People with an Amazon Prime Video subscription can catch one film that is being "elevated" on the global streaming platform. Vertical's Elevation, the 2024 post-apocalyptic sci-fi film led by Captain America: Brave New World star Anthony Mackie, is currently sitting in the top 10 on Prime Video's streaming charts. While the film itself did not get great reviews, the sci-fi actioner is clearly making waves for people at home.

As of this article's publication, Elevation is currently sitting in the number three spot on Prime Video's Top 10 films chart globally, according to FlixPatrol. It is behind two other action films: Heads of State, starring Idris Elba and John Cena as politicians-turned-action heroes, and The Accountant 2, a thriller starring Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal. The high rankings for Elevation is good news for a film that underperformed at the box office, grossing less than $4 million on a budget of about $18 million.

Coming straight off of his fearless, peerlessly playful performance in M. Night Shyamalan’s “Trap,” Josh Hartnett is carrying another wild and playful genre experiment with “Fight or Flight.” Hartnett stars as an exiled American agent, Lucas Reyes, who gets a shot at redemption aboard a flight from Bangkok to San Francisco. All he has to do is track down and identify the “mysterious, international high-value asset known as The Ghost.” Oh, and the plane is full of assassins trying to kill both of them.

The film marks the feature debut of director James Madigan, who has an extensive background in visual effects, from “The Da Vinci Code” to the “Red” films, as well as second unit credits on films including “The Meg” and “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.” It’s also a showcase for Hartnett, who threw himself into doing “100% of his stunts,” as Madigan recently told Jimmy Fallon.

Chris Pine will lead and produce Run the Night, an upcoming action film from Lionsgate and Hidden Pictures, with worldwide rights secured by the studio ahead of its sales launch at the Cannes Film Market.

Set in Amsterdam, the film follows a banker who becomes the target of the city’s criminal underworld. The movie marks the feature directorial debut of Robert Alonzo, a hugely well-respected second unit director and stunt coordinator who had worked on major titles including “Deadpool,” “The Batman” and “The Flash,” to name a few. Lionsgate has acquired worldwide rights to the title and will launch sales in Cannes.

“Run the Night” follows a banker, accused of betraying the Penose (the Dutch mob), who is dumped naked in the heart of Amsterdam with a $10 million bounty on his head. Hunted by the city’s most violent gangs, he must fight his way across the city by dawn to save the lives of his wife and child — a mission that reveals he was never just the money guy.

Bleecker Street has nabbed U.S. rights to “Bone Lake,” a darkly comedic survival thriller from director Mercedes Bryce Morgan.

The film, which premiered at Fantastic Fest in 2024, will land in theaters on Oct. 10. Mister Smith, a British distribution company, has come on board to represent the international rights, which will launch at Cannes Film Festival.

“Bone Lake” follows a couple whose romantic vacation at a secluded lakeside estate is upended when they’re forced to share the mansion with another mysterious couple. Their dream getaway spirals into a “nightmarish maze of sex, lies and manipulation, bringing terrifying secrets to light and triggering a bloody battle for survival,” according to the official logline. While the world has been fascinated with the mysteries of ancient Egypt since Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon stole all the credit for the glorious reveal of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922 from the local diggers and historians, the truth of those mysteries rest better in the hands of Egyptians today. And there are still mysteries and wonders aplenty, from the way its colorful mythology slowly blended — syncretized — with the Roman occupiers that gradually wore away the country's golden monarchy, to its early understandings of science and math that remain lost.

It's a tough period of time for amateur historians who love the occasional pop culture dive; unlike other history buffs with their Medieval costume dramas and the upcoming Christopher Nolan-helmed version of "The Odyssey," there's not much that truly digs into the dynastic periods of Egypt. It's mostly Biblical-era epics, the occasional Roman overlap, and some hilariously bad science fiction...

I was seated in the theater for Smile 2 when a trailer for George Nolfi’s Elevation came on. I was intrigued, largely because I hadn’t heard of it and have a profound, insatiable interest in monster movies. And then, I forgot the film existed.

Most of that is Smile 2’s fault. I couldn’t think about anything else for weeks, okay, and if you’ve seen Smile 2, you’ll know exactly what I mean. Months later, I was browsing Max when I saw Elevation was available to stream. My time had come! Better still, I enjoyed the film. I’m not the only one either, since Elevation has recently cracked the Top 10 on Max.

