodiles...

Brendan Fraser On The “Self-Loathing” That Shaped His Early Career: “On Some Level I Felt I Deserved A Beating”
Image
Brendan Fraser is best known for his physical performances in popular comedies like The Mummy and George of The Jungle, but in a recent interview, The Whale star broke down the effect his early career performances had on his body and mind.

“I got a little banged up from years of doing my own stunts and needed a surgical fix on the spine and the hinges,” he told The Telegraph.

The actor went on to have a series of surgical procedures including a partial knee replacement to repair his body.

“That took a lot out of me. I knew I would get better, but it took a long time,” he said.

Fraser continued to say that in 2007 while shooting a third Mummy movie in China, every morning, he would wake up and put himself “together like a gladiator with muscle tape and ice packs, strapping on this Transformer-like exoskeleton just to get through the scene.

‘A League of Their Own’: There’s Still No Crying in Baseball — Just Room for Fixing Old Errors
Image
A League of Their Own is a pretty darn perfect movie. The Penny Marshall-directed film from 1992, about the women recruited to play professional baseball while so many men were off fighting World War II, is a crackerjack sports movie, a winning ensemble comedy, and a well-hit drama about female empowerment in an era when the concept seemed utterly foreign. It’s got all-star performances by Geena Davis, Tom Hanks (it’s the role that kicked off his Hall of Fame run in the Nineties), Madonna (never better as an actor), and more.

Jodie Comer Set To Make West End Stage Debut In One-Woman Show ‘Prima Facie’
Image
Jodie Comer is set to make her UK stage debut in the premiere of Suzie Miller’s play Prima Facie.

The Killing Eve star will play Tessa in this one-person play, a young, brilliant barrister who loves to win and has worked her way up from working class origins to be at the top of her game, prosecuting, cross-examining and lighting up the shadows of doubt in any case. An unexpected event forces here to confront the lines where patriarchal power of the law, burden of proof and morals diverge.

Prima Facie is directed by Justin Martin and performances begin on Friday April 15 at the Harold Pinter Theatre for a strict limited 9-week season.

Comer has most recently starred in 20th Century Studios’ Free Guy and The Last Duel, directed by Ridley Scott. She first hit the international scene with her role in Killing Eve. Next year she’s reunited...

The Suicide Squad Storms the Weekend Box Office with $26.5M Win
Image
The Suicide Squad unsurprisingly came in at number one at this weekend's box office after bringing in $26.5 million. James Gunn's long-awaited movie featuring some of DC Comics' stable of villains was able to break a record for the highest-earning R-rated opening during the pandemic. With that being said, the opening is also a franchise worst. The Suicide Squadis currently streaming on HBO Max, which most definitely stole some box office thunder, but several analysts are pointing to another reason why the latest DC movie is underperforming and a lot of it has to do with the first time the characters were introduced on the big screen.

David Ayer's Suicide Squad (2016) was a box office monster, earning $746.8 million worldwide. However, it was panned by fans and critics. The decision to bring James Gunn on board to revamp the villains has been deemed a great choice by the studio, but...

Rudyard Kipling
Disney's The Jungle Book: 10 Differences Between The Book And The Animated Movie
Rudyard Kipling
Walt Disney gave a copy of Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book to one of his writers and said: "The first thing to do is not to read it." (As per Art and Animation: From Mickey Mouse to Hercules by Bob Thomas.) So from this alone, it's clear that Disney's final movie was intended to not be a loyal adaptation to Kipling's novels.

Related: 10 Reasons The Jungle Book Is Disney's Best Live-Action Remake

This is understandable, as the original book had a number of tales and characters, and is darker and more sinister than the light-hearted animation audiences know and love. From character changes to character cutting, there were a number of changes made from the original book when making this beloved animated classic.

A new predator is on the hunt
Shere Khan in The Jungle Book Photo: Disney It was International Tiger Day yesterday, so we're earning our stripes this week with a Streaming Spotlight dedicated to these Asian big cats. Jungle Cruise Ride Is Getting a Disney Parks Revamp in Response to Racism Charges
Image
Disney Parks has announced that they are going to overhaul the iconic Jungle Cruise ride because of its "negative depictions" of cultures. Many have criticized the ride for years, claiming that it presents a racist view of indigenous people. The Jungle Cruise is one of Disneyland's oldest rides and was personally overseen by Walt Disney. The news comes after it was announced that they intend to overhaul Splash Mountain because of its connections to the controversial 1946 movie Song of the South.

Disney officials say that their "Imagineers are constantly looking for opportunities to enhance experiences," which in this case, means they're making some big changes to the Jungle Cruise ride. "When it comes to updating classic attractions, they employ a very careful and thoughtful approach," Disney officials said in a statement. "In this particular case, Imagineers created a storyline that builds upon what people love the most while addressing negative depictions simultaneously.

How Much of Netflix's Mank Is a True Story? Here's the Deal
Image
Brought to life by a stellar cast of A-listers, David Fincher's Golden Era-styled Netflix drama, Mank, hops back and forth in time to develop a rounded picture of its troubled genius subject, screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz (Gary Oldman). A love letter to the early days of Hollywood showbiz, the black-and-white film mostly follows the development of Citizen Kane. But how much of Mank is based on a true story, and how much of it is proverbial movie magic? While there's the occasional Hollywood flourish here and there, much of Mank is rooted in reality.

