Small Town Secrets Haunt ‘The Confession’ Premiere
Image
Every small town carries its stories, but in Will Canon’s new feature The Confession, those stories fester into something far darker. Making its debut at this year’s FrightFest in London, the film reimagines the legend of the Pied Piper against the backdrop of rural Texas, exposing a family history bound up in violence, secrecy and supernatural menace.

Italia Ricci leads the cast as Naomi, a struggling musician who returns to her childhood home with her young son, Dylan. While unpacking the remnants of her father’s life, she stumbles upon an unsettling recording in which he confesses to a brutal murder. The revelation would be disturbing enough, but his claim that he acted to protect himself from a mysterious evil force raises deeper questions. As Naomi begins to notice her son’s increasingly troubling behaviour, the roots of her family’s past intertwine with the sinister folklore of her hometown.

Welcome to Derry has potential to be HBO’s creepiest horror series yet
Image
The It films were terrifying in their own right — creepy sewers, strange visions, and a clown you’d cross continents to avoid. But there’s something about Welcome to Derry that feels different — it’s just not about replaying old nightmares, but something even more unsettling we are not aware of. This is ground zero for the fear, the moment the town’s curse took root.

And now, we’re finally going to see just how far Derry’s darkness spreads.

From what we know, HBO isn’t rushing the scares. Instead, it appears that they are creating an atmosphere that gradually seeps into you with each episode. The kind that makes you mistrust every shadow, every flicker of light, and every neighbor who smiles a bit too broadly. The series will stretch back decades before the Losers’ Club, filling in the blanks the films only hinted at.

This isn...

Taylor Kitsch Reacts to Channing Tatum Replacing Him as Gambit in MCU
Image
X-Men Origins: Wolverine star Taylor Kitsch addresses being replaced by Channing Tatum in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Kitsch played Gambit, a prisoner of William Stryker on Three Mile Island, who helped Wolverine locate it and later saved him from a falling cooling tower. Tatum was considered for the role in the movie, but due to scheduling conflicts, the star had to drop out.

In Deadpool & Wolverine, Tatum made a cameo appearance as Gambit. He's also scheduled to play a part in Avengers: Doomsday, in which he is expected to reprise the Cajun superhero.

In an interview with ScreenRant about Prime Video's The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, set to premiere on August 27, Kitsch, who reprises his role as Ben Edward, talked briefly about being replaced by Tatum as Gambit in the MCU. The star admitted that he hasn't seen Tatum's version and clarified that "Gambit wasn't in the cards" for him.

Lou Diamond Phillips and Elisha Pratt on Getting the Details Right in Indigenous Crime Drama ‘Keep Quiet’
Image
Tribal warfare is in the air in Vincent Grashaw’s crime drama Keep Quiet. Lou Diamond Phillips stars as Teddy, a weathered tribal cop who, with his new trainee, Sandra (Dana Namerode), must find ruthless fugitive Richie, played by Elisha Pratt (Killers of the Flower Moon, True Detective). After all, Richie’s return to their rural Indigenous reservation “has exposed its darkest secrets and could ignite a violent gang war.”

That is the menacing set-up for Keep Quiet, which world premieres in an out-of-competition spot at the 78th edition of the Locarno Film Festival on Friday, a year after the director debuted boxing drama Bang Bang at the Swiss fest.

Nick Stahl, Irene Bedard, Lane Factor and Kimberly Guerrero round out the ensemble cast of the film, which is based on a screenplay by Zach Montague. Visit Films is handling international sales on the project.

Jake Gyllenhaal's The Guilty Is A Remake Of A Much Better Movie Streaming For Free
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

If a movie is going to be mostly close-up reactions of its lead actor, then the actor needs to have an expressive face. Jake Gyllenhaal, who more than fits the bill, faced this challenge in the 2021 thriller "The Guilty," directed by Antoine Fuqua (who used unorthodox filming methods to shoot the movie during the pandemic) and scripted by "True Detective" creator Nic Pizzolatto.

