#Kuberaa ~ The kind of film that truly feels like cinema. Despite running for 3 hours, it kept me hooked throughout. Without relying on heavy commercial elements, the strong writing and solid screenplay carried it beautifully. Loved it, really a nice padam. pic.twitter.com/r1o4t2dycg

Captain America: Brave New World may have had a divisive release, but Anthony Mackieisn’t out of luck. The star of the Marvel film also had another endeavor released in the past year, which is getting a second life on streaming. The dystopian sci-fi flick, Elevation, was released in 2024, and though it didn’t receive a lot of fanfare when it was first released, it is now getting the attention it deserves. According to FlixPatrol, the film has broken into Amazon Prime Video’s Top 5 on the global chart.
Mackie stars as Will, a single father, in another spin on the increasingly popular dystopian genre. In this scenario, the world has ended because of mysterious monsters that almost eradicated humanity. The remaining humans of the world realized the only way to survive the scourge was to live above 8,000 feet. These monsters cannot live above this level, making the elevated society...

People with an Amazon Prime Video subscription can catch one film that is being "elevated" on the global streaming platform. Vertical's Elevation, the 2024 post-apocalyptic sci-fi film led by Captain America: Brave New World star Anthony Mackie, is currently sitting in the top 10 on Prime Video's streaming charts. While the film itself did not get great reviews, the sci-fi actioner is clearly making waves for people at home.
As of this article's publication, Elevation is currently sitting in the number three spot on Prime Video's Top 10 films chart globally, according to FlixPatrol. It is behind two other action films: Heads of State, starring Idris Elba and John Cena as politicians-turned-action heroes, and The Accountant 2, a thriller starring Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal. The high rankings for Elevation is good news for a film that underperformed at the box office, grossing less than $4 million on a budget of about $18 million.

Anthony Mackie’s 2024 post-apocalyptic thriller has found renewed success as it rises up the Prime Video streaming charts. Known for his iconic role as Sam Wilson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Mackie’s success has only grown in recent years as he’s taken over the mantle of Captain America from Chris Evans in Captain America: Brave New World.
While many will know Mackie for his work in the superhero genre, this is just one of his many talents, as he’s taken on historical roles like Tupac Shakur in Notorious and Martin Luther King Jr. in All the Way. With plenty of underrated, hidden gems, one recent Mackie release is now gaining a second lease of life on streaming.

Christopher Nolan has directed a series of successful projects in different genres, including superhero films, sci-fi, and biographies. The latter turned out to be his most successful release thanks to Oppenheimer.
The biopic was part of a greater cultural phenomenon in 2023, alongside Barbie, and it ended the year as the third highest-grossing title. Oppenheimer was also the highest-grossing biography of all time, and an awards darling, taking home several, including Best Achievement in Directing for Nolan. Per FlixPatrol, Oppenehimer's success continues on streaming as it dominates the charts on Prime Video.

Coming straight off of his fearless, peerlessly playful performance in M. Night Shyamalan’s “Trap,” Josh Hartnett is carrying another wild and playful genre experiment with “Fight or Flight.” Hartnett stars as an exiled American agent, Lucas Reyes, who gets a shot at redemption aboard a flight from Bangkok to San Francisco. All he has to do is track down and identify the “mysterious, international high-value asset known as The Ghost.” Oh, and the plane is full of assassins trying to kill both of them.
The film marks the feature debut of director James Madigan, who has an extensive background in visual effects, from “The Da Vinci Code” to the “Red” films, as well as second unit credits on films including “The Meg” and “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.” It’s also a showcase for Hartnett, who threw himself into doing “100% of his stunts,” as Madigan recently told Jimmy Fallon.