Did Mankiewicz Write Citizen Kane at a Ranch?

Early in the film, Mankiewicz, an established critic-turned-screenwriter, emerges from a car accident. He ends up at a quiet ranch in Victorville, CA, with a secretary named Rita Alexander (Lily Collins), who helps him type up the script for Citizen Kane. Filmmaker Orson Welles (Tom Burke) occasionally phones...

The idea for the once-a-year supergroup came about four years ago when Gibbons and Flanigin, an Austin-based organist, were tapped to perform at the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame’s induction of B.B. King. By that point, most of King’s staples had been picked up by other artists, so the pair...

‘The Lion King’: We Took a Surreal Trip to the “Set” of Disney’s Remake
I've been in this entertainment racket long enough to see some strange and incredible things on film and TV sets. I've walked through a "torture chamber," watched Pennywise have a friendly chat with the crew, and strolled through a few stunning full-scale spaceships over the years, but I can safely say I've never been on a set quite like The Lion King. That's because it wasn't really a "set" at all, but a warehouse full of groundbreaking technology, where filmmaker Jon Favreau and his crew (many returning from their previous collaboration on The Jungle …...

Drama Desk Awards spurn off-Broadway nominees again in favor of Tony Awards contenders
While the Drama Desk Awards nominate a slew of off-Broadway fare, the winners invariably come from Broadway. That was once again the case on Sunday when all but one of the 16 champs in the musical races were Broadway productions while it was 8 of 12 on the play side.

This love of all things Broadway even extended to “Hadestown,” which was only in contention for new elements such as cast members after having contended here previously for it Off-Broadway run. It won four awards: Director (Rachel Chavkin), Featured Actor in a Musical (Andre De Shields), Lighting Design, and Sound Design.

One of its main rivals for Best Musical at the Tony Awards is “Tootsie,” which claimed victories for Best Actor (Santino Fontana), Book, Music, and Lyrics. But it was another contender, “The Prom,” that swooped in and claimed Best Musical despite losing all of its other bids.

The all Yiddish production of...

Insights: Doing A Better Job Counting What Counts In Social Media
Metrics can be a devil indeed.

Twitter, for instance, said as part of its recent earnings announcement that it would stop reporting its monthly active user headcount. Understandable, given that its MAUs keep dropping as the company dumps millions of nefarious, fake, and dead accounts. Instead, in a letter to shareholders, Twitter said it will report a number that's actually growing, monetizable daily active users.

Apple did something of the same thing last fall, telling distressed shareholders it would no longer report iPhone unit sales, which have plateaued in the maturing mobile sector. To its credit, Apple will instead will focus on reporting revenues, which literally are the bottom line, rather than the funny-money of some social-media metrics.

Which brings us to Facebook, scorched again this week by an official British investigation that deemed it a "digital gangster" (gotta love the Brits' lively way with the mother tongue), setting...

‘The Jungle’ Sets Move To San Francisco’s Fabled Curran Theater After Hit Runs In London And New York
A new predator is on the hunt
Exclusive: After acclaimed and sold-out runs in London and New York, current-events-based play The Jungle will have its West Coast premiere at the storied Curran Theater in San Francisco this spring.

Italian Box Office Sinks to Worst Result in a Decade
Box office returns in Italy dropped about 5% to €555 million ($631 million) in 2018, posting their worst result in a decade as Hollywood blockbusters drew in fewer Italian moviegoers than usual.

On the bright side, Italian films gained traction last year, scoring a 22% market share, up from 16% in 2017, marking the second-best showing in the past four years, according to box office analyst Robert Bernocchi. He said that this surpassed the results for homegrown pics in Spain and Germany, which clocked in at about 17% and 18%, respectively.

U.S. films in 2018 nabbed a total of €330 million ($375 million), accounting for 60% of Italy’s market share. That’s a solid result, but roughly six percentage points lower than in 2017, fueling the country’s overall box office drop. The year’s top grosser was Fox’s international hit “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which has pulled in more than €21 million ($23 million), and counting.

Italian ticket sales in 2018 were just shy of 86 million,...

San Sebastian: Fendrik, Bustamante, Huser, Roquet Top Co-production Forum
Pablo Fendrik
San Sebastian — Pablo Fendrik’s “Hermano Peligro,” Jayro Bustamante’s “La Llorona,” Matthias Huser’s “The Jungle” and Clara Roquet’s “Libertad” took one prize a piece at San Sebastian’s 7th Europe-Latin America Co-Production Forum, which wrapped Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, “The Sharks,” the first feature of Uruguay’s Lucia Garibaldi, swept San Sebastian’s Films in Progress.

While awards in the past have sometimes gone to little-known projects, this year saw plaudits shared by four of the strongest projects at the market in terms of director reknown, prestige producer backing or even, in the case of “La Llorona,” a sales market deal.