In "The Guilty," Gyllenhaal plays Joe Baylor, a 911 dispatcher in Los Angeles. The film takes place almost entirely during one of his shifts. Joe (who has a haunted past) is pretty dispassionate about his job... at first. Then a woman named Emily (Riley Keough) calls him, claiming that she's being kidnapped. Trying to help her from a distance, Joe discovers the culprit is likely her abusive ex-husband Henry (Peter Sarsgaard), but gradually realizes his assumptions about the...

‘True Detective’ Season 5 sets its next haunting case in New York
Image
The anthology series moves from frozen Alaska to Jamaica Bay in 2027

“True Detective” Season 4 was my favorite since the original dropped more than a decade ago — and I’m not alone. “Night Country” gave the series its highest ratings ever, brought in Jodie Foster for a killer performance, and proved that new showrunner Issa López knows exactly what she’s doing. Now, López is back to run the show again for Season 5, which is heading to Jamaica Bay, New York for a brand-new mystery. It won’t land until 2027, but it’s already one of HBO’s most anticipated returns. Here’s everything we know so far about the fifth season of “True Detective.”

Everything you need to know about ‘True Detective’ Season 5:

When does the new season drop?

Can you watch for free?

Why HBO Max?

Matthew McConaughey is said to have lost the role of Jack Dawson in Titanic after refusing to take direction during his audition with director James Cameron. The 55-year-old actor, known for his Texan drawl and easy charm, auditioned opposite Kate Winslet during early casting sessions for the 1997 blockbuster, and the claim he botched his try-out for the hit movie comes from producer Jon Landau’s posthumous memoir, The Bigger Picture, which was excerpted in journalist Matthew Belloni’s newsletter What I’m Hearing.Jon is said to have written: “We brought (Matthew) in to do a scene with Kat“You want to check for chemistry, not just how people look on film but how they interact. 4 Years After HBO's Best Small Town Crime Drama Ended, a Potential Season 2 Is Finally Being Addressed
Image
It has become a common feat for miniseries to be released, telling stories which are slightly too large for a feature film and too short for a full blown multi-season series. Over the past decade or so, a number of these shows which one could arguably call masterpieces, have premiered. One of them is HBO's crime series, Mare of Easttown. The miniseries premiered in April 2021 to critical reception holding an impressive critic score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes. It is not surprising that there has been somewhat of a clamor for a second season since then. However, one of the stars of the show, that served arguably as a replacement for True Detective, has offered a disappointing update regarding a potential second season.

Over the course of its run, Julianne Nicholson played Lori Ross, the childhood bestfriend of the series protagonist, Mare. Since her time on Mare of Easttown, Nicholson has...

Real Reason Why Taylor Kitsch Will Not Return for ‘Friday Night Lights’ Revival Series
Image
Before we go any further, one big question: why did Friday Night Lights really have to end? The critically acclaimed Texas-set drama, which followed the highs and heartbreaks of a small-town high school football team in Dillon, aired its final episode in 2011.

Despite its devoted fanbase and multiple Emmy wins, the show literally teetered on the edge of cancellation due to low ratings. Of course, NBC pulled the plug after two seasons, but thanks to a Hail Mary deal with DirecTV, Friday Night Lights ran for three more seasons before it officially ended.

Today, it’s been 14 years since we last heard Coach Taylor give one of his iconic pep talks, and guys, we might hear it very soon again. While a Friday Night Lights movie was teased by Peter Berg, sadly, it was off the table. Fast-forward to 2024, Peacock outbid Netflix for rights to a full TV reboot with Og showrunner Jason Katims.

Henry Cavill’s 14% Rotten Tomatoes Thriller Soars Past Tom Cruise’s $1.5 Billion Hit on Streaming
Image
Paramount+ truly is an odd streaming service; for instance, it's perhaps the only place where a totally undermarketed direct-to-digital title could outperform an all-time blockbuster. A situation like this is unfolding on the platform as we speak, with the underseen thriller film Night Hunter ranking above one of the greatest action films ever made, Top Gun: Maverick. Interestingly, the stars of both films — Henry Cavill and Tom Cruise — worked together in the sixth (and most successful) Mission: Impossible film, Mission: Impossible: Fallout.

