'10 Things I Hate About You' Sequel Director Talks Adapting the Story for Modern Audiences
Image
10 Things I Hate About You, the 1999 teen comedy that defined an entire generation, is set to get a sequel. Gil Junger, who also directed the first film, is behind 10 Things I Hate About Dating, a project which he describes as having a similar vibe without being a direct sequel to the first entry. Junger says it is "a love story for people who've deleted the apps and re-downloaded them."

In 1999, teenagers didn't have any real idea what an app was or how relevant they would become to modern life. Instead, the original movie, inspired by Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, was a fresh and clever rendering of analog high school culture featuring Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Larisa Oleynik, among others. However, don't expect legacy characters to make an appearance in the sequel.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Junger spoke about the sequel he's developing...

10 Things I Hate About You | More films on the way
Andrew Keegan, Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, Gabrielle Union, Susan May Pratt, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, David Krumholtz, and Larisa Oleynik in 10 cosas que odio de ti (1999)
10 Things I Hate About You director Gil Junger has revealed that an entirely new trilogy of follow-ups is in development.

According to a new report, we could be in line to get a whole slew of projects following up on the classic 1999 rom-com, 10 Things I Hate About You.

Loosely based on William Shakespeare’s play The Taming Of The Shrew about a warring would-be couple, the 1999 film starred Julia Stiles and the late Heath Ledger. It retooled the play’s basic set-up into a classic American high school formula, with the teenage protagonists running afoul of each other at house parties, the football field and more, cleverly folding Shakespeare’s set-ups into genre conventions that we all know and love.

Gil Junger, the original film’s director, has revealed to People that over a quarter of a century later, the concept is being reimagined once more, with a trilogy being planned this time.

10 Things I Hate About You Almost Got A Very Dark Sequel (& I'm So Glad It Didn't)
Image
Mentions of suicide.

10 Things I Hate About You is one of the most popular and beloved teen movies and rom-coms of the 1990s, and though it told a complete story, it almost got a very dark sequel that Im glad never happened. Teen comedies and rom-coms went through a great run in the 1990s and early 2000s, and among the best is 10 Things I Hate About You. Directed by Gil Junger, 10 Things I Hate About You is a modern take on William Shakespeares comedy The Taming of the Shrew, set in an American high school in 1999.

10 Things I Hate About You follows new student Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who, after learning that his crush, Bianca (Larisa Oleynik), cant date anyone unless her older sister Kat (Julia Stiles) does, comes up with an elaborate plan with his friend: trick arrogant but wealthy senior Joey (Andrew Keegan) into paying...

The ‘10 Things I Hate About You’ Pseudo-Sequel That Was Never Released
Image
We’ve all seen 1999’s classic 10 Things I Hate About You starring Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger. We know it and we love it. It’s the perfect balance of comedy, romance, and just the right amount of teen angst. Plus, the cast is pitch-perfect, turning in stellar performances that elevate the movie even more. So, naturally, the filmmakers tried to capture that success again, doing so with a spin-off sequel that really had no ties whatsoever to the original film aside from a similar title. The film was never going to be as well received and beloved as its predecessor, but no one could have foreseen the issues it faced — so much so, that it never even saw the light of day. From production issues, delays, cast departures, and little funding, the film fell into a continuous downward spiral until it eventually crashed and burned. But what was...

Why Joseph Gordon-Levitt Tried Hard to Escape Doing 10 Things I Hate About You
Image
Few actors have enjoyed success in as wide a range of genres as Joseph Gordon Levitt, from sitcoms to romcoms, to thrillers to dramas. During a retrospective of his career, Levitt recalled one particular project he tried very hard to get out of, which was 10 Things I Hate About Life, the 1999 retelling of The Taming of the Shrew starring Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles.

"I'll be honest, I was not sold on doing 10 Things I Hate About You when I first read the script. I was like, 'I don't wanna do one of these high school romantic comedies. I want to do serious movies.' That's all I wanted to do when I was that age. I was going to arthouse cinemas and watching movies coming from Sundance. Watching Sling Blade and Reservoir Dogs and Soderbergh and Tarantino. That's what I wanted to do. And 10 Things I Hate About You...

Evan Rachel Wood at an event for 2012 Golden Globe Awards (2012)
Exclusive: Evan Rachel Wood has landed the female lead in 10 Things I Hate About Life, the film that is being mounted by the producing and directing duo behind the 1999 film 10 Things I Hate About You. That’s writer-director Gil Junger and producer Andrew Lazar, who’s producing with Junger and Intandem Films CEO Gary Smith. The Los Angeles-set romantic comedy isn’t a sequel to the 1999 film that starred Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Rather, it’s about a young man and woman who meet while each is attempting to commit suicide, and they find in each other some great reasons to keep on living. Production begins shortly in La. Last seen in The Ides Of March, Wood has several films coming up including The Necessary Death Of Charlie Countryman. She’s repped by CAA.