While the world has been fascinated with the mysteries of ancient Egypt since Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon stole all the credit for the glorious reveal of Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922 from the local diggers and historians, the truth of those mysteries rest better in the hands of Egyptians today. And there are still mysteries and wonders aplenty, from the way its colorful mythology slowly blended — syncretized — with the Roman occupiers that gradually wore away the country's golden monarchy, to its early understandings of science and math that remain lost.
It's a tough period of time for amateur historians who love the occasional pop culture dive; unlike other history buffs with their Medieval costume dramas and the upcoming Christopher Nolan-helmed version of "The Odyssey," there's not much that truly digs into the dynastic periods of Egypt. I was seated in the theater for Smile 2 when a trailer for George Nolfi’s Elevation came on. I was intrigued, largely because I hadn’t heard of it and have a profound, insatiable interest in monster movies. And then, I forgot the film existed.
Most of that is Smile 2’s fault. I couldn’t think about anything else for weeks, okay, and if you’ve seen Smile 2, you’ll know exactly what I mean. Months later, I was browsing Max when I saw Elevation was available to stream. My time had come! Better still, I enjoyed the film. I’m not the only one either, since Elevation has recently cracked the Top 10 on Max.
Learn more about the film below:
Per Max: Three years after creatures decimated humanity leaving survivors in the mountains, a father must venture below “The Line” to save his son.

Despite being one of the biggest names in the industry right now, thanks to Marvel Cinematic Universe, Anthony Mackie is setting the record straight when it comes to raising his kids. The actor has four boys with ex-wife Sheletta Chapital, and he is raising them to be humble as they grow into responsible men. As far as he is concerned, his children will not grow up without masculinity. That means that they are going to be respectful, take care of their mother, and be true gentlemen as they navigate through life.

It may be hard for folks who weren't around at the time to understand, but there was a moment when Hugh Grant appeared poised to become one of the biggest movie stars on the planet.
Flashback to the spring of 1994. Bill Clinton was a popular U.S. President, everyone was drinking Zima, and moviegoers were flocking to cineplexes to see the British rom-com "Four Weddings and a Funeral." It was a surprise hit that picked up word-of-mouth steam via a slow roll-out from its distributor Gramercy Pictures, which was fortunate to have a great, immensely appealing film at a time when theaters were being inundated with dreck like "Major League II," "Cops and Robbersons" and "D2: The Mighty Ducks."
While "Four Weddings and a Funeral" is at heart an ensemble comedy, Grant's endearingly flappable demeanor and effortless delivery of the film's hilariously quippy dialogue had some critics comparing him to Hollywood's greatest Grant.

What happens when we die? This age-old question has confounded philosophers and religious experts alike while occupying our thoughts to an unhealthy degree. The irony is that each of us will one day have the answer, but will not be able to pass on what we find. As an author of horror fiction, Stephen King has been exploring this concept for the past 50 years with novels that run the gamut from thrilling and tense to downright nihilistic and cruel. For example, this month’s The Monkey is a blood-soaked romp through the reality of death brought to life with the icy humor of director Oz Perkins. On the opposite end of the spectrum is King’s 2018 novel Elevation. At just shy of 150 pages, this slim story explores the beautiful possibilities of leaving this world and what we can accomplish before saying goodbye.

While Netflix remains the undisputed king of streaming as far as subscriber numbers go, there's a heck of a lot of stuff happening elsewhere, and a lot of it is actually quite good. Apple TV+ sticks out as the most salient example, with the platform churning out a string of top-quality series from "Slow Horses" to TV's trippiest mind-bender "Severance," the second season of which is even better than the first.

Elevation’s prologue initially revealed that the Reapers came from the sinkholes that appeared across the globe, suggesting that these monsters could be inhabitants of the Hollow Earth, like Godzilla and Kong, and have finally emerged to the surface to become the apex predator. [Spoiler Alert] However, Elevation’s end credits scene clears the mystery centering around these creatures’ origins and points out that these monsters are likely extraterrestrial beings that arrived on Earth inside meteorites. In the film’s ending, the lead protagonists, Will and Nina, saw three meteorites in the air about to hit the earth, which was most likely a new bunch of Reapers coming in to replace the ones that the humans had already destroyed. These three meteorites could also be hi-tech alien ships just like the Reapers themselves, which are nothing but killing bots with impenetrable armored skin. Before Captain America: Brave New World, Anthony Mackie battled monsters in the post-apocalyptic film Elevation, which was released in select theaters in 2024. Although critics dismissed the film as another War of the Words knockoff, audiences have grown fond of it, as evidenced by its fresh audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. But now more people can discover the underrated sci-fi flick as it arrives on a new streaming home this month.
Starting Feb. 21, Elevation is now available to stream on Max. The film follows Mackie as a single father in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by massive, alien-like creatures. Alongside fellow MCU star Morena Baccarin, and Maddie Hasson, the trio venture beyond "The Line," where monsters live on Earth below 8,000 feet. It's part A Quiet Place and War of the Worlds, while finds Elevation finds its own formula that genuinely feels like a fresh addition to the sci-fi action subgenre. As of Feb.