According to FlixPatrol, Night Hunterwas the third-most-watched title on Paramount+ on August 5, behind the action film Novocaine, and the Brazilian Oscar-winner I'm Still Here. In fourth place was Cruise's Top Gun: Maverick. Released in 2022, the movie was largely credited for having revived the theatrical marketplace after two years of turbulence. It went on to gross nearly $1.5 billion worldwide, and earned an Academy Award nomination in the Best Picture category.

I Still Can’t Get Over Matthew McConaughey’s Hilarious ‘King of the Hill’ Cameo
Image
Matthew McConaughey‘s hysterical role in the animated drama King of the Hill is still remembered by fans. No one can ever get over the actor’s charm and Texas drawl vocals that he brought to life in Rad Thibodeaux in the show’s Season 3, Episode 14, ‘The Wedding of Bobby Hill.’

The role fit the actor perfectly as Rad is shown as a smooth-talking but ultimately self-centred concert promoter, much like the actor himself. In an interview (via Interview Magazine) alongside actor Glenn Powell, Matthew McConaughey once reflected on his career about saying yes or not to certain roles, quoting,

“I’ve said no to things, where I’m like, “Am I being too safe, or am I ferociously chasing what I want?” Because sometimes you can get paralyzed in the noes.”

He further stated,

“I’ve had plenty of times in my career where I’m like, “I don...

Pierce Brosnan will always be known for his work as James Bond, but just a few years after he suited up as 007 for the final time, he led a star-studded thriller that’s finally coming back to streaming. Brosnan stars alongside Woody Harrelson (True Detective), Salma Hayek (Grown Ups), and Don Cheadle (Iron Man 2) in After the Sunset, a 2004 heist film following a master thief who pulls off his last big score, and an FBI agent who promised he’d capture him. After previously not streaming anywhere, Netflix has swooped in and made the film available to watch for all subscribers starting at the beginning of this month on August 1. After the Sunset earned abysmal scores of 18% from critics and 52% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and the film grossed only $62 million at the box office against a $60 million budget.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1994) – The Test of Time
Image
Horror franchises can be a goldmine for studios and theaters alike. They are typically on the inexpensive side to make and typically bring back not only a good profit but also more than enough to keep churning them out. Even straight to video franchises like what Hellraiser became or the Puppet Master and other monster collaborations from Full Moon continue to get made and sought out by fans. While we have the newer mainstays like Insidious, The Purge, and the recently up in the air Saw franchises, the classics continue to try and even pass between rights holders to get new looks. One of the most surprising franchises that somehow became a slasher mainstay has two big anniversaries this year. Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III is fun, and I plan to dissect that closer to Thanksgiving for its 35th anniversary but the more controversial Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation is 30 now,...

Ten years after its launch, horror streamer Shudder has grown and retained a loyal audience. The secret? Backburning trends and analytics in favor of the personal taste of a dedicated team of fanatics.

It certainly is for me,” says Shudder senior VP of programming and acquisitions, Samuel Zimmerman, who has an encyclopedic knowledge of horror movies. “When Shudder first started, I was given a lot of support. ‘You’re the curator of this, because Shudder is meant to feel hand-picked, programmed for people who love the genre.’ As we’ve grown, sticking to that ambition has been really important, because it shines a light on who we are as a team.”

Shudder started as a niche streaming service launched by AMC Networks midway through the run of the flagship channel’s massive success with “The Walking Dead.” Originally, the platform was focused...

The Fate of Eric Bana's New 'True Detective' Replacement Netflix Series Has Been Decided

Although Eric Bana’s Special Agent Kyle Turner may have closed the case on the mysterious death of Lucy Cook (Ezra Franky), the case isn’t yet closed on Netflix’s breakaway crime drama, Untamed. Today, the streamer announced that its latest title to take off like wildfire has been renewed for a second season. At this point, it isn’t clear whether Bana or other characters from the debut season will return or if the production will take on a similar layout to True Detective and move into anthology territory. We can presume that the next chapter will take us to a different National Park and away from the towering granite cliffs of Yosemite in California’s Sierra Nevada region, but aside from that, there’s a lot up in the air. Still, those who flocked to the incredibly bingeable six-episode series will be happy to know that there...