Before Captain America: Brave New World, Anthony Mackie battled monsters in the post-apocalyptic film Elevation, which was released in select theaters in 2024. Although critics dismissed the film as another War of the Words knockoff, audiences have grown fond of it, as evidenced by its fresh audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. But now more people can discover the underrated sci-fi flick as it arrives on a new streaming home this month.

Starting Feb. 21, Elevation is now available to stream on Max. The film follows Mackie as a single father in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by massive, alien-like creatures. Alongside fellow MCU star Morena Baccarin, and Maddie Hasson, the trio venture beyond "The Line," where monsters live on Earth below 8,000 feet. In 1961, Richard Matheson published a short story called "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" that became a cornerstone of TheTwilight Zone franchise. Rod Serling's original series included an instant-classic adaptation that has been endlessly referenced, and remade twice. 1983's Twilight Zone: The Movie, and Jordan Peele's 2019 reboot series both tackled the tale in contrasting ways, and watching the three versions together reveals much about why the Matheson story is so special.

The 1963 Twilight Zone episode "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" featured a performance from William Shatner that makes up for the low-budget creature he sees on the wing of his plane. 20 years later, George "Mad Max" Miller remade the story with advanced FX for Twilight Zone: The Movie, and in 2019 the reboot series included "Nightmare at 30,000 Feet," a modern take that may be the most paranoid of them all.

Morena Baccarin and Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson have been cast in the upcoming live-action feature film “Masters of the Universe,” based on the iconic Mattel franchise, Amazon MGM and Mattel announced on Monday.

Baccarin is playing the Sorceress and Jóhannesson is playing Fisto. Both actors would star alongside Nicholas Galitzine in the role of He-Man, Camila Mendes, who is playing Teela, Alison Brie as “Evil-Lyn,” and Idris Elba (Duncan/Man-at-Arms), which TheWrap first exclusively reported.

Travis Knight is directing the film from a screenplay by Chris Butler. Plot details are being kept under wraps for the film, which will be released exclusively in theaters worldwide on June 5, 2026. The movie will be produced by Escape Artists and Mattel Films.

“I’m speaking to you from jail,” producer Brad Fuller says as he appears on a video call from Brisbane, Australia. And, sure enough, he’s sitting directly in front of a large window with horizontal white bars running across it. This is, he tells us, the set of Anaconda – presumably some back office somewhere – his latest project, and one of a string of genre movies he’s steered over the past quarter of a century.

Remakes – particularly of genre films – are hardly a new phenomenon, but the upcoming Anaconda promises to be rather different. It stars Jack Black and Paul Rudd as two filmmakers (a director and actor respectively) whose careers have hit the skids.

In a final attempt to make something of themselves, the pair head to the Amazon and attempt to shoot their own low-budget remake of a 1997 creature feature called – you guessed it – Anaconda. After the news that George Nolfi would be the new writer on Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's New Jedi Order film, it's only fitting that outlets want to get whatever details they can about the upcoming film starring Daisy Ridley as Rey Skywalker. Film Stories did just that, asking the writer about how he approached the new position while speaking to him about his new movie Elevation.

Nolfi, who has written for the Jason Bourne films as well as the heist movie Ocean's 12, has a love for politics and studied that and philosophy in the past. It's part of what pulled him towards George Lucas' work, which, remember folks, is well documented to always be political. George Lucas has stated that these are "themes that run all the way through Star Wars," with America being the Empire for the original trilogy and him being against George Bush-era policies during the prequel trilogies.

Ahead of Elevation’s UK release, we talk to George Nolfi about monsters, the state of original screenwriting, and his plans for Star Wars.

Since his career began over two decades ago, writer-director George Nolfi has brought a level of thoughtfulness to his genre movies. In The Adjustment Bureau, his 2011 directorial debut, he adapted a Philip K Dick short story as a philosophical sci-fi romance starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt – something that might have wrong-footed audiences expecting an action thriller in the vein of earlier adaptations of Dick’s other work, most obviously the ultra-violent blockbuster, Total Recall.