In 1961, Richard Matheson published a short story called "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" that became a cornerstone of TheTwilight Zone franchise. Rod Serling's original series included an instant-classic adaptation that has been endlessly referenced, and remade twice. 1983's Twilight Zone: The Movie, and Jordan Peele's 2019 reboot series both tackled the tale in contrasting ways, and watching the three versions together reveals much about why the Matheson story is so special.
The 1963 Twilight Zone episode "Nightmare at 20,000 Feet" featured a performance from William Shatner that makes up for the low-budget creature he sees on the wing of his plane. 20 years later, George "Mad Max" Miller remade the story with advanced FX for Twilight Zone: The Movie, and in 2019 the reboot series included "Nightmare at 30,000 Feet," a modern take that may be the most paranoid of them all.

Elevation is a sci-fi thriller set in a world overrun by deadly, insect-like creatures known as Reapers. Emerging from beneath the earth, these relentless predators wiped out 95% of humanity in just a month. However, there’s one crucial weakness—Reapers cannot survive above 8,000 feet. Clinging to survival, the last remnants of humanity have taken refuge in isolated mountain communities.
In one such settlement, Will faces an impossible choice. His son, Hunter, suffers from a lung condition, and without fresh oxygen filters, his survival is at risk. The problem? The supplies he needs lie far below the 8,000-foot safety line. Meanwhile, Nina, a determined scientist, has her own reasons for descending—her research lab, which may hold vital information about the Reapers, is also below the line. Producer Brad Fuller talks to us about A Quiet Place, making genre films on a budget, and his latest sci-fi thriller, Elevation.
“I’m speaking to you from jail,” producer Brad Fuller says as he appears on a video call from Brisbane, Australia. And, sure enough, he’s sitting directly in front of a large window with horizontal white bars running across it. This is, he tells us, the set of Anaconda – presumably some back office somewhere – his latest project, and one of a string of genre movies he’s steered over the past quarter of a century.
Fuller is a genuine fan of horror, action and creature features. Aside from the aforementioned snake movie – a meta reworking of the 1997 B-movie of the same name – he’s also produced A Quiet Place and its numerous sequels and prequels. Producer Brad Fuller explains why Anaconda is a meta horror comedy rather than a straight remake of the 1997 creature feature.
Remakes – particularly of genre films – are hardly a new phenomenon, but the upcoming Anaconda promises to be rather different. It stars Jack Black and Paul Rudd as two filmmakers (a director and actor respectively) whose careers have hit the skids.
In a final attempt to make something of themselves, the pair head to the Amazon and attempt to shoot their own low-budget remake of a 1997 creature feature called – you guessed it – Anaconda. In other words, it’s a meta comedy take on a familiar name, brought to the screen by director Tom Gormican, whose The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent – a likeably daft dissection of Nicolas Cage’s career – was similarly post-modern.

The long-gestating Star Wars movie that's set to bring back Daisy Ridley and focus on Rey rebuilding the Jedi Order has had more than a few snags in the past couple of years. First announced in 2023, the project initially had Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson attached to write it before they were replaced by Steven Knight. However, Knight dropped out in Oct. 2024, and now writer/director George Nolfi has been brought in to pen the screenplay, which could spell good news for Star Wars fans, as he seems to have a firm grasp on the mythology first created by George Lucas.
Speaking with Film Stories about his latest horror flick, Elevation, the subject of Star Wars was just too tempting to avoid, and as such, Nolfi was asked what he could share about the project. Set to be directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Nolfi says that for his version of a...