Director Cary Joji Fukunaga’s Blood on Snow is heating up with its latest cast addition.

Pilou Asbæk, known for his work on Game of Thrones and Foundation, will co-star in the indie film adaptation of author Jo Nesbo’s 2015 crime thriller, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively. Previously announced castmembers include Benedict Cumberbatch, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Eva Green, Emma Laird and Ben Mendelsohn.

Blood on Snow centers on hit man Olav (Taylor-Johnson), who falls in love with his mob boss’ wife after being hired to kill her. Production on the film began earlier this year in Latvia.

Details of Asbæk’s role have not yet been revealed. THR previously reported that Cumberbatch stepped in to replace Tom Hardy, who was set to star and produce before exiting due to a scheduling conflict.

Netflix’s New Series Is Being Called a 10/10 Thriller(Photo Credit –Netflix)

Jurassic Park had Sam Neill running from dinosaurs. However, he is now back, but the monsters here wear human faces. Untamed, the new Netflix miniseries, dropped without much fuss and is already being called a 10/10 by viewers who can’t stop watching, according to Unilad. The show, released on July 17, did not take long for people to start raving about it, especially that opening scene, which feels like it grabs you by the throat and refuses to let go.

Untamed Netflix Series Opens With A Jaw-Dropping Scene

Untamed begins with two climbers scaling a cliff in Yosemite when something falls from above, and it is not a rock, but a body. A woman’s corpse plummets, snags the climbers’ rope, and hangs there, swinging in the air. That is how the show starts, yes, you read that right.

‘Lanterns’ Star Reveals He Drops More F-Bombs in the Series Than Ever Before [Exclusive]
Image
James Gunn’s new DC Universe is rapidly taking shape, and while all eyes are on Superman as the launchpad for this ambitious reboot, Lanterns is quietly becoming just as crucial. The HBO Max original series is the first live-action show set in the rebooted Dcu and aims to reintroduce Green Lantern mythology in a grounded, serialized format. And now, straight out of San Diego Comic-Con 2025, Lanterns just dropped some new intel — but during Steve Weintraub's conversation with the star and showrunner of The Rookie.

Nathan Fillion is everywhere in the Dcu — literally. After debuting as Guy Gardner in Superman, he’ll pop up again in Peacemaker Season 2 and later take center stage in Lanterns, the mystery series that’s shaping up to be one of the most unique projects in Gunn’s slate. Why Fox Canceled Kevin Bacon's The Following After Three Seasons
Image
In April 2025, Kevin Bacon's horror series, "The Bondsman" took over the Prime Video charts, signalling the arrival of what looked to be yet another popular series for the streamer. Just one month later, Prime Video canceled "The Bondsman" in a surprising turn of events that reminded us all of the fickle nature of the streaming sphere. For Bacon, however, this wasn't the first time he'd fronted an initially popular show with a grizzly streak that was cancelled before its time.

Back in 2013, the actor debuted as former FBI agent Ryan Hardy in "The Following." The crime thriller series was created by Kevin Williamson, who's best known for writing "Scream" and several of its sequels, as well as creating the archetypal teen drama series "Dawson's Creek." In "The Following," however, Williamson indulged an even more violent and gritty tone, with Bacon's Hardy tracking down serial killer Joe Carroll (James Purefoy...

HBO Max’s TV library is stacked -- and still an awesome deal at $10 per month
Image
It’s the one streamer I plan to keep as long as I love great TV.

I’ve been subscribed to just about every streamer for years, and HBO Max has always been one of my favorites. It’s home to some of the best TV shows ever made, across almost every genre. Larry David is basically my personal idol, so the fact that it houses “Curb Your Enthusiasm” — a show that’s shaped my comedic sensibility as much as “Seinfeld” did before it — already makes it special to me.