Prior to that, Nolfi’s spec script, Honor Among Thieves, was bought up and re-christened as Ocean’s Twelve (2004) – director Steven Soderbergh’s smart, sparky all-star heist comedy. Nolfi also lent his writing talent to The Bourne Supremacy (albeit uncredited) and The Bourne Ultimatum (credited).

Asking a filmmaker about their forthcoming Marvel or Star Wars project is generally a fool’s errand. Not least because they’ve signed so many non-disclosure agreements that they essentially can’t say anything.

All the same, when we spoke to director George Nolfi last week about his latest film Elevation – due for release on Prime Video UK on the 8th February – we could hardly avoid the (metaphorical) elephant in the room. Only a couple of days earlier, Hollywood trade outlets had reported that Nolfi had been hired as the screenwriter on one of Lucasfilm’s Star Wars projects.

If you’re unfamiliar, this is the sequel announced about two years ago, designed to bring back Daisy Ridley as Rey, and with documentary filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy making her narrative feature debut.

With a variety of films headed to Max next month, movie lovers won’t have to venture far in order to find something worth watching in February. Whether viewers want to laugh, cry, or lose themselves inside a fantasy world, Max has something for them. Next month might include Valentine’s Day, but that certainly doesn’t mean romance movies will be the only option.

While there will be plenty of romantic comedies for fans of love, Max also has various action, drama, horror, and fantasy films scheduled to arrive in February. Anthony Mackie is set to make his solo Marvel debut next month with Captain America: Brave New World. As one of the most anticipated movies of this year, the hype around it is phenomenal. While Mackie is riding the hype to its fullest, there is one wish that remains unachieved for the star.

We Live in Time is a romantic comedy-drama film directed by John Crowley from a screenplay by Nick Payne. The 2024 film follows the relationship of a young couple over the course of a decade as they go through the ups and downs of life together while learning and growing with each other.

Anthony Mackie is already one of the biggest names in Hollywood, and his stardom is about to grow even bigger as he leads his first solo Captain America movie, Brave New World, which is due in theaters in less than one month on February 14. However, before he ventures back to Marvel for the first time since 2021’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, he teamed up with a Deadpool veteran for a sci-fi action thriller that’s coming soon to streaming. Mackie stars alongside Morena Baccarin in Elevation, the 2024 film that grossed only $3 million at the box office and is coming to Max on February 21. The post-apocalyptic sci-fi epic earned scores of 52% from critics and 80% from general audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite what you might have heard on the internet, the Rey Skywalker movie is not dead. In fact, it just tapped George Nolfi to be its screenwriter.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the writer and director has been brought on to write the film, which will see the return of Daisy Ridley in the role of Rey Skywalker. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is still on as the director, making her jump from documentaries to narrative features.

Daisy Ridley’s “Star Wars” movie is still alive. Lucasfilm has hired George Nolfi (“The Borne Ultimatum”) to write the script for the long-gestating follow-up to 2019’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” which is still set to be the feature directorial debut for Oscar-winning documentarian Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

By the time Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy officially announced the project and Ridley’s involvement at Star Wars Celebration in April 2023, the film — which currently has the working title of “Star Wars: New Jedi Order” — had already lost its initial screenwriting team of Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson (“The Strain”). Despite the fast-tracking of Shawn Levy’s standalone Star Wars movie with Ryan Gosling in talks, Daisy Ridley's Rise of Skywalker sequel is getting another pass, this time by writer George Nolfi.

Filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is still attached to direct the story about Rey Skywalker, 15 years after the events of 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. The plot is rumored that Rey, the granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine, will oversee a school of Jedis.

Previous scribes on the Rey story included Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. In April 2023 Peaky Blinder creator Steven Knight was also making a go at it, but stepped away last October.

Ridley told Deadline at SXSW last year that “I know bits and bobs” about the sequel. “I know there’s an introduction of new characters,” the actress said, “I don’t know about previous characters” — and that includes her twin flame Kylo Ren.

Lyrical Media chief Alex Black got swarmed with “a million emails and messages” on the day it was announced his young production company was teaming with Ryder Picture Company on a film adaptation of Emily Henry’s best-selling 2024 rom-com “Funny Story,” screen-written by the author herself.