After the news that George Nolfi would be the new writer on Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy's New Jedi Order film, it's only fitting that outlets want to get whatever details they can about the upcoming film starring Daisy Ridley as Rey Skywalker. Film Stories did just that, asking the writer about how he approached the new position while speaking to him about his new movie Elevation.
Nolfi, who has written for the Jason Bourne films as well as the heist movie Ocean's 12, has a love for politics and studied that and philosophy in the past. It's part of what pulled him towards George Lucas' work, which, remember folks, is well documented to always be political. George Lucas has stated that these are "themes that run all the way through Star Wars," with America being the Empire for the original trilogy and him being against George Bush-era policies during the prequel trilogies.

Ahead of Elevation’s UK release, we talk to George Nolfi about monsters, the state of original screenwriting, and his plans for Star Wars.
Since his career began over two decades ago, writer-director George Nolfi has brought a level of thoughtfulness to his genre movies. In The Adjustment Bureau, his 2011 directorial debut, he adapted a Philip K Dick short story as a philosophical sci-fi romance starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt – something that might have wrong-footed audiences expecting an action thriller in the vein of earlier adaptations of Dick’s other work, most obviously the ultra-violent blockbuster, Total Recall.
Prior to that, Nolfi’s spec script, Honor Among Thieves, was bought up and re-christened as Ocean’s Twelve (2004) – director Steven Soderbergh’s smart, sparky all-star heist comedy. Nolfi also lent his writing talent to The Bourne Supremacy (albeit uncredited) and The Bourne Ultimatum (credited).

Writer-director George Nolfi talks exclusively to us about his screenwriting work on Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s upcoming Star Wars movie.
Asking a filmmaker about their forthcoming Marvel or Star Wars project is generally a fool’s errand. Not least because they’ve signed so many non-disclosure agreements that they essentially can’t say anything.
All the same, when we spoke to director George Nolfi last week about his latest film Elevation – due for release on Prime Video UK on the 8th February – we could hardly avoid the (metaphorical) elephant in the room. Only a couple of days earlier, Hollywood trade outlets had reported that Nolfi had been hired as the screenwriter on one of Lucasfilm’s Star Wars projects.
If you’re unfamiliar, this is the sequel announced about two years ago, designed to bring back Daisy Ridley as Rey, and with documentary filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy making her narrative feature debut.

George Nolfi’s Elevation is the latest in a long line of post-apocalyptic survival thrillers, following in the well-worn footsteps of A Quiet Place and Bird Box, where humanity has been pushed to the brink by an unstoppable force. This time, it’s not sound-sensitive extraterrestrials or unseen psychological horrors, but towering, insectoid creatures known as Reapers that have driven humans to extinction-level crisis. Their one weakness is that they inexplicably don’t, or won’t, venture above 8,000 feet.
It’s an interesting idea, and one that offers a fresh variation on the genre’s usual rules of survival. Instead of keeping quiet or avoiding eye contact, the last remnants of humankind have taken refuge in the mountains, forming isolated pockets of society in places like Lost Gulch Refuge, a Colorado settlement perched high above the danger zone. It’s here we meet Will (Anthony Mackie), a father trying to provide for his young son,...

Mackie spoke on the matter in an interview a couple of years ago. According to him, while he had tremendous fun shooting for the upcoming release, he would also appreciate collaborating with other Marvel veterans for a project.
Namely, the former Captain America star Chris Evans, Thor star Chris Hemsworth, and his The Falcon and the Winter Soldier co-star Sebastian Stan. The main reason behind that is he believes they would cause unprecedented chaos in the movie, which not just them but also the audience would enjoy.

Despite what you might have heard on the internet, the Rey Skywalker movie is not dead. In fact, it just tapped George Nolfi to be its screenwriter.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the writer and director has been brought on to write the film, which will see the return of Daisy Ridley in the role of Rey Skywalker. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is still on as the director, making her jump from documentaries to narrative features.
I'm going to say this again for the people in the back: It's perfectly normal for movies in pre-production to sometimes go through different writers. At one point or another, Damon Lindelof, Justin Britt-Gibson, and Steven Knight were writers on the New Jedi Order. There could be a number of reasons for pre-production teams to move on from a project. The reason why these make headlines is because Star Wars is such a massive thing.