Now that the service has rebranded back to HBO Max as of July 2025, I thought it was the perfect time to take a closer look at its TV series library, much like I did for Apple TV+ last week. I’ll be breaking down what HBO Max does best, where its lineup feels thin, how often new shows drop, and...

Netflix's Mystery Thriller Becomes Global Streaming Hit Less Than A Week After Debut
Image
Netflix's new murder mystery series Untamed has skyrocketed to the streamer's number 1 spot in both U.S. and global charts. After releasing on Thursday, July 17, 2025, the six-part miniseries has already amassed an enormous 24.6 million views before its opening week has even concluded.

Untamed is the second #1 hit Netflix series created by Mark. L Smith in 2025. Eric Bana leads the cast of Untamed as Kyle Turner, an Isb federal agent who investigates the mysterious death of a young girl in Yosemite National Park.

Untamed accrued just under 120 million views in only five days after it premiered on Netflix last week. Although Untamed was written as a miniseries, these massive streaming numbers suggest that it could evolve into an anthology series similar to True Detective.

“Andor” and “Splitsville” star Adria Arjona is set to join Michael B. Jordan in “The Thomas Crown Affair,” Amazon MGM Studios’ reimagining of the classic romantic heist film.

Arjona joins a star-studded ensemble cast featuring Kenneth Branagh, Lily Gladstone, Danai Gurira, Pilou Asbæk and Aiysha Hart, stepping into the co-lead role following Taylor Russell’s exit. After news broke on Friday, the studio and producers received a flurry of incoming calls about the highly sought-after part and moved quickly to secure a new star. Kevin Feige confirms Mahershala Ali is still attached to the MCU Blade reboot, which will be set in modern day
Wesley Snipes in Blade: Cazador de vampiros (1998)
The fact that there was going to be a Blade reboot as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starring Mashershala Ali in the title role, came as a huge surprise when the announcement was made at the San Diego Comic-Con back in July of 2019… but we’ve reached the six year anniversary of that announcement, and we still haven’t seen a new Blade movie. The closest we’ve gotten is Ali making a vocal cameo as the character at the end of Eternals back in 2021. Things have been looking dire, with screenwriters and directors coming and going – but while talking to a group of journalists at Marvel Studios last Friday, studio president Kevin Feige confirmed that Ali is still attached to star in an MCU Blade movie, which may have finally found its story and setting.

Last year, we heard a rumor that Mahershala Ali is getting “increasingly frustrated...

Every True Detective Season, Ranked From Worst to Best
Image
Ever since its premiere in 2018, True Detective has become one of the best anthology series on TV. With new suspense, themes, and atmosphere in each season, the show has unraveled four different mysteries, some of which are known for their noir style and great performances, while some miss the mark.

However, despite that, each season delivered its best with its stellar cast, story, acting, and great execution. Still, there has been a progression with every season that affects the audience’s reception and their status as the best, making some emerge as the best, while others remain disappointing.

4. True Detective: Night Country (Season 4)

Created by Nic Pizzolatto and starring Jodie Foster, Season 4, titled Night Country, takes the audience to the eternal night of rural Alaska. And with a stellar cast including Foster alongside Kali Reis, this season had all the makings of a standout addition to the anthology series. However,...

True Detective: What Does 'Time Is A Flat Circle' Mean?
Image
Few shows, if any, ever reach the level of "True Detective" season 1. As trite as it's become to cite this season of television as one of the finest ever made, it doesn't change the fact that writer Nic Pizzolatto, director Cary Joji Fukunaga, and stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson created something truly special with those eight episodes of television. Leaving aside the incredible depth contained in the show's writing, its historical and literary influences, and the standout performances, one of season 1's most enduring contributions to pop culture remains the phrase "time is a flat circle." But what does this actually mean?

At this point, the phrase has been memed to the point it has lost most of its meaning. You'll likely see some version of the words used any time some cultural event occurs that's vaguely reminiscent of a past event. But there was much more meaning behind...