Winner of the Co-production Forum Best Project Award, “Hermano Peligro,” for instance, comes from a director. Pablo Fendrik, whose first three films, “The Mugger,” “Blood Appears” and “Ardor” have all been selected for the Cannes Festival, before he went on to co-direct two of the most distinguished...

'I was called Scarface at school': Trudie Styler on her teen drama directorial debut
After years of producing films, Styler has directed Freak Show, starring The Imitation Game’s Alex Lawther as a flamboyantly queer Texan teenager. But why does he get no action?

It’s early on a Tuesday morning. A car pulls up outside a north London members’ club. “Trudie is arriving!” someone calls. A small delegation goes out on to the pavement to meet her. “Trudie” is Trudie Styler. In a black beret with a little star on the front, the 64-year-old resembles an upmarket Wolfie Smith. The website of her film production company, Maven Pictures, tells us that she is “an award-winning and prolific film producer, director, environmentalist, human rights activist and Unicef ambassador”. She also has everyone’s personal number and has homes everywhere and is married to Sting and, no, we are not here to discuss their extended tantric sex sessions in which climax can be delayed for up to three weeks,...

Jon Favreau's The Jungle Book 2 is Being Developed From Unused Ideas From The Animated Film
Director Jon Favreau and writer Justin Marks are currently in the process of developing the script for The Jungle Book 2 for Disney. During a recent interview with /Film, Marks offered up some details on where they are getting their ideas for the sequel. One of the cool things that he reveals is that they dove into the Disney archives and pulled out a bunch of unused ideas for the original 1967 animated film and they are going to implement them into their story. Those ideas come from a script that Walt Disney rejected.

"In the second film, the idea is to go further through the Kipling but also go into some of the Disney resources from the ’67 film that maybe didn’t get to see the light of day in the first film. If you look back to Bill Peet’s work on the original film, some of which was thrown out by Walt Disney,...

How Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle proved doubters wrong
Simon Brew Jan 16, 2018

It's become a surprise commercial and critical hit - so what has the new Jumanji film got right?

Spoilers lie ahead for Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle.

Over the weekend, I was back at my local multiplex to see the quite wonderful Coco. On the way in, I saw the manager of said picture palace, and we had a bit of a chat. He’s a friendly man, and just the kind of manager you want: always checks that everyone’s okay, is there if anything goes wrong.

He’s also good for a bit of insider chat, too. And we got talking about Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle.

I don’t think I was alone in inwardly sighing when I first learned of a reboot/sequel to Jumanji. I don’t hold massive affection for the original (although I thought Zathura was great), but still enjoyed it.

Welcome to "The Jungle", You Should Leave Now

Once there, Larry teams up with guides Adi (Igusti Budianthika) and Budi (Agoes W Soedjarwo) to lead him through the thick jungle in search of the leopard. But Larry et al get more than they bargained for when the Javan Leopard they thought they were hunting turns out to be the legendary “forest demon.” And Larry’s adventurous urges lead them all into danger as they try to prove its existence.

Revolt of Nature Horror Films: The Must-Sees
Writer Lee Gambin calls them Natural Horror films, other writers call them Revenge of Nature or Nature Run Amok films and writer Charles Derry considers them a type of Apocalyptic Cinema.

Of course we’re speaking of one of the great horror subgenres for which we’ll employ writer Kim Newman’s tag: The Revolt of Nature.

Since the end of the 1990s, lovers of animal attack films have been subjected to copious amounts of uninspired Nu Image, Syfy Channel and Syfy Channel-like dreck like Silent Predators (1999), Maneater (2007) Croc (2007), Grizzly Rage (2007) and a stunning amount of terrible shark attack films to name a few that barely scratch the surface of a massive list.

These movies fail miserably to capture the intensity of the unforgettable films they are imitating and the recent wave seems to carry with it the intent of giving the Revolt of Nature horror film a bad name.

Ready for another suspense thriller? Well, I’m sure all Andrew Traucki fans out there are pretty excited about his upcoming The Jungle, but unfortunately, when it comes to release date – the only info we have is July/August 2013. Still, the good thing is that (at least) we have this new trailer to share, hope you’ll enjoy… So, in 2007, you feared the swamp. In 2010, you feared the ocean. This time – the fear is real, ’cause every habitat has a natural predator, and as you’re about to see – this place is definitely not natural. The Jungle is the third film in Traucki’s...

Patrick footage draws foreign buyers
Some 20 minutes of Patrick, director Mark Hartley.s re-imagining of Richard Franklin.s 1978 Australian psychological thriller, was screened for Us and international distributors at the Cannes Film Market.

Producer Antony I. Ginnane was pleased with the feedback and is hoping the film will be selected for the Toronto International Film Festival in October, which he believes would be the launch pad for a raft of sales.

In Cannes the international sales agent Bankside Films sold the pic, which stars Charles Dance, Sharni Vinson and Rachel Griffiths, to distributors in Turkey and the Middle East. Patrick will premiere at the Melbourne International Film Festival in July and will open in cinemas in October via Umbrella Entertainment.

Ginnane produced the original, which starred Robert Helpmann, Susan Penhaligon and Robert Thompson. It was a breakthrough for the producer as it was snapped up by theatrical distributors worldwide. It made a ton of money...