The Star Wars movie centered on Daisy Ridley’s Rey has found another new writer. THR reports that George Nolfi, best known for The Bourne Ultimatum and Ocean’s Twelve, will take over the script for the new Star Wars movie.
The project, which is set to be helmed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel), was originally thought to be one of the first new Star Wars films to be released, but it’s been plagued with setbacks. It was first announced at Star Wars Celebration close to two years ago, with Damon Lindelof (Lost) and Justin Britt-Gibson (The Strain) writing the script. The pair left or were “asked to leave,” as Lindelof put it, and Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) stepped in to take over. However, Knight dropped out last October. Here’s hoping Nolfi has better luck.

Daisy Ridley’s “Star Wars” movie is still alive. Lucasfilm has hired George Nolfi (“The Borne Ultimatum”) to write the script for the long-gestating follow-up to 2019’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” which is still set to be the feature directorial debut for Oscar-winning documentarian Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.

Despite the fast-tracking of Shawn Levy’s standalone Star Wars movie with Ryan Gosling in talks, Daisy Ridley's Rise of Skywalker sequel is getting another pass, this time by writer George Nolfi.
Filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is still attached to direct the story about Rey Skywalker, 15 years after the events of 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. The plot is rumored that Rey, the granddaughter of Emperor Palpatine, will oversee a school of Jedis.
Previous scribes on the Rey story included Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. In April 2023 Peaky Blinder creator Steven Knight was also making a go at it, but stepped away last October.

Lyrical Media chief Alex Black got swarmed with “a million emails and messages” on the day it was announced his young production company was teaming with Ryder Picture Company on a film adaptation of Emily Henry’s best-selling 2024 rom-com “Funny Story,” screen-written by the author herself.
A big get for any studio, the deal was particularly noteworthy for a three-year-old company still establishing itself in Hollywood and going up against the old guard for top titles and talent.
“In the meeting, I think we were able to really pitch to Emily that we would be great partners on this project because of our understanding of the material and our ability to make independent movies — not necessarily indie movies — that allows us to just work more nimbly and do what’s best for the project,” Lyrical Media’s vice president of film and TV Natalie Sellers said. “Emily got really excited...

The pulse-pounding sci-fi thriller Elevation is set to stream exclusively on Prime Video from 8 February, bringing audiences a high-stakes story of survival, loss, and courage. From the creative forces behind A Quiet Place and The Purge, the film stars Anthony Mackie (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), Morena Baccarin (Deadpool), Maddie Hasson (Malignant), and Danny Boyd Jr. (Watchmen). Directed by George Nolfi (The Adjustment Bureau), Elevation promises a gripping exploration of a world irrevocably changed by disaster.
Set against the stark beauty of the Rocky Mountains, Elevation imagines a future where the last remnants of humanity survive above 8,000 feet, the only zone safe from the monstrous creatures that decimated the population three years prior. Below this threshold—ominously known as “The Line”—lurks certain death. For Anthony Mackie’s character, a devoted father, descending into this perilous terrain is not a choice but a desperate necessity.

“Kraven the Hunter” (Sony) flopped in theaters when it opened five weeks ago (not even $25 million grossed in the U.S./Canada), but the Marvel world-adjacent action film had enough interest to vie for top home VOD title last week. It placed first at Fandango (which calculates by revenue) and second currently at iTunes (ranking by transactions), although it was #1 at the latter its first three days in release.
“Wicked” (Universal) in its third week of home release remained #1 at iTunes, but dropped to second at Fandango. Both rent for 48 hours for $19.99.
At Netflix, “Back in Action” is the latest original movie to lead their top 10. The spy comedy, Jamie Foxx’s first TV movie since 2004, and Cameron Diaz’s first film of any kind in over a decade, is the kind of star-driven lightweight effort that used to populate theaters on a regular basis.