‘Delirium’ Netflix Review: A Confusing Mishmash Of Gangster Drama & Mental Illness
Image
Nonlinear storytelling wasn’t invented by Christopher Nolan; it’s a tool that’s as old as the medium of literature and motion pictures itself. Among the earliest examples are apparently Homer’s Iliad, Vyasa’s Mahabharata, and several stories in The Arabian Nights. When it comes to cinema, Buster Keaton’s Sherlock Jr., Alfred Hitchcock’s Rebecca, and Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane can be credited for both perfecting this gimmick and making it palatable to the general public. As for television, shows like True Detective (the first season), Pachinko, Sharp Objects, Dark, and The Haunting of Hill House are the pinnacle of nonlinear narratives, at least for me, primarily because the timeline jumps gave the themes a lot of depth and fleshed out the characters in a way that wouldn’t have been possible if it was given to us straight. However, much like anything that’s popular, talentless...

Jack Reacher's Creator Feels One Book Can't Be Adapted For The Prime Video Series
Image
"Reacher" has been a major hit for Prime Video and, as such, looks set to continue for some time to come. Viewers certainly aren't going anywhere if season 3 of the show is anything to go by. After a few things went wrong with season 2 of "Reacher," the series came out swinging for season 3, delivering a run of episodes that proved the best action show on TV has gotten its mojo back. As series lead Alan Ritchson's star continues to rise in the wake of the show's success, then, it seems the only future hurdle Prime Video and the "Reacher" writers will have to overcome is their lead's availability.

One problem they certainly don't have to worry about is source material. With 29 books in Lee Child's Jack Reacher series, as well as a short story collection and the promise of more novels to come courtesy of Child's brother,...

Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for the finale of Untamed.Sam Neill will forever be known to theatergoers as Dr. Alan Grant from the Jurassic Park franchise. However, on Thursday, he left the field of paleontology behind to tackle Netflix's Untamed, a murder mystery miniseries set in the great outdoors and invoking the likes of True Detective. Beyond simply starring in it, his character, Chief Park Ranger Paul Souter, ended up being the lynchpin holding the case together. The series follows National Park Service special agent Kyle Turner's (Eric Bana) investigation into the death of a Jane Doe in Yosemite, which unravels the dark secrets hidden in the wilderness, including the lineage of the victim, revealed to be Lucy Cook. At the end of the trail, everything led back to Paul, culminating in what Bana described as a traumatic moment that shattered the respect Kyle once had...

Mare of Easttown Season 2: Why Kate Winslet Shouldn’t Return After HBO’s 92% Rated Misfire
Image
HBO is toying with the idea of bringing back Mare of Easttown, the critically acclaimed miniseries that not only earned Kate Winslet an Emmy but also carved out a permanent place in the peak-tv canon. With such a strong fan following and a trophy case to back it up, it’s no surprise the network is weighing a continuation. But here’s the thing: picking up a story that was already complete can be a fast track to unraveling everything that made it work in the first place.

Just take a look at True Detective. The show came out swinging with a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and tons of hype. But the later seasons lost that spark, and it didn’t take long for the buzz to wear off. It stands as a warning, and Mare might be facing the same potential pitfall.

Netflix’s New Western Replacement For ‘Yellowstone’ and ‘True Detective’ Lands Unexpected Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Netflix’s gripping new crime series is now streaming globally, and after drawing tonal comparisons to past shows like Yellowstone and True Detective, everyone is curious if the quality stacks up. Eric Bana and Sam Neill star in Untamed, the new Netflix show following a National Parks Service agent who investigates a shocking death at Yosemite National Park. Reviews for Untamed are finally in, and the show has earned a strong 83% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and an 89% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. These scores will lead to “certified fresh” and “verified hot” labels if they can hold strong with enough reviews. These are also much better scores than Netflix’s latest outing, The Waterfront, which earned 63% and 67% scores from critics and audiences, respectively, on Rotten Tomatoes. It sounds like Untamed is well worth watching.

Seven Pounds is streaming on Rakuten TV globally, where it’s become one of the most popular movies on the platform in several countries, including Estonia.
